Haha, same here! This is my first Neo Hou drama, too. I saw the trailer as soon as it aired and was so excited about it. Tbh, I expected it to be a bit different, but I wasn't disappointed at all. I ended up loving this production - especially Zhao Yuanzhou's character. It was perfect for me to wind down after a long day of studying.
I also try not to be biased, even if I really like the actors. FoF is not perfect by any means, but I love it so much. The characters, the cinematography, the plot, the hidden meanings, the subtle romance... AAA-, I could go on for days!

It doesn't necessarily mean that the actors and actresses are actual idols. Instead, the cast typically consists of very attractive actors, with a strong focus on their appearance, colourful rich in patterns clothes, vivid backgrounds, and a storyline that usually revolves around romance, but it can also be xianxia or wuxia. Early on, many people tune in not because they're interested in the plot, but because they are huge fans of the ml or fml. It's mainly made for young adults or teenagers.
Non-idol dramas are a bit different though. The main leads are not incredibly handsome or beautiful, and most of the cast is made up of "average looking" people. It's usually not heavy on romance, quite realistic and more historically accurate The emphasis is more on the storyline than the appearance of the characters. They wear less make-up and use little to no filters. It's made for adults or the elderly.
Some don't like idol dramas because they believe that the focus on appearance and handsomeness takes away from the plot, makes the characters weaker in terms of personality, etc. That's why idol dramas tend to have a big fanbase but rank low. There are a few exceptions though, which have a good ranking on douban.
The rating of FoF is extremely low because it's an idol drama, has a unique style that's not for everyone, and because of the director who's a controversial one for sure 🙃
I personally prefer idol dramas because I like to look at beautiful people, find the topics more interesting, and there are many that deliver both in terms of cinematography and plot, like Fangs of Fortune or Love Between Fairy and Devil 😊

My favourite scene is when Zhuo Yichen's brother is practicing sword techniques in the garden, meanwhile Zhuo Yichen being as cute as he is tries to jump up and get the fruit on the tree That's just so adorable and heartwarming 🥰
I also love that scene when ZYZ gives flowers to the XW and we get to see some flashbacks from their past!
Oh, and the scene where the three of them were arguing about swings and ZYC was being all jealous because ZYZ was pushing the swing XW was on.
God, there are so many amazing scenes. I could spend a whole day listing them... 🤭

Although I'm a die-hard bl fan, I can't wrap my head around something - Just because two people have amazing chemistry and lots of screentime together, it doesn't mean that they were meant to be lovers 😭 Like pls. I personally see nothing more between Zhuo Yichen and Zhao Yuanzhou besides friendship and an unbreakable, extremely strong bond! After all, they've been through so much...
From the first moment they met, it has been so obvious that Zhu Yan and Wen Xiao felt something towards each other. I find it so beautiful that we've got quite a few scenes with only the two of them, talking about their inner feelings. It shows how comfortable they feel in each other's presence. Also, it's so adorable that Zhu Yan protects WX so much 🥺 Maybe I'm a bit biased here as I like physically weak female leads, but I think Wen Xiao is such a refreshing character: She's calm, wise, and has a heart of gold. Whenever she's on screen, I feel calm like everything's gonna be alright. What many people don't notice is that she's the glue that holds the group together.
Oh, and let's not forget about such moments like when ZYZ and XW were exploring the pavillon together, holding hands, and almost kissing~ Can't wait to see more of them! Although their romance is subtle, it's definitely there if one cares to look at the details 😊

Zhuo Yichen's been a demon for only a few hours, yet he experienced such humiliation and groundless accusation. Imagine what Zhu Yan must have gone through all those years ALONE... Yet he chose and always chooses to protect the people, care for them, and appreciate the average life they live.
I really really love this show. I don't know who the screenwriter was, but congrats to him. He surely did great at writing complex characters! 🥺

I personally think it's a very hard choice, but I'd either choose Zhao Yuanzhou's or Zhuo Yichen's. Both are so heartbreaking 😭
