My favorite historical drama so far
Personally, I prefer xianxia/wuxia over historical dramas. A great historical drama for me is usually on the same level as an average fantasy series, and yet, in my ranking, PoB was far above several fantasy series that I think are incredible. The plot was so well written. While the story is far from surprising and the tropes are well-known, it was so complete—with no room for plot holes or pointless subplots—that it elevated to another level, making it a delight to watch from beginning to end. Dropping it didnt even pass through my head.
The water metaphor that weaves through the entire story was included with such sensitivity that it's impossible not to learn a thing or two there.
The actors just nailed it. I don't even have to say the great work the main couple did, but I also would like to shout out to the other cast members. All the characters were great, heroes and villains. There were some tiny annoying stuff here and there, but overall, I would give it a fairly a 9.
TL;DR: Its amazing. The plot, despite being cliché, is flawless with no plot holes, and the acting is incredible. 9/10 easy.

This show is "water"... crashing, powerful, adapting but also gentle
One of the best series I've ever watched and definitely my highlight of 2025. It's absolutely brilliant written from start to end. Love all the characters and their chemistry. Finally a strong and smart FL. ML went from red to green flag in a very adorable way. I love Liu Yu Ning's improvement. Didn't know Song Zu Er before, but these two we're so perfect together (even the bts are so cute). Their process from enemy to lovers - slow burn romance burned hard. It has everything - an emotional rollercoaster, it made you smile, laugh hard, made you angry, made you cry, proud, gave you butterflies...I like the way they handle misunderstandings, no unnecessary drawnouts that made those dramas annoying. They handled it with more sensitivity, vulnerability, honesty and just right communication. And sometimes a smart move how to open a box badass-like - I loved that scene and the reactions of the generals ;)
Aaaand the support cast was awesome. I think Wei Yan was so lovable. The generals and especially Wei Liang - made me laugh and cry!!!
Normally I have trouble finishing cdramas without fast-forwarding scenes because of the maaaany episodes, to drawn out stories, the really mean villains who you just can't stand, stories are often too much... but this one felt more human. Even the villains felt human, their actions and decisions made sense because of their past and circumstances that made them to act that way.
I can really recommend this one.
GREAT JOB!!!

The Best C-Drama in 1H 2025
TPOB is the best c-drama in the first half of 2025. Everything was perfect from casting, storyline, styling to audience engagement. My first time watching Song ZuEr and Liu Yu Ning and after TPOB, I did some research on them. SZE is a very talented actress and clever too whilst LYN is an all rounder where his charisma matches hers in the drama. I rewatched some of the episodes and will definitely watch again down in the future. Well done to the casts of TPOB!Was this review helpful to you?

This is the best portrayal of enemies-to-lovers I have ever seen. In the beginning, they seriously hated each other, and not just a mild dislike. The ML was honestly a jerk, and I admit to hating him, just a little. But seeing the way their relationship morphed and shifted into love and admiration made me love them all the more, because it was so realistic. And don't even get me started on how hilarious they were. They bickered like an old married couple, and I sat for every second of it. On to the side characters.
OMG, I loved the generals so much, they're freinship so much, and watching them healed me. Every character was done and developed so well, from the Wie household to the FL's own family, I was impressed. Even the villains had so many layers to their characters, which a lot of dramas cannot seem to do.
Now for the stuff I didn't like (SPOILERS):
I feel like anyone who has watched the show is going to have the same complaint: the deaths.
I mean, I think it's just cruel to make the audience care so much about Wei Liang and then just kill him off. The same goes for the FL's cousin. All she wanted was to live a peaceful life with her husband, and she ended up giving it all up.
This was entirely unnecessary and felt like their deaths were only done to cater to the genre itself, rather than to serve any real purpose to the story, because I would have been perfectly fine if they were alive and well, which they were in the original novel.

