Review MAD SAD BAD
Hello. Where did you watch this?
It was on dramafever back in the day, obviously that won't help you now, though. Sorry!

I wanted to like this, but I couldn't get over them talking about him being "cured" sure, average people might…
There was a lot of discussion at the time about that being a translation issue. Not sure what subs you were watching with, but I do recall that the consensus at the time was that the translation should have been something more like "treat" rather than "cure". But I haven't watched it since it came out, so I can't be 100% sure

So I found this from the ‘Lesbian Relationship’ tag, so I’m wondering if there’s actually anything like…
Nothing overt. And it's kind of left up to your own interpretation of their relationship whether it's romantic love or not. But it's an intriguing relationship, definitely.

cannned laughter is one thing, but they really did went all the way with their canned oohs, aahs, woohoos and…
They did really go overboard with the weird "woo" and other reaction noises in the first episode, but it definitely is better after that. Or I stopped noticing it. But I'm pretty sure there's a lot less of that after that one episode.

The writer has a bad record Im worried..
Nah, he wrote the good part of Inspiring Generation and God of Noodles was actually pretty good

Is this one of those dramas with the bad kid's parents are immune cause they bribe everybody until the last episode…
Kind of? There is a twist, though, and the ending is pretty satisfying

I read the book a long time ago, and have not seen the Hulu series at all. The book stuck with me, though. I like your analysis of the characters and while I don't think an adaptation of this book would ever fly on Korean TV, it's interesting to think about it in a different context like this.

Being from the US, and Atwood being Canadian, I have always tended to view it from that perspective, as a meditation on what might be the logical conclusion if some fringe branch of evangelicals or a cult or whatever somehow built a completely twisted version of society (scary, of course, and sometimes I think not that farfetched). So to put it in Korea, the context might be different, but since it's all speculation, worst case scenario stuff anyway, I'm sure there could (in theory) be an adaptation with a Korean spin that would resonate with that audience like the novel did with me. There's not really ever been a kdrama with that kind of alternate world/dystopian theme on that scale, to my knowledge (although Circle has the dystopian thing and Save Me has the scary cult thing). That said, I really wish there would be more of those!

Anyway, thanks for an interesting article!

Bridal mask did exceptionally well in Korea. It was a super hit domestically and internationally.
Yeah, was going to mention that as well. Moon that Embraces the Sun was the enormous hit that year, but Bridal Mask was pretty up there in terms of ratings. One of the highest rated weekday dramas that year, definitely.

I really want to watch this. I wish someone could get the video footage from dramafever and that a subbing team…
Subtitles already exist, and the episodes are out there too, sourced from both DVD and TV. But really, it would be nice if this got picked up by one of the other legal streaming sites now that dramafever went *poof*

I have two suggestions for (possibly) curing your Shunji problem! Park Ki Woong in War of the Arrows and A Man's Story. One character is horrible and one is precious and neither is like Shunji.

Leader Mo, though. I didn't finish Inspiring Generation but he's about all I remember from it. Him and Jo Dong Hyuk's character. Oh, and Uhm Tae Goo too! Such a great cast of side characters.
