xie queshan's actions at the start of the novel are a bit questionable but it starts to make sense as you further read the novel! (i'm trying not to spoil over here lol) at the beginning of the story, nan yi steals his pouch hoping to find some money but ends up stealing some crucial military information which is why he gets really mad.
some pages have translations which says "she ends up becoming his slave" but that's not really the case. he just makes her work under him a bit, making her spy around the xie family house and getting information from here and there because he's the general who rebelled and is supposedly working for the qi dynasty. he also threatens her by saying that he's going to kill her but never does anything severe. he only does that to scare her, if that makes sense.