Best Period C-drama of 2025
This is, by far, the best costume C-drama I’ve ever seen. Liu Yuning has completely embodied Wei Shao—his performance is so compelling and nuanced that I honestly can’t imagine anyone else bringing the character to life the way he did. This is also my first time watching Song Zuer, and she absolutely owned the role of Xiao Qiao with grace, strength, and emotional depth. The cinematography is breathtaking, each frame beautifully crafted, and the script is both poetic and powerful. Every episode pulls me in emotionally. I’ve smiled, cried, and held my breath through the twists and turns of their journey. It truly feels like I’ve been transported into their world, living their joys and heartbreaks alongside them.
Even if this drama ran for 50 episodes or more, I wouldn’t mind—I’d gladly follow their story for as long as it goes. Prisoner of Beauty is more than just entertainment; it’s a masterpiece that will stay with me long after the final episode. Kudos to the entire cast and crew—thank you for creating something so unforgettable. This drama will forever hold a special place in my heart

Gorgeous, Well Acted, Captivating Story
This is a gorgeous show from costume design, music to cinematography. It has complex plot and character development. The primary characters grow and change, learning from plot actions, mistakes and misunderstandings. The antagonists however are largely one dimensional and the primary ones are cliche. The biggest complaint is a general over all complaint for so many of these dramas -- the plot goes on for too long and when it finally gets to resolution, it just speeds through everything rather than providing clean endings. Was this review helpful to you?
The plot was engaging, and LYN and Song Er were fantastic in this drama.
The Prince of Beauty is the second-best WuXia drama that I have seen this year, along with the Legend of Zang Hai starring Xiao Zhan.Liu Yi Ning and Song Er have the best on-screen chemistry as they play Wei Xiao and Qiao Man, the main couple. The acting is exceptional for the entire ensemble, and Song Er was outstanding in this drama. Her character was smart, devoted, and witty. The supporting characters are also lovely to watch.
I love this drama; it kept me engaged, and the pace was perfect.
Synopsis: Xiao Qiao, a clever girl from the Qiao family, marries Wei Shao, the sharp and kind master of the Wei family, as part of a family alliance. With bad blood between their clans, the two start off wary of each other, constantly testing boundaries in both funny and tense ways. Over time, they begin to appreciate each other's quirks and talents. Through ups and downs, they learn to work as a team, tackling family drama and bigger issues to bring some peace to their world. It is a story of partnership built through trial, error, and a bit of chaos.

Her Heart is Like Water and Water Wears Down Stone
“My heart is like water and water wears down stone.” This basically sums up The Prisoner of Beauty. It follows the story of a clever girl named Xiaoqiao or affectionally called, Manman, as she wades through the turbulent waters of an arranged marriage with a man who has held a long-standing and deep-seated grudge against her family. The Weis and the Qiaos were once allies, their patriarchs once the fastest of friends and co-visionaries who dared to build a canal that would benefit the people of their region. But this seemingly steadfast alliance was broken when the Qiaos failed to honor it, resulting in the deaths of three generations of Wei men and countless others. The only survivor of this massacre was a young Wei Shao, who swore vengeance upon those responsible, including the Qiaos for not coming to their aid when they needed it the most.Fast forward some 14 years later, Wei Shao had grown into a fearsome warrior and highly intelligent leader of the Wei clan. In order to save themselves from his rage and warmongering, the Qiaos come into an agreement with the Wei matriarch to marry their eldest daughter to the lord of Wei. But destiny has other plans, or to be more accurate, Manman decides to change her own fate. It was supposed to be her cousin, Daqiao, who was intended to be Wei Shao's betrothed. But in fear of her cousin's safety, Manman chooses to take her cousin's place and allow her to marry for love, while she plots to become the lady of Wei for the sake of her family and people. Raised and mentored by her grandfather, Manman grew up to possess the tactical mind of a general adept at strategic and psychological warfare, and armed with knowledge in politics and diplomacy. But above all, she holds great courage, a strong sense of duty, and compassion for others, qualities that Wei Shao soon notices and comes to admire. After all, it takes a brave woman to willingly enter the lair of wolves looking to devour her alive. The drama centers around her developing relationship with Wei Shao and their push and pull slowburn romance, and how she holds her own, expertly foiling plots against her and dealing with death threats, mockery, and open hatred towards her and her clan.
From the first episode, I was immediately pulled in by Manman's character. This is not your typical idol drama female lead. She is calm, collected, and incredibly intelligent. She schemes and manipulates, but never for her own selfish gains, rather for those she cares about the most. Even when she is trying to obtain the upperhand in her battle of wits against Wei Shao, she shows great compassion for him, and when she chooses to lend him her aid, she is always sincere, never expecting anything in return. Wei Shao, for his part, may be cold and aggressive on the outside, but he's always just and treats her with respect, something that Manman grows to appreciate. Eventually, their mutual distrust and hatred towards one another turn to mutual fondness and love. That is the core of this drama.
Both Liu Yuning and Song Zuer play these characters like nobody's business. You feel their every heartache, you know they mean every word, and you shed a tear or two for them. I'm a Yuning fan so I may be biased, but he is absolutely excellent here! I was especially impressed when he acted in a tearful and tense scene opposite Liu Duan Duan, who is known to be a tremendous character actor and another one of my favorites, and yet he held his own without being overshadowed by the latter. I so love that scene!
But perhaps my favorite characters are the Four Generals of Wei, the comedic relief boys, and Wei Shao's most trusted brothers in arms. They were hilarious! They made me laugh and cry. Kudos to the actors who played them. The rest of the cast impressed me as well, particularly the villains. Su Ehuang, played by Wei Wuxian's adopted sister, made me so irritated I couldn't help but give her props for her acting chops. I don't remember the actress' name but I will always associate her with her The Untamed character.
I also have to tip my hat towards the production team. The set designs, costumes, and overall production value of this drama is S-tier level. It didn't feel like an idol drama at all. The subdued color grading and saturated colors of the costumes give it a more somber and serious look, which are not common in these types of dramas. The tone also feels more grounded and gritty with the battle scenes depicting the more brutal nature of war. If China didn't have stringent censorship policies, it might've rivaled the violence in Game of Thrones. The music helps set the tone of the series, sounding dark and frightening in tension-filled scenes and whimsical when it takes a breather with a little bit of comedy.
All in all, this was a very solid watch, an engaging historical romance with strong performances from the cast, a lovable main couple, and endearing supporting characters. My only complaint is that there were parts where it dragged a little. The drama and its pacing could've been better if it had been shorter. Still, I happily give this a 9.5 out of 10.

