Hated every second of watching it - would highly recommend.

And this is how you present a dark romance in a realistic manner. Perfect timing with the growing popularity of the “alpha male losers” type of behavior in society. Destigmatizing being manipulated and hurt like that no matter what someone’s gender/background or social status is was a good move on the writers and production.

I don’t think I have ever seen a better presentation of this type of psychological abuse. The way it was not exaggerated, and yet so horrifying without crossing into the telenovela idiocy territory. It was real, awful and frustrating to watch. Here I was watching every episode, knowing it would make me feel extremely angry and frustrated, feeling the cortisol's level rising with every passing minute... being abused and taken hostage by this drama... oh, look at me, compared to the female lead, I actually became a victim of my own making.

Here’s the thing though - Yan Ling was a victim, more than once. With the guilt placed on her for her father’s passing, being groomed by the family friend who was like an uncle and father figure for her, to then accidentally getting pregnant and becoming a single mother. To end with the king of the pathetic losers Luo Liang in her life. This woman could not catch a break. More than once I caught myself feeling more negative feelings towards her than Luo Liang, which only added to the already existing uneasiness I was feeling. I knew and understood that all that is happening is not her fault and he shouldn't be blamed, and yet emotionally I felt the growing frustration with how she kept blaming herself, overexplaning every action, becoming so submissive.

At the same time it was fascinating (for the lack of better word) to watch how slowly, but steadily Luo Liang dismantled her personality, confidence and life. Starting with just kindness and evoking some curiosity, to making himself a safe space, someone who would always be on her side, defend her no matter what, tell her exactly what she needs to hear. And when she was emotionally attached, slowly getting her distance herself from other people, making her doubt her every action, turning his own faults into her mistakes. And when there was no one around her, and she saw him as the only constant and familiar element in her life, that’s when he started to go back on his words, saying how she should be blamed for everything bad that happened in her life, making her feel like she is not worth of anything. Making her believe that even though it’s not easy to be with him, there is no one else, and there will never be anyone else who accept her with all her flaws. Truly tragic.

On the other side, hilarious how Luo Liang kept calling Yan Ling out on her “victim mentality” when he was the biggest pathetic constant victim of them all. I think that’s what made the show so realistic. He was not this smart, hot, competent and confident toxic gege - he was a loser. Notice how in these “teaching” scenes they always claim you will learn how to get and control any woman you want, and yet the first thing they actually teach you is how to pick the vulnerable target. Why? Because deep down they know they are just small boys with no confidence and maturity. They know they cannot get any woman, that’s why they spend so much time learning how to pick ones that are easier to manipulate. All the baby boy needed was a fucking therapy, but nah - rather be led by his trauma and bad experiences, have low self esteem for the rest of his life and target people who are vulnerable since he cannot "handle" anyone else.

And the worst thing is, you cannot win against people like that. The only way to “win” is to cut them off from your life completely. You CANNOT reason with them, you cannot make them understand your point of you. They know, they understand and they act against it to make you be in the defense position, always justifying yourself so you do not have time to question their actions. They will never respect you or view you as equal, there is no kind way to move away from a relationship like that. You cut them off without an explanation, you never look back, you do not care what they think about you.

On the bright side, big props for making sure this drama does not become too preachy “women good, men bad”. We had male victims and female perpetrators. We had psycho dudes ruining lives for fun and to feel better about themselves, and courageous and hard working men trying to stop them. Shout out to Lu Yi Feng and Paw Patrol.

Lu Yi Feng was for sure not flawless. I am still annoyed how the one night stand even happened and how it should not happen. Yan Ling was drunk, and thought he was someone else. He was not drunk. No way he would actually physically struggle with trying to control her and not sleep with her. This is this gray area that makes me feel extremely uncomfortable. I know he is a good man, he does his best to help her any way he can, he risks it all in the present timeline. He is a good father and boyfriend. But that past action will taint him forever in my eyes. And that's great. It's makes his character more interesting, it makes the show less black and white. It does not make it easy for you to decide how you feel about certain characters.

