True sincerity can dissolve hatred

Truth spoken from the heart can build a bridge over a chasm. This show uses the image of sincere truth as a bridge, showing sincerity as the basis for overcoming and eliminating hatred. The drama depicts the journey of two individuals with opposing missions: revenge and redemption. Although their journey may not be smooth, they overcome obstacles, leading to a happy ending for both leads.

Although some character deaths felt unnecessary, this is a drama and a dramatic plot is essential for a historical romance. I had high expectations for the political struggles and wars of the Three Kingdoms era depicted in this series, but the romance and comedy kept me hooked until the very last episode. Thanks to the cast and production, they played a significant role in the success of this drama.

For me, this is a 8.5. The healing journey itself is a breath of fresh air amidst the typical revenge plot, as revenge can be mentally exhausting.

Extremely engaging...until it's not?

I got into this one with higher expectations because well, everyone was hyping it up. And yeah, I did get the hype for the first few episodes until the 20-30 episode mark hit. There's chemistry between the FL and ML sure, and it is quite an original enemies-to-lovers. However, the story eventually bled dry and had to rely on the cousin's unrequited feelings for the FL.

I started watching this is 2025, tried to go past episode 27 in 2026 and finally admitted to myself yes, I love the actors and possibly the story, but its flaws were made too clear for me to continue. However, I am willing to give this a second chance someday because it entertained me up to this point, didn't it? Or maybe I'll just forget about this drama. But seeing the good reviews, I'm disappointed partly in myself that I didn't get to see the value they saw in The Prisoner Of Beauty.

Like the title says, "The Prisoner of Beauty"— but in the bad way.

This show is straight-up misleading. In the first few episodes, the male lead was giving strong, smart, wise vibes. He had that deep-rooted grudge in his heart that made him tough and cold on the outside, but supposedly a good guy deep down.

They definitely exaggerated things to sell that whole “dark and broody” cliché image, especially early on, just to hook in the dark romance crowd.

Then comes the female lead—and no shade to the actress, ‘cause honestly, she did a great job. Too good, actually, ‘cause she had me mad irritated with how dry, emotionless, and confusing her character was. She’s supposed to be 15, but acts like she’s 40. It’s just so unrealistic. She’s like... dead inside. No joy, no fear, no reactions—like a damn robot. All just to match the male lead’s unstable personality and to fit into that “strong independent woman” trope everyone’s obsessed with lately.

But just ‘cause the writer wants her to seem “smart” doesn’t mean you gotta spell it out in every single line. Let her show it through her actions. The more they tried to make her look clever, the dumber they made the male lead seem. And that just doesn’t work for someone who’s supposed to be a ruler. He came off impulsive, obsessive, and lowkey toxic.

I really wanted to see a battle of wits between them—but nah, it turned into a cliché mess between a robot and a lovesick fool.

The drama started with wars and epic battles... now it’s just endless talking. The guy’s jealous of his cousin, the girl’s jealous of his ex, and the mom-in-law keeps starting drama. By episode 14, I still can’t tell how the girl even feels about him. The romance just doesn’t hit. Like, are we seriously supposed to believe this cold, intense guy would let a whole year go by without touching his wife just ‘cause she’s grieving? Nah, doesn’t add up.

And the girl—she’s clearly trying to play him, fake affection and all... but then sometimes it feels like she actually cares? She defends him, lifts him up in front of others... but at the same time, it’s like she’s just using him for her family's sake. In the end, I don’t feel anything.

And look—I love Liu Yuning, and I’ll admit his acting has gotten way better here.
But honestly? I gotta drop this drama. I’m done.

NOT MY CUP OF TEA

I don’t usually write reviews I prefer reading them but this time I genuinely felt helpless watching all the hype around Prisoner of Beauty for absolutely nothing.

I tried. I really did. I started skipping around episode 10, forcing myself to continue, and somehow dragged it to episode 18 before finally giving up. That alone should say a lot.

Yes, compared to some of the dramas we’ve gotten in the past couple of years, it’s slightly better but that doesn’t justify the level of hype it’s getting. Not even close. Standards really need to be raised.

The story? Weak. Outdated. The kind of plot that belonged to television years ago. Nothing fresh, nothing compelling. Just recycled tropes wrapped in slightly better visuals.

And the romance? Non-existent. People are calling it “slow burn,” but honestlyit felt more like a slow death of romance. There was absolutely no chemistry, no emotional pull, nothing that made the relationship believable or worth investing in.

And the female lead smart, yes but completely wasted. Watching her fall into such a predictable and frustrating dynamic was painful. She had potential to dominate the situation, yet somehow ends up getting emotionally trapped over the bare minimum of affection. And what affection, exactly? He’s drawn to her looks, manipulates her, lives off her, and still makes sure she knows he could take everything even without her consent.

