An inspiring story about leaving a memory

The trailer is pretty deceiving. You'd think it's a sports comedy but it's not the core of the story. This movie is an emotional journey about South Korea's team at the Homeless World Cup in 2010, and how they won with a memory.

The movie follows our lead, Yoon Hongdae with a rebellious attitude--the same one he carried ever since he decided to pursue football as a child. That attitude gets him in trouble. As discipline, he had to become a coach for this team. Throughout the movie, we witness a lot of his character development alongside all 6 of the team members. They all had their own reason for being in the team, whether it be for their family, loved one, or for their own passion. This championship was a final chance to redeem their future.

But it's not just about winning and leaving a record. Rather than a record, they wish to leave a memory. They succeeded at that, and after the movie I even searched about the real events that happened. I also cried more than I expected..... it's the motivational-touchy type of feeling. The games immerse you and make it feel like you were there, cheering too.

To be honest, the plot doesn't have a very special formula, but there was enough time to explore each character. Just enough to get attached to everyone and start rooting for them as loudly as the crowd. Solid 8/10!! Really loved the OSTs too! :)

"In a mad world, only the mad are sane"

One of the meanings for Ran in Japanese is "chaos". You know when you are about to watch a film by Kurosawa based on Shakespeare's "King Lear" you are going to experience a theatrical marvel, chaos, and a boat load of pain. Kurosawa used all of his skills to bring to life the story of a king driven mad by his traitorous children. At 75, his directorial skills were far from obsolete. He made a stunningly beautiful and heartbreaking tragic epic in a manner only he could do.

Hidetora who had unified his region through fire and the sword and an utter lack of mercy announces that he is ready to retire. Taro, his eldest son, flatters him feigning humility when Hidetora bequeaths the title to him. He gives the two other sons, Jiro and Saburo their own castles, confident that his actions will bring lasting peace to the valley. Far from a sycophantic speech to his father, Saburo, the only son who loves him, tells him the plan will never work as does the court jester. Saburo and Hidetora's loyal retainer, Tango, are both banished for speaking the truth. It doesn't take long for Hidetora to realize his youngest son was right. Taro, at the bequest of his wife, Lady Kaede, humiliates his father by forcing him to sign a pledge of loyalty and into handing over the title Hidetora had sought to retain. Hidetora travels to Jiro's castle but finds no welcome from his middle son. Upon hearing the third castle is empty he and his entourage seek shelter there only to fall into a trap. Taro and Jiro join hands to destroy their father. After every last man and woman loyal to Hidetora is killed trying to protect their lord, Taro is "accidentally" killed, and his father is allowed to walk out of the burning keep, his mind completely broken. For all of the victories in his life, he could not see the evil his sons had harbored in their hearts and that evil would bring all he'd fought for and attained to naught.

***Warning! 417 year old spoiler ahead in the next paragraph!!!***

As Hidetora wanders aimlessly, his jester and Tango find him and care for him. Lady Kaede seduces Jiro and orders him to have his gentle wife, Sue, murdered. When Saburo comes to find his father, Lady Kaede incites Jiro to attack Saburo's men after agreeing to a truce. Saburo finds his disturbed father in a rocky "grave". Saburo's forgiveness clears Hidetora's mind and they dream of telling tales and living together. Jiro's man kills Saburo and Hidetora loses all hope and dies next to him. Like in King Lear, the family was extinguished. Saburo's men and allies triumphantly kill Jiro and his men laying waste to the last of Hidetora's family.

Much like King Lear, Ran ended with the tragic and inevitable loss of life based on a father's bloody past, pride, and blindness to the truth. Hidetora was haunted by all those he'd killed, including the families of his daughters-in-law. Unable to escape the ghosts of his cruel actions, Hidetora and his jester were forced to take refuge among the rubble of the keep he'd burned, at one time spending the night in the hut of a man he'd blinded. His jester ever speaking the truth and folly of his actions. There were no heroes in this film. Hidetora had blood on his hands. Jiro and Taro were murderous and duplicitous. Although Lady Kaede was widely hated, her vengeful actions, with the exception of her hatred of the Lady Sue, were understandable. Only Saburo who spoke the truth perhaps had a vision for a better tomorrow and he ended up paying for his father's sins.

