I can see what all the hype is about, but...
Should you try it, I'd say yes. Chinese dramas, especially historicals, are absolutely not my favorites, save a couple of exceptions. I liked this one well enough, but I didn't love it. Please remember that this is my personal opinion. The good:
Gorgeous lead couple.
Excellent enemies to lovers, with a slow progression as they get to know one another.
A strong female lead that remains strong throughout. She had a sharp mind, was kind, and stood her ground.
Cute side love story.
Beautifully filmed.
Costuming and the sets were good.
Happy ending.
My issues:
FL reminded me so much of Zhao Lusi without her charisma. I kept waiting for more wit from her.
Why do people have to have multiple names? Keeping everyone straight was a nightmare for me!
Entirely too long, with long periods of nothing happening. I had to FF too much.
I can't forgive them killing off my favorite character.
Boring, abrupt and lazy ending.

Great start. I was able to grasp the story easily from the beginning. The romance was good, and the lighthearted humor, while out of place sometime was very fun to watch. The main story was quite good at first. At times the sub stories don't make sense, but you kind of overlook it because it's still enjoyable. If it kept this pace and quality the entire 36 episodes id give it an 8/10 or even 9/10. The only issue is something changes in the last 10 episodes or so. Making me wish i stopped sooner, and just made up an ending in my head. Characters dying for no reason. Terrible choreography. Terrible decision making capabilities by some of the characters, like are they 5 years old? Entire songs playing multiple times in one episode with slow motion, im guessing the budget was running out. There was more story i wanted to see, but we got a bunch of middle schooler level drama instead. Even a new born baby completely forgotten? Did it die? Does this superhuman man really just have 2 brain cells, one for loving wife, one for lifting rock. Holy shit you have a kid now man. Its like the author had a sudden realization that NO. ONLY the lead romance is allowed to exist EVERYONE ELSE DIE. and went on a rampage to avenge romeo and juliets angry spirits.
If you dont mind terrible endings go ahead and watch. I dont see how people can sit here and lie to themselves rating a 10 on this dumpster fire. Watch more good shows.

Had great potential but failed through and through due to some aspects
Prisoner of beauty has beautiful sets, outfits, accessorises, actors and scenery. The plotline is nothing out of ordinary but had some intresting aspects that kept me watching like the fun side charecters, comedic aspects, bromance and sismance. The grandmother highkey saved the show along with cousin bro , loved the army too!! The music was well timed. The problem lies with the ABSOLUTE SHIT screenwriting and dialogues especially for the male lead. In a feminist lens especially in 2025, the male lead is a disgrace. He CONSISTENTLY looks down on her saying shes "just a woman" even though she technically saved his life. he gossips about her in such disgraceful ways. And never accepts that shes clever and capable and not just a woman. He has mood swings SO MUCH. Playing with her feelings and her trust. If soemthing goes wrong and might have been from her he drops his trust and then treats her like shit. What pisses me off even more is the fact that she agrees with his shitty perspectives, excuses his bad behaviour and pretends like nothing happened. I understand they want to keep the slice of the society but this was just blatant and it didnt need to come from the male leads mouth!!! Atleast idealism in tv shows especially a fluffy one like this one would have been good. this phase lasts for more than half of the show and it highkey pissed me off. The way he gets jealous of men that breathe in her direction and the whole cousin plot RUINED IT LIKE BE FR :((((((( His jealously and how cooly she takes it make me wanna cry because aint no way.
Another thing is the villian is CONSISTENTLY one woman the dragging of her revenge line is too much - so many things could have happened in the story but no. the episodes could have been cut because last 3 episodes i watched by forwarding like crazy.
Overall, i wouldnt recommend, there are so many better shows.

All the guys on the antagonist's side were green flags?
The show was great. The antagonist was...wow. She kept on thinking she was the victim, but all the guys around her were so good to her!!! That was the saddest part; she never realized until the end. They all left a way out for her but she wouldn't take it. 😤 The male lead's brother, the husband, and the guy who was infatuated with her all wanted to save and protect her when when they were about to die. And then she went and killed the guard guy 3 sent to protect her. 😭😭😭Was this review helpful to you?
Forgive, Never Forget. Love and Honour.
A romantic action thriller tale of betrayal, nefarious plots and ultimately triumph of love.Superb characterisation by ML, FL and main supportings. There will be many new acolytes of Song Zu Er just for her beautiful expressions even without considering her fabulous acting. One can literally watch the series just to see her. Usually the ML struts and poses without much acting but LYN showcased his emotional side here well. If the ML and FL set the drama tone, the supporting were the garnishings that lifted this CDRAMA to another level. You can't help but root for Wei Liang and Xiao Tao.
The pace started fast and furious. By Episode 3 one is left wondering what is there left of the story line? Then the subterfuge and scheming starts, within the family and within states, each twist and turn leads one to binge the next episode for the outcome. Both ML and FL literally lived their characters.
Great cinematography and this is one series where the OST is worth listening to for every episode instead skipping forward.

