Overhyped and confused
I almost dropped the series multiple times for a number of reasons. But there was just enough of a plot where you felt the need to see it through its conclusion. This should be labeled a romance series that is also trying to imitate drama/comedy/action/politics but just ends up imbalanced.Negatives:
-- The initial premise was intriguing but dwindles rapidly into a full-on love story where the main leads are like high school kids continually flirting with one another.
-- The main male lead is depicted initially as a ruthless leader with a lifelong grudge. Yet they do a slow motion shot of him pretty much falling in love at first sight, which really diminishes his character and his passion from the onset.
-- While I'm all for an intellectual and capable female lead, they went unrealistically overboard with her character. So much so that apparently, the accomplished male leader who led wars and ruled over clans for years suddenly needs constant saving from her.
-- Then the pet peeve of mine that occurs across multiple similar series. When someone is supposed to be a war veteran, etc. who are used to getting wounded and then when they get a paper-cut at some point, a huge deal is made about it. They also didn't budget much on the visual of the wounds.
-- The relationship with the couple is supposed to be unique in the sense that they are enemies, but it's not much different than any other arranged marriages with trust issues. They mush for each other so quickly that it's utterly unconvincing.
-- The series throws in a few graphic scenes of violence and death, lots of lighthearted and fun banter, tons of sappy romance, political manipulation and some war action. It's as if it tried to take little pieces of what made other series successful and forced it together awkwardly.
Positives:
-- The positives also come from the negative listed in the last bullet above. The few graphic scenes does emphasize the seriousness in the grudges, the fun banter between the characters does create chemistry and comradery, and there are some romantic development scenes that are humorous.
-- There are many familiar faces in the series who do a good job in their roles though not at the level of truly seasoned actors. And while Song Zu Er's acting for me was subpar in The Demon Hunter's Romance, she shows a bit more range in this one.
If you're into the romance genre, can definitely see this one being rated on the higher end. But if you're expecting more serious undertones, unpredictability, or action, this is probably not it. There was a lot of potential with this one if they were able to properly balance the different elements or just stayed in one lane. I completed this one with a good amount of fast-forwarding.

Love is a battlefield
The Prisoner of Beauty was uneven and had a thin plot, but it was also quite entertaining and humorous at times. Despite a bloody beginning and ending, the vast swath of it played out like a Shakespearean marital comedy. The Wei family led by resting grumpy face Wei Shao have it in for the Qiao family in Yan for failing to come to their aid during a terrible battle leading to the deaths of three generations of men in their patriarchy. Fourteen years later, Grandma Wei and Grandpa Qiao decide the two families need to mend fences and match their grandchildren in marriage. To say that the bridal negotiations and first days of marriage between Wei Shao and Qiao Man were rocky would be an understatement, not including a battle over a city, raging fire, and near genocide. Nothing a couple of princess carries and a piggyback ride couldn’t cure. And a prolonged discussion of and implementation of… canal systems. Outside forces don’t like the Weis and Qiaos cozying up or the idea of better transportation options and drought/flood control and set to breaking up the couple.
The newlyweds not only had to work through old family grudges and loyalties, they also had to deal with other family problems that arose. Despite being a cold, military man with very little, actually no, practical information about or experience with women or relationships, Wei Shao was mostly respectful of his despised wife until he learned what a valuable asset he had in her. Being spoiled with head massages, afternoon sweets, and proper fitting footwear began to soften his heart and mood. Aside from her annoying habit of whispering while everyone else spoke at a normal volume, Qiao Man Man ended up being his not-so-secret weapon. She kept her promises to her grandfather to restore the Wei family’s fortunes and to take care of Shao. She faced few problems her wits could not overcome, benefitting not only herself and the Qiaos but most certainly the Weis.
The strength of the drama for me was in the relationships. The four generals had a fun camaraderie, especially Qu and Liang. Shao and his men suffered through figuring women out together. I loved the teasing, blossoming relationship between Liang and Man Man’s maid, Tao. Advisor Gongsun not only had words of wisdom, but humorous quips, too. The women weren’t left out when it came to friendships. Man Man had a strong bond with her maids and also with her cousin. Grandma/Lady Xu was one wickedly smart dowager who loved her grandchildren and knew when to put her foot down. Little went on that she didn’t know about.
Just a note for their fans who have not seen this drama: Xuan Lu and Liu Duan Duan are currently listed as mains which is stretching things. Their characters didn’t show up until 10 eps in and disappeared for large amounts of time. While their characters may have been important to the wonky plot, other supporting characters had a lot more time.
Things I learned: 1) At 49, Peter Ho still has some of the best guns in Cdramaland. Yowza! 2) Just like bullets, a sword will go through two as easy as one.
Public service announcement from your old auntie Butterfly: Historical Cdramas love MLs to choke the FLs for some perverse reason. For young ones who do not know this and think it’s sexy, a man using strangulation to control or frighten a partner is a clear sign to pack up and leave. He is a considerable threat to your physical and mental safety. Unrestrained jealousy is also NOT attractive and a glaring, clanging warning sign. Wei Shao may have straightened up and turned into a heart-eyed puppy but real-life men do not change so easily or ever. Okay, off my soapbox.
A Prisoner of Beauty may have begun and ended with horrific deaths, but as I said much of it played out like a marital comedy. It did something few dramas can do, it literally made me laugh out loud numerous times. If I had magical editing powers, I would have cut the episode count and tightened several plot points, but overall I enjoyed this drama, largely due to the relationships mentioned above.
“I would love to be your spear and shield, to fight for you, to guard your path, and to make your every wish come true.”