Instead of conquering, she gets conquered—and blindly at that.

At some point, it felt like she’d sacrifice everything her pride, her home, even herself for something that barely qualifies as a “deal.” That’s not romance, that’s self-destruction dressed up as love.

If people enjoy this, fine—but it honestly feels like glorifying toxic dynamics and settling for crumbs of affection.

Definitely not my cup of tea.

Plot is important even for a romance drama

I'm keeping this short and sweet because it's been a while since the show was broadcasted, so no one will read this anyway.

I think I'm gonna get bashed for it, but Liu does not have the gravitas to play the male lead. I feel he's a miscast. However, like what I said in the title, plots are important! So long as you have good plot and pacing, actors are secondary. But I would argue that the lead pairing have very little romantic chemistry and do not match visually.

Song is actually pretty attractive in this even though I've never really thought of her as a great beauty. But she does seem like a good choice for most period drama characters - she looks good in the hair, make-up and costumes. Decent acting as well.

The worst thing in this show is the secondary couple. In particular, very poor acting from Li Xueqin throughout the whole show. She's very jarring to watch in scenes where she's doing any kind of lifting.

Overall though, decent pacing and plot. Not too "woke" in terms of characterisations, but political correctness does not win you viewership. A good watch.

The journey

Prisoner of beauty was not hyper-addictive, or hyper-active, or any other kind of hyper. It was not an excessive sensory stimulation or thrilling or even enigmatically epic. Yet, amidst all that it was not, for it was not meant to be, it was a journey that was perfect.

The storyline had a familiar tune amidst the cliché-ridden prosaism, but it delivered buckets of love, hope, battles to uphold peace and prosperity in the Central Plains, leaving viewers content. It showed that one dream for the benefit of all, can indeed change the world for the better and when that dream is a goal involving caring for the welfare of the people and bringing peace to the land, the universe conspires into ensuring that good does overcomes evil.

In the words of Wei Shao “the Yongning Canal brought huge benefits. The waterways are connected, benefiting all sides. The world is thus freed from strife and hatred. The people are at peace. I’ve finally had my lifelong wish come true”.

“Thanks to the companions on this journey. Everyone in the years to come, may all your wishes come true”. Qiao Man & Wei Shao in unison.

A historical romance saved by a brilliant FL

Song Zu Er completely stole the show for me in The Prisoner of Beauty.
Her acting was beautifully strong and her line delivery was sharp and impactful.
She brought her character to life with a smart, complex, and emotionally authentic portrayal.
I especially appreciated how her role was written as intelligent and strong, very relatable and easy to root for.
On top of that, she looked absolutely stunning in every costume and scene.
The rich historical setting added a lot of depth to the story, making the whole experience feel immersive and engaging.
On the other hand, I wasn’t a fan of the male lead.
His character felt toxic and overly impulsive which made some scenes frustrating to watch.
His expressions of anger often boiled down to the same crooked-mouth, disgusted look as if that was the only way he knew how to show emotion.
I’m honestly surprised many find him attractive with that constant expression.
There were multiple times I almost dropped the drama because I struggled to watch his scenes.
But thanks to Song Zu Er’s fantastic performance, I stayed hooked until the very end, so I rated this drama just for her.
I’m definitely looking forward to seeing her paired with a more fitting male lead in her next project.

The prison of a smart dutiful underappreciated wife

For the most part, it was a good drama but there were a few reasons why I couldn't fully enjoy the series.

To begin with the male lead is absolutely cruel towards the female lead, even putting her in a chokehold and making his army hunt her down like an animal "for morale". This marriage is an alliance approved by your grandmother. If you have decided to go along with it, at the very least don't be violent towards her. The story is supposed to depict how a cruel heartless warrior eventually falls in love with his wife but this is not a trope I care for. I have watched and enjoyed Enemies to Lovers but cruelty is not something I'm a fan of.

We see various number of people trying to harm his wife by maligning her character or sowing discord and each time the wife has to fight against her own husband to get him to trust her and be fair towards her. She is basically working on her own. There is only one time when he publicly stands up for her but even then she isn't sure if he will protect her. Even much later into the story, he is yelling at her in front of others. He gets jealous easily and takes it out on her. And she has to put up with it all just because the fate of her people rest on her shoulders and this marriage.

She is wise and quick on her feet. She handles situations as well as impossible people pretty well in most cases. And her husband regularly finds himself dumbfounded by her logical arguments. Yet he doesn't appreciate her as much as others do. Everyone around him has to keep reminding him to be nicer and even his brothers in arms chide him about not knowing anything about love.