At times, Kurosawa showed the chaos of battle in a beautiful manner with soldiers racing across fields and in castle keeps, silently except for the haunting music. Just as quickly the exquisitely orchestrated military dances devolved into the brutality of war with bodies filled with arrows, severed limbs, and crimson blood dripping ceilings. Fire and smoke choked out all sanity and peace. At one point, Hidetora wondered if he was in hell. He was in hell, a hell of his own making carved out by the carnage he had wrought during his life, the example his sons had learned from, pitting them against him and each other.

The opening scenery was gorgeous, vibrantly alive with verdant green hills. Kurosawa was truly a master of filling the screen with interesting movement and use of color. After the dye was set and the father gave his sons their inheritance, the windblown landscapes became dry and vast. As always, Kurosawa's fateful wind blew across the screen, tinged with either dust or smoke. Emi Wada won an Oscar for best costume design and it showed. The lifeless beige and gray backgrounds were the perfect contrast for her intricately and brilliantly hued costumes. The only detractor in this film for me was Nakadai's makeup. Much like the aging makeup on Mifune Toshiro in "I Want to Live", it was overly theatrical. The white and purple makeup obscured Nakadai's face and thus his unhinged performance.

Whether order was restored out of the familial chaos, is unknown. The film showed that confusion and disorder are always at the ready when truth is abandoned for what people pridefully want to hear. Children learn from what their parents do, not what they say, especially when their parent has been burning villages and castles to the ground in his desire to gain more. Hidetora made the classic mistake of thinking upon his retirement he had any say over what the next generation would do. Their desire for power was just as ravenous as his own had been-maybe more.

The message is timeless, whether in Shakespeare's day, Kurosawa's, or our own. As long as chaos bids us take what is not ours, view others as less than and disposable, we are bound to repeat the actions that bring sorrow instead of joy. The last character standing, blind atop a precipice, his painting of the Amida Buddha fallen and out of reach, reflected much of the mood of the film. The lust for power blinds men, their only hope for peace lost, ultimately leaving everything in ruins.

"It is the gods who weep. They see us killing each other over and over since time began…They can't save us from ourselves."

Ran was a gorgeous and enthralling film to watch and a cautionary tale as well.

More mature and darker than show..

I just finished Cheese in the Trap the series a day ago, and I wrote a very positive review (please check it out lol) and now I'm back with the movie version. You could say I'm hooked with this story. Cheese in the Trap the Movie is more dark, disturbing, and violent than it's predecessor. It focuses on the psychological side of the story and the crimes against women by men, such as stalking and assault. Like I warned with my review of the series, if you are looking for a fluffy cotton candy romance, Cheese in the trap is probably not for you. There is however far more cute romantic scenes in the series than in the movie. In fact, there is hardly any romantic scenes in the film. I recall only one kiss scene between the two leads and it was filmed from a distance.

Park Hae Jin reprises his role as the deceptively charming sociopath, Yoo Jung. This time around he plays Jung creepier with more edge. He gives a bone chilling performance and there were times I was actually scared. Was I watching a horror? There were two scenes that were my favorite in the whole movie. The first scene is when Yoo Jung is walking Seol back to her dorm. He smiles as she turns and walks into her building. When she is out of view, Jung's whole face changes and his mask comes off to reveal the eerie apathetic person he really is. It's all in the eyes with this scene. Park's eyes go from warm and loving to soulless like a shark, equal parts calculating, and cold. It's amazing acting. The other part of the film that was my favorite was when Jung was at a shooting range and another scene is shown simultaneously of one of his cat and mouse revenge games being played out as he had planned. His victim doesn't know what hit them and when Jung gets his target back at the shooting range it shows that every gunshot he made was a bulleye to the chest. This was an artful clever way to show Jung's brutality and that he never loses. He shoots to kill and never waivers. This scene was brilliantly accompanied by classical music. So it is safe to say Park Hae Jin nailed this character yet again. This is what you call perfect casting. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for any of the other characters in this film including the actress that played the female lead Hong Seol. She gives a very weak performance and I partially blame the script. It doesn't even seem like the same Seol from the series. Weak, pathetic, and not all there. It was like the lights were on but no one was home. Absolutely awful. I also really hated how they styled the female lead's hair. Seol is called "dog fur" by In Ho (2nd ml) because she's supposed to have wild frizzy curly red hair. This movie version Seol basically has straight hair with a slight wave at the ends so In Ho's endearing nickname doesn't even make sense here. Anyway, there are way too many issues I have with this movie to list them all, but I'll name a few...too many characters and not enough time to flesh them out, a non cohesive storyline, poor casting, rushed underdeveloped romantic relationship with the two leads etc.