A Rollercoaster Of A Drama
Prisoner Of Beauty was a masterpiece! I couldn't believe how good it was. Although the main couple did everything they could not to care for each other, it happened anyway. Past betrayal made it impossible but possible at the same time. When they fell, they fell hard with no turning back. Female lead realize not all blood is thicker than water. As for the cousin, I did not feel bad for her Karma, she was very selfish and she paid for it in the end. I'm hoping these two actors do come together again for another project. They compliment each other well when it comes to acting. If I could give this drama ten thousand stars, I would. I smile, I teared up in some parts and get mad but I'm happy. Was this review helpful to you?

Elegant, Emotional, and Addictively Slow-Burn
The Prisoner of Beauty delivers a compelling mix of political intrigue, emotional restraint, and slow-burn romance. What worked best for me was the atmosphere and character-driven storytelling. The relationship between the leads is not rushed at all — instead, it is built through tension, duty, misunderstandings, and moments where they consistently choose restraint over confession. This makes every small shift in their dynamic feel meaningful.
The way the male lead slowly begins to lower his emotional guard, especially in moments where he quietly protects her despite political pressure, adds a lot of depth. The female lead’s strength is also written in a very grounded way — she does not fall easily, and even when feelings are clearly there, she continues to prioritise survival and strategy over emotion.
There are several standout moments where their feelings are almost exposed but held back at the last second, which actually makes the romance more intense than if it had been openly declared early on. Their connection is built more through silence, glances, and sacrifice than words.
The political layer also ties into their relationship well, especially when trust becomes uncertain and both are forced to question loyalty versus emotion. Some of these conflicts are where the emotional weight of the story really peaks.
The downside is a slightly uneven pace in the middle, and a few subplots that feel like they could have been tightened or resolved more cleanly. At times, the political threads slightly dilute the emotional focus.
However, the ending and overall emotional payoff still make the journey very satisfying.
In the end, this is a very elegant, slow-burn historical romance with depth, restraint, and a relationship that lingers long after finishing.

The first Historical Drama I watched ever
I usually dislike historical dramas because I find the unrealistic fight scenes distracting, but this series completely changed my mind. However, I still avoid historical dramas with excessive or poorly executed action sequences. As this is my first historical drama, I can't compare it to others. I genuinely loved this series. I can't fully articulate why, but it's a masterpiece. The writers deserve immense praise for creating such a compelling series, and the actors did a wonderful job portraying their characters.
I highly recommend this series. It's well worth watching and definitely not a waste of time.

I didn’t enjoy this as much I hoped I would
Con: I had to play this in 2x speed to finish. Slow romance. Chemistry was ehh. The female lead wasn’t as tough as I’ll like. The villains were awful villains and their reasonings were not so great. Story line wasn’t surprising or intriguing. The female lead side interests were kind of wack. The story was just lingering for me. Ending was lame. They took out people that I’m just like why?Pro: The side characters I did enjoy more so. There were some funny parts. The story was okay.