This type of storyline albeit interesting at first got a bit tiresome midway. I just wanted to speed through the episodes to get to the actual romance. Yes, it's a very slow burn but there aren't even many romantic moments.

Eventually it comes down to her dutiful role of making him babies. Her helpers suggest she read some material because her husband is inexperienced and might hurt her. I was curious how she would have dealt with that but they just brushed past it. Had they addressed it and shown him being gentle (which I doubt knowing how his character is presented), I would have appreciated the show greatly. It would have been a great teaching moment.

I will say that the sets, costumes and fight scenes were all pretty amazing. I was a bit disappointed by the FL's cousin and Bi Zhi's character. They really made him seem like a mindless fool at the end who is unable to strategize or have foresight.

I love the army fellows characters. They provided some much needed comic relief and bromance. As well as the female lead's helper Xiao Tao's sass. The grandmother was another wonderfully level-headed person and a wise leader. And of course I loved the female lead. Especially her snarky remarks to her husband like - seems you have recovered from your cold. Just being able to deal with such a man deserves applause. No doubt, she would have been an even more capable leader if were not for a man's world.

Overall the show is really interesting but not entertaining enough to award it a 9 or higher.

A retold story

I understand that my review may not be well received, as there are too many fans of this drama, rating it 10/10 in each category. Nevertheless, I wanna give my honest review.
I wanna start with what I liked. Both Male and Female leads are good actors. This is my first time watching the female lead actress in any drama. She acts well and doesn't fail to fit right for the character played by her. Liu Yunning, our Male lead, has definitely got a model like physique and height. Those costumes suit him so well. The Music is good, and I guess most songs are sung by Liu Yunning himself. I always love the set of Chinese period dramas, and how they always have a small tree placed in their big courtyard, the one that blooms with white flowers. Besides, the costume, the makeup, the Jewellery, the hairdos, everything represents an era of the Chinese dynasty. There was chemistry between the lead, but I would not give it 10/10 like others. To me, it's 7/10.

Now, what I didn't like:

1. The length of the show: It's a long drama of 36 episodes. I personally think that it could have been done within 26-28 episodes, at the max 30 episodes. But those many episodes were too many.
2. Absurdity of the sub-plots: Some of the sub-plots were a bit meaningless and there was little to no explanation. For instance, when after the wedding of the lead couple, they return to the male lead's home town, where he rules, and the female lead, who by the way is suffering from fever, is left at the gate of the town, until asked to enter. A girl, standing at the gate has been instructed to keep a watch. This was the most stupid plot, as the female lead along with her servant ladies, is stranded at the gate and her husband(male lead) didn't even care for 3 days, if his wife has entered his home or not. Mind you, all this while, that girl was standing there at the gate with an umbrella as it's raining heavily. Upon learning that his wife is suffering from fever, still at the gate, the male lead rises from his chair and goes to the gate to pick her up in his arms, soaking in the rain. I mean he brings her inside his home all the way from the gate. I mean, OKAY, but dude she was cold and suffering from fever. This is just one example, there are many such sub-plots which don't add any value to the story.
3. Forteen year old enmity goes away in a year: Ok! it's not like that it can't happen. But when you have been haunted by the dreams and flashes of your dead family's killing scenes, it just doesn't go away like that. So our female lead wins the trust of the male lead and warms his heart and in this process, also makes him forget what happened 14 year ago. GOT IT!! But just one meeting with the people who caused untimely killing of your family members, doesn't make you forget everything so easily. That was a bit too much for me to digest.

As stated above, it would be better if they had summed up the whole drama in 29-30 episodes.

At is’ core this is a gentle love story filled with some soap opera-political to keep things going and entertaining enough without stealing the scene from the main couple. The narrative takes us carefully from hatred to complexity, jealousy to love and understanding with the wonderful and complex inner world of the characters, as well as slow but entertaining court politics and family dynamics that seem believable enough for the time in which the drama takes place.

The melonocolic, calm tone that overlies the story, slowly but surely builds up to the larger and more complex moments of the story, is beautiful and not at all too overwhelming so that other happier moments and humor can shine within the story and not make things too dreary or too slow.

The drama manages to figure out when to dile up the dramtics, when to give the supporting characters their chance to shine, introduce new characters and plots without leaving taking from the fact that the slow inner politics and family drama and love story, as well as the slow resolution of all the characters and moments, are at the center of the story.

The pace of the story is somewhat slow but steady, just like in the main love story, but it works for the tale that is being told. The drama has a tendency to get a bit too soapy and simplicity with politics, which gets a bit too repetitive as the story goes along.

