In the novel, apparently, part of her dowry are her maids that would concubines to her future husband. Her maid didnt die in the novel, and they found each other again. She explained to her maid that it's not that she doesnt want her to marry, but it's because it's ZL and that she doesnt want to share him.

The thing is being a concubine is perfectly acceptable in their society and even expected for high ranking men. She doesnt think she's doing something entirely wrong. Her saying to FTY that she would defer to FTY was a way to assure her that she doesnt mean to take her place as the main wife. She hasn't done anything entirely malicious on her own, she's mostly being used.