And yet I rate this a 7.5. With all its faults, I still think Cheese in the Trap (movie) is worth watching. It's missing a lot and might be hard to follow if one hasn't watched the series first though. It has glimpses of genius and is a notable addition to the original webtoon story.

A Fun Action-Noir Film

Watched it in expectations of a really dark and gory film…

While I got a comedy film instead ? not complaining tho bcs I really love it!!

I always prefer a simple and fun action movies rather than the dark and serious ones. The Childre brands the film “action noir”, but in fact it is not really that much “noir” for me, more like “action noir-comedy”. If you love a fun movie without any stressful thoughts this one will be best for you. But if you prefer darker movies and difficult plot, you might be bored with this movie in their first half hours.

Kim Seonho really delivered the character of Childe/Nobleman well! His action scenes are so cool and scary but at the same time her micro expression while saying and doing random funny things also worth to wait. I would love to see more of Nobleman, he is so fun to watch (eventho he’s evil lol)

Really recommended!

too much emotional

my favourite actor died so for me it had a sad ending but can't say it had happy ending . The main character to whom story revolved got justice at the end . Due to one incident the whole life of some characters of the drama had changed . They went to deep sadness this had been shown at the end of the story . it was very emotional and touchy story . I had cried at watching some scenes of the movie.
acting by the actors were good .
must watch it .
How bullying destroyed the life of student this was an important part of the story . Jealousy leads to destruction this also been shown in the movie.

Underestimated the importance of pacing and plot building....

I'm not going to complain about acting or CGI here, it didn't fail in those departments, although it didn't wow me either. For me, the reason this movie fell short, and the reason I glazed over at least 20 minutes skipping at different points, was because the movie tried for too much, in too little time.
It aimed too high for emotionalism, sentimentality, failure/success, soldier camaraderie, love, loss, life lessons, moral of a story, rivalry and of course, painting the fighter jets in a flattering light, all in the span of 2 hours. The issue with that is it doesn't work. Movies with that much content and that many characters, have, at bare minimum, sequels, or more commonly now, trilogies and even rarely whole sagas (e.g Fast and Furious) in which they build up their characters (especially their main character/s) and all the relationships around them with feeling and over time.

Even as a fan of WY, I was once again left not actually feeling bad for his character when he went through hardship, especially because he went through so many separate instances of hardship in 40 minutes and then there was no time for character development or feeling to set in before someone (of forced) 'importance' died, and we sat through several minutes of funeral stuff for this guy and then some other stuff, and then time skip, Lei Yu healed and boom, he goes back, says a line, and he's one of the guys and they're all best friends. They hadn't even been much of friends to start with.

Nah, nah. Not for me. I need to actually care about at least ONE character, and I can't do that if a movie shoves ten main characters in my face in 2 hours. Ten main characters in a ten episode long series? Sure, it can be done. Ten main characters in a movie or book franchise spanning several installations? Yep. But in 2 hours? Nope.
Best to keep it tidy, have at most 2 main characters, some support roles, and easy on the 'big moving moments' so they actually have some impact. Anyway;

THE (generally) GOOD:
- I don't personally care for CGI being perfect, as long as it's watchable, this was watchable.
- Acting was fine, although the scenes went by far too quickly to really allow any acting to resonate or stand out.
- There was some humor here and there, which landed nicely, except again, went by too fast, lost in the scenes changing to accommodate all the stuff going on.
- I liked the bird strike scene, it was probably the high point of the movie for me if I have to choose one.

