Nice romance-focused drama, female characters carry the show
Nice plot, interesting characters, good acting (minimum dub, which is spectacular), good humor, good cinematography, nice soundtracks.Qiao Man is an excellent main character, I adored her and never blamed her for any decision, I will certainly cherish her as one of my favorite FMCs. Wei Shao is a good person and skilled general, but has the emotional intelligence of a teenage boy, partially understood due to his upbringing and PTSD, but it made half of the arguments between him and Manman being miscommunication and projection of his own fears and insecurities. They ended up being a happy couple, enjoyable to watch, but certainly irritating here and there, Manman had way more patience and understanding for his toddler tantrums than many other women in her position would've. Lady Yulou is an intriguing antagonist. The other two main couples were also lovely.
I would have liked to see more insight into Manman's family, since her father seemed to be a great person, but she'd rarely ever mention him and would only attribute her knowledge to her grandfather and uncle. We only got one nightmare of hers where she ever shows affection towards him, not a single other mention. The plot certainly follows some expected stereotypes and cliché, and the last two episodes were rushed. Lastly, this is a clear case of false advertising from the cdrama community - not proper enemies to lovers. The hatred only existed for Zhonglin and the Wein clan, not for Manman.

A good reccomendation for enemies to lovers drama without most of the usual cliches
One of the good cdramas out there with excellent main leads and a suberb FL's story that has more to provide than her beauty. The story also between the leads develops slowly and steady and there is a strong character advancement from the ML,even after his somewhat harmful behavior in the start towards the FL.It would be a top recommendation for someone looking for an enemies to lovers story with a good plot and amazing second cast.

I am forever trapped in the female leads' shackles
I enjoyed the female lead so much in this drama. She is so resilient and intelligent with her decisions. She also cares so much for the people that it warms my heart. When the female lead started to warm up to the male lead, I also started to feel the same way a bit. I adored all the side characters too and enjoyed the roles they played. I do think the ending was rushed and wish 4 eps were not cut off, but I still enjoyed this drama. I love the enemies to lovers trope yippie! BUT I need a male lead that will stop putting their hands on the female lead and try to physically hurt them, which is my main problem with this drama. The chemistry had me giggling like crazy for the cuter scenes though. AHHHHHHHH I needed to see more scenes where the female lead dominated the male lead. <3Was this review helpful to you?

