I Didn’t Expect to Fall This Hard… But I Did (A Drama That Stays With You)
The Prisoner of Beauty is easily one of the most impressive dramas I’ve seen in the wuxia genre. Even though it’s only the second one I’ve tried (and I haven’t even finished the first) this drama pulled me in right from the start and hasn’t let go since. The storyline is strong and well-paced, with no unnecessary or draggy scenes. I especially loved how the relationship between the two leads developed. Watching them go from enemies to lovers felt natural and emotionally satisfying. Their chemistry is off the charts and really adds depth to the whole story.
Visually, the drama is stunning. The cinematography is beautiful, the soundtrack fits perfectly, and the overall production quality is top-notch. The cast is also a huge highlight. Every actor fits their role so well and brings something meaningful to the screen.
Liu Yu Ning deserves a special mention. His performance is captivating and full of emotion. I honestly feel like I’ve been missing out by not discovering him sooner.
I’m writing this review a month after finishing the drama... and the fact that I still can’t move on says everything. I’ve even finished Liu Yu Ning’s latest drama A Dream Within a Dream, but The Prisoner of Beauty continues to stay with me. That’s how deeply it affected me.
This is actually the first wuxia drama I’ve fully finished, and I couldn’t have picked a better one. From the story and characters to the visuals and music, everything just works so well together. It’s a drama I’ll definitely remember, and one I’d gladly recommend to anyone looking for something well-made and emotionally engaging.

I LOVE YOU LIU YUNING
"I absolutely loved The Prisoner of Beauty! Liu Yuning truly impressed me with his performance. He brought so much emotion, depth, and quiet strength to the role—it was impossible not to be drawn in. His expressions, especially in the more vulnerable moments, felt incredibly real and moving. You can see how much he’s grown as an actor. There’s a maturity in his acting now—more control, more soul. He doesn’t just play a role; he lives in it. And of course, his unique charm and presence made his character unforgettable.
This drama made me appreciate Liu Yuning even more. He’s no longer just a talented singer to me—he’s a serious actor who deserves recognition. I can’t wait to see what he does next!"

She is WATER?, He is STONE⛰️
"No matter how tough the stone is, water will always find a way to wear it down."Their journey wasn't easy; they began on opposite sides, but throughout their story, they healed each other's wounds and became the best of allies. I was captivated by the first episode when I happened to watch it on YouTube. Every day, I eagerly anticipated the new episodes. Now that it's finished, I can say it was worth the watch, and I've become a fan of Liu Yuning and Song Zuer. One of my favorite parts of this drama is the leads' acting. Liu Yuning's affectionate eyes make my heart melt all the time, while Song Zuer's crying scenes are some of the best I've seen. This drama isn't just about the forbidden love story of children from enemy families; it's about healing, forgiveness, giving second chances, and fostering understanding on both sides. I like that the political aspects were my biggest issue, and not the romance story, because I prefer romance to revenge or angst dramas. I loved this drama from beginning to end; it truly is one of the best I've ever watched.❤️💯

Masterpiece 10/10!!!
The Prisoner of Beauty is nothing short of a visual and emotional feast. Every frame is meticulously composed, with breathtaking cinematography that immerses you in its rich, almost dreamlike world. The costume design deserves special praise — intricate, elegant, and deeply symbolic, each outfit feels like a deliberate brushstroke on the show’s canvas. From opulent palace halls to delicate moments under moonlight, the visual storytelling is absolutely exquisite. The cast delivers some of the most compelling performances in recent drama history. Each actor fully inhabits their role, delivering layered, heartfelt portrayals that bring the characters’ inner lives to the surface. Their chemistry is palpable — quiet glances speak volumes, and even the silences feel heavy with meaning. It’s the kind of acting that doesn’t just entertain; it lingers in your mind long after the episode ends.
The music is the final thread that ties this masterpiece together. The score is haunting, sweeping, and perfectly timed, enhancing the emotional rhythm of the story without ever overwhelming it. Every element — from the powerful performances to the lush visuals and soul-stirring soundtrack — comes together in perfect harmony. The Prisoner of Beauty isn’t just a drama; it’s an experience. Bold, poetic, and unforgettable.

