It’s good, but that depends on what you’re looking for…

In 10/10 shows, every character has an ending (a closure) and it’s always a Good one. A good ending doesn’t mean Happy ending for the character: a good ending/closure can be epic, happy, bittersweet, or tragic, but it’s never rushed or anti-climactic.

Well, that being said, this drama is :

A 10/10 if : you mainly focus on the lead couple. You like arranged marriage plot with no divorce, no amnesia, no fake death, no stupid separation. You’re not fond of love triangle, love when arguments don’t drag on and are quickly addressed. Not only that, but you’re in awe when the leads gradually grew closer and more intimate as time and conflicts pass. They don’t do the very cliché tango : one step forward, three steps backs. You can clearly see it, as well as the side characters (from the maids to the antagonists). Once they confess to each others, the FL’s brain doesn’t shrink, and she doesn’t become a damsel in distress ; the ML doesn’t forget about his status as a ruler, past friendships or grudges to only advocate for the FL (and by extension her clan) yet he never really makes things difficult for her. The chemistry is on fire, the intimacy over the top: nobody plays coy here. It’s a good HE for them.

A 9/10 if : you’re into all the above, and you also care about the leads’ close aides (maids, advisors, generals, family members). They must fit their role, be well-written and developed. If they are used as a comedy relief, their intervention must ease the conflict. You like when those characters have their own life, hobbies, and personalities (strengths and fears). They are their own and nobody property. They are loyal, but not to the point of obsession. Furthermore, they call out the leads, give them another perspective, and help them grow. You’re happy if those characters have a decent ending.

A 8/10 if you’re into all the above BUT want the leads’ close aides to have a good ending. For example, you don’t like when a character that plays a key role in the general plot ; in the leads’ relationship and in final battle not to be shown his full rise to lordship or how good he was in the battlefront. (I will keep it at that so not to give you spoilers).

A 7/10 for all the above AND you think that villains, especially main villains, shouldn’t be subpar. For you, good villains are as essential to the plot as the leads, and you can’t stand when the script purposely sabotages the villains just to make the MLs shine (here mainly the FL). You like when the villains' story is properly told, you want to see them struggle, lose some and win some, thus becoming wiser and deadlier. If the villains are put together, you want to see how they went from : “let’s form on alliance of interest” to “I admire what you did here” to “I think I’m falling for you”. Good villains force the leads to step up their game. Bad villains are just stepping stones.

A 6/10 if you can’t stand when the script not only sabotage the villains but also their close aides. You hate when, for the leads' sake (mainly the FL again), a villain relative is forced by the script to act contrary to his heart. Or, you hate when plot armor is conveniently used in favour of the leads’ relative (mainly the FL) when clearly without it, the villain relative has the edge on a one on one fight. Here, when the villains have good advisors, their advices are seldom taking into account or the advisor is described as a caricature.

However, it’s a 5/10 or less if you expect a Nirvana In Fire or Secret of Three Kingdoms. Unfortunately, the political aspect is but a background noise that suddenly become louder at the last 6 episodes. The show browses on the financial, political, and military cost of the ML initiatives. The dynamics between the different clans are glossed over. The FL position as lady Wei is never truly challenge, she’s very much shield by the ML and his Grandmother from the get-go, as a result, her schemes just make her appear vile…

There is much more to say, but I’ll stop here. For me, it’s a solid 7,5/10 drama. If the premise was the same a Destined, it will be a 10/10. Like many comments point out TPoB is a romance with a political subplot, however Sound of the Desert it’s a better rendition of a sly FL pits against a manipulative villainess.

Interesting Begin and predictable Ending

Ok I really loved how this Drama started. I watched it mainly because of Liu Yu Ning and he saved many scenes where the female actress failed to deliver. The costumes, designs, plot and cast were overall really nice. FL Xiao Qiao role was interesting in the beginning of the story, I was expecting her to be mischievous, calculating and even backstabbing but after she went to Wei she acted as boring housewife, the scenes where she was trying to act as 5 year old girl Infront of the lord were not helping at all. This kind of made their entire romantic relationship flat & boring. Literary every other character like the peony unibrow lady, the half brother Wei Yan or the fat couple were fare more interesting and entertaining than the main leads. I thought the story will end with the last two major battles where the Wei lord dies to the north and his half brother Wei Yan wins by defending the capital, then moves north , unites the land and take care of his brother wife and new born. Would have been a twist but they went the most generic boring way with minimal side characters sacrifices.
Comparing this to other master class historical (costume) dramas like "Love of like a Galaxy", "Story of Kunning Palace" it simply doesn't deserve above 9.