Overall, this was one of the better traditional dramas I’ve enjoyed. Most of the episodes were fast paced, the costumes and sets were beautiful and the chemistry between the main couple was also pretty sweet, in spite of how I normally don’t go for the ‘enemy to lover’ trope. Most of the Chinese historical dramas I’ve seen are palace dramas with a whole court of characters kowtowing to an emperor, so it was refreshing how this one focused on warlords and their rivaling kingdoms- which may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I just felt that it was a nice change from the standard palace drama. In here, these warlords still serve the emperor, but the emperor cannot go against them either, especially if they have a strong army. So they have a certain amount of freedom and self governance away from the main court.
I actually wanted to rate this higher, because while I did like the progression of the couple’s relationship, how the female lead proved herself as smart and capable and how practically every actor/actress here performed well with what they were given, there were certain things in the plot that I questioned and felt dragged the drama down a bit, mostly found in the last six episodes.
My main issue is that the main male lead was portrayed as somewhat incapable and incompetent. There was a part near the end where the Liangya army makes a surprise attack on the Wei state (the male lead’s kingdom) due in part to a secret tunnel the female lead’s family builds. I understand why Wei Shao felt angry and betrayed, but the scene made it appear as if he was sulking because he had no choice but to go to war unprepared and that he had no other back-up strategy to counter this attack.
This made no sense to me, because the character of Wei Shao is portrayed as battle-tested. Not only would his territories be fortified against such attacks, but if they actually turned out to be vulnerable, an in-character Wei Shao would be able to come up with a strategy to address it. I’m not against a vulnerable/flawed male lead…I’m not even against a female lead being smarter than the male lead…but I don’t agree with making one person stupid in an area where he/she is supposed* to be skilled, so that another character can shine.
If the said male lead is said to be good at something, then they might as well show it. Wei Shao is supposed to be experienced and skilled when it comes to warfare and tactics, how else could the Wei clan have gained such a reputation after his grandfather, uncle and brother were killed?
It also made no sense to me how Manman, the FL, kept crying about ‘having to send her husband to war to fight for her.’ The main reason why the Qiao’s wanted to marry her off in the first place to the Wei clan was because they had one of the strongest armies and were good at warfare. They didn’t offer her so they could sit around a campfire and sing kumbaya with the Weis..the marriage alliance existed so that the Weis (assuming they could let go of their past grudges) could lend military assistance... since the Qiao’s were rich, but did not have a strong army. Wei Shao's going off to war sulking was akin to having Genghis Khan crying because he had to get on a horse and fight.
I understand they did this so Manman could help him and show that she was good at strategy- thereby repaying her family’s past sins. While I appreciate the gesture, the plot device they came up with (her destroying that dam) and just giving a speech where the Liangya army just…seemingly out of the blue, were convinced and decided to give up and turn back- was too unbelievable to me.
The Evil Uncle / Liu Yian the main antagonist - The part where the Qiao uncle turns evil and sides with Liangya was not the issue. It’s the fact that he was too stupid. Earlier, Manman was engaged to Liu Yan of Liangya, but when the Weis came into the picture, they gave her to Wei instead and with a bigger dowry, because the Wei’s are* the more powerful bunch. What made him think that Liu Yan would not resent this past offense and would keep his word to give back the Panyi territory? They also don’t explain how Liangya all of a sudden had a bigger and better army than the Weis...
Lady Yulou and Wei Yan - Both the actor and actress did a great job portraying a scheming, Cersei-like villainess and a morally gray (but ultimately good) ally, respectively. But I feel that these types of characters are better served in an ensemble setting like Game of Thrones or even Nirvana in Fire. I found their parts boring here and wanted to fast forward to watch more of Wei Shao and Manman….but I am sure I would have appreciated Lady Yulou’s machinations or Wei Yan’s ambiguity in a different type of drama.
The part about Lady Yulou's ‘Huidian’ (that symbol on her forehead) was downright silly. When she becomes a criminal on the run from Wei state, they ask guards to look for a woman with this symbol in their forehead…and all she had to do was to wipe it off :/ The scouts didn't even bother to look at the appearance of the woman in their wanted posters. Later, when she gets disfigured and has to wear a mask, she comes up with a ridiculous story on why she has to have the mask on and Liu Yian (who earlier on, struck me as a good villain) is suckered into believing it. How can this crafty person suspect nothing?
TBH, I really loved the first 28 or 29 episodes; I feel that they should have ended the drama with Wei Shao presenting Manman to his ancestors. It would have given the best closure.
Historical dramas do not necessarily need to have good battle scenes and strategies, but this is one of the few that needed it, given the setting. Unfortunately, what I saw was not even average. After the Liangya army lost (because of Manman’s ’speech’) Wei Shao has to go off to war again to rescue Panyi ( cue Manman crying out of guilt, when she should take a tip from Queen Gorgo) and for some reason, Liu Yan knew that there was an area that would collapse because of the destruction of the dam and that Wei Shao’s army would get affected en route…but somehow, Wei Shao didn’t know about this…didn’t Manman tell him earlier?
With the Wei army off to rescue Panyi, for some reason the Wei state is not fortified, but it’s a good thing Wei Yan offers his assistance with his own army.
The ending battle is decided because their cousin in-law Bhi Zhi (who, for some reason, is an even better fighter than Wei Shao despite not having as much experience and starting off as a stable hand) decides to switch back from Liangya to Wei. They owe their victory to Bhi Zhi.

Sweet realizations of love
I really enjoyed watching this drama! The main characters' battles are quiet and reflective, and their actions bring humor and sweetness.Xiao Qiao and Wei Shao's compatibility grows through compromise and understanding. I like Xiao Qiao’s internal strength. She consistently shows emotional resilience, political awareness, and quiet conviction. Wei Shao’s resentment toward her family is also within reason. As he slowly softens, we can appreciate their growth.
The bridging of these two characters, among their friends and family, was written well. Moral ambiguity allows us to decide right and wrong - where there is no correct decision and is very human.

