The Prisoner of Beauty

I genuinely enjoyed watching Prisoner of Beauty and made it a point to tune in daily as each new episode aired. The series had its fair share of misunderstandings, which at times felt a bit overwhelming, but the engaging storyline and compelling performances kept me invested throughout.

What truly stood out for me was the female lead (FL). It was refreshing to see such a smart, capable character take center stage. Her intelligence and calm in tough situations added depth to the drama, offering a nice change from the usual tropes. She was definitely the smartest character in the series, and it made the plot even more enjoyable.

As for the male lead (ML), his performance was outstanding as always. He brings a consistent level of quality and emotion to every role he takes on, and this drama was no exception. I’ll continue to watch anything he stars in because he never disappoints.

The drama struck a great balance between humor and heartfelt emotion. There were plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, but it also didn’t shy away from touching on more emotional themes, which added layers to the overall story. The supporting cast also delivered strong performances, making the world of the drama feel complete and vibrant.

I'm definitely looking forward to Liu Yu Ning’s next project. If you’re looking for a drama that blends comedy, drama, and clever storytelling with a standout cast, Prisoner of Beauty is highly recommended.

MUST WATCH. BEST COSTUME DRAMA I'VE WATCHED SO FAR

I regularly watch c-dramas and I was just bored and clicked on the on-going ones-- and that's the best thing I did. From the first episode to the last episode it's so good, I looked forward to new episodes everyday. For their chemistry, it was the best. Enemies to lovers trope and why they are actually enemies makes sense. I was hooked as soon as they met. They complement each other so much that I feel their emotions with just them looking at each other. Did not fail with the micro expressions. Their love isn't something that happened instantly-- it was just right. Grudge cannot be solved overnight. They got together after the challenges and learned that whenever they have conflicts, they have to talk and understand each other.

Starting off with Xiao Qiao, the way her character is intelligent, not afraid to stand up for not just her own, but for the people she loves and protects is just amazing. I am not that familiar with Zuer and I discovered her through this drama, she embodied the character so well. Her eye acting is captivating .
Wei Shao is truly well-written. Liu Yuning embodied Wei Shao so well. He was betrayed but is not narrow minded-- he cares for the people and learned to let go of his hatred. He is someone who can be really scary but at the same time, be rational. I truly admire his character development.
The Qiao and Wei clan has really good characters. I admire Wei Grandmother because she was the bridge for ShaoMan, and considering she was one of the ones who were left in the clan, she still want WS to learn how to let go. The Wei generals may look like savages, but has warm hearts. For the Qiaos, Ci is great. If Xiao Qiao has the heart for the people, Da Qiao only has her heart for her love. I have to admit I was annoyed with her midway but honestly, she just loved. She admitted that she was not great herself but I admire her for what she did later and for sticking to her principle. General Wei Liang and Xiao Tao's love story also left a mark on my heart. I actually love how good Lady Yu Lou as a villian because I was irritated by her acting so much it's so effective. Liu Yan is just plain stupid and reckless.
I love the ost that is sung by Liu Yuning himself. Will I rewatch it again? YES! I actually rewatched it while it was still ongoing. The cinematography is top notch. I rarely get attached into the drama and it is the first time I really enjoyed every single bit of it. I really hope that the leads could be in a drama again in the future.

The Prisoner of Beauty – A Journey of Healing and Growth

The Prisoner of Beauty may seem like a typical romance or political drama, but for me, it’s more about personal growth and emotional healing. The story revolves around two people with very different childhoods, and how love and emotional safety can transform them.

The male lead (ML) starts his journey consumed by hatred and the scars of a traumatic past. However, his relationship with the female lead (FL), who was raised in a loving and supportive family, becomes the catalyst for his growth. She is kind, grounded, and emotionally intelligent, much like her father. Through her strength and compassion, the ML begins to heal and face his past. Their relationship is one of the most satisfying arcs, not because of romance or drama, but because it feels earned and real.

The contrast between the FL and her female cousin presents an interesting dynamic: some people are driven by a desire to protect others, while others want a simple, peaceful life. The show doesn’t judge these choices but rather explores them in a nuanced way.

The cinematography is beautiful, the direction is sharp, and the acting is stellar. The OST perfectly complements the emotional weight of key moments, while the fight scenes, tragedies, and moments of happiness keep the pacing engaging. One of the show's strongest points is its complexity— everyone’s choices are influenced by their past and circumstances.

The female antagonist, who endured her own traumatic childhood, embarks on a self-destructive path, in stark contrast to the ML’s healing journey. It’s a poignant reminder of how different people cope with pain.

In the end, The Prisoner of Beauty is about breaking generational cycles, finding emotional safety, and becoming a better person—not alone, but through meaningful connections. It’s a show with great rewatch value, and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys slow-burn character development and emotional depth.

One of the best drama in 2025

Honest opinion, I really enjoy this drama. Sure the ending was VERY rush but in the end it was a happy ending. ML and FL along with the rest of the other cast did a wonderful job. Each portrayed their role beautifully. I must say my favorite character throughout this drama is Wei Liang. I was sad towards the end but, at the same time, I was satisfied with what the director has given his audience. This is one of the many dramas I've seen that is good. I highly recommend this drama.

A watered down story.

I would say up until episode 9, the story was accumulating to be a good one. Each actors played their part well. But when I thought it can satisfy my expectation even more, it disappointed me instead.

I was expecting a greater exploration towards the ties between political tension and personal vendetta between our main leads. A detail that should've created more depth in their character growths and human emotions for each other. But all depth has gone shallow when the story took the direction of just letting "fluffy" romance to take over. Don't get me wrong I do not detest such romance but in a plot that is introduced contrast to that, I can't help but feel a bit shortchanged.