Trigger warning: A prominent character sustained a “flesh wound”. Two suicides.

Booooring
Acting aside, everything else was boring. The plot, boring. I have seen it done dozens of times: enemies to love, blah, blah, blah.
The director taking a break from the commandments of what drama is for most of the series, with action picking up in the last three or four episodes.
The rhythm was so sluggish and the story development so inexistent that I started to feel awful for continuing to watch it.
Why, oh why do I do that, I kept asking myself.
The answer must have stayed in the acting. The actors really deserved better.
The music was another story: pretty unobtrusive, at the beginning, to really barging in at the end.
Where did this series get this high score from?

Enemies to lovers, Mature Couple?
I really, really like this drama—the acting is just so good. The female lead is intelligent, confident, and doesn’t take everything too seriously. She knows how to be herself, how to tell what’s real and what’s not, how to be kind, and how to truly connect with people. She’s not overplanning her life, she’s just naturally good—and honestly, perfect for the male lead. The male lead also understands his family’s problems, but he knows she’s not the one who created it. He makes her feel at home, and he’s fearless in his own way. He made sure everything is perfect for her. He wants to be with her only. Together, they feel like such a mature, graceful couple.
Even the side characters are fun to watch—their friendships, love, careers—everything fits so perfectly. The entire cast is just so good at acting. I’m telling you, this drama is worth it. 😭💌

The Best C-Drama in 1H 2025
TPOB is the best c-drama in the first half of 2025. Everything was perfect from casting, storyline, styling to audience engagement. My first time watching Song ZuEr and Liu Yu Ning and after TPOB, I did some research on them. SZE is a very talented actress and clever too whilst LYN is an all rounder where his charisma matches hers in the drama. I rewatched some of the episodes and will definitely watch again down in the future. Well done to the casts of TPOB!Was this review helpful to you?
Best Period C-drama of 2025
This is, by far, the best costume C-drama I’ve ever seen. Liu Yuning has completely embodied Wei Shao—his performance is so compelling and nuanced that I honestly can’t imagine anyone else bringing the character to life the way he did. This is also my first time watching Song Zuer, and she absolutely owned the role of Xiao Qiao with grace, strength, and emotional depth. The cinematography is breathtaking, each frame beautifully crafted, and the script is both poetic and powerful. Every episode pulls me in emotionally. I’ve smiled, cried, and held my breath through the twists and turns of their journey. It truly feels like I’ve been transported into their world, living their joys and heartbreaks alongside them.
Even if this drama ran for 50 episodes or more, I wouldn’t mind—I’d gladly follow their story for as long as it goes. Prisoner of Beauty is more than just entertainment; it’s a masterpiece that will stay with me long after the final episode. Kudos to the entire cast and crew—thank you for creating something so unforgettable. This drama will forever hold a special place in my heart

Gorgeous, Well Acted, Captivating Story
This is a gorgeous show from costume design, music to cinematography. It has complex plot and character development. The primary characters grow and change, learning from plot actions, mistakes and misunderstandings. The antagonists however are largely one dimensional and the primary ones are cliche. The biggest complaint is a general over all complaint for so many of these dramas -- the plot goes on for too long and when it finally gets to resolution, it just speeds through everything rather than providing clean endings. Was this review helpful to you?

The first Historical Drama I watched ever
I usually dislike historical dramas because I find the unrealistic fight scenes distracting, but this series completely changed my mind. However, I still avoid historical dramas with excessive or poorly executed action sequences. As this is my first historical drama, I can't compare it to others. I genuinely loved this series. I can't fully articulate why, but it's a masterpiece. The writers deserve immense praise for creating such a compelling series, and the actors did a wonderful job portraying their characters.
I highly recommend this series. It's well worth watching and definitely not a waste of time.

