I haven’t read the novel, but I still managed to figure everything out… It’s pretty obvious from the way her master carries himself that he’s a powerful, well-educated gentleman. Since he’s her master, it’s likely he knows martial arts — and in ancient China, martial arts knowledge often went hand in hand with some knowledge of medicine. Especially if he had a proper education (which, judging by how refined he is and how luxurious that room looks, he definitely did — probably coming from a family with at least a comfortable income).
Ahh. Here we go again. Comparing novel and adaptation. Not upto the mark they say. As a drama only watcher, I'm…
I love your way of thinking! It’s totally understandable that people compare it to the novel since it’s the original source, but I feel like it’s starting to get a bit too much now. It’s a TV show — of course it’s not going to be exactly like the book 😔 Plus, considering how many things they probably had to change just to pass censorship… the screenwriters must have been sweating buckets to make this work! 😆
I just finished watching the first 5 episodes, and let’s just say this: if you’re a novel reader, you’re…
I haven’t read the novel yet (though I definitely plan to 🤭), so I’m genuinely curious — why do people say this drama looks cheap? To me, it doesn’t at all, but I keep seeing that comment pop up. Were the surroundings described differently in the novel? Or is it because there’s no heavy filter, so the more earthy tones (lots of browns, for example) make it look “dirty”? 🤔 I’m honestly just confused, so thank you in advance if you decide to help this poor soul out.
From what I’ve seen on X, this drama wasn’t an S+ project, but “only” an S.

I believe this is why he drew sword and cut the mask in half! Just because it isn't said right in the beginning, it doesn't mean he is not suspecting something
Personally, I’m really enjoying this drama! It feels like I’m the only one, but to me it doesn’t look cheap at all. There’s no heavy filter or extreme color grading — and since the story focuses on war and the military, the more grounded visuals actually fit perfectly.
Of course there are going to be plot holes — it’s a drama! I like how mysterious it is so far, and how not everything is spoon-fed to us like it would be in a novel. This is a TV show, not a book!
Zhou Ye is absolutely nailing the role of He Yan. Sure, she’s not portrayed as overly masculine, but I find it hilarious how people panic over the idea that anyone could believe she’s a man 😂 We’re talking about ancient China here — no one would expect a woman to willingly disguise herself as a man and go to war. And honestly… have you never seen men who look feminine? Because I definitely have 🤦🏼♀️

Here's a clip of Li Qing, who replaced Li Mingde. What do you think of the AI face-swapping? Is it impressive…
I can tell that something is kinda off but tbh it's a lot better than I expected. When I first heard they are gonna use the AI face-swapping technique, I got quite scared. Curious, how believable it's gonna look like in longer scenes where the character is talking or fights. Thanks for sharing! 😊
according to previous comments of those who read the novel, her physique is supposed to be dainty, that's why…
that is what i have been saying. i think zhou ye fits the character well. it might not be historically accurate, but tbh I don't care as long as we get a great drama! and let's be honest, she looks so good in that armour, at least convincing enough for me

i feel like this conversation is starting to get out of hand. i don't wanna fight, especially over such an insignificant thing. let's accept that we have different opinions. i respect yours

nothing serious, don't worry 😊❤️ her fans started critising the choices of her stylists and makeup artists and depanded the company replace the staff. Bai Lu then decided to speak up and said that everyone will work hard to make the best out of this drama and that it is the most complex role she has ever done, therefore indirectly silencing the complaints.
tbh, i don't understand what was the problem with her appearance. she looks as beautiful and graceful as always 🥰

yeah, there are many men like that, especially in southeast asian countries, including south China.
plus let's not forget that back then men were generally on the shorter side, too, rarely being above the height of 170 cm, so a general being her height is more realistic in this drama than Ryan Cheng's height. plus one can be skinny AND muscular.
why can't a short and skinny general exist, especially in a drama? exceptions always exist :)
finding a female actress who is tall enough to fit the height of a born male actor would be pretty painful as most Chinese women are under the height of 170 cm.

I know, but that's how the author described her! I can't change that.
If the production company chose to cast an actress who looks more traditionally masculine, fans of the novel would probably get upset (and East Asian fanbases can be pretty wild—just look at the recent Mo Li controversy). Plus, the drama might not attract as many views or investments.
To be historically accurate, the actress would need to be somewhat muscular, with rougher skin—since there was no skincare back then. Basically, the opposite of current Chinese beauty standards. 🤷🏼♀️
all the bts and the teasers look so good!! i already love the dynamics between He Yan and Xiao Jue. what's better than a strong character? TWO, who complete each other and are the IT couple 🙇🏼♀️
Hope this helps understand 😅

it is worth following the fan accounts of the main leads on x. they post many bts and teasers day by day~
