A must-watch

This film has great action - well-choreographed, visceral, intense fight scenes that are as memorable as they are nasty - that's wrapped around an emotional core. The simplicity of the plot (dangerous man hunts down men who kidnapped a little girl) works so beautifully as a vehicle for the action scenes, but it also allows for the intense performances to shine through and take centre stage.
Won Bin steals the show as a broken man who seems to have shut in on himself in every way. When his little next door neighbour is kidnapped he goes on a rampage to bring her back. I believe him in every moment, as he reveals different facets of the character. I believed him as the taciturn, closed off pawn shop owner, as the lethal killer seeking revenge and justice, as the devastated husband losing his pregnant wife, and as the man we see at the end of the film: a man who has found some measure of peace and can now rest. His eyes are so expressive that he could carry a three minute close-up of just his face, and he makes the fight sequences so believable. A favourite scene is the one early on, when the two gangsters come to his apartment thinking he's just some chump next-door. He is so menacing that he barely has to move and you can feel the tension spike in the room. He has great physical presence.
The rest of the cast is very good, and the plot trucks along nicely. There is very little fat that gets in the way of the tale they are trying to tell. The fight scenes (for all the praise they get) are somewhat sparse, but in my opinion this only increases the tension in the film. For the first little while we actually rarely see our leading man actually fight. We see the very beginning and the aftermath, but never him in action. In my opinion, this makes his later fight scenes (in the club bathroom, the knife fight) even more memorable because they stand so on their own.
I want to make one final note about the cinematography of the film. In general I really enjoyed it, but I want to make special mention of the ending, particularly the scene where he realizes that the little girl isn't actually dead. The way it is shot and framed, and the lighting, is so dramatic and wonderful. The way the light catches his face and the way he looks up towards the sky -- it's like he's a man who is reckoning with God.
I think what sets this film apart from a lot of the other revenge action thrillers out there is the emotional intensity at the heart of the film. I BELIEVE in this man's singular love for this child, and I BELIEVE him when he says that he as nothing left to live for and nothing left to lose if she dies. He doesn't even care about going to jail afterward. It's about goodness existing in the world, and innocence, and him being able to protect the ones he cares about the way he couldn't before. Despite everything, there's something beautiful about the film. It feels as though we're witnessing someone's spiritual journey.

Best Korean Movie of All Time

I didn't watch too many South Korean movies to be honest, but even after watching some great films like Parasite, A Taxi Driver, Mother,..., this film is still my favortie of all time.
The story is so well written, it started with some cliche criminal plot revolved around cocaine, drug but it impressed me when they brought children from poor family into the story. I was so moved watching how these children live and some even die, those things actually happen in real life and in my country (Vietnam), that's why I was so sastified seeing Won Bin's character killed them all, his action also came from the fact he really loves children, since his own kid passed away before the birth. From the opening with a small theft of a stripper, to the ending where the stripper's daughter has to say goodbye with the neighbor who is close to her like father, the script is a rollercoaster of emotion and well builded storyline, I totally love it.
The acting in this fim is tremendous. Won Bin transformed from drama MC to action hero was incredible, Saeron had her best role until now at the age of 10, and the villiains are on another level, the brothers and the Thai assasin stole the scene everytime they appeared, this film probably has one of the best acting in an action movie of all time.
I wasn't impressed with the music as much as story and acting but it isn't bad at all, still played its role nicely.
I watched this film around 10 times now, it's not only great film but also rewatchable film, believe me you won't feel sleppy even when you had watched it 5 times :)

What a movie! Amazing action thriller movie with great performance, excellent screenplay and solid action scenes. Even though its a crime story, it'll still make you emotional thats the best part of south korean movies and dramas. The way they connect you with the character. Phenomenal! South korean movies are best in thriller genre. Bollywood movie ,Rocky Handsome was a remake of this movie but this movie is OUTSTANDING!. Thats why korean thriller movies are Top Notch! I rarely watch Korean movies, but I was looking for something to watch and I r ember seeing scenes of this movie on YouTube, and it sounded good. Before I get into the review i would like to put out a mature content warning because this film has a lot of blood, and swearing in it that I would like to put that out there before you watch this.