The initial setup hinted at something much richer—conflicted loyalties, generational trauma, and the murky line between duty and desire. There were moments, especially in episodes 6 through 9, where it truly felt like the drama was threading a needle between intimate storytelling and broader political intrigue. But instead of pushing further into those emotionally charged, morally gray areas, it took the safer route: romantic tropes that felt unearned and, frankly, tone-breaking.

This shift didn’t just simplify the narrative—it diluted the complexity that had been carefully building. Characters who were once driven by layered motivations suddenly became mouthpieces for sweet nothings. Their choices started to feel less like the result of internal struggle and more like convenient pivots to make space for longing gazes and saccharine scenes. It made the stakes feel lower, like everything that had been simmering just evaporated.

There was real potential for "The Prisoner of Beauty" to be more than a romance set against a political backdrop. Instead, what we got felt more like a retreat than a culmination.

In the end, it’s not that the romance shouldn’t have been there—it’s that it took over at the expense of everything else. And in doing so, it turned a story that could’ve been powerful into something merely pretty.

Addicted to Prisoner of Beauty.

I am in love with the actors and the characters, beautifully written and acted out. For me this is the first, I am also loving the direction, they have focused on minute details, the gestures, the way Manman lights up me in Wei Shao walks into the room. The way he subtlety brags about her care.

I am really enjoying the show and would definitely recommend watching this show.

Best drama of the year!

I have waited too long to watch this drama, but so glad that I finally did. The storyline is really interesing, the castings delivered outstanding performance. The first 2 episodes are quite rocky, but if you can survive them then the it starts to picking up pace. The bromance is also funny. Really worth my time to watch and maybe re-watch!

A Beautiful Masterpiece

I had been in a slump for over 2 years because i couldn't find a good c-drama according to my taste. This year i suddenly came across this drama and started watching this because of Song Zu Er. I never write any review for any dramas but this drama had me writing for it. The starting, and romance , the plot , the comedy everything was perfect till the end. It would've been nice if Wei Liang did't die at the end but well........i think it was bound to happen. This was one of the true enemies to lovers where there relationship really took time to form based on mutual trust and feelings for each other, not like other where they become lovers suddenly. I really, really love this drama and would watch this again and again.

As A Couple Should Be!

I was fortunate enough to not have to wait 2 or 3 years for this drama to release due to the delay. I don't know what my expectations would have been due to the anticipation so this is my review based on watching an unexpected drama a few days after it was released.

What made me decide to watch this drama?

A tiktok edit of when the two leads met each other the first time. I was hooked.

Was the plot good?

Let's get the obvious fact out of the way. So the leads' clans became enemies and we all understand this is an enemies to lovers trope drama and we all expected them to fall for each other no doubt. Cliche but we all wanted it right? What I truly like about it was how the relationship of the couple grew and they built trust over time and not over night or within a few days. It took them a whole freaking year to 101% trust each other gradually. This to me represents reality. If it was any quicker, it wouldn't be so enjoyable for me as much since it may have seemed rushed just to please fans. The overall plot may be predictable for most but it was a great journey.

My beloved 2nd couple:

When life happens, not everything goes your way all the time. I'm sad about Wei Liang's death but I'm also glad that Xiaotao has his brothers their for her support - lifelong. Like I said, life happens but that doesn't make you stop loving people.

Was the HE rushed?

I think it was okay. Not brilliantly great but not bad either. It was just enough. Usually cdramas cram in happiness in the last 5 mins of a baby being born etc and all that but the only thing stopping me giving it a full 10 stars is I wanted to see Wei Shao's reaction on meeting his baby for the first time and possibly an extra scene or two with the new family of three.

Overall thoughts:

I give 9.5 stars to this beautiful drama telling a story of growth and trust between a couple - loyalty, faith and love are great contributions towards peace. Some characters definitely deserved to die and they did. Some deserved to live as a worse punishment than death but unfortunately that didn't happen. Some didn't deserve what happened to them at all and some did their most to maintain relationships as best as they could.

Life is a rollercoaster.

Give this drama a chance but be prepared with a box of tissues for the last few episodes.

Great beginning but falls off later.

I want to get to the good before the bad. The cast for ML and FL was great. They had such amazing chemistry and their acting was on point. The first 10 episodes had me in a choke hold. The hate, angst, and attraction was so yummy. I adore friendships and this drama had a really funny bromance between 4 (5 if including ML). I love their interactions and they mesh well with each other. I also really like the maid and the soldier relationship (😭). I love it when the ML isn't a spineless mama's-boy. I do like that they both standup for each other. I am just so used to the ML caving in and not doing shit when the FL is obviously being set-up.

What I didn't like was everything else. The reason this fell off so much for me, was that the political parts and villains were such a bore. It feels like nothing was happening in that aspect. Meanwhile, the romance department was flourishing. I thought the random ass one-sided love triangle with the cousin was a waste of time. It doesn't add any value to the story or plot. There was no chemistry between FL and the cousin. They didn't have a lot of moments together so I don't get how he was in love with her.... The side characters (not including the cousin) was so... meh? like omg they did absolutely nothing for me.

Would I rewatch this again? Yes and no. I think I would would the beginning again if I am craving for enemies to lover. But I will absolutely not finish it again. I will watch MV or clips once in a while LOL. My rating is between a 7 or an 8. The acting and chemistry between the leads was banging. The leads carried this drama. I would have dropped this around 25-30 episodes in because everything else was not keeping my attention. Honestly, if the actors was different, I would have rated this 5 or below.
