Hilarious gangster comedy, but not for the faint of heart nor 'prudes'

A "bro" (gangster) escapes from his potential murderers into a hair salon. where a hair washer is practicing hair cuts.
After the local boss dies, the bro is quickly assigned as the new boss of the gang, and his task is to seek revenge for the killing of his former boss by an unknown group of Thai men.
The boss is head over heels with the hair washer, and decides she should now cut his hair, and everyone he knows, should too. As he tries to figure out who was behind the attack, he also tries to woo the hair washer turned stylist.

Negative points: the music doesn't stand out much unless for comedic effect, and the movie is a tad long.

Positive points:
Chemistry: You may not have thought it from the start, but man these two have great chemistry.

The sense of humor:
e.g. The hair washer does an awful job throughout most of the movie, which makes for a fun watch: everyone who cares about her, or who is related to the boss, will show up in the show with a god awful haircut, potentially in a hideous color Its a brilliant way to show who's on whose team.

Keeps it light: The gruesome parts are usually exaggerated for comedic effect, but I'd still not advise this movie to the faint of heart.
There were a lot of crude sexual references I thought were pretty hilarious in how unnecessary they were (intentionally written for sure). Although others mentioned this as a negative, I thought it was funny.

The dialogues between the gang members are hilarious at times. One of my favorite scenes is when (another) hair stylist tries to walk into the salon, but gangsters are in the way. They decide to make her learn everyone's names, and there's a definite reference to Monty Python in that scene, with a mandarin (?) twist.

The scene with the boss bro and the hair stylist at her place was hilarious, especially when he comes back later.

I did not notice a single actor who was awful; all of them did a great job keeping in character. I had literal tears streaming down my face.

All in all, I highly suggest watching this if you love adult humor and a decent plot.

PLEASE watch until the very last part of the credits, as it stays funny until the literal last second. They did the actress dirty haha.

Loved this movie so much!

Warm and comforting

This was a really comforting movie despite its original premise being so sad; the entire vibe of the family spending time together just cooking or cleaning while it rains outside makes you feel really warm.

In terms of plot and story, I honestly don't think it offers up anything new, but it still successfully makes use of one of my favorite tropes — one person has been pining for a long time just for you to find out the other person has been pining for even longer — so this isn't even even a complaint.

I do wish this was longer. I'm not sure how or where it would go, but I felt like I didn't get enough scenes with the leads and their son for me to see them as parents, as opposed to just being a couple (since we got a lot of their love story, which I loved). The theme seemed to bounce between romance and family without being able to make it cohesive.

Overall, I'd say the story goes pretty much as expected, but it's still a really comforting watch.

People are better than this

Let me start by saying that this is a horror movie without you realizing that it is a horror. It looks realistic and familiar with characters you meet in your daily life but with a twist that somehow always take the turn for the worst. So i understand the title "New normal" because this are the normal people in "new" shocking situations. The movie represents the new normal as if this is the new reality we live in but I strongly believe that humans in real world are much better then those in this movie.

Now what i liked and what i didn't like. I liked the actors, the music, the atmosphere, the production and the pace of the story. Everything was nicely done. I am not a fan of short stories because they mostly end up superficial, shallow and over simplistic, but in this movie they were purposely connected by presenting a nihilistic society.

And that is what i didn't like. My heart is not agreeing with the message of this movie. I believe in Jesus who died on the cross out of love to save the world which is opposite to the one small but important detail in the movie (a minor spoiler ahead!!!), and that is a fluorescent lamp in the shape of a cross with an inscription “F*** the World” that one of the main protagonists has on the wall. The movie suggest that you should trust the people and that the world is damned but i believe in good people and in salvation.

goodish indie short movie

Overall: a decent way to spend 30 minutes. Aired on Wayufilm's YouTube channel https://youtu.be/zFifCdlf9e0?si=SlYCdQQSoMRJF4kV

Content Warnings: homophobia, vomiting, slap

What I Liked
- centered on the two leads with just 2 other characters
- sweet moments*
- good production value for an indie short movie