Interesting Begin and predictable Ending
Ok I really loved how this Drama started. I watched it mainly because of Liu Yu Ning and he saved many scenes where the female actress failed to deliver. The costumes, designs, plot and cast were overall really nice. FL Xiao Qiao role was interesting in the beginning of the story, I was expecting her to be mischievous, calculating and even backstabbing but after she went to Wei she acted as boring housewife, the scenes where she was trying to act as 5 year old girl Infront of the lord were not helping at all. This kind of made their entire romantic relationship flat & boring. Literary every other character like the peony unibrow lady, the half brother Wei Yan or the fat couple were fare more interesting and entertaining than the main leads. I thought the story will end with the last two major battles where the Wei lord dies to the north and his half brother Wei Yan wins by defending the capital, then moves north , unites the land and take care of his brother wife and new born. Would have been a twist but they went the most generic boring way with minimal side characters sacrifices.Comparing this to other master class historical (costume) dramas like "Love of like a Galaxy", "Story of Kunning Palace" it simply doesn't deserve above 9.

One of the best historical chinese Dramas so far
I rarely write Reviews, actually, never on this App. but for this I must! I have watched so many Chinese dramas, and historical ones were always so icky for me. I never liked how they flew around and and were suddenly air bending, I know this is mostly wuxia, but still. But this one. Oh man. I can't even start on how much I love this drama. The acting the relationships, wether it's the main couples, the friends, the family. The story is so well written.
many people can't wait for two episodes, I want them to only share one a day so this drama can stay for longer. I'm sad already knowing its over in not even 10 days :(.
Now let's talk about how smart our fl is. I HATE fls that are stupid, high voices and cant think straight. Even when she's being the "weaker" one it's her being and understanding human being cause goddamn there were moments I would have been so damn petty but she was more wise on the other hand. that's what I loved about her. She was mad and understanding at the right moments!
This is such a nice change! I am actively looking for more Chinese dramas just cause this one changed my mind about them. normally I drop them the moment I hear fl high voice, no fr why do they always make fl voices like this?
Thats besides the point. Definitely watch this. this is worth every second.

The beating heart couldn’t save the mutilated body.
The concepts are good and the soil so fertile that a really engaging drama could easily have been written. In the first eight and last three episodes there is enough plot to fill four series, but unfortunately we have the seven-year old child style of storytelling: he did this, then she did that, then they got angry, then everyone fought, then they got married etc etc. The events flash by so fast that we just skim the surface. What’s the cost of rushing through things? Opportunity for characterisation is very limited. We don’t see the internal struggle to reach a place of action. All we have is a character telling us how they feel and what they are going to do next. There is no time to “show” what is happening inside, instead we have to be “told”. This engages the wrong part of us, head instead of heart. Nobody likes to be “told” what to feel, hence my initial indifference to the characters and a really strong temptation to give up.
What was done very well however, came when the narrative settled into a more court based story. The enemies to lovers trope was the beating heart of the drama and very well executed. Time was taken to step through the stages of the changing relationship and both Liu Yu Ning and Song Zu Er did a convincing job. It was obvious that romance was the outstanding skill of the writer. If you primarily watch dramas for character driven romance then this is a good one and it perhaps accounts for the, imo, overblown rating on MDL. But as far as I’m concerned, one swallow does not make a summer, and the rest of it was flawed and painfully naive.
The world building was particularly underwhelming. There were too many countries with an excess of characters and not enough difference to distinguish between them. The social norms and cultural flavours seemed to be the same everywhere. Court etiquette and societal structure was not well thought through, leading to a strange mix of casual and formal. Visiting dignitaries arrived and departed without troops and advisors in tow and people rode off into the sunset with no baggage or protection. Add to that, unsophisticated court intrigue, laughable international relations and sadly lacking military strategy and you basically have an unconvincing drama. They finally managed to ramp up the tension sufficiently in the last few episodes but by that time it was far too late, far too much and tbh the budget really didn’t meet the need.
The editing in the first third of the drama, and final episodes seemed to have caught the same infection as the plot. It was clipped and choppy and it felt like being caught in cross currents. In the middle section the production values improved and there was some attractive costuming and sets.
Having just come from the “Joy of Life” series, this drama suffered from the comparison. Too often it reflected the weaknesses of the writer and failed to create a tight and compelling world.
