I am up to episode 15... having trouble going on... Simayi is not selling his brilliance to me. People, in the drama, keep talking about how he's brilliant but I have not been wowed yet... is this going to be a case of people saying he is brilliant and us just having to agree with it? I am honestly waiting for the pin to drop and it hasn't done it yet.

This was the best show I've ever watched. So no, it is not highly rated for no reason. You can look at the breakdown in ratings... look at how many 10's were rewarded. It is that good. Maybe it was just not your type of drama but to be skeptical that it is rated high because you didn't like it feels a bit insulting to all of us who actually love this drama.
Such a frustrating show. I am mad I've watched up to 35 episodes on a mad binge only to find that I hate both main characters. It started off decently but started getting more and more insufferable as the episodes progress. The main female character is the most irritating little shit ever. She acts rashly with no consequences. She gets saved a lot from dire situations because she's has plot armor. She's supposedly in love with Hwang Taiji but constantly puts herself in danger by running away from him and then having him miraculously saving her shitty ass every single time. Her character has no arc. She's doesn't change in anyway. She gets older but not wiser. She continues to be a little shit throughout the drama but survives because everyones loves her. Hwang Taiji is supposed to be smart (next emperor level smart) but he has a quick temper and is easily fooled. They are supposed to be in love but the two leads have zero chemistry. The acting is terrible. All three leads have only two faces. The second prince and Hwang Taiji treat Dongge the same with the same problems yet somehow Dongge feels like Hwang Taiji is better for her? I have a hard time continuing this bs drama and I have a lot to say about it because I already wasted so much of my time. Anyway, I am going to drop it. If you want to watch a similar drama with better writing... watch Scarlet Heart.

Same here. I watched two episodes and had to give it up. I feel like this is the type of drama that if you watch on, you will start to see its charm. However, I really did not care at all for any of the characters after two episodes and it being a 23 episode drama, not caring after 2 episodes says a lot. It's definitely a drama for others who enjoy these types of dramas.
I just need Mark and Mimi to reunite in another work again. I will watch anything with the two of them. It would be a bonus if it's Mark, Mimi and the same director of TMOPB because the three of them make a brilliant team. I am content watching the three of them in a room together ripping at each other. It's no wonder TMOPB did so well. Look at how much chemistry was on set! They were all from different places. China, Hong Kong and Taiwan...all with different dialects, still got along so well.

Guys, everyone is arguing apples and oranges. Both are great and are too different to be compared to each other. I would know, I am currently hooked on Eternal Love and need a way out. Also, as much as I love Eternal Love, I did not give it a 10. I did give Nirvana in Fire a 10 though... it is still my all time favorite Asian drama EVER. EVER. Cannot be topped...
