Manman, Prisoner of Wei Shao's wits.

Rewatching this almost a year later, my notes and reactions still line up with how I felt the first time. If anything, the rewatch made me appreciate the character writing and relationship progression more because I could see the setup and payoff more clearly.

❁✿❀❁✿❀

⁂ My type of enemies to lovers

What I appreciated most is that this is an actual slow enemies-to-lovers story, not the kind where they argue once and then spend the rest of the show bickering like it's what being enemies are all about. Manman and Wei Shao actually start with actual hostility rooted in family history, bloodshed, and political betrayal. There is distrust baked into every early interaction.

Wei Shao does not warm up quickly and the show does not rush him. He is competent, disciplined, and principled, but emotionally blocked by grief and revenge. The drama does not pretend he is gentle from the start, because he still has to unlearn things. He is suspicious of Manman’s motives, reads almost every move as possible manipulation from the Qiao clan, and reacts badly when his trauma gets triggered. There are episodes where he is honestly very hard to like. He jumps to conclusions, lets anger drive his actions, and hurts Manman emotionally and nearly physically more than once. Still, even when he is harsh and guarded, he does not reduce her status or treat her cheaply. He keeps her position as Lady of Wei intact, which says a lot about his baseline principles even when his emotions are driven by revenge.

The drama also feels like Wei Shao’s personal emotional journey. He eventually softens, but it does not happen magically. What makes the shift a nice watch is that it happens in layers. First comes reluctant acknowledgment of Manman's wits and intelligence. Then respect for her political instincts and strategies. Then trust in specific situations. Then emotional dependence. He goes from seeing her as a threat, to a useful ally, to someone whose judgment he relies on, to someone he loves, actively wanting to protect and listen to. The change shows in how he speaks to her, how he believes her over time, and how often he checks himself after reacting badly. When he realizes he is wrong, he adjusts. He may not be good at apologies, but he changes how he handles similar situations later.

Also, it is ironically funny how often this undefeated battlefield warlord loses every verbal match with Manman and retreats with a pout and a side eye instead. His jealousy streak shows up a lot too, but the timing is usually comedic. Manman getting jealous and pouty over misunderstandings herself was also a cute balance.

Speaking of Manman, on the other hand, she never forgets that she walked into enemy territory through the marriage alliance, and she carries her clan's guilt with her. Even if Manman herself had no part in it, she never pretends the debt does not exist. A lot of her restraint and caution comes from knowing she walked into Wei territory carrying that history. Many of her decisions are made with the goal of not deepening resentment and not adding more burden to what her clan already owes.

She carries a huge part of why this drama works. She is not written as a damsel or a passive genius who only reacts. She is proactive, strategic, emotionally aware, and politically sharp. She adapts her approach depending on Wei Shao's mood, his triggers, and the political climate. She reads rooms well, understands power, and knows when to act gentle and when to be firm.

What I also really liked is how she treats Wei Shao not just as a political counterpart but as a partner, even with her own goals and even before their relationship becomes emotionally secure. She adjusts her behavior to protect his authority in public, redirects credit toward him when needed, and makes choices that strengthen his position with the people even when it might cost her own reputation. This is because even early on, when trust between them is still thin, Manman already recognizes that beneath his anger and prejudice of the Qiaos, he genuinely cares about civilians, which aligns with her own values. That becomes her anchor for how she deals with him. Instead of trying to melt him emotionally which she knew won't work, she works alongside his values. She treats him like someone capable of being better, not someone she needs to fix or submit to.

Even when she is cornered or treated unfairly, she thinks before reacting. Manman let people witness why while she is and will always be a Qiao, she is also the Lady of Wei. She uses timing, framing, and evidence to turn situations around. Most of her wins come from observation and planning, not luck or rescue. She saves situations again and again through her wits and negotiation skills.

When their relationship improves, I love that they do not become stupid for love. Neither of them gets watered down. When they soften, it is not because one becomes submissive, but it is because Wei Shao becomes more willing to meet Manman halfway, and vice versa. They stay sharp, stubborn (in good and bad ways), and capable. I also liked how their shared values become clearer over time. While they have their own priorities clear, both pushes for solutions that protect civilians, long term peace, and stability.