THE (generally) BAD:
- Unmemorable movie over all. I ended up skipping the filler between scenes and even the last fighting scene, I didn't care about a single character and I wouldn't recc this to anyone. Not even Top Gun or Army movie fans.
- I don't think this movie actually had a plot, or if it did, it was weak sauce. Lost in translation, too much excess dialogue about stuff and things that I barely remember.
- Quite a few parallels to the latest Top Gun movie, which achieved a high pay off in 2 hours, but lets not forget, it's the second film released as a highly anticipated sequel to a movie that is a long standing classic and Maverick is an established, well liked character. Lei Yu, with so many other 'mains' in need of screen time and attention, was barely allowed to be interesting.

Nothing ugly here, but nothing worth reccing either. As a person who enjoys military theme movies, this wasn't particularly entertaining. I haven't fallen asleep during a movie since Blade Runner 2017, but this movie had me feeling sleepy.

Beautiful

This is a beautiful movie about love, what people will do for love, and the power of love. When I watch Japanese movies or dramas, the movies seem too short, and the dramas too long. I wanted more of this movie. The editing and what happened in the movie were just too abrupt. I felt that the important things just got a slight mention and then the story quickly moved on.

The actors were all good. This movie was understated and calm. It was living a daily life of a girl that has to start over every day. Reading the signs posted in her bedroom, reading and writing in her journal every day. I was kind of bothered that she spent most of her time with her phone up in her face, taking pictures or videos, but it made sense to the story.

There's a twist that I didn't see coming. And boy, Japanese filmmakers sure know how to wring the emotions from a person!

It is all about balance and whole a lot of pain...

In not so many fancy words, I think this movie is phenomenal! Why?

• Two hours flew by in a second

• Intimate scenes are so raw and believable, and just the way I want them. If someone can do a nasty yet sensual NC scene that makes your stomach turn is Japanese. This time, the scenes are going so well along the story. Lets be honest, many Japanese movies do have explicit content that can overpower the story, or, especially dramas can lack any kind of sexual or intimate content. This does not make them bad, I am just talking about how well Egoist is balanced compared to Japanese movies, and in general.

• I enjoyed the balance between letting it go and being polite and restrained. Overall movie has that. And all of that is very nicely packed and topped with a hint of luxury and poverty.

• The whole story about financial and emotional compensation left me deeply wounded, so at the end of my short review, I would say this is not a love movie, nor a romance. This is movie filled with love by the people who were severely damaged by life and their families and they did love and they did care, the way they knew how.

• I feel I cannot pick the pieces of my heart after watching this movie and that is not that bad. It made me feel something, it made me feel a lot actually.

Anything but a sports movie.

So, I'm writing this movie after seeing 7.9 ratings, which I feel is very biased for this movie.
I will come to the point that this is an average movie that claims to be sport-comedy, but there's nothing sporty about this movie.
Half the time, it felt like they were playing Rugby, not Football. The Homeless Soccer Tournament was a big joke as there were no rules on fouls and penalties.
Coming to the acting, Park Seo Joon and IU both were good and were ably supported by the rest of the cast. But that's it. They were just good and not even once went beyond that.
But the main criticism is there's no character development. It seems like they have put a bunch of sob stories expecting to gain sympathy from the audience. It doesn't work in this era, maybe in the 80s and 90s but not now.
Giving sob stories is fine but you have to show their character development and this was hardly true for any of the characters. And as for the comedy, there were a few hits and misses, mostly misses. It only made me smile, not made me laugh, which I think is a must for a movie marketed as "sports-comedy".

Overall, a better effort was required from all, the director, the writer and the actors.

What price honor and glory?

The Sword asks the question, "what price honor and glory?" It's something I always wonder when I watch these films where swordsmen try to move up the pecking order by defeating someone ranked higher than themselves and toss the word honor around while doing it. "Excuse me, I know we don't have any disagreements, but would you mind terribly battling me to the death to see which of us is the superior swordsman?" This procedure never seemed very polite, much less honorable. In this film, Adam Cheng was forced to weigh the costs of spending years hunting for a legendary swordsman simply to test his skills.

Adam Cheng as Li Mak Yin befriends Ying Chih, a young swordswoman being hunted by a kidnapper, on the road to finding Hua/Wah, the legendary swordsman who has gone into hiding. Along the way he runs into his old flame who grew tired of waiting while he was on his quest and married Lin Wan (Norman Chu). Lin Wan turns out to be a vicious brute who wants Hua's sword Hon Sing. When Ying Chih is finally kidnapped Li goes to help her and is gifted the cursed sword Chi Mud to aid him by a woman who saved his life after a fierce battle with Lin's henchman. Turns out Ying Chih is Hua's daughter. In a very awkward moment after returning the man's daughter, Li asks if they could duel. After that interlude, the bodies start stacking up.