Story: You can give me a story about gangsters and I will eat it up. I love a story about the crime business and a man trying to take it Down. the story I give a 9.5.

Acting/Cast: Won Bin is our main lead here. I have not really seen anything from him before but he does not do a lot of TV shows he usually more of a movie actor. the other actors did a great job in their respectful roles, Kim Hae Won especially as the villain of the story. the acting/cast I give a 9.

Music: Their is really is not much to talk about the music. Their is music but mainly when your in an action scene you really do not need music, your sitting their emerce in it that every hit memorizes you don't really need music. The music I would give a 7.

Overall/ Re Watch value: the re watch value I give an 8, It is on Netflix so I watch it again when I am ready to. The overall value is a 9.5 I enjoyed this very much definitely a favorite now.

La vera forza non è nell'esplosione fragorosa, ma nel silenzio che la precede

Film difficile da guardare, scovato quasi per caso ma che mi ha tenuta incollata allo schermo dall’inizio alla fine. La pellicola è al tempo stesso un film d’azione brutale e un melodramma straziante, capace di farti stringere i pugni durante le scene di combattimento e di strapparti lacrime nel momento della quiete successiva alla tempesta.

La trama è essenziale: Cha Tae Sik vive come un'ombra. Ex agente segreto tormentato da un passato doloroso, gestisce un banco dei pegni in un quartiere degradato di Seul. I vicini lo chiamano "il fantasma del banco dei pegni" e sussurrano voci inquietanti sul suo conto. L'unica persona che riesce a scalfire la sua corazza di indifferenza è la piccola So Mi, una bambina di dieci anni trascurata da una madre tossicodipendente che lavora come ballerina in un locale. Quando la madre di So Mi commette l'errore di rubare della droga a una potente organizzazione criminale, madre e figlia vengono rapite. Tae Sik, che ha ritrovato un barlume di ragione di vivere in quell'amicizia improbabile, si taglia i capelli, affila i coltelli e si trasforma in ciò che era: un'arma letale determinata a scatenare l'inferno. Dietro il semplice rapimento si cela però qualcosa di molto più oscuro: un traffico di organi che tratta i bambini come merce, destinati a essere smembrati quando diventano "troppo grandi" per essere utili ad altri scopi.

Una storia – quella dell’uomo solitario dal passato oscuro che salva una bambina indifesa – che sa di visto e rivisto, anche in molti film occidentali. Ad essere però nuovo è l’approccio, la sensibilità nascosta nei dettagli, la capacità di rendere intimo anche lo spettacolo più travolgente. A titolo di esempio, una scena apparentemente banale ma di grande significato è quando So Mi applica un cerotto sul taglio alla fronte di uno dei rapitori: un sicario che uccide senza rimorso ma che in quel momento accetta quel gesto di tenerezza infantile con un silenzio che dice più di mille parole. In quel momento la belva acquista una dimensione umana e il suo gesto finale sembrerà di conseguenza meno forzato.

Passando al cast, Won Bin offre una prova magistrale. Il suo Tae Sik parla pochissimo: le parole escono da lui più difficilmente dei soldi da un bancomat in rosso. Ma i suoi occhi, il suo corpo, i silenzi parlano per lui. C'è una scena in cui guarda dentro il bagagliaio di un'auto; il film non mostra subito cosa vede, ma il suo sguardo disperato è sufficiente a far capire tutto. Altra prova degna di lode è quella della giovanissima Kim Sae Ron, una delle migliori interpretazioni infantili mai viste.

Anche sul fronte tecnico si è volato alto: l'azione è una coreografia di violenza geometrica. La scena del combattimento nel corridoio buio è da manuale: movimenti rapidissimi, montaggio chirurgico, coltelli che diventano prolungamenti del corpo. Ancora più sorprendente è il piano-sequenza in cui il protagonista corre lungo un corridoio e si lancia attraverso una vetrata, con la telecamera che sembra cadere insieme a lui nella strada sottostante. Ma la vera forza del film risiede nella sua capacità di rendere ogni lotta emotivamente significativa. Non si combatte per la giustizia astratta: Tae Sik combatte perchè ha perso tutto ciò che amava e l'unica cosa che gli resta è salvare quella bambina che gli ha ridato un cuore. O forse, più semplicemente, combatte per espiare: il suo passato di agente lo ha reso complice di orrori, e salvare So Mi è l'unica redenzione possibile.