⁂ Why it’s a 9.5 and not a 10 for me

Not everything worked for me, but it's not something I consider a flaw. Just a nitpick lol.

E Huang absolutely overstayed her narrative welcome. She kept circling back into the story long after her role was already clear. The leads already felt something was off about her, but eventually couldn't do anything because evidence could not be pinned on her. This allowed her to have too much screen time for my liking, eventually letting her in Liu Yan's plans. Too many schemes, and not enough payoff shown on screen for her. Sure, I guess her realizing Bogong actually loved her even after seeing through her lies was already enough for her to stop everything, including her life. But man, we should've seen that part lol. I wanted to see more regret from E Huang and Liu Yan.

Qiao Fan’s father dying at Liu Yan’s hands instead of facing fuller consequences for his own greed and decisions felt like a lazy way to write his doom. He caused massive fallout, contributed to the chain of events that led to tragedy, and then exits without properly facing what he has done. For me, he would have been one of the biggest and far more stressful villains if E Huang and Liu Yan weren't in this drama lol. Because unlike others, he was just driven by greed and power. So, his end felt veryyyy unsatisfying.

And I am still not over Fan and Wei Liang’s death. On rewatch, Wei Liang's death still feels unnecessary. I can understand Fan's decision because it also freed Bi Zhi's undeniable love for her that also became his shackles, but for Wei Liang, I just could not understand at all. It was so sudden for me that the first time I watched it, I really thought plot armor would save him. Apparently not. And I am still blaming the writers for that one.

The almost perfect enemies to friends to lovers story

Yes it exists !! When the story, acting, casting is just right. When the plot is funny when it needs to be, serious when it needs to be. No overacting just good script and actors. The bromance is spot on. Nothing is too over the top or exaggerated. They don't try too hard for the audience to get the joke. Absolute joy to watch this drama. I have some specific scenes that I love to watch and rewatch. Ep 3 is one of them....only one complain. The baby talk FL does did get me annoyed and irritated from time to time. I don't know of this is how her acting is or demand from the script, but i did find myself cringe whenever she spoke or behaved in that 'I am a dumb woman what do I know' voice. But everything else was good enough for me to get over that, most times, and enjoy this drama.

Another rare gem

I have been in a costume drama drought since Blossom, so I tempered expectations when this drama premiered. I have learned the hard way that a costume drama can betray you and more often than naught too much time is spent on a convoluted political plot with nearly everyone dying.
Prisoner of Beauty has taught me to believe in costume dramas once again. Brilliantly remarkable from start to end, no other drama has affected me as emotionally, aside from The Untamed. The cast was absolutely perfect and everyone made me either love them or hate them with a vengeance. Each person in this drama played their role so well. Not a single moment was wasted and the character development was fantastic. Each person conveyed their emotions with such depth and scenes that never would have truly affected me in other dramas wrenched right into my soul here.
At the heart of the story is love and family. This drama never lost sight of that and it felt as if each episode was a lesson in love and forgiveness. Nothing came easily and the losses were painful. Wei Shao's trauma was never downplayed and I could understand the hatred and betrayal that he felt and continued to feel. Manman fixed something she didn't break, although she took full responsibility for it on behalf of her grandfather. Their growth was simply beautiful to watch and they will live on as one of my favourite costume drama couples (first place goes to Lan Zhan and Wei Wuxian forever).
This drama is filmed with such care and the scenes are really stunning that even a scene with no dialogue can be so utterly moving. Liu Yuning and Song Zu Er were magnificent and their emotions were conveyed so wholeheartedly. I'll miss this world they created for us very much.

Spoiler from here!

I always wait to watch a drama when it's nearly done airing (blame my impatient nature), so I knew about Wei Liang's death from the get go. I told myself to not get invested in his story and to just accept it. What a fool I was. I held it together through the scene of his killing, but broke down when I saw what they had done to his body and when Wei Qu grieved while holding him. I completely lost it in the last episode when they all visited his grave and Qiao Tao turns and sees him smiling and waving at her with those damn orchids in his arm. A truly cruel choice to do that to a fan favourite character, but his loss reverberated across everyone who loved him and was handled with such care that I could not bring myself to be angry about it.

