I really think it depends which school you go to. Some schools don´t take bullying into account, others do. SK is changing like any other country. While there are many horrifying serious cases of bullying (physical, violent), there are also a lot of cases of typical school bullying that happens everywhere in the world (ostracization, belittling, cyberbullying) and while it is, again, a horrible things it happens in most countries.
As it comes to studying 18 hours a day, I don´t think that is the case for everyone. From what I have read, there are average or below average non-academic students in Korea too and they just clock off at 3pm and don´t attend any private classes. What you see in this drama and many others is the case for the bests of the bests. These people just want to get into top 3 universities and they work HARD for it, but there are 202 universities in Korea (google says so), so I am sure if you are chill (and your parents are sane) you don´t necessarily have to live such a hellish overstressed life.
Another problem is that culturally, education is VERY IMPORTANT for Koreans so parents do tend to push their kids into studying wayyy more than parents in other countries. A big factor is the education itself - long hours, memorisation-based, frontal-teaching, overpraising the top students, not minding each student´s individuality etc. I always wonder how hard it must be to be an average student and God forbid having ADHD or dyslexia.
Koreans are one of the most educated nations with high achievements and they definitely work VERY HARD to deserve that, but I do think you have to take in account not everyone is the top 1% student.
Is anyone who has read the novel watching this? How would you compare the two? Is it a good adaptation? I´m personally enjoying the drama, though I still haven´t seen the new bunch of episodes (saving them for the weekend hurray!) but I have just wondered.
Yes I don’t understand why they feel so privileged to have the special treatment
because their children´s education is all that matters to them. their world is built around them and now that world is slightly shaking due to their favourite (and amazing) teacher giving the privileges that should have been theirs (in THEIR eyes) is someone else´s. everyone would like to have him as their child´s tutor and they just can´t bear it seeing that he is devoting his time to a girl from not-so-wealthy background.
he made it a fact that he doesn´t tutor privately but broke those rules for one girl and that girl is not their daughter.
they are also paying a lot of money for that academy and I bet it is A LOT of money. they feel like they are owning those teachers because they all technically work for them, not for a state school but for them. after all, in their heads they think they can buy anything and everything because everyone has a price. that is what SOME rich people are raised with.
they are just wrong and shameless, but I do understand the aspect that they are angry about him tutoring her because it is kind of like him breaking the contract. but the measures they go into, to be nosy about his private life and them being so vile is just too much (and I do think wayyy exaggerated for the purpose of the drama, of course)
FL sister, had all right to pursue her career, life and find happiness. But what she don't have right to, is to…
to be fair, I don´t think leaving your own child is an easy decision to make and no one should judge a woman for doing so. I am sure that back then she thought it was the best decision for her daughter and who knows, maybe it was. it is better to give your child something of a stable home rather than making her move from one house to an other, one city to another while pursuing your own happiness. she was probably young, mentally unstable and didn´t know what she wanted. also, the fact that her mother chased her and died doing so was NOT her fault. it is unfair to judge a person for their decisions. I don´t think it is ever easy to give up your child for adoption, at least she let her daughter grow up in a healthy environment of her own family since she couldn´t give her the love she deserved. asking for forgiveness is not the same as asking to throw away all those years Haee had with her aunt.
Why does Jang Young Nam always play mentally unstable mothers? she seems so nice, I wish someone gave her a more pleasant role. still, I do think she loves her sons in her own obsessive way. I actually felt for her when she talked to her older son. I think she is genuinely torn in her emotions, knowing how much education means and how much pressure she is putting on them.
JEALOUSY IS A DISEASE. I f*cking hate Soo-A and her mom they are so insufferable and selfish. So what if Hae-E…
basing your own self-worth only on your academic accomplishments make you feel so. her mother always clears her path and she is used to getting her way. despite that I still think she is a hardworking and intelligent girl, but her circumstances and immaturity turned her into who she is.
but I must admit despite knowing all that, I find her storyline quite stereotypically boring. she is that annoying element that makes me roll my eyes. I wish they gave her more redeeming qualities. I hate unnecessary complications and while I understand every plot needs a climax, she is just annoying. I hope her character gets some development or something.
Jung Kyung Ho and Shin Jae Ha were together in Prison Playbook. say no more!!! well, the story also looks amazing. I hope there is no necessary drama though