The story is about several kingdom that want to revenge and fight against each other. It's all started because of get betrayed and the new generation want to change all of that to get peace but it's not easy...It's become interesting when it's reach almost last episode where all it's much more intense and several key people died...

Love born from mutual respect.
May 2026.I really enjoyed this intelligently written and enthralling drama that kept me engaged from start to finish.
The FL character, Qiao Man, is incredibly bright, an ace strategist, and very determined. Raised differently to most women, by a doting grandfather who recognised her sharp mind and capabilities.
What starts out as a marriage of necessity, however, becomes far more.
There are many obstacles, grudges, and mistrust, but those things, when overcome, can lead to the strongest of bonds.
The ML character, Wei Shao/Zhong Lin, is extremely stand offish, does not trust anyone from her clan, and shoulders a lot. He's also intelligent, brave, and can be ruthless. His mother is awful (I didn't like her from start to finish ~ well played by the actress, though), but his Grandmother is excellent, and they are close. There's also a delulu female who wants our ML for herself.
There is action/battles, but this story isn't swamped by them. The romance builds gradually, with mutual respect sparking it. However, it's more about overcoming grievances, letting go, and moving forward. The overall pace is relatively gentle in comparison to some, but that fits, and I never got bored.
I also loved many of the supporting characters, especially the Wei generals /personal guards, who were so funny at times and had great camaraderie.
Definitely worth watching.

The Art of Falling for Your Enemy
This drama follows an enemies-to-lovers storyline. Emotionally speaking? It absolutely delivers. Logically and analytically speaking? It stands somewhere in the middle ground. What I enjoyed most about this show was the romantic journey of the two main leads. Their relationship progression felt intricate, emotionally engaging, and beautifully written. Every time they shared scenes together, I found myself grinning nonstop. Their chemistry is genuinely off the charts, and the emotional payoff of the romance carries the story all the way to the end.
I also loved the character writing. Most of the major characters feel layered and emotionally complex rather than one-dimensional. Even when I disagreed with certain decisions, I could still understand the motivations behind them.
Visually, the drama is stunning. The cinematography, costume design, and overall atmosphere elevate many scenes emotionally, especially during the quieter moments between the leads.
The biggest weakness of the show is the pacing near the finale. The last few episodes feel noticeably rushed, and because of that, several plot points begin to lose logical consistency. There were moments where character decisions, battle situations, and timeline progression felt emotionally dramatic but analytically questionable. Some scenes genuinely made me pause and think: “Wait… does this actually make sense?”
The timeline progression in particular becomes confusing toward the later part of the story. Events that should feel separated by months emotionally unfold as though they are happening back-to-back, making the passage of time difficult to track. It creates a strange viewing experience where emotional continuity remains strong, but narrative continuity starts wobbling a little.
Still, despite the rushed ending and occasional logic gaps, the emotional storytelling remained compelling enough to keep me fully invested until the final episode. At its core, this drama succeeds because of its chemistry, romantic tension, and emotionally satisfying character dynamics.

Dumber and dumber! they’re cute but damn I hate guessing games!
update: I finally pushed through and finished it. the last two episodes picked up the pace or the drama was getting dragged on and lost a lot of interest! my biggest beef with the drama now is how they killed wei liang!!! I mean the killed tge sweetest wei ever and I felt so sad and traumatised by his ending! they could have killed any of the other Wei brother! Gosh why ? I hate sad endings! They created the perfect ending and then ruined it with a fresh set of problems only to kill off so many beloved characters to finish that stupid problem. we all should have stopped watching at episode 32. anyways I’m still rating it an 8.5 rounded off to 9 because it’s still a complete and happy ending for most. I’m glad it’s over now.Firstly I should not have started this after Fated Hearts! I realise that now but damn this drama has 9 rating! why??? sure its cute but enemies to lovers? really? this seems like friends to lovers after fated hearts. plus how dumb do you have to be? I get it it’s cute and funny but the whole start of them falling in love is filled with her giving hints and him being dumb followed by him giving her hints and her being dumb! these guys wouldn’t have a love story if wei liang and xiao Tao were not there. I have yet to complete this drama so I will update later but gosh they’re so slow. it’s not even a slow burn it’s just boring! I want to be hooked until I can’t stop. The drama started out strong, I was binging it but somewhere after episode 16-17 I started dragging through it. I wanted more chemistry, something electric but instead all we got was missed hints and failure to deliver. I’m not asking for passionate love scenes but atleast show some spark! Also I hate so much political drama and side stories which only lead to dull outcomes! Anyways that’s all I can say till now but for now mt rating has dropped