As for Qiao Fan's death - this one I saw coming from the start. It seemed ominous when she and Bi Zhi were still very much part of the story. Her sacrifice was an act of true love for her husband, and I would also like to think to some extent for Manman as well because he did come close to killing Wei Shao. It was devastating, but again one I can live with.

One of the best drama ive watched in recent memory. The enemies to lovers troupe was done perfectly for which the relationship pacing was directed in a believable way. Im a real sucker for attraction at first sight but never love and this drama really pulled me in by how the director and writer build the main couple's relationship. From enemies to allies to friends then eventually lovers. Although the male lead did get subtley swayed by the fl's beauty, it was never a deal breaker for him to suddenly forget his generations of hatred towards the fl's family. I always felt that dramas that opt for the route of beauty to triumph over hatred is lazy writing and a complete distachment of reality. To have a strong and everlasting relationship, attraction and lust is never the answer, but care, discernment and communication is key and the drama really delivered on this point.

Characters
Honestly i think Xiao Qiao is one of the best female lead ive watched so far. As quoted from the drama, she was like water- adaptable, persistant and strong. Yes, she is beautiful but she is so much more than that. Xiao Qiao embodies the tranquility of a calm and peaceful spring lake but will show controlled anger when needed. I love how the drama didnt make her seem like a mary sue where she was born with all the qualities that a female lead should have, but rather she picked it up from her family. The wisdom and strategic mind from her grandad, her love for her subjects from her dad and the attention to detail and care on household matters from her aunt. Xiao Qiao knows when to strategically back off when needed and was never one to demand the ML to see from her perspective. She was never excessively self righteous but rather down to earth and pragmatic .Any sort of misunderstanding was immediately addresed by her and she didnt made any excuses when she was wrong. Even those that had supposedly wronged her, she didnt fight fire with fire but instead seeked a peaceful solution.

Wei shao is a cold blooded and ruthless person that only cares for vengence against those who wronged him. I really enjoyed his duality of being a clumsy husband in love while still maintaining his stern image of being a ruler of a great nation. He enjoys Xiao Qiao's care for him but it doesnt really change his hatred towards the Qiao family. But through Xiao Qiao's constant effort, he finally understood the meaning of love and having a significant other. WS was written as a tortured character that was lonely but finally found solace in XQ that truly understood his wants and needs. She was his missing puzzle piece and the drama conveyed it beautifully.

Chemistry
The chemistry between the leads were so intimate and endearing. The teasing and push and pull was so sweet and cute for a young couple in love. They were so vulnerable with each other and it felt like an invasion of their privacy .

Cast
SZE is my favourite actress right now, the emotional depths displayed by her felt so raw and real. She pulls off the graceful and regal image of a noblewomen so well, but can be childish and cute when angered. Her drunk scene was so effortlessly adorable and never once felt cringey or forced. She is definately a multi faceted actress that truly embodies the character when needed . I didnt even realise she was the bratty kid from The Bond until i looked up her name. A complete win to casting team and cant wait for her new drama coming up.

LYN was someone ive seen in passing in other dramas like the long balled and TSOTPG, but ive never finish any of those drama mainly cause the story felt too draggy. Honestly felt his acting in those drama was passable but nothing ground breaking. But boy brought his acting chops to TPOB and left no crumbs. His scenes as a lovesick puppy craving for attention from his wife was chef kiss and omg his height is so damm attractive.

All the supporting cast did a great job from the villains to the 4 generals. A big shoutout to the actor and actress playing wei liang and xiao tao, as their scenes were so cute.

Pacing
The whole story progressed well with the exeption of the last 3 episodes which felt rush. I felt like the team made the big war scene a little too unrealistic with questionable decisions made by the main villains. I wish the story also didnt dumb down Bi Zhi so much to the point that it made me frustrated.