this is my first time watch LYN and SZE drama and I never expect it's really so great.
Finally i can watch a best chinese drama again after vacuum of chinese drama for a long time, actually I haven't watched Chinese dramas for a long time, not because I don't want to but because I don't find good dramas and often drop in the middle of the drama, but this drama really revives my spirit... this is really an interesting and great drama for meThis drama has an interesting storyline and good character development. starting from a hostile relationship then slowly developing into characters who love, respect, support and fight together to achieve a noble goal for the sake of peace and the welfare of the people
ML is depicted with an initial cold character and burdened by revenge for the killing of 3 generations of the Wei state but has a soft heart and loves his people very much, FL is depicted as a smart and wise woman. FL's sincere attention, affection and love can slowly finally dampen the fire of revenge in ML's heart all this time, not only that FL also makes a great contribution to the peace of the Wei state and the Qiao state.
Both of main leads have a great chemistry and You will be lulled and feel as if you are in the drama story.
LYN and SZE
LYN and SZE also have acting that I didn't expect to be so good and great.. all their expressions and feelings are really poured out well in their characters... not only the main leads, our 4 favorite generals, and almost all the supporting characters in this drama have really contributed greatly to the success of this drama...they are really amazing for this... besides that this drama also has a good cinematography effect with the drama OST that sings according to this drama....
I really thanks to the director, writer, main leads, all supporting characters and the crew who have given a solid performance and produced this quality and extraordinary drama..
rating 10/10 for this drama and I highly recommend it
and before I close my review, there is one statement from ML towards FL that really touched my heart "even if I succeed in taking revenge against my enemy (Qiao country) but if there is no you (ManMan) beside me anymore, then this life will feel meaningless and empty" and he chose to put his grudge in the past.Nice...

I fell for the plot faster than Wei Shao folded for Man Man
Wei Shao barks more than he chews, and let’s be honest — he lives for the drama. From the second he laid eyes on Man Man, he was done. Like, done-done. Sure, he kept mumbling about sending her home, but his soul had already packed up and moved in with her. That man folded faster than an origami swan. The show did a good job in giving the historical context. You could see he was completely bewitched by her, yet despite the evident attraction, he married her reluctantly, carrying grief, resentment, and about a decade’s worth of emotional repression.
Her beauty may have caught him, but what kept him was everything else — her wit, her love for the people, her strategic mind, the way she saw him when everyone else just needed him. Somewhere along the way, she became his safe place. She was the only person who didn’t drain him. She gave, too. So seeing him pretend not to be absolutely over the moon for every one of her attention, just to be caught red-handed in front of the mirror trying on the things she made for him... Sir. Please. You’re not fooling anyone.
He fell first, but she fell harder. Watching Man Man trying — softly, cleverly, and very strategically — to close that distance between them, while he remained blissfully unaware, was comedy gold. She was dropping hints, putting in real effort, and he was just standing there clueless. I was like ‘Sir? Read the room???’
What makes them work is their tacit understanding. Their non verbal communication is second to none. Qiao Man doesn’t just love him — she understands him. Knows when to hold back, when to act, when to push. And Wei Shao? For all his stubbornness, will stand up for her in a room full of knives.
Also, shoutout to the writers for not diluting her agency the second she got married. From day one, she was offering real solutions, negotiating for Yangzhou and playing the political game like she’d been doing it all her life.
And the chemistry? Even when they’re at odds, you can feel the tension simmering under every line. It’s sweet, it’s funny, it’s occasionally unhinged—and it works.
Oh—and their attendants? Agents of chaos. Meddling, noisy, hilarious. Every one of them is a supporting character worth their own spinoff.
Now, I have to scream about Liu Duan Duan as Wei Yan, Wei Shao’s cousin. My beloved second prince from Joy of Life is back, and he is acting with so much panache, it’s actually illegal. Every time he’s on screen, I’m either cracking up, side-eyeing everyone else, or just thrilled. He plays it with such flair — sharp, layered, funny without ever being cartoonish. He’s that last dash of spice that turns a great drama into a masterpiece. I’m obsessed. More of him in everything, please.
However, what's a complete miss is the duo of A’Fan and Bi Zhi. The second they show up, the energy in the room just evaporates. Like—who told the writers this subplot was giving? They walk in, and I’m suddenly hit with an overwhelming urge to do chores I’ve been putting off for weeks. Fold laundry. Stare into space. Literally anything else. It’s not even dislike — it’s that specific kind of boredom where you know you’re supposed to care, but your brain is just buffering like, “No thanks, I’ll pass.”

