An hour of the movie feels like an indie movie about a small town then the sudden switch to a disaster movie feels…
This is exactly my thoughts about the movie! In reading reviews here it sounds like the actual title is the town’s name…Which then makes more sense that the focus was on the characters and not the disaster. Think it also explains who survived and who didn’t (like Lee Min Ki’s character who was portrayed as an outsider/fish out of water)
Some monsters were very cute but one was a giant chicken which was ridiculous. I didn’t understand why FL had a huge mole on her face for the first third of the movie, it disappeared and then a very minor female character came onto the scene and had the same huge mole on her face in the same spot FL had hers. Did that mean anything?
I liked this because I love the leads who gave their all but the cult twist came out of nowhere and seemed so tacked on. Plus why did FL have to sport plum lipstick and weird silken garments to illustrate her culty ways? This also features the worst child actor I have seen so far in Korean cinema
This is now on Amazon Prime. It seemed like it was trying to give the traditional folk song/dance/storytelling experience, interesting and not just a dumb sex comedy (though there were tons of silly moments like the powerful jets of urine set off to classical music and the synchronized swimming scene, which I think was a metaphor for how becoming the swimming girl was)
I just finished reading about the admiral and his battles and it is so amazing how this film brought the brilliance of his large and small tactics to life. Felt like jumping up and down when the (literal and figurative) turnaround of the final battle happened. Applause worthy!
Listed as “Red Scandal” in Amazon Prime. Very convoluted, unsuspenseful way of telling a murder mystery. It isn’t even a mystery, the reason is revealed pretty early and the rest of the movie is just showing the plot get carried out. With unnecessary almost-sex scenes in between
There were some funny moments but I wouldn’t call it a comedy…More an exploration of how we can ruin our lives by losing hope and not following our dreams. We see two sorely disappointed/betrayed people act out when there’s no way to salvage their past for the entire movie and decide to die. I found it hard to believe a parent would choose such an ending but I guess it shows the level of desperation
Not as satisfying as the “Another Record” with Lee Je Hoon (both are now on Amazon Prime). His was all about him with lots about how he got started and his thoughts/dreams. This was mainly Shin Se Kyung visiting various small businesses/cafes and listening to the owners’ stories, interpersed with brief interviews with her, about her desire to take a break. The tarot card reading near the start was my favorite part; but every segment linked back to her desire for a break. It made the focus very narrow and we learned more about the people she talked to than about her. Still a pleasant watch!
If all the crude sex scenes were removed it would be a sad meditation on a happy marriage cut short by husband falling into a coma and how hard it is for them to let each other go. But also the premise just didn’t make sense. How is he aware of these people having sex around him (or even picturing them as doctors, nurses and hospital visitors when he can’t possibly have any idea he is in a hospital?).
The focus was on “Does my wife still love me” and “Is she sleeping around.” She is there every day for three years so seems obvious he has nothing to worry about. A weird mess of a movie but seems well intentioned and the flashbacks of their relationship really were joyful
This is one of the worst films I’ve ever seen. Shallow characterization, unlikeable characters, withholding info/motivations and jumping back and forth in time just for labored “surprises” at the end. Everything seemed to happen in a one-block radius (except for the tacked on ending). Watched it for the lead actors, but felt bad they were in this!
Edited to add: This was apparently based on a 2010 webtoon and sounds like it just followed the webtoon. Maybe this just works better as a series than a relatively short movie. I also updated my past ratings to better reflect how bad this is compared to my lowest-rated films and dramas
Loved this, the ML and FL were obviously meant for each other; scenes, costumes were beautiful, and the focus on Korean art was appreciated. While I understand papermaking is also an art...I think it's the main reason this seemed to drag on for so long. It felt like most of the episodes were about the papermaking when they could have been about other things (like the modern-day storyline, the romance or actually making art).
Dark yet funny, really played with the danger of lies, tall tales and not knowing whom to trust. Jung Jin Young was a nice surprise, he really elevated the movie for me. But that ending! 😅
This is on Amazon Prime with almost no subs (only subs background noise and English, and sometimes subs the dialogue as “[Speaking Korean]”). But pretty easy to follow due to the nature of the story