All in all, the drama was a million times better than its novel counterpart which only emphasized the physical attraction between the MCs with no emotional depth.

With all its flaws, this gem of a drama has officially made me its willing prisoner and i dont see any chance of escaping anytime soon.

A Drama That Satisfies Both Heart and Mind

This drama is truly epic. The ML and FL completely satisfied my cognitive thirst. They are intelligent, level-headed, and embody all the positive traits of responsible adults.

Their love story is not exaggerated and does not overshadow the main plot. I still can’t believe I finished it in just four days despite working full-time.

I genuinely liked the Wei family; they are dignified people. As for the Qiao family, I don’t have much to say. Except for the biological father, the aunt, and the younger brother, I have no respect for any of the other characters in FL’s family, especially her cousin. She does nothing but cry. She seems to forget that her husband only became the village leader thanks to FL’s brilliant ideas and ML’s protection. Of course, I understand this contrast was intentional. While ML and FL rose as leaders because of their vision and genuine love for the people, the cousin and her husband only sought leadership out of survival, with little regard for those they governed.

This drama offered many fresh perspectives, and I wholeheartedly agree with the ML when he said that the FL was the only woman fit to be his wife and the mother of Wei’s future.

Stunned by how good this was.

I went into this completely unfamiliar with the leads. I kept seeing good reviews on reddit and here on MDL, and the premise interested me, so I gave it a shot.

I don't have a single complaint. The plot was phenomenal. I agree with some critics that the last few episodes felt a little rushed. But there were no loose threads in the end, I felt that it all tied together neatly. The loss of General Liang was devastating, but I saw it coming. Fan's death also made sense as it was the only way to free Bi Zhi from Liu Yan's control.

I loved, loved, loved this drama so much. There were some many compelling side characters - Wei Shao's loyal generals, Xiao Tao, Shi Yuan, Lady Xu, Gongsun... the script had a good balance of comedy and political intrigue. But its biggest strength was the romance between Man Man and Wei Shao. 😍 Sometimes in these shows, the slow burn is so drawn out, it's painful. Alternatively, the romance happens not so much quickly, but abruptly, and as a viewer you're just sort of forced to swallow it even if it feels too sudden.

But Man Man x Wei Shao? Their romance was perfect. It started out with so much distrust. Everything built between them felt so genuine and touching. I loved them so much, and I'm going to miss the tenderness between them! They were wonderful characters individually as well, which is also something not all dramas get right. I love how smart but guarded Man Man was, and seeing her slowly melt toward the Lord Wei. And him? First bitter, then clueless... but always with a heart of gold for his loved ones and his people. I adored them!! :)

Oh, and I should talk about the villains. Momma Wei started out as a busybody with some seriously clouded judgment, but I did appreciate her growth by the end. She was not really a larger villain, but I thought the different levels of villains (e.g. internal, external, easily dispatched, vanquished only at the end) were well portrayed. Liu Yan, on the other hand, was totally a character I underestimated at the start of the show. I had no idea he would end up being the last bad guy standing! After having caused so much trouble with Lady Noseless. 😂 I'm just glad they got their just desserts, even though we had to lose some beloved characters to get poetic justice. 😥

My last note will just be to praise the soundtrack. It really complemented the scenes and swept me away.

I MIGHT re-watch this one day, if I ever find the time. This show was that good.

Cried, Screamed, Shipped It—Enemy-to-Lovers Done Right

I’m giving this drama a solid 9 out of 10 for the acting alone. The entire cast nailed their roles, and the storyline really pulled me in. But I won’t lie—losing one of my favorite supporting characters absolutely wrecked me. I cried through the whole episode. Why do they always take the good ones?? 😭

Also, I did not see that twist with A'Fan coming… you know what I mean. And while I loved most of the pacing, I did catch myself zoning out a little when they got too deep into all the political talk and war planning.

The villains, though? Too good. So good that I genuinely wanted to punch the screen every time they appeared. That’s talent right there. 😂

The ending wasn’t super satisfying plot-wise, but at least everyone’s happy. Still, I really hope we get a Season 2! I’d love to see Ci become the lord of Yuanzhou, and I’m dying to know how Shiyuan’s love life turns out (give the girl some peace!). And honestly, I need to see A'Fan’s child grow up to become a badass general in Boya—manifesting that.

