It's not that romantic love should be above everything, but here I have the feeling that the author (of the novel and the script) tortures these two men (XL and CX) because she is resentful of men... I think that making suffer these characters doesn't have any other reason, just her personal grudge, and that's why the whole story doesn't feel right and healthy.
Interesting take, but I'd disagree given most of season 2 was about CX trying to get with XY. Plus I think it…
Thanks for the information, it's interesting to read. It's a pity that these "lonely wolves" fighting for their cause are always killed in every Chinese film (that I saw until now), because the authors consider the unity of the empire as the ultimate "Great Cause", for which every war and causalities in lives are acceptable and justified.

"I'm not sure what you mean by XY wasn't affected for life. We don't see XY's entire life."
When TSJ was 'dead', she was very upset, and she even "married' him while he was supposed to be dead. When XL died, she cried a bit, but she wasn't devastated, and she married TSJ.

"most of that dialog was delivered to XY in the book"
I am referring only to the series, and I consider it as a different story from the book. I know that the author and the scriptwriter is the same person, and the story is mostly the same, but concerning the approach of the 4 characters and the relationships of the FL with the 3 men, she made changes, so it's not the same story at the end.
But I understand perfectly that in the book XL and XY had a mutual love - in the series however, I think it was not shown like that (after he died, she cried, but wasn't affected for a life).
As for the characters' morality, in the series XL says he works as an assassin from time to time, and he kills people for money, or in exchange of a reward. CX has never done that.

That's why he can play such good ML characters. :))
This story was "The Rise of Shen Yuan", and that's why I watched it :)