Um drama de romance visceral
Bem, há muitos pontos para elogiar nessa obra, principalmente o romance, por isso, vou explicar os motivos que diminuíram minha avaliação.Faltou continuação de cenas nessa reta final. Cadê a cena do Wei Shao reencontrando Man Man e a família? Conhecendo a Fei fei? Cadê a cena do Wei Shao reconhecendo o valor militar do Yan? Cadê a cena da Man Man descobrindo sobre a morte da prima? Enfim, faltou mais capricho nessa reta final de drama, no desenvolvimento final de algumas cenas ou inclusão delas no corte final

A little disappointing...but decent
Prisoner of BeautyLiu Yuning - Wei Shao
Song Zuer - Qiao Man
Wow, I love the look of Wei Shao at the very beginning when we get introduced to him in the hood. I also love Qiao Man’s first impression because she’s sacrificing her future so that her sister can be happy. I can already tell she’s a mature FL and not one of those clueless FL’s in some dramas. Not only that, but I love how Liu Yuning acts with his eyes. When Wei Shao saw Manman for the first time, you could tell he was taken aback by her looks and beauty. But, there is so much tension built up between the families that it is going to start off at least as a classic enemies to lovers which I love.
Wow, episode 2 and I’m in love with this drama and dynamic already. Wei Shao putting on a show to gain the people’s trust with Manman lowk helping him. Him realizing she was helping and gave her an ointment for the tick he made on her neck. The tension in that scene with Manman acting it perfectly. But, still, they are at odds with each other so the drama hasn’t lost that enemies tension yet. And then the scene where Manman gives Wei Shao the pendant of the city and the sun hitting her hanfu perfectly. Wei Shao’s general look is also so fitting.
Episode 3 and Wei Shao finally realizes that Manman cares for the Wei people and doesnt want to see them innocently hurt by Liu Yan’s plans. He was wrong all along about eloping and now has his men on the hunt for her when she was helping him all along. I hope he gets there in time to save her from Liu Yan.
Episode 4…we get the classic running scene. All Wei Shao says is “Come here”, doesn’t make eye contact, and Manman still trusts him over Liu Yan. Not only that, but his running towards her when arrows started flying and protecting her by hugging her and covering her with his back shows his little bit of care towards her. And then she slaps him straight on the face after😭😭😭
Side note, I love Li Xueqin as a person and an actor. She’s the funniest ever on Hi6 and I didn’t know that she was an actor too. So, seeing her in this drama was amazing. She plays the character so well. Now it also adds up onto why she knows and is friends with Liu Yuning.
Awww episode 5, Wei Shao caught a lynx for Manman after most men can’t or won’t find it worth the effort to kill the lynx as a marriage gift. These wedding feels so melancholy though which builds the sort of arranged/forced marriage. The end of this episode gave me goosebumps. Li Xueqin’s acting was on point with begging the generals. Then, Wei Shao instantly going after Manman after learning she’s sick and was stuck outside for 2 whole days in the rain. His horse riding and fierce look while being concerned for Manman. Ughhhh, this scene was perfect. I also love how the generals were abt to help stop the carriage regardless if Wei Shao was coming.
I like how Wei Shao recognized the strength of Manman and doesn’t underestimate her. He even stands up for her when other ppl r talking bsf saying that she should only be used as a concubine. He made sure that everyone knew their place and she was an exception. Whether it was just for show, I know some of that had to be real.
Yes, we’re starting to get Wei Shao being a little bit more vulnerable with his emotions surrounding his family’s deaths and betrayal. Manman genuinely worried for Wei Shao and them hugging together in the rain on that cart. The genuine care that Manman had for Wei Shao despite all the political tensions shines through.
Episode 10: There’s no way that Wei Shao’s own mother drugged him just to forcefully make him take a concubine. That’s messed up on so many levels. But, we also got to see Manman slightly warming up and caring for Wei Shao. Yes, I love how Manman defends Wei Shao by not ruining his dignity and keeping that drugged night a secret as well as standing up to his mother.
Episode 12: I love how they’re starting to slowly trust each other a little bit more. The conversation with the tavern and the portrait was actually really mature. I particularly liked Wei Shao’s sentence: “I don’t trust everything my cousin says. Have you not considered that I’m also your husband? I want to hear both sides.” And then Wei Shao being protective over Manman as her husband.