If you’re into enemy-to-lover tension, epic moments, and characters that get under your skin (in a good way), this drama is 100% worth watching.

Strong Story and actors

Without a doubt, this storyline is very strong. It doesn't need a lot bells and whistles because it offers a formula that works for most people:
1) Strong Conflict: revenge, marriage of convenience, war between states, jealousy
2) Strong leads: ML and FL have chemistry. Basically, Liu Yu Ning acted almost the same as he did in The Long Ballad with ZLS. He didn't need to improve because it's the formula for success for most MLs in romantic drama: cold, aloof, some comic lines, and romantic looks. Song Zu Er didn't need that many different expressions for her role either. She is a perfect actress for this type of roles: beautiful and coordinating with the scenery and old feminine outfits. Although they weren't require to stretch their acting abilities, whatever acting skills require for their roles, they were convincing.
3) Female empowerment: a strong FL who is not only beautiful, accomplished, intelligent, logical, loyal, etc... I mean who doesn't love such a woman?
4) Kissing - this drama should rate very high-
5) plot line - there was not too many things that were unexpected. Bad people always get what they deserve.

People who might not like this story:
Unrealistic plot, female empowerment to the point of making the ML appear weak as she resolved a lot of problems for him, family fighting (the cousin is a little annoying)
There is no really standout things for most people to hate.

I gave it a 10. My criteria is low: It's entertaining better than all the drama currently showing. I am not looking for heavy themes. I want the good to win, some humor, and romance. This drama delivers everything so it's a 10. It's not an oscar performance but I am not looking for one!

"I hope you're hungry... For nothing"

This drama was the biggest let down of the year. From the reviews to the edits, I expected a masterpiece enemies-to-lovers. But instead, I got an arrogant, bare-minimum, (lowkey) narcissistic male lead, and a female lead who (while smart, quick witted, and brave) not only justifies every single thing he does, but accepts his bare minimum acts as if it's out-of-this-world love instead of what it is.

Quick Disclaimer: This review is 100% my opinion — I’m not here to hate, just to share my thoughts! I respect everyone's opinions who liked this show! Also, SPOILERS AHEAD, so proceed with caution if you haven’t watched yet. Let’s keep the discussion respectful and fun! 💕

I had such high hopes walking into this drama because of how many people recommended it and at first, I got the hype. When the female lead, Qiao Man, set the sulfur on fire and then ran to him with a bunch of arrows behind her, I can't tell you how many times I went back. They really set this show up during the beginning. But sadly, as the episodes went on, it quickly went down hill. Let's break this up into "Good" and "Bad" (with subtitles) to keep it organized.

The Good
Qiao Man Really Stepped Up
Qiao Man was such a queen. I love when women in historical shows break the norms and act like a boss. She was so clever and she was guiding armies and slaying the game. Despite the relationship part (that I mention below) she was such a queen.

The Side Characters' Romance Carried
The best part of the show was the side characters' relationship. Wei Liang and Xiotao, and Bi Zhi and Qiao Fan were so cute. I loved watching their scenes and watching their relationships develop. They made the main relationship bareable.

The Bad
I Couldn't Stand Wei Shao
Wei Shao was so annoying, like, 90% of the time. He had such toxic masculinity that it was so hard to like him. I get that back in the day, most men had toxic masculinity, but this is a drama and things can be altered. Plus Wei Liang and Bi Zhi didn't act the way that he did. For example, he's the type of guy who would miss his wife terribly and yet would refuse to go and see her unless she came to him or asked for him. Like just go see your wife, we're tired. He never took the time to truly understand who Qiao Man was and it showed. I get that at first it's the thought that counts, but after a while, it becomes ridiculous.