A Healthy Portrayal of Enemies To Lovers
This drama had a nice, healthy relationship portrayal of the Enemies to Lovers trope. I felt the character of Wei Shao was toned down a bit too much from the novel, almost making his character a bit unrealistic. The drama version was a lot better, though I felt the writers toned down the novel's dark vibes a bit too much. But still, the casting, visuals, and OST were great. I loved that the leads had a respectful and healthy relationship. They always talked things out between themselves. It was a very nice change. The cinematography was gorgeous. The costume and makeup of the female lead were top-notch. Song Zu Er was looking so gorgeous that I could hardly take my eyes off her. I enjoyed watching this drama. Was this review helpful to you?
A Lynx of a Drama
Loved the story and character arcs. The leads’ fiery banters are highly entertaining. Watched it twice already, and I’m still laughing at all the weasel-lynx scenes. Loved every time Wei Shao admitted he couldn’t out-talk Xiao Qiao—equal parts boldly self-assured and sexy. Also loved how seamlessly the show fuses comedic moments with the heavier, emotional scenes. Was this review helpful to you?

Two Hearts, One Current
The Prisoner of Beauty is a historical romance drama that slowly reveals itself as more than a story of political marriage, it is a narrative about fractured trust, inherited guilt, and the long process of rebuilding a shared future through something as simple, yet symbolic, as a canal. At its core, the drama thrives on the relationship between its two leads. The male lead begins as emotionally restrained, shaped by loss and a deep-seated belief in betrayal, while the female lead embodies calmness and clarity, moving through conflict with quiet intelligence. Their dynamic is not driven by constant conflict or melodrama, but by gradual understanding, a push and pull much like water shaped by wind, and wind softened by water.
The political backdrop of the clans provides the structure for the story, though it is not always the most emotionally gripping element. Instead, it functions as the soil in which the central relationship grows. Betrayals, shifting alliances, and manipulation drive the plot forward, but they rarely overshadow the emotional evolution of the main couple.
The canal stands as the most powerful symbol in the entire drama. Once an unfinished promise torn apart by war and misunderstanding, it slowly transforms into a living metaphor for reconciliation. What begins as a fractured construction project between two clans eventually becomes a bridge, not only of water and trade, but of memory, forgiveness, and shared survival.
Emotionally, the drama does not rely on a single overwhelming peak, but rather on a steady accumulation of meaningful moments. Some deaths and losses add weight to the narrative, but the strongest impact comes from the slow erosion of hatred rather than explosive tragedy. This makes the experience more reflective than devastating.
Ultimately, The Prisoner of Beauty is not a story that leaves a permanent emotional wound, but rather one that lingers gently, like water flowing through stone over time. It is a drama about learning that peace is not the absence of history, but the decision to build something new upon it.
A solid, well-crafted, and thematically cohesive series, even if it never fully reaches emotional intensity at its peak.

Wonderful!!!
I was not expecting too much from this drama but because I love the main male actor, I decided to give it a try. It has been weeks since a drama/comedy has interested me. So, I started with episode one and was intrigued enought to continue. I just finished the last episode.I loved it!!!! The story line, the scenery, the music and the actors are all terrific.
Prisoner of beauty is 5 stars.