But the dramatic, not too serious and soapy court politics also made it a lot of fun and very entertaining, and often addictive watch – especially in the second half, where the plotting isn’t as strong. The drama always gives the characters permission to drive the narrative forward with their mishaps and actions, which is good.

Each character has their own burden to carry, their inner devil and complex story, and everyone seems to have something to do with the story. The characters’ reason for why they’re doing what they’re doing works logically enough for the inner logic of the story that was being told.

The heart of the story always remains the quiet, tender and domestic, homely atmosphere that accompanied the love story and makes the drama very charming, even though it makes can feel a bit long-winded at times. But the characters’ slow-burning love and longing for each other was absolutely my cup of tea when it comes to romance.

The sets, costumes, and cinematography were also very lush and gorgeous and the few fight scenes we did get were fun and exciting to watch, even though they never took up too much of the story despite how much war there was within the narrative. This is often a harsh and unpredictable world, and the drama doesn’t really scrape off it, without making it seem completely brutal or just to have bloodshed just to surprise or shock the audience.

The development of the plot and the slightly too easy to defeat ‘villains’ within the story became a bit too uneven in parts and the politics and some of the side plots were a bit too cliché, repetitive and not the clever which make the narrative drop a little towards the end, even if it’s entertaining, but the quiet desire, sincerity, heartfelt talks between the main couple was the main lifeline of the drama and the beating heart of it all and the chemistry between the actors was so fantastic that it made this a very fun watching experience and very bingeable.

Almost great, but...

OVERALL
Amazing visuals, great music, good script, but terribly unbalanced. Watch it if you're looking for a logical and coherent love story and you're into political intrigue. If you're easily bored, you're into useful and important FLs, or you don't like tragedy, skip.

THE STORY
In theory, it is an enemies-to-lovers story. Male Lead (ML) and Female Lead (FL) come from different nations, and families with a real bad history, but they're forced to get married to protect the peace. Obviously, it does not go well... until it does. But really, it's not an enemies-to-lovers story, because typically, in these stories, both sides are petty with one another until love comes around, and that's not what this drama is about. FL is pretty much catering to the ML almost from the start and ML is the main one being petty. It's as if he's the only one suffering from the family feud and she doesn't have that baggage at all (which makes no sense). It doesn't last very long, but the next part (which lasts VERY long) is not much better: FL knows she likes ML and ML kind of knows he likes her but pretends he doesn't. The last quarter of the drama, the romance finally picks up, but by then 3/4 of the series is gone.

On the bright side, ML and FL are cute and have several nice, memorable scenes together. Even though most of the romance is very tame (PG-rated), there are 2-3 spicier scenes to shake things up. But I'm not satisfied. Do I feel like the 1st part, when ML is being petty, is bad? No, but I would have enjoyed it more if FL had been pettier. It would make the relationship feel more equal. She does mess things up for him a bit at the beginning, but not nearly as much as she could have. By the way, it feels very unusual to see a FL so subdued and effaced, when the trend these days is the opposite. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. It felt like a waste to make FL smart and then let her be so...unimportant. Anyway, same thing with part 2. Do I feel like the 2nd part, when ML is in denial, is bad? No, it's necessary given his backstory, but it's WAY too long. We're stuck in this part for more than 10 episodes. More than 10 episodes of romance not progressing is a problem.

To be clear, I don't think the love story is all bad, it makes sense and the characters (especially ML and his resentment) make sense. It's just not well balanced. There's also an imbalance between the romance and the political intrigue in Prisoner of Beauty. Usually, if there is one, dramas don't spend enough time on the romance and too much time on politics, but here, it feels like the opposite. That wouldn't be a problem if the romance was very eventful and fast-paced, but when literally nothing new happens for episodes on end in the romance and there's also nothing of much importance happening in the political side, then we get... well, nothing. The political intrigue in this drama is very interesting though. In the last episodes, it reaches epic proportions. But it feels so rushed! Why wait until the very last 3 episodes to let the fun start?

Bottom line: Prisoner of Beauty has great sets and costumes and good cinematography. The love story, though a bit juvenile, is cute and coherent. Secondary characters (Yulou and the Wei cousin) have surprising depth (though it isn't utilized as much as it should have been), too. But overall, the drama just doesn't quite reach its amazing potential. It is, however, a HUGE improvement on the book, imo.

THE ACTING
Good enough for me. I think FL did a better job than ML, but I do like Liu Yuning and wish him the absolute best. They did have good chemistry too. I also want to praise the production for a diverse cast (not everybody is thin in this drama), which is a change. That was really nice.

THE MUSIC
Good stuff!

REWATCH VALUE
I will DEFINITELY rewatch this, but with some fast-forwarding.