For a 1980 martial arts film, The Sword was slow, melancholic, and artfully done. Director Patrick Tam used beautiful framing and compositions combined with dramatic lighting. 1980's synth music was utilized for the soundtrack which actually worked quite well for setting the mood. The film asked how it felt to get what you wanted. Were the costs in innocent lives worth a lifetime of trying to beat and be the best? For the lone swordsman was the emptiness and loneliness of the lifestyle a satisfying tradeoff to feed one's pride and ambition?

The stunt work and fight choreography were acrobatic and quick. Despite being a more thoughtful movie, it did have gruesome ends to some of the fights. There were not only the traditional impalements, but one person decapitated himself and another was split in half. Chi Mud, much like The Ring of Power, was infused with hate and malice, and considered an evil sword. And just like the ring, it orchestrated the deadly destiny of several lives.

Adam Cheng played the conflicted and ambitious swordsman well. As Li weighed some of his exploitive actions, his life goals began to change. Norman Chu can be counted on to give depth to a villainous character and he did. Tien Feng, often cast as a baddie, was sympathetic as the aging considerate swordsman who cared for those around him. Jade Hsu found just the right balance as the firebrand daughter. She was forced to act idiotic for a scene but the writers finally put Ying Chih back on the right path. Eddy Ko, in a mostly silent role, made for a frightening henchman. Overall, the acting was quite good, especially for the genre.

The Sword was an excellent martial arts film for 1980 in comparison to so many others made during this time. The scenery, settings, and costumes were of a higher quality than most. For those looking for non-stop action, this might be a disappointment because it takes its time developing Li's character arc and the stakes being played for. The movie ends on a mournful note as Li moves beyond what he has been taught about honor and begins to understand that the real world has real consequences for his prideful actions. I would definitely recommend this film for fans of the genre. As always, I rate pre-1990 niche dramas on a curve.

6/27/23

*Many sites use a copy and pasted synopsis that says a swordsman and a samurai team up to find a blade. There is no samurai in this film, my guess is that it's either for a different movie or someone wrote a synopsis who had never seen this film.

A movie that broke my heart into million pieces

I'm writing this as my tears are still not yet dried from all the bawling I did because of this movie.

STORY
Road trip with a dying cancer patient isn't exactly the most original plot but the director has executed this story in the most original way possible. I love the way Aood's (girlfriend) stories gradually travel backward eventually leading up to how Boss and Aood's friendship was formed. They're all touching in different ways and all had me bawling my eyes out. However, the most tearjerking element was Aood's dad's death and the use of his dad's narration through out the film. I was bawling my eyes out by the time we got to the end. The ending was so bittersweet. 10/10 for writing. Not a single redundant dialogue. Everything was perfect from start to finish.

ACTING/CAST
Ice is absolutely incredible as Aood and you really feel our protagonist's pain as he goes on a journey to ask for forgiveness from people whom he's hurt. Tor really proved he got chops in the second half of the movie when the story of Boss and Prim unfolds. Violette and Tor has been in past projects together so there was no doubt they would have perfect chemistry and they absolutely delivered.

MUSIC
I fucking cried every time Aood opens a cassette tape from his father's radio show and as his father introduces the song, montages of Aood 's stories start unfolding. The music selection for this movie was top tier and immaculate. The director, the music score and composer were truly out for blood with the soundtrack for this movie and they did it. They shattered my heart into a million pieces with every song played in this movie. This film is a good example of how important soundtrack and film scores are to elevate the narrative being told.

REWATCH VALUE
I think it'll be hard for me to come back to watching this movie. It's quite a slow movie that's absolutely gonna break your heart so I would save this for sad rainy day because it's meant to be enjoyed fully from start to finish.

PRODUCTION
As expected of a GDH production, beautiful cinematography, ingenious transitions, brilliant writing. There are so many things to praise about the production of this film but if I had to choose one thing, it would be the excellent mise-en-scene of this film. Every shot is dazzling, intentional and fill with metaphors. It was truly beautiful.