This show was a pretty good watch. I ultimately settled on an 8.5 for 3 reasons, 1) the characters were strong in this story but 2) they didn’t delve more into some of the more interesting characters and gave more screen time to the less interesting. For instance, the Wei generals should have been given more screen time and backstories. 2 of them, Wei Liang and Wei Qu had more banter but it was still surface level. Wei Xiao and Wei Duo became paperweights. They were always there but didn’t have much impact. Lady Yu Lou had too much screen time and became redundant after a while. 3) there was a good portion of the drama that almost seemed to lose focus of the bigger plot, or rather it started to focus on more menial things like Wei Shao and his jealousy or their random trust issues. These were lowlights for me because it stalled the larger story out.

Good

-strong plot
-strong acting
-interesting characters
-production value
- OST

Bad

-characters with no backstories
-plot lost focus
-redundant characters
-love story was lacking at times (great kiss scenes though)

One of the best historical chinese Dramas so far

I rarely write Reviews, actually, never on this App. but for this I must! I have watched so many Chinese dramas, and historical ones were always so icky for me. I never liked how they flew around and and were suddenly air bending, I know this is mostly wuxia, but still.

But this one. Oh man. I can't even start on how much I love this drama. The acting the relationships, wether it's the main couples, the friends, the family. The story is so well written.
many people can't wait for two episodes, I want them to only share one a day so this drama can stay for longer. I'm sad already knowing its over in not even 10 days :(.

Now let's talk about how smart our fl is. I HATE fls that are stupid, high voices and cant think straight. Even when she's being the "weaker" one it's her being and understanding human being cause goddamn there were moments I would have been so damn petty but she was more wise on the other hand. that's what I loved about her. She was mad and understanding at the right moments!

This is such a nice change! I am actively looking for more Chinese dramas just cause this one changed my mind about them. normally I drop them the moment I hear fl high voice, no fr why do they always make fl voices like this?

Thats besides the point. Definitely watch this. this is worth every second.

A Promising Start Lost in Slow Pacing and Emotional Flatness

I'm currently on episode 20, and honestly, it's been a disappointment so far. The drama has some decent moments, but nothing really impressive. I went in expecting a serious political story with real tension and high stakes, but instead it feels more like a historical slice-of-life that doesn't really go anywhere. The pacing is extremely draggy, with many scenes stretched out far longer than necessary, making the story feel slow and repetitive. The directing and staging don't help either, as a lot of scenes lack energy, tension, or impact. Despite having a sociopolitical backdrop, the overall tone is surprisingly light and comedic, which makes it hard for me to get fully immersed.

The action scenes also lack any real suspense or sense of danger. A lot of sequences spend too much time on minor details, which further slows the pacing down. Visually, nothing has really left an impression on me either. There aren't any particularly memorable shots, and the cinematography feels pretty standard throughout. I honestly think the drama would have benefited from tighter pacing or fewer episodes.

Episodes 1–12 were actually quite promising, but after that the plot became very predictable. The series leans much more into comedy than serious storytelling, which made it harder for me to stay invested.

The characters are another issue for me. A lot of them feel strangely shallow, as if they're all attending the same summer camp rather than living in a royal court. They rarely convey much emotional depth, and even the emperor feels oddly casual with his soldiers. There's almost no sense of hierarchy, protocol, or professional distance, which makes many interactions feel superficial and less believable.

As for the romance, it hasn't worked for me either. The leads barely spend time together, and the few scenes they do share feel rushed and underdeveloped. Twenty episodes in, the relationship has barely progressed, and I just don't feel any chemistry, spark, or butterflies when they're on screen together. What makes it even more frustrating is that it feels like we're watching the same conversations and the same moments play out over and over again, without any meaningful development or change in their dynamic.

My biggest complaint, though, is probably the tagging. Based on the tags, I expected a serious political drama. In reality, "comedy" and "slice of life" would be much more accurate descriptions. Better tagging would help set expectations properly because, personally, I felt a bit misled.

For now, I'm putting the drama on hold. I haven't decided whether I'll continue or drop it completely, but at this point I'd probably give it a 6.7/10.

Disappointing, “The Prisoner of Beauty” fails to deliver beyond shallow romance and stale acting

I really tried to enjoy The Prisoner of Beauty, but honestly, it turned out to be one of the most childish drama I’ve watched in a while.
The storyline had so much potential at the beginning, but quickly became silly, repetitive, and full of immature conflicts. The plot relied too much on overused tropes like random jealousy, constant bickering, and unrealistic misunderstandings that felt more annoying than entertaining.
The political setup faded into the background and what was left was a shallow romance with forced drama.
A lot of the scenes made no sense and felt more like a fantasy written by teenagers than a well-developed historical drama. I kept watching hoping it would get better but it never did.
As for the cast, the only thing I genuinely liked was the female lead’s beauty, she’s stunning on screen and had a great presence. But even her acting couldn’t save the poor writing.
Liu Yuning as the male lead Wei Shao was a huge letdown. Once again, he plays the same cold, possessive, emotionally stunted character I’ve seen him do too many times before.
His performance felt flat and predictable with little emotional range or growth.
The character was immature, controlling and sometimes his face is unpleasant to watch.
It’s disappointing to see him stuck in this type of role again and again it feels like he’s not even trying to challenge himself at all.
And I’m quite surprised this drama has such a high rating on this site.