Room For Improvement
- *I wish their getting to know you/falling in love wasn't done in montages, they could have cut/reduced other scenes (including the time jump) and actually had these scenes with dialogue
- I didn't take off points but I don't think a homophobic parent would have queer movie posters on the wall of their workplace (pretty sure that set is the production's office, however, they could have removed the posters or covered them up)
- because it was a time jump it felt like a very fast/unrealistic turn around for the dad
- using alcohol as a catalyst to their spending time/relationship

Funny movie

A beautiful story, although it is somewhat ordinary and not new, but the film in general is worth watching, beautiful and entertaining If you want a movie for the evening away from complicated and sad stories, I advise you to watch it I watched it on the last days of the year... and thus the last movie I watched will be in 2023... A perfect choice for a light-hearted, enjoyable watch.

"Our Secret Diary" is a delightful and heartwarming journey into the realm of teenage romance, a film that effortlessly captures the essence of youth, innocence, and the beauty of simple, unspoken emotions.

The story involves around Nozomi, a second-year high school student, who finds herself in the middle of a love confession mix-up. A twist of fate leads to an enchanting exchange diary with Setoyama, the school's heartthrob. While the premise sounds familiar, the film unfolds as a unique story, capturing the magic of high school romance with an authentic touch.

Much like the tentative steps of a first dance, the movie takes a moment to find its rhythm. The initial 15 minutes may feel a bit awkward, but it's a necessary stumble that eventually leads to a graceful flow through the lives of its characters. The beauty lies not just in what is said, but in the unspoken language of glances and expressions.

"Our Secret Diary" stands out in its commitment to simplicity—a rarity in a world obsessed with dramatic twists. The story stays true to its core theme, exploring teenage love and the delicate threads of relationships. This deliberate choice allows the narrative to breathe, creating a genuine and immersive experience.

The characters, portrayed with sincerity and charm, invite you into their world. Nozomi, despite an initial awkwardness, grows into a character with depth and relatability, unfolding like the pages of a cherished diary. The chemistry between the leads is evident, their interactions echoing with the sweet notes of first love.

The film extends beyond the realm of romance, delving into the often-overlooked things of teenage friendships. It becomes a canvas for lessons in understanding and forgiveness, underscored by the simple yet powerful act of apologizing. This touch of authenticity adds layers to the narrative, making it more than just a love story.

At the heart of the movie is a lie that serves as a catalyst for both angst and revelation. The storytelling skillfully navigates the complexities of unrequited love, leaving the audience with a satisfying emotional payoff. It's a reminder of the bittersweet nature of untruths and the joy that comes with resolution.

"Our Secret Diary" is, in essence, a symphony of emotions. Heartwarming moments are scattered like musical notes throughout the film, creating a lingering resonance that stays with you. The movie isn't aiming to redefine the romance genre; instead, it makes you to embrace the simplicity and beauty of young love.

*Don't miss the post-credit scene for an extra dose of charm.*

In a cinematic landscape often clouded with complexities, "Our Secret Diary" is a cozy and sweet retreat. It invites you to revisit the excitement of teenage crushes, the thrill of unexpected connections, and the warmth of genuine friendships. Like a familiar melody, it promises comfort—a movie to be revisited whenever you yearn for the simple and beautiful cadence of youth.

Bad

This randomly appeared in my netflix suggestions today. The movie is totally new, it has no reviews, only one comment, and almost no genres and tags defined. So, I was pretty much going in blind.

The story begins with a body of a woman being found. Then it follows two storylines: that of a troubled detective with suicidal thoughts and her incompetent sidekick, and of ex boyfriend and sister of murdered woman. Both sides are working independently at first to find the killer, but eventually their paths cross and they start working together.

Doesn't sound particularly original, right?
However, merely being unoriginal isn't this movie's greatest vice. After all, if you're a fan of detective noir and thrillers, you might enjoy it even if you've seen something like this many times before. But....