OVERALL
It's an underrated gem that I think everyone should give it a try on a rainy day or when you're feeling down and you want to cry your heart out to a film, One For The Road is the perfect film for such a day.

a beautifully poignant modern romcom

one of my favorite romcoms of 2022. it's a very classic boy meets girl, unrequited crushes, bad-timings, friends to lovers trope indie-esque romcom (ironic because gdh is one of thailand's biggest film production companies).

i like that there's a lot of subversion to romcom clichés. regarding characterization, ml was a morally grey character and simping throughout the whole movie but i'm a sucker for him. there's references to the problematic nice guy tropes through out this film and i love it. i like ml's self awareness to a certain degree that he's not that nice guy.

many stellar comedic moments where i laughed out loud. like the humor is poignant and there's great comedic timing from both leads. really incredible performance from sky and june (ml & fl), especially with the plot line on missed timings. i liked how they did the open-ish happy ending which didn't feel rushed.

sky has been my absolute favorite actor since his tv series my ambulance and i knew june from bad genius series so i was really looking forward to their chemistry and they did not disappoint at all. 🫶

the story was told through ml's perspective so i'm kinda bummed we didn't get a full fleshed carved out character of what fl was like other than she was clueless and not knowing what to do with her life (which now that i think about, may be an intentional point from the director)

there are a lot of heartfelt moments in the film. my favorite supporting characters are probably ml's sisters. they really lighten the film's mood and make you root for ml despite ml makes a lot of dumb decisions. the most warm hearted moment is when ml just broke up with his ex and the sisters comfort him, like the whole cinema went 🥺.

the film has gorgeous cinematography. the director utilized a lot of filming techniques to get the message across and i particularly am impressed with the zoom-in-from-afar shots for comedic effect. very wes anderson-y.

i love that ml & fl made some "terrible" decisions but the story handled it so well that all decisions make sense & the call between ml/fl to wrap up/resolve the conflict is really beautiful (i almost cried T.T).

OMG! is from the same studio that made the super popular romcom Friendzone (2019) (which starred Baifern and Nine) and both romcoms share great similarities premise-wise (unrequited crush, simping ml, friends to lovers, missed timings) but i think love OMG! more. although OMG! has less couple moments between fl and ml, i felt OMG! has more heart and better cinematography for me than Friendzone so I left the cinema feeling more satisfied for OMG!

The movie is amazing. Utterly real, relatable and heart-wrenching in its portrayal of Birdy and Jia Han's relationship, and the way they navigate it from the beginning til the end. The acting and visuals are absolutely stellar and deserve an award. The only slightly less good thing about it is the editing, which sometimes made the movie look like a bunch of scenes added together rather than a coherent whole. But the movie is an absolute must-watch. It will stay in my memory for a very long time.

Best

If you love thrillers and zombie flicks, then you are in for a ride with this one. This film has it all: the hero arc, character development, insane action, relentless tension, drama, tear jerk, comedy, special effects, great cinematography and most of all excellent pace! Well done to the Korean cinema. Excellent film. Me and Korean cinema have always had a good relationship, I tend to enjoy their works and this right here is their coup de grace.Full of fantastic characters, great writing and several scenes that need to be seen to be believed Train To Busan shows how fresh the zombie sub genre can be in the right hands.

Watch it until after the credits

Satoh Takeru - yup, that's why I watched it. He's intense and, as usual, I enjoyed his performance. The scene where he sent her away was heartbreaking. His hair was too long and you couldn't see his eyes, and it seriously needed to be washed. But, I digress...

This movie is hard for me to rate. It left me feeling dissatisfied, for lack of a better word. Maybe there wasn't enough time to develop the characters more fully (but I don't care enough to watch the Korean version for more story). Part of my problem is that I don't like liars. That part of the story didn't go on for too terribly long. That she was a high school student was a little problematic, but it didn't seem too noticeable.

Everyone just seemed not too terribly likeable. I was bothered by the fact that the ML had money, fame, etc. and walked around like he'd just been given a death sentence. That's the point, I know, but it just irritated me.

Maybe it was my frame of mind when I watched it. If you want to try it, at least you won't be out too much time.
