I took it as he had some feelings towards her but she didn’t return them because she didn’t like where they both were in life money/class wise. So they were in an ambiguous state for a long time till xiguang came and sped things up. This made them react differently, Ye Rong not wanting to let go of her safe choice and ZX still affected by the ambiguity he received from YR and carrying the resentment over to xiguang (fueled by YR)
