It ain't that deep honestly, they included smoking cause its mentioned in the book alot. By aesthetic i meant, when they share the cigarette, it creates a really intimate atmosphere + in china, EVERYONE smokes so shouldn't be surprising to see so much smoking in chinese bls.

One more thing that i haven't seen anyone mention is how their dialogues never come across as cringe and their conversations actually feel real and natural & flow smoothly. For example; the convo after they visited shulangs moms grave, the convo while fan xiao is painting shulang. #ilovethem🤍