Its alright,nothing special

It was alright but a little slow. Im used to wuxia dramas with alot of martial arts and sword fighting and stuff so this ones a bit slow but I love Liu Yuning so ill watch the whole thing. The beggining and the ending episodes were great but the middle episodes were pretty slow. Also not to be mean but the female lead, while her acting is fine, her voice is so annoying, she talks like a baby and is so quiet even when shes mad and stuff its unrealistic,i wish she would talk in a normal voice not that baby voice. I personally would not add to me rewatch list, but hey i guess everything cant be a masterpiece. I give it a 7 out of 10 and thats a bit generous.

Another overrated nonsense drama

The Prisoner of Beauty is a shallow and unbalanced story that relies too heavily on surface-level romance. It focuses almost entirely on the female lead’s beauty and wit, reducing the plot to repeated scenes of admiration and flattery with little substance. The male lead, a supposed lord, lacks any real intelligence or strategic depth—especially in scenes involving war or politics.

While the female lead is clearly written to shine, her intelligence is exaggerated to the point where it overshadows everything else, and her performance comes off as overacting. The fight scenes are mediocre at best, with no real tension or clever strategy, making it hard to take any conflict seriously. A once-talented actress is trapped in a role that gives her little more to do than flaunt beauty and outsmart everyone with ease, leaving the entire drama feeling flat and one-dimensional.

The Prisoner of 'Inner' Beauty.

The name of the drama should have been "The Prisoner of Inner Beauty.". The leading couple were both good looking and physically attracted to each other. But it was their inner beauty, that is, their love for their people and their selflessness that won them over and endeared them to each other. This was what enabled their eventual love for and complete trust in one another.

The enemies to lovers troupe was very well done but the whole story itself, in terms of its essence and purpose, was not logical. Because the actual enemy of Wei State that caused the problem from the beginning was Bianzhou. Li Su was simply a general serving Bianzhou. Yanzhou betrayed Wei, but they were not the real cause of what happened to Wei, neither were they the ones who started the conflict. They were a victim just as Wei was, only that they failed to come to Wei's rescue.

Added to the above setback, the drama started off very strong, lost steam a little in the middle and looked like it was going to regain momentum towards ep 30, but plummeted from ep 33. It was interesting up to ep 32 and then poor and rushed to the end. The problem was not about the ending being happy or sad but about it being bad. It would have been better if the last 4 episodes were not included. They were unecessary, poorly written, and executed. The plots in those 4 episodes made no sense and made the main themes of the story pointless. Like doing 180 degrees on the themes. If you must include more episodes, then make sure they are good and they deliver a befitting climax.

I started to watch cdramas beginning of 2024 and have seen several, even some released as far back as 2019. In all the different genres, and including popular ones, only about two had really good and well executed endings. So, I have to agree with those who have said that cdrama writers, and content producers, do not know how to write good endings, especially for their period/historical dramas.

However, for this drama, the work done to create some complex characters and fully develop their arc, especially those of the leading couple and Wei Yan, was brilliant. The characters of the two main antagonists were weak, though. As if they were intentionally made to be dumb. In all, the actors and two directors did a fantastic job. They saved the day for the drama!

I enjoyed the comedy, too, with the bantering of the four generals of Wei Shao and his adviser. As well as the silly comedic exchanges between the leading couple. I don't think I can get past those hilarious statements like: "Shame on Wei Shao!"; "...Wei Shao, get up!, get up!! get up!!!"; and of course, "...my lord...why can't you say something nice...is your mouth on FIRE.".

As to the romance of the leading couple, it was engaging, and the chemistry between them was undeniably strong. If only they stayed true to it and didn't have to over milk it in ep32 to the point of it becoming too much acting. The way they portrayed the love they shared the first time they wanted to cunsummate their marriage was very real and believable as it revealed their vulnerability and sincerity. It was all about the two of them. But the second time, which was the actual consummation, fell short of these beautiful elements. Are they deeply in love with each other and want to express this for the first time just for the sake of having a child or children? So, will he stop loving her if she is unable to give him a child? The message here is flawed. Then added to this was the over acting, which almost started to feel like a perfume commercial. And oh, those statements just give the cringe, "...how about giving me a child...and I want it now..." He is being intimate with his beloved wife for the first time and what is on his mind is a child and not to simply please her, still?