Episode 14/15: I love the trust that is building between the two. Wei Shao rlly pulled through in believing her that she didn’t tamper with the seeds. He recognized all the help she’s given towards their city and the people. Not only that, but he decided to further investigate this issue to help clear her name and find the person who is trying to frame her. Also, Manman finally called Wei Shao “fujun” for the first time. His face when he heard that was priceless.
Episode 17: wow the tension. Wei Shao having to grab his knee tightly with his hands while she was massaging his head and then the noise he made. they’re both getting encapsulated with each other
Episode 22: Song Zuer acting drunk was really really cute. Her acting there just makes you want to hug her, she’s just like a teddy bear. I can feel their feelings start to ramp up. Wei Shao letting Manman literally cut him on his neck, but he’s still focusing on taking HER shoes off and feeding her water. Also, that forehead kiss, hello. They’re both gone. Fallen. Crushed. Done.
Episode 23: I do like the character development between Wei Shao and Manman. When Manman’s uncle did something evil, Wei Shao did not blame Manman for it. He is able to separate the Qiao clan from his wife, which shows the trust that he is building in her.
Episode 25: Wow, the love that Wei Shao has for Manman is so great that he gave Bogong’s spear to Qiao Ci for the duel. He did all of that to reassure Manman that Qiao Ci would be ok in the duel.
Episode 29: Wow, that episode was a rollercoaster. Their kiss was one of the most intense kisses that I’ve seen in historical dramas, I was actually super surprised. And then…they got interrupted and literally everything went downhill. Old tensions and plans resurfaced, old disbelief and doubt in each other started to resurface, and Wei Shao left to go to battle without having a proper talk with Manman. Still, Manman tried to show her support and love through the pounding of the drums and her wanting to go to Boya to help Wei Shao. She’s definitely an actions over words type of girl.
Im skipping to the last 2-3 episodes. I’m not going to lie, there is not a lot of episode reviews considering there is 36 whole episodes in this drama. I hate to say it, but I was just really bored when watching this drama until the last 2 episodes. I don’t know if it was because it’s a historical drama so it’s naturally more boring and more political, if I was too stressed out with school so I couldn’t enjoy it, or if this drama was too overhyped in my mind because my expectations were really high. I just could not be bothered to be interested for the good chunk of this drama.
HOWEVER, the last 2 episodes got me so hooked. The tension came back, the action, the suspense. I think if the whole drama was set up like the last 2, I would be so much more interested. I HATED HOW WEI LIANG DIED BRO. Like no one died in the first 34 episodes of this drama, but then WEI LIANG DIES, XIAOTAO IS LEFT WITH NO ONE, THEN THE OTHER GENERAL LOSES HIS ARM, BRO LIKE WHAT! THEN TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE, FANFAN DIES TOO TO SAVE BI ZHI FROM THE CONTROL OF LIU YAN. Bi Zhi, you couldn’t have run a little bit faster. Not only that, but I did love how Shiyuan came back to reinforce Yujun and return to his true family regardless of blood. The whole storyline with Manman’s child was cool and all, but I didn’t feel that connected. I do love her and Wei Shao’s relationship though, it’s such a mature relationship compared to episode 1 and the pettiness that was left behind. I don’t know, I really enjoyed the last 2 episodes and I was super hooked, but besides that, this drama was kind of a bummer to me.
I do love Bi Zhi’s character though. Commander of Boya forces, he turned from a nobody into one of the most respected generals that helped Wei Shao kill Liu Yan. Even though Bi Zhi went and fought against Wei Shao, I don’t believe he was trying his best or else he could’ve overpowered Wei Shao. Now, he has to carry on Fanfan’s legacy with their child. Ugh. He was always so understanding and caring and loving towards Fanfan. Now, because of politics, she sacrificed herself and he has to take on that burden and guilt and despair all by himself. Him at the swing and the harp, just replaying all of their moments together with Liu Yuning’s OST in the back. Man. And then Wei Liang’s burial with Xiaotao coming and saying a couple words. His smile, I miss it. Him waving with the orchids, why did he have to die bro?
The last 10 minutes of Episode 36 was also so rushed though. We didn’t get to see Wei Shao coming back, his return with his daughter being born, or any final “oh my god, I missed you so much” between Wei Shao and Manman. We also didn’t get to see how Manman reacted to Fanfan’s death even though they were so close, regardless of petty fights they had. We didn’t see any jump in the future to Bi Zhi’s life with his child. I feel like that ending was very very rushed, like extremely rushed.