Cried, Screamed, Shipped It—Enemy-to-Lovers Done Right
I’m giving this drama a solid 9 out of 10 for the acting alone. The entire cast nailed their roles, and the storyline really pulled me in. But I won’t lie—losing one of my favorite supporting characters absolutely wrecked me. I cried through the whole episode. Why do they always take the good ones?? 😭Also, I did not see that twist with A'Fan coming… you know what I mean. And while I loved most of the pacing, I did catch myself zoning out a little when they got too deep into all the political talk and war planning.
The villains, though? Too good. So good that I genuinely wanted to punch the screen every time they appeared. That’s talent right there. 😂
The ending wasn’t super satisfying plot-wise, but at least everyone’s happy. Still, I really hope we get a Season 2! I’d love to see Ci become the lord of Yuanzhou, and I’m dying to know how Shiyuan’s love life turns out (give the girl some peace!). And honestly, I need to see A'Fan’s child grow up to become a badass general in Boya—manifesting that.
If you’re into enemy-to-lover tension, epic moments, and characters that get under your skin (in a good way), this drama is 100% worth watching.

Simply the best
From the very first five minutes, I was hooked. The plot, the characters, the acting—everything was executed so well. The 36 episodes flew by, and honestly, it wasn’t enough. What really impressed me was how nothing felt dragged out, which is incredibly rare for dramas with 30+ episodes. Every scene had purpose, and the pacing was tight from start to finish.I loved how straightforward the story was. The FL and ML got married early on, and they were completely honest about their intentions from the beginning. You’d think that having everything out in the open would kill the suspense, but it didn’t—if anything, it made the drama even more engaging. There was so much action, so many heartfelt and even humorous moments.
The camaraderie between the generals was one of my favorite elements. Despite Wei Shao marrying a Qiao, his men remained fiercely loyal to him—and their respect extended to Lady Wei as well. That quiet, unshakable loyalty added a layer of depth and emotion that hit hard. And when Wei Liang died, it was heartbreaking. But the moment that truly wrecked me was when Wei Qu found his body and vowed to bring him home, no matter the cost. That scene will stay with me for a long time.
Why not a perfect 10? The ending, while satisfying in many ways, felt rushed. I would’ve loved to see Lady Wei’s reaction upon learning her cousin had passed. It also would’ve been deeply moving to see the people of Wei welcome their Lord home—and to witness a final, emotional reunion between Wei Shao and his cousin, honoring his sacrifice.
And yes, I was hoping for one last glimpse into Lady Wei’s life—perhaps a second child, just like in the book—so her husband could finally be there for the birth and witness that joy firsthand.
Still, even with those minor shortcomings, The Prisoner of Beauty is an exceptional drama. It reignited my love for historical series and left me craving more. If this is the standard C-dramas are setting now, I’m all in.

The prisoner of beauty is a feast for the eyes and the heart!
This drama definitely deserve it's success and recognition.. I love the flow of the story how it goes from enemies to lovers. Li Yuning is so good acting in historical drama and Zuer is also a very good actress and the chemistry is just top notch. I really like the characters not only the main characters are interesting but also all the side characters specially the generals.Their enemies-to-lovers journey crackles with palpable tension - fueled by Liu Yuning's brooding intensity and scorching gaze perfectly countering Song Zu'er's luminous resilience and quiet strength. While the arranged-marriage trope feels familiar, the execution is masterful. Lavish production design immerses viewers in opulent sets and breathtaking costumes, while the nuanced script balances political intrigue with genuine emotional stakes.
A rare gem in web dramas, The drama marries grand scale with psychological intimacy, offering layered performances and themes of cyclical violence that linger long after viewing. Every frame feels deliberate, cementing its status as a standout in historical storytelling

10/10 - A Mesmerizing Masterpiece!
The Prisoner of Beauty is nothing short of breathtaking. From the very first episode, I was completely hooked. This drama blends emotional depth, suspense, and stunning visuals in a way that few dramas manage to do so flawlessly. The storyline is a perfect mix of romance, intrigue, and psychological tension. It's not just a love story—it's about identity, freedom, and the painful choices we make when trapped by circumstance. Every twist kept me on the edge of my seat, and I found myself rewatching scenes just to soak in the subtle brilliance of the dialogue and acting.
The chemistry between the leads is electrifying. Their emotional connection feels so raw and authentic that it lingers with you long after the episode ends. The lead actress brings such vulnerability and strength to her role, and the male lead—torn, complex, and heartbreakingly human—completely blew me away.
The cinematography? Absolutely stunning. Every frame feels like a painting. The color palette, the lighting, the symbolic imagery—they all elevate the drama to a whole new artistic level.
And the OST? Gorgeous. I still have the songs on repeat—they add so much atmosphere and emotional resonance to every scene.
If you're looking for a drama that isn't just entertaining but emotionally rich, gorgeously made, and utterly unforgettable, The Prisoner of Beauty is it. This drama didn’t just capture my attention—it captured my heart. ❤️
10/10. Would watch again and again.