-Every character is a dumbass, making baffling, irrational and suicidal choices over and over again. Also, they have severe communication issues.
-The police is incompetent.
-In reality, the story wouldn't even happen. Fl, who tried to commit suicide with a police gun in the beginning of the movie, would have been involuntarily locked in mental hospital, not assigned a murder case.
-The acting from everyone except the main leads is bad, to the point that some scenes that were meant to be serious look like a parody.
-The representation of Thai people is bad, they are all short, brown and ugly. For a movie that's trying to put them in a sympathetic light, it isn't working.
-What could have been a good soundtrack is masked by constant screaming. You don't know how to build drama? Make them SCREAM.
-The pace is slow, the narrative is trying to use vague flashbacks and prolonged slow slice of life scenes to give these characters more depth then they actually have.

Overall I don't recommend it, there are many better thrillers out there.

Well Deserved Awards at MMFF 2023

Love this movie, I consider this well made. I love that they gave the most prominent priest role to a less well known actor, proven right since he really acted well in this movie and even won best actor at MMFF awards. Cedric Juan, you really did amazing in this movie. All the other actors are great too. Kudos as well to director Pepe Diokno for the great direction of this movie. Great movie, must watch for all but especially Filipinos.
My only main criticism is the costumes. The ties the men were wearing look like modern neckties and not something from the 19th century.

As a continuation to the drama series, the story hits harder than if it was a stand alone movie. As a movie, the first two thirds of the movie moved at a pretty slow pace and the inclusion of side characters didn’t really make sense or added to the storyline. However, if you’re a fan of the drama series, the snippets of side characters will bring back the nostalgia of a bigger and deeper world than can be contained within a movie.

Although the development and build-up was slow and at times, confusing, the last third of the movie really tied everything together and gave meaning to the characters’ actions. In the end, I think the writers ended up with a nice, cohesive story for the two characters where the focus was the depth of their feelings for each other rather than the mysterious action of time travel. A worthy watch for fans of the original drama or new watchers alike.

not always you can do a right choice

I think it was beautiful and melodramatic. Only when you live enough you can tell when true love appears and it doesn’t choose the right moment and fair solution. I loved this movie for this dramatic real perspective of the one in pain of love. so true to real life. People can easily judge the adultery it’s true it’s unfair when it’s plain. I can agree to the anger of betrayal of those who are left behind and are also being fooled. It’s cruel to others but I love the male lead showing his arose pain and shooting his heart.
I appreciate the actors and story as well as a real life depicting. the big pain and suffering just as real life can bring. you can judge it yourself by watching of course but I think they did a great job, that at the end we empathize with the ML even if committing a sin. great acting for me and directing.

The movie didn't excite me at all at first, it's just stupid. However, it wasn't just stupid (I wanted to give a rating of 2), it's second stupid, and suddenly the film, which won two wins and 9 nominations at various film festivals, didn't bother me so much anymore, on the contrary, I started to feel that even the actors kidding ourselves. The story of the "transformation" of Remington (nice Martin Escudero) got me gradually, and the dismembering monsters were a lot of fun, so in the end...satisfaction, it's just a shame about the poor quality of the copy.

This movie didn't give me much, although I watched it mainly because of Paolo Rivera, he didn't really play the lead role. SRO (Sonny, Roldan, Oscar) and marketable sex in a shabby cinema left me cold this time, not only because of the story, which didn't go anywhere, but also because of the processing. But still another gem in my pinoy collection.

A Visual Gem with a Moving Storyline

It pulls you in, emotionally, to the humid and oppressive world of drugs and trafficking. The only light, life, and freedom is experienced in the development of the leads relationship with the Ballerina which we can only see in flashback but it becomes instantly obvious why it triggers such loyalty.

Think "Hard Candy" meets "Atomic Blonde". Action-packed, dark, and gritty. But with just enough "wink-wink-nudge-nudge" to disrupt waves that threaten to carry you deeply into the very dark place which is the premise of the movie.