And he was also incredibly PETTY! I couldn't stand how petty this man was. He was always overly mad at her for no reason and she always either justified it, or apologised (even if it wasn't her fault). It was like he loved a reason to be mad at her. And he'd be mad for so long too-- he'd even go as far as to sleep in the freezing government office because of his pettiness. Like when he read her wish boat and hurt because he thought he loved her more. First off, why does it matter if you love your wife more? And second, why go behind her back to read her note and then randomly be mad at her without even saying anything? It was like walking on eggshells with him and it was so overdone and not even worth it. I think he apologised once the entire show (and that wasn't even when he literally choked her).

I also couldn't stand how he did nothing but the bare minimum the entire show and everyone (in the show) seemed to have eaten it up. I get that he's a war lord and had his issues, but when he fell in love, he didn't do anything that wasn't already expected of a husband. When I watch dramas, I usually like/expect the husband to go above and beyond and do things many husbands/ men wouldn't do in the real world (like Sang Yan in The First Frost). I want to kick my feet and scream in my pillow! So when they not only act like a arrogant jerk the whole time but their redemption ark is just basic level husband things, it fails to land. He didn't bring much in terms of "husband goals" to begin with and what he brought, wasn't good enough. It just wasn't.

SLOWWWW Burn
Now I love a slow burn as much as the next person, but a show still needs to flow. This was much too much of a slow burn that they didn't even kiss until episode 29 (not drunk). Out of 36. This was much too slow and what made it worse is that they gave us nothing to kick our feet at until the near end of the show. And don't get me wrong, I fully understand that love is SOOO much more than intimate moments, but they didn't even give us any cute scenes continually throughout the show. We get like two cute scenes during the whole show up until ep 29..? What even is that? Like with Hidden Love, even though they didn't get together until later in the series, we were given enough cute scenes, full of chemistry, in the episodes leading up to it. And the male lead wasn't overly rude and blind during that time. So while it was also a slow burn, it wasn't the ML fighting his feelings for 60% of the show, then bare minimum effort for the next 20% before they finally kiss (and then some...) from episode 29 and up. It's like, I get slow and steady wins the race but it also doesn't. This didn't. Everyone finished and went home.

Qiao Man Was Too Good for Him
While Qiao Man had plenty of lovely qualities, she was way too lenient and forgiving for this man. Everytime he did something to her, she either justified it or blamed herself. Even when he chocked her, she justified it. It was so annoying watching her try so hard for a man that wasn't giving anything in return. She seemed to love him WAY MORE than he loved her and the writers didn't even bother to hide it.

And on top of that, I never understood when she said "He just seems cold but he's actually super kind and warm <3" Girl What? When? He was always mad and always cold. Once again, he gave her the bare minimum and she confused it for "Warmth and Kindness". I just couldn't wrap my head around their relationship and was way more interested in Bi Zhi and Qiao Fan.

Boya and Bi Zhi

Enough of the relationship, let's get into the storyline now. Anyone else think that Bi Zhi would've become the ruler of Boya and team up with Wei Shao to take control of other states? It was a bit disappointing when Bi Zhi became the Commander and then they just left it there. Like when they put the Qiao flag down, I thought it would've been the beginning of him taking control but they kind of just left it there.

The Ending
The ending was so unfortunately rushed. The show had nothing but filler for most of the middle episodes and when it finally got good, the show was at the end. The huge war and fights were squished into the last episode and the episode wasn't even longer than the rest. Most of the villains' in this show died off... quite pathetically. There was no fight, no intense near-death experiences, nothing. Despite the fact that they made such an uproar and shook the comfort of the Wei State, they died off in the span of 20 minutes. It really looked like the Wei Clan was going to be defeated and yet they won with a couple of speeches and like five really lucky, unkillable men. I wish they had the war brewing through the whole show and didn't wait until the final episode for the showdown. The defeat didn't go the way I expected and that wasn't a good thing. We didn't get enough time to process it and get into it.

I could keep going but this is getting long and you get my point. I really wanted to like this drama but I found it so hard too. I'm a drama reviewer (I have a blog) and I think it's forced me to take off the rose coloured glasses and see all the issues with dramas that I once overlooked. This show was so hard to like that the only reason I finished it was to tick it off my list. I hope no one got offended as that wasn't my intention.
Since everyone loved this drama (based on the reviews), what did you think of my points? Do any of you agree with me?

