I have personally met Japanese men living abroad ( my colleagues) so i don't really know much about Japan itself but the very few ones i have met and befriended with say they are indeed a bit distant due to their culture. but this is just my observation. it can differ anyways :)

I think it depends on the audience's perception on this matter but the main issue was the communication barrier( which kinda related to the cultural differences right?) like them not talking, not showing each other affection etc but then again, it just depends on how one perceives this.