MAJOR SPOILER BUT THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST WRITTEN PERIOD DRAMA
OST: 8/10Very pleasant to listen to and fits the mood of the drama well.
Cinematography: 7/10
Nothing particularly outstanding. Some of the editing felt a little dated and occasionally resembled a soap opera, which took me out of certain scenes.
Storyline: 10/10
This is where the drama truly shines. The story is well-written, well-paced, and carefully structured. Every plot point unfolds naturally without feeling overwhelming or unnecessarily complicated. The progression feels smooth and easy to follow.
Romance: 60%
Comedy: 10%
Friendship: 10%
Family Feud & Revenge: 20%
If I loved Pursuit of Jade because of Fan Changyu's bold and strong personality, then I loved Qiao Manman even more. She doesn't need to step onto the battlefield to protect her family and husband. Instead, her strength lies in her intelligence, wit, sharp tongue, and strategic thinking. She possesses a kind of soft power that allows her to win people over, especially her family.
While Fan Changyu's boldness eventually became somewhat repetitive in the later part of Pursuit of Jade, Qiao Manman remained consistently engaging throughout the entire drama. Her character development felt stable and well-maintained from beginning to end.
One thing I particularly appreciated was how balanced the episodes were. Even the final episode didn't feel like a filler, which is something many dramas struggle with. However, I do wish the ending had provided more closure and given the main couple a little more screen time.
I was also left wondering about the fate of the other regions, especially Yanzhou. The story focused heavily on Wei State, but by the end, it never clearly explained who eventually ruled Yanzhou. It felt like an unanswered question that was simply left open.
What I loved most about this drama was the romance development. The relationship progressed naturally and convincingly, while the comedic moments helped lighten the mood and prevent the story from becoming too heavy. Although there were war elements, the war arc never dragged on for too long, which I appreciated. Excessive war-focused storylines often become repetitive and slow down the overall narrative.
Another highlight was the canal development project, which served as the central plot throughout the drama. It was introduced and developed consistently across the episodes, making it feel important rather than just a background element. The story was well-arranged and coherent, although I would say it was a fairly straightforward drama without any major plot twists.
My biggest criticism would be the editing. The production could have done a much better job in certain scenes. Some effects felt overly dramatic and gave off a soap-opera vibe. There were also moments where the stunt doubles were noticeably visible. While they looked similar to the actors, it was still obvious enough to break the immersion.
Overall: 9.5/10
Despite a few production flaws, the excellent storytelling, strong character writing, balanced pacing, and satisfying romance made this one of the most enjoyable dramas I have watched this year.