Though Wei Shao later told his mother that children come by fate. But this only contradicts what he was asking for, as an expression of love, the first time he was going to be physically intimate with his wife whom he loves so much. This contradiction which occured in the next episode is just another one of the reasons why the last 4 episodes were unnecessary. What would have been more realistic was for the consummation of their marriage to have happened at the inn. When Wei Shao finally genuinely opened up about his deep hatred for the Qiao clan, which he admitted was still lingering, but then stated his willingness to completely let go of it.

Overall, this drama would have been okay if it had ended in ep 32, or had a few more episodes that were more realistic, convincing, and properly executed. Then there is still the question mark hanging on the essence and purpose of the story in the first place. The whole story would have been plausible, cogent and relatable if Wei had attacked Li Su and Bianzhou first. The enemies to lovers troupe was great, but in the end, the story and main plot were weak because they were driven by a cause and effect thematic element that completely lacked logic.

Please do not read further if you don't want major spoilers.

About the plots. There were many repetitive sub-plots, several plot holes, and some plots were inconclusive. Here are some of the repetition:
1. One clan betrayed the same other clan - 2 times.
2. Sabotage in the granary - 2 times.
3. Sick leader dying in one state - 2 times
4. River as trap for military troops - 2 times
5. Take over of one city - 3 times!
6. Woman seeking to be empress and marrying leaders who truly loved her - 3 times! Well, the first one was a betrothal.

Captivating Must Watch!

If you're craving an epic enemies-to-lovers story set against a stunning historical backdrop, The Prisoner of Beauty is pure perfection. This drama is a visual feast from start to finish—gorgeous cinematography, intricate costumes, and breathtaking production design that transports you straight into the world of feuding clans and political intrigue. The pacing is spot-on, blending heart-pounding tension with tender moments that keep you hooked episode after episode.

The chemistry between the leads is electric and undeniable, creating some of the most captivating romantic dynamics I've seen in a C-drama this year. Song Zu'er shines with her poised, resilient beauty and sharp intelligence, bringing depth and grace to her role. But let's talk about the true standout: Liu Yuning as the male lead. Oh my gosh—he absolutely owns the screen! His portrayal is magnetic, brooding, and intensely charismatic, with that scorching gaze and commanding presence that makes every scene he's in unforgettable. He's tall, imposing, and exudes raw masculinity while delivering nuanced emotions that draw you in completely. Liu Yuning elevates the entire drama with his powerful performance, proving once again why he's one of the most talented and captivating actors out there. His aura is unmatched—devastatingly handsome in ancient attire, with micro-expressions that convey so much depth and intensity.

The supporting cast is fantastic too, and the OST (especially tracks involving Liu Yuning's voice) is emotional and perfectly suited to the scenes. Overall, this is easily one of the best dramas of 2025—romantic, engaging, and beautifully crafted. Highly recommend for anyone who loves strong leads and swoon-worthy romance!

The Prisoner of Beauty reminds us: even in captivity, love can rule a kingdom.

The Prisoner of Beauty is, without a doubt, one of the strongest dramas of 2025 so far. From the very first episode, the story hooks its audience with a perfect blend of tension, elegance, and heart. The enemy-to-lovers trope is executed brilliantly, layered with political intrigue and power struggles that keep you invested until the very end.

What makes this drama stand out is not just its romance, but its balance between love and ambition. The characters aren’t reduced to simple archetypes; instead, they feel alive, constantly torn between personal emotions and the greater stakes of survival and power. This complexity elevates the story beyond a typical historical romance—it feels both grand and intimate at once.

The pacing is another strength. Every arc feels purposeful, building toward an ending that is both satisfying and memorable. So many costume C-dramas fall short in the finale with rushed resolutions or unreasonable twists, but The Prisoner of Beauty delivers what fans have long hoped for: a well-written, emotionally resonant conclusion that honors the story and its characters. Impressively, the drama’s storytelling is even more beautifully executed than the original novel itself—something rare and worth praising.

A huge part of the drama’s success comes from the cast. Song Zuer and Liu Yu Ning deliver their best performances yet—the intensity and vulnerability they bring to their roles elevate the entire drama. Their chemistry is beyond saving: raw, magnetic, and utterly convincing, it makes every shared glance and confrontation pulse with emotion. It’s the kind of pairing that lingers with you long after the credits roll.

It’s a drama that leaves you empty in the best way—because you’ve lived and felt so much with its characters that saying goodbye feels bittersweet. With its careful storytelling, standout performances, and powerful ending, The Prisoner of Beauty sets a high standard for 2025 dramas and beyond.