Sincerity brings miracles..
I have no clue how to explain my current feelings right now. I'm on episode 32, and I can't believe this drama will end soon. This is one of the best Historical C-Drama I've ever watched. I've watched a lot of C-Dramas, particularly historical ones. I have always loved seeing Female Leads who can beat other people up using their martial arts, but this is definitely one of the rare cases where I loved the way a Female Lead can strategize her way out of danger.I stumbled on this drama thanks to one Instagram reel, and I saw Song Zu Er, looking so... darn cute. I decided to give this drama a go right there and then, and I can't believe how it went. I went into this drama, hoping to only see Song Zu Er's beauty, yet was hooked to the story. I know that the plot is simply enemies to lovers, but I can't explain how I felt when I slowly saw that their quarrels are starting to be flirt attempts.
The story is basically resolving family grudges, Wei Shao, played by Liu Yu Ning, is known as a fierce warrior with a vengeance. Wei Shao's grandfather made an alliance with the Qiao family, vowing to live and die together. Due to this alliance, Li Su, a general from Bianzhou (a rival family), attacked Xindu, a Wei State, aiming to break their alliance. When Wei needed their help, the Qiao's decided to retreat, leading to the deaths of Wei Shao's grandfather, father, and older brother. Wei Shao has sworn to kill Li Su and the entire Qiao family, and after reclaiming Xindu and killing Li Su, aims to finally set his target on the Qiao family. But the Qiao family, sent a marriage proposal, aiming to cease hostilities and restore peace between Qiao and Wei. But of course, the history of their betrayal has left a huge grudge that cannot be easily erased. Yet to gain forces and Panyi, a Qiao state located strategically in the middle of all the other clans, Wei Shao decided to marry her just to gain Panyi. Not knowing that their love story had just began.
Both Liu Yu Ning (Wei Shao) and Song Zu Er (Xiao Qiao) have given their all in order to portray their characters. I know that the story was somehow different (I read from someone's review), but I didn't know where since I didn't read the Web Novel (Zhe Yao, by Peng Lai Ke). All I can say is that of course the adaptations will not completely match the novels and sometimes instead change it to a completely different one, making it lose some important parts of the initial story. But I personally (speaking from someone who didn't read the Web Novel, I emphasize this segment once more) loved it, to bits. The story has a lot of serious, comedic, and romance moments. Even though their romance is slow-burn, it makes it that much rewarding to see... -> (episode 29 [18:27], episode 32 [28:40]).
How they both see each other changes due to their experiences with each other. Both of them are smart and think like each other, making their bond grow due to their way of approaching and solving a problem. Some misunderstandings cause them to grow apart, but grow even closer after resolving them. That's a normal "plot" for enemies to lovers, yet the way they solve them, and how they trust one another even when they "hate" each other, is so... alluring. Makes my skin crawl on some moments since they will sometimes drop a casual flirt here and there jokingly.
As for the side characters, they are doing their part as well, mostly in the comedic relieve moments. Most of them are likeable and memorable, since they have a close bond to the leads and have their own personalities. Especially when Wei Shao is contemplating his feelings towards Xiao Qiao and the generals and advisors are there to either be his sand bags, or just disappointed at how Wei Shao is so gullible at "love". As for the Villains, I only have one principle, if they successfully made us hate them, they have succeeded in fulfilling their role. Both Lady Yu Lou and Liu Yan have sad stories, making us pity them, but we have to remember that they made their own choices, and of course have to take the consequences of doing them.
In the span of 2 years (last 10/10 was given to Twinkling Watermelon, a K-Drama), I have not given another drama another 10/10 (not that my rating matters). I have watched a lot of dramas, and I will say that this drama is the one that is worthy of another 10/10. I gave this drama a 10/10 because of how it made me feel when watching it. I can't describe it with words nor with actions. But I highly recommend you to watch it if you like Historical C-Dramas. That's all for my review, I will end it with a quote from the drama.
Edited my rating to 9.5/10, just because... I don't really like how the story goes nearing the end (this is my personal opinion).
"Even if peace lasts only for a moment, a sincere heart can make it echo for generations."

SO FAR THE BEST COSTUME DRAMA OF 2025
the main issues costume romance/political dramas have is that they fail to balance out the two genres, one always outweighs the other. but prisoner of beauty somehow created that balance where we were able to get enough political information and still witness the romance between xiao man and wei shao. the villains successfully made me hate them. welldone!thumbs up to the entire cast and crew, enemies to lovers done well 10/10.