Surprisingly Captivating
This drama caught me off guard. I didn’t even realize that I was binging. I was more than halfway through it before I even realized that I was watching the episodes one after the other. The surprising part is, until the very end, nothing cataclysmic happens. There are no twists, no sudden surprises (or shocks). It’s almost like watching people live their lives. I understand the frustration some people had as this drama is not action packed with flaring robes and gravity defying jumps. But even then it grabbed my interest like a marching band. For this review, when I started to think about what all had happened in the drama, I realized that it was nothing much. But then why did I liked this as much as I did?!
The answer is lead characters. The FL, Lady Gao, was one of the most capable female leads I have seen recently. She is compassionate but not a push over. She is young but not naive. She understands the other side’s perspective, has enough empathy. But that does not blind her to the interest of her family. She is a badass, but not in a bratty, tantrumy, sarcastic way. She sees through people and situations, takes time to understand everything and then finds a way of the least resistance, like water - no pun intended. What I liked was how she meant it when she said she understands why her in-laws would hate her. And why her husband would keep her at an arm’s distance, she didn’t just say it, she showed it with her actions. But at the same time, she does not hesitate to tell her husband when she is displeased with his actions or when her foolish mother in law tries to undermine her marriage. The character was brilliant. She did what she wanted, got done what she wanted, but was not self absorbed.
And then our ML. OMG. Lord Wei is a total teddy bear. He is so patient with her, yet so petty when he is jealous. Even when he seems spellbound by her beauty, he does not devolve into an alpha hole who is cruel because he can’t face his emotions. He is not a man-child. He has a solid, like pretty solid, reason to be wanting to eradicate FL’s clan. But he also is emphatic enough to understand her predicament. It’s a one sided enemy-to-lovers drama. She never thinks he is her enemy. His enmity lasts just long enough. It doesn’t drag. Most of the drama is them developing their mutual understanding and finding love. A really good job by both the actors.
I loved the ML’s gang. The four musketeers and the advisor were just cracking funny. Their loyalty was strong enough to allow them to keep their personal hatred aside and accept her Ladyship because their Lord accepts her. I loved it. There is usual humour which is sometimes unfunny. But at least for me, it did not grate. There are usual grey characters, usual black characters, usual white characters, villains with a boohoo stories I did not care about. Oh, my mommy and daddy didn’t love me, so let me be a psychotic social climber or a family-killer. Like dudes, get over it. Don’t justify your nastiness with some sob story. At least own it.
My one gripe was with the climax. It came out of nowhere and escalated from 0 to 100 in no time. It was like the studio told the team to create some drama and then cut their budget. No spoilers but some deaths in the end did not make sense. They did not fit organically. It was more like the writers were ticking boxes for the studio who were like, why should everybody be happy, let’s kill off a few to jerk some tears. And that’s the reason of my imperfect rating. Senseless sadness for the sake of it.

Schemes, Strength, and Slow-Burn Love — The Prisoner of Beauty Has It All
I absolutely loved the lead pair in this drama. The male lead is effortlessly charming, calm, composed, and quietly magnetic, while the female lead is delightfully devious, with an incredibly expressive face. (Though I don’t know why, her lips and smile kept reminding me of Aneet Padda from Saiyyara.) Both actors delivered top-notch performances that really brought the story to life. The pacing was near perfect, the story never dragged, and I ended up binge-watching the entire series in just four days. I genuinely loved how the plot unfolded, though I have to admit, I couldn’t bring myself to watch the last few episodes. Knowing that one of the main characters would die made it too heartbreaking for me to continue.
As for the side characters and couples, they didn’t take up so much screen time that it became overwhelming or distracting from the main story, though I’ll admit, I still skipped a few of their parts just to get back to the leads. The playful banter between the main couple was easily one of my favorite aspects, the way the male lead tried to hide his growing affection, while the female lead caught on every time with that knowing little smile… it was just so heartwarming and therapeutic to watch.
Another thing I really appreciated was how they both stood up for each other throughout the series. Despite the plot being ripe for misunderstandings, the story avoided unnecessary drama by emphasizing trust and communication. Yes, there were a few misunderstandings, but they were resolved beautifully and naturally.
And I have to say, the female lead was incredible. Strong, intelligent, and deeply involved in the kingdom’s affairs, she wasn’t one of those scatterbrained heroines who let the male lead shoulder everything. She had agency, purpose, and conviction, and I always love when female leads are driven by character, not just beauty.

Melt your heart enemies to lovers romance
I am in love with this historical romance drama. I love a good slow burn done right. And I’ve realized enemies to lovers might be my favorite romance trope.I thought the ml’s acting skills were superb. He was dense, clueless and innocent when needed, warlord when needed, and sensitive romantic partner. He portrayed all of these roles well. Plus he’s super nice to look at.
The only reason I didn’t give it the full 10 is because in the first half there were a lot of slow parts that I thought could have used some more action. And while the action came towards the end I felt a bit bored with the villains. It was the same song and dance with them and I thought it was drawn out.
All In all though this is DEFINITELY worth watching in my opinion.
