In the novel it was the emperor who set up the Di Family with the secret letter. The Queen Dowager knows everything took the fall to hide the secret by commiting suicide. Anle still discovered the emperor being behind the secret letter which led the the downfall of the Di Family.
They are dragging this out for no reason; I am sure the ending will be rushed, and incomplete.
The current eps is around chapter 40+ out of 112 of vol 1 . There is still 104 +2 chapters for vol 2. There's gonna be many deleted plots to fit the storyline within 39 eps. This drama needs 2 seasons for proper storytelling.

Last year 40 eps was allowed but season 2 can be shown immediately after season 1 unlike this year there is a 3 month gap before another season. For example a drama has 45 eps, it would be waste to air the last 5 eps after 3 months. Best case would be split the drama evenly but production team decided somehow to just proceed to 1 season only since there might be 2 or 3 episodes at most which have been cut/deleted.
This happen to TTEOM which was heavily edited/deleted in the final arc.
I think this issue will still occur for dramas whose production finished last year.

The production was probably forced to cut some scenes due to the 40 limit restriction. Maybe they had more than 40 eps in mind when they finished the drama last year. At least the happy ending is not less than few minutes which happens to all costume drama these days or open endings which is the usual trope for xianxia.
The show has excellent run from start to end even if there are a some plot holes along the way. Each important character especially the main couple and their friends had a satisfying/ well deserved ending.