Prisoner of beauty is surprisingly GOOD!!

So, the drama that’s had me obsessing for weeks has finally ended, and I wanted to let out all my thoughts for a peace of mind.

First impressions: Unlike those who waited two years, I stumbled upon this drama by chance and was instantly drawn in by its phenomenal poster, which gave off major The King's Woman (2017) vibes. Song Zu Er’s visual presence in historical costume is simply beautiful. Her thick, flowing hair, warm brown eyeshadow, and occasional red lipstick enhanced her already striking visual. I would say the costume and makeup team really knew how to highlight her beauty on screen. As for Liu Yu Ning while his visual seems to have sparked mixed reactions, I honestly don’t understand the hate. His overall physique, like tall stature and broad shoulders, made him a convincing general. He may not have the typical flower boy visuals that are often the standard in modern idol dramas, but in the context of this idol historical drama, he actually looks striking and charismatic.

Genre shift: Like I said, from the poster and the plot summary, I expected a dark romance with a morally grey male lead. Since it’s based on a political marriage, I thought most of the story (maybe 60%) would focus on politics and power struggles. The "knife-to-the-throat" trope lasted only for the first few episodes, and then the drama soon shifted into something softer, more like a rom-com and a family drama. If they had focused more on the enemies-to-lovers trope, it probably could’ve been even more interesting. But honestly, I don’t think the shift was that bad. It’s just that many of us were expecting something different, so the change in tone came off as a surprise. In the end, the main focus was actually on healing and reconciliation between the two clans and once you accept that, the story makes more sense.

Character logic: The final four episodes were an emotional rollercoaster. Uncle Qiao’s betrayal felt a bit abrupt and forced. Okay, he is foolish and insecure, we get that. But siding with an enemy state that just massacred his people is just hard to justify. If both Qiao brothers were shown to be equally insecure, power-hungry or distrustful, the betrayal might have been more believable? Just my idea, but what if Uncle Qiao had secretly been close to the psycho Liu Yan all along, since Liu Yan lived with the Qiao family for five years? And then when both Wei and Liangya asked Yanzhou for help during the war, a major conflict between the two Qiao brothers breaks out or sth. Maybe that kind of backstory would’ve made his betrayal more believable?

Zheng Su, the useless villain: The drama could’ve focused more on war/strategy epic instead of jealous-women palace-ish drama. Personally, I found Zheng Shu’s character unnecessary. We already had Lady Yu Lou playing the jealous antagonist. That screen time might’ve been better used for intelligent military strategy (someone please take inspiration Red Cliff) to give more substance to Wei Shao’s general role.

Full-package romance: The romance was honestly well-executed. Unlike many dramas that barely give us five seconds of a wedding scene, if at all, this one gave us everything: a full married life, pregnancy, childbirth, and a happy ending that actually felt like proper closure . No complaints there. And there’s really no need to explain how good the chemistry between the FL and ML was: they set a whole new standard for intimate scenes. So yeah, full marks for the romance.

It's better to have a smart FL than a frustrating one: I’ve seen a lot of comments saying the drama made every other character, especially the male lead and the side characters, look foolish just to highlight the female lead’s intelligence. But honestly, I have no complaints. I’d much rather have that than one who constantly makes frustrating decisions and makes you want to scream at the screen. If that means she ends up outshining the rest, then so be it. And honestly, Manman is such a well-written character. It would’ve been great to explore more of her background like how her childhood shaped who she is, but even without that, she still felt complete. She made logical choices, stayed kind without being passive, and always stood up for herself and the people she cared about.

For me, The Prisoner of Beauty didn’t give me severe drama withdrawal, but definitely a moderate one. It’s not the best historical drama, but it’s also far from being “mid.” I’d place it above average. And I really hope and pray to Chinese drama gods (if they even exist) we get more historical dramas like this, with strong general male leads and smart, competent female leads.

The Wei of Life Through the Lens of Marriage

For my enemies to lovers enthusiasts, this is our drama to watch.