Le scene, così come le tematiche affrontate, sono indubbiamente molto forti, violente e disturbanti: ci sono cadaveri smembrati e ricuciti, scene di violenza su donne e bambini, tossicodipendenti che si autosomministrano eroina, lavoro minorile, traffico di organi, regolamenti di conti tra pallottole e lame affilate imbrattate di sangue. Non è per tutti, sicuramente non per chi è delicato di stomaco. Eppure, non sono le scene visivamente più efferate ad avere l’impatto maggiore: in questo film anche il non visto sa diventare agghiacciante. C’è una scena in particolare, con i bambini radunati attorno al tavolo, dove la vecchia signora prende per mano una bambina per “riportarla a casa”. L’ultima immagine sarà quella delle sue piccole unghie colorate con faccine e colori diversi, per le quali ringrazia la piccola So Mi. Non la rivedremo più, non verrà mostrato il momento cruento della sua fine, ma la ritroveremo più avanti, ancora solo un’inquadratura di quelle unghie colorate, stavolta appartenenti un corpo in un cassetto estratto dalla cella frigorifera dell’obitorio. E’ un pugno allo stomaco, anche se di fatto non si è visto praticamente nulla.

In conclusione, un vero e proprio gioiello. Sia per chi ama l'azione ben coreografata, sia per chi è alla ricerca di una storia intensa, cruda e malinconica. Non è originale nelle premesse, ma è straordinario nell'esecuzione. Non è per i deboli di cuore, ma è capace di lasciare il segno in un modo che pochi action movie occidentali sanno fare. È un film che dimostra come la vera forza non sia mai nell'esplosione fragorosa, ma nel silenzio che la precede.

Un silence qui parle plus fort que les balles...

Ce film m’a scotchée 😱 !!! On sent tout de suite qu’on est face à un classique du cinéma coréen, et même plus d’une décennie après sa sortie, il tient encore sacrément bien la route 🎬👍🏻

L’ambiance est prenante dès les premières minutes.
Il y a cette tension sourde, une atmosphère pesante, et pourtant… j'ai senti assez rapidement qu’au milieu de toute cette violence, il y a une vraie émotion à venir 💣💔... Et elle est là. Silencieuse, puissante, bouleversante.

Won Bin est incroyable dans son rôle. Il n’a pas besoin de parler pour qu'on le comprenne. Chaque regard, chaque geste… il m'a embarqué dans sa douleur, dans sa rage, dans son besoin de protéger... 🖤🥺

Et puis il y a Kim Sae Ron... La petite lumière au milieu de tout ce chaos ✨. Elle crève l’écran avec une sincérité rare, une douceur fragile qui contraste avec la brutalité de l’histoire 🌧️. J’ai eu un pincement au cœur tout le long, en pensant à son départ prématuré...Un talent parti trop tôt… 💛🕊️

Ce film, c’est pas juste un film d’action, c’est une histoire sur la solitude, le deuil, la rédemption... C’est brutal, mais c’est vraiment humain, et profondément marquant 🧠🫶🏻🥲

Excelente e influyente película de acción.

Después de la infravalorada Cruel Winter Blues, Lee Jeong-beom sorprendió a todos con esta bomba que sin duda sentó las bases de lo que más tarde sería el nuevo cine de acción de la pasada década liderado por películas como The Raid y John Wick.

Won Bin se pone en la piel del misterioso protagonista demostrando una excelente capacidad física para las coreografías que desgraciadamente no ha vuelto a desatar en la gran pantalla, y Lee Jong-beom se destapa como un realizador a seguir para los fans de la acción más desmedida.

Tan buena, que incluso perdonamos el excesivo melodrama.
