This is typical and has been extremely mild here for this drama. I’ve seen way worse. With this kind of mega success a few negative comments will get drown out. Negative comments usually come when comments section slows down otherwise gets buried

Actually that big age gap makes more sense the way the leads portrayed their characters. The younger you are the less fear you have the more invincible you feel.

That currently watching has to match completed or below it to make sense to me when the rating is over 9. It’s slowly getting there. MDL will make sure it does.

I don’t trust Douban either. Both this drama and Feud had pages of perfect 5 stars on Douban everyday during its airing and even afterwards for at least a week or more. After that I don’t look. I think this drama would still have gotten a decent Douban like 6.5 but I feel 6.9 was a bit inflated. I think in general a 7.9 on MDL is actually a good score because many very good dramas are 7.8 to 8.1. That’s why I take all ratings with a grain of salt. For producers and brands It’s the popularity that matters for commercial value. I would think that they have than way of knowing what is real.

The second couple went beyond just sex. It’s more the stuff of human psyche while the main couple is more fairytale. The relationships that deal more with humanity tend to be more polarizing and on its own probably won’t get high rating but it works here it’s not the main relationship and gave the drama tension especially well executed. The fairy tale relationship is the reason for high rating but I think the villains elevated the show. The producers and directors and writers know what audience wants. They packed it all in and executed well as far as keeping viewers entertained. Without the kinds of villains the show would be very different with bigger conflict with the leads and not soften up ML but then with a stronger ML means will be less contrast of how strong FL and different village atmosphere at the beginning. They did the same thing in another drama FL does all the fight
scenes and ML cannot fight, also soft, to make FL feel the most powerful. . have to go with the flow and enjoy it otherwise look for a different story.

Second couple had more depth and complexity due to extremes instead of just warm fuzzies. The main couple conflicts were predictable not that deep and resolved easily. Can’t really compare them either. They are different kinds of relationships and dynamics evoke different emotions

Villains are a big part of why the drama is so popular. Imagine if those villains were as chilled as the main couple. Then they would need to create big conflicts with the main leads instead of quick reconciliation.

Most historical dramas are not the more serious traditional you should question but historical fiction but this one is more historical fantasy no need to question it when it’s pure entertainment only. It won’t be this popular if it’s a serious drama.

Yep. They soften his appearance especially in the village scenes for those intended emotional effects between them. It’s what created the allure between the characters. It worked for most viewers.

Not on the “same level” as the great ones. I read that its rating 9.2 was the greatest of all time on MDL.