For my people who love forced/contract marriages, this is our drama to watch.

Who doesn’t love enemies to lovers and having to see them get married??? *raises hand*

From the very first gripping episode, I was completely locked in!

Liu Yuning portrays Wei Shao, our leading man. And let me tell you, the look of disgust and hate from Wei Shao was done so well that it sent chills down my spine, but at the same time I wanted more of it.

Song Zuer portrays Manman/Qiao Man our leading lady who ends up as our Lady Wei. From first glance she looks timid and obviously a beauty but do not let looks fool you, she’s calculating but also so gracious.

We’ve all seen dramas where the first look from both leads says a lot, but their first time seeing each other was explosive and left me wanting more of their interactions after that. The first time their eyes locked together, we the viewers just knew this was gonna be good. When you get to that part, you’ll understand what I mean. You just felt the vibes already.

Despite Wei Shao being fickle and pretentious for a lot of the beginning moments between him and Manman, I felt like Manman met his energy and he didn’t like that lol. Many moments where Wei Shao would openly admit he cannot out argue Manman, but this is coming from a man who is deemed scary and in charge of the Wei people. These are the first couple of signs where I see Wei Shao slowly giving in a little bit to Manman, but not fully. He’s not used to having someone go up against him, Manman is someone who tested him in the best way possible.

As the show progresses you can tell he is softening up to Manman yet he’s still testing her. Just because he’s married to her doesn’t mean he’s gotta accept her. Wei Shao needs to know where her loyalty lies — because from my understanding, yes she has the last name of Wei but is her heart still a Qiao? Wei Shao’s past left him super guarded and rightfully so. Because from his perspective this an enemy in his territory and he didn’t want to be caught with his guards down if he accepted her just because they share the same name now.

Manman becomes Wei Shao’s wife, the Lady Wei, but I gotta say, I would call her Lady Grace. She’s graceful in everything she does, she’s smart, she perseveres. She isn’t your typical weak female lead who needs saving all the time. It’s always nice to not see a damsel in distress. Despite being wronged by the Wei family a couple times, especially by some people like the mother in law, she always showed grace even she has to defend herself. Manman held herself in much dignity, that’s why I would call her Lady Grace, the way she spoke was eloquently even if she was basically calling someone out. I like this type of female lead a lot. She reminds me a lot of my aunt: soft spoken but you wouldn’t know she was calling you out due to the graceful and soft tone. 🥲

Manman in my opinion was well written and perfectly suitable for Wei Shao. Although both are flawed characters, I think that’s what makes the viewers drawn towards them as in visuals and eventually as a power couple.

Wei Shao to me was never someone heartless, he just has an edge to him that he purposely put out, get too close and you’ll get cut. I mean, if your family met the same fate as his, you’d be the same but at the same time you’d think someone with his type of trauma and history would be a monster but he actually isn’t. He cares a lot for his people and Manman saw through his hard shell, with that, she was able to help him grow with her.

We often get shows where one character helps the other grow and overcome obstacles. However they both helped each other, Wei Shao and Manman are two people who both didn’t want to yield. But with time, they both learn that in order to keep living, in order to help maintain structure and peace over a nation, you must yield and not always do things your way.

They both pushed each other to their limits and I think this is where their characters are developing the most. Despite never wanting to marry each other, in the end they realize how much they need each other. The love they have is the perfect slow burn, which is just my type of romance.

I think I pretty much rambled a lot and I’m sorry if my thoughts about this show is all over the place. But I need you guys to give this a chance if you’re a fan of the leads, and even if you’re not, you will surely become fans after watching.

The supporting characters are so funny and all precious, mainly the Wei generals and Manman’s maidservants. Their bicker and bantering were always fun to watch, you’ll enjoy it very much.

The OST is great, it captivates you into their world of ancient China, I currently got it on repeat on Spotify.

And overall, great show, if you like to see two people who are forced together and develop trust and love over time then this is for you.

At the end of the day, I’m just a sucker for handsome generals and strong female leads who take charge with her general, this show fits the bill.

Happy watching.