Then we had Li Zhi Heng. No, he is not this amazing badass detective, but he is what we never get in dramas - just a normal good cop who wants to do his job well and help victims get justice. Honestly amazing. Similarly, in any other drama Wang Hao Ying would be this semi-annoying girlboss who knows it all, but here she was not. She knew how to value people around her, how to work as a team. She didn’t need to be in a spotlight all the time.

As for the performances, they are ridiculously good. Not gonna lie, I did start the show for Wu Kang Ren. Was I expecting this type of role here? No. Was I disappointed? Hell nah. On one hand I totally see how he could charm all these women, on the other hand it was clear how pathetic he actually was. To deliver these contradictions was perfect. To make me feel disgusted despite his hotness? Deserves applause. We all love our hot toxic oppas/geges and we often go crazy for even serial killers in them dramas, so to give a performance so realistic and repulsive the good looks stop working? Give him an oscar.

Susan Sun was probably the one that made me feel the biggest range of emotions. Yes, mostly frustration, but at the end, when she finally saw and understood the truth and confronted Luo Liang I was full of excitement and happiness. And again - the gradual progression from hiding her pain, to having her pain being used and exploited, to accepting her pain and becoming stronger because of it - all well paced and delivered perfectly.

I think overall, the drama plays well on expectations versus reality. Luo Liang looks like a confident man, but is in fact a pathetic loser. Yan Ling looks like a confident and competent woman, but is in fact someone with many scars and vulnerabilities. Both Li Zhi Heng and Lu Yi Feng look like puppies and cinnamon rolls that need to be protected, when in fact they are really driven and brave. Wang Hao Ying looks a little bit like a snob that cannot be wrong, but is in fact a real team player and knows her limits. That’s something that can only be achieved with amazing acting and solid directing.

For the directing - masterclass. One of the examples of how they just knew how to convey the changing dynamics without literally spelling them out with dialogues: during one scene Luo Liang placed his hand on Yan Ling’s cheek, but she herself moved it to her neck... which is a far more vulnerable place and shows how submissive she became. Or how so many times she physically lowers herself in his presence - sitting somewhere lower than he is, kneeling in front of him.

What’s most important - none of that came out of ass. From the start it was clear she is not as confident and sure of herself as she presents, and he is not as kind and sane as he fakes to be. Certain reactions, behaviors, words spoken slowly build the full picture of how they are both pretending to be something they are not. So when their dynamic solidified, it did not feel weird, it was not a jarring difference from how they were at first. We just stripped the layers of lies.

Putting aside the structure of the story and its visual presentation, this drama is just pretty. Sure they overused some scenery transition scenes, but I rather they do that and use the money to make the scenes that actually matter look good, and not waste money on filming more shots of the city that bring nothing to the story.

Soundtrack wise, I don’t remember any song. That tells you nothing about their quality since usually I do not pay that much attention to OST as long as it’s not awful.

Overall, I hated the experience, and would highly recommend it to everyone. I was also surprised by how well they balance the ending. We've got the positive ending on the micro scale - the characters we grew to know got their justice, the villains got punished. But on macro scale we kept the realism - Luo Liang being punished does not mean much, because there will always be men like that, ready to take his place.

a darker shade of romance

When i started watching this series, I wasn't sure where the story was heading - there were these wierd cases and there was female lead's relentless pursuit of her friend's case and her excessive care towards her students - No teacher can be as selfless towards their students as she is, despite knowing protecting them could mean she could sufffer losses, she still does it, her excessive care tells you she went through something, but it wasnt apparent in the beginning what it was and dont know how to tie it all up, it took a few episodes for the story to establish what the story want to say and where it is headed. I was shocked by some of the stuff, and very grateful to the makers for bringing this story to life. As someone in the comments section said, this series helped label excessive, manipulative behaviours that were difficult to understand oneself, and explain to others. This story is a must-watch for all genders, not just women. Manipulation can happen to both genders, though it seemed skewed towards one gender in this series.

Coming to the story itself, FL had a great childhood, with loving parents and a comfortable life. All changed one fine day when her father died in an accident that turned her life upside down. From a safe, loving childhood , it turned the surviving parent into an emotional abuser and a trusted family friend to prey upon her. A one-night stand at her emotionally weak moment made her a single parent. And the scandal of her association with an older man made her the subject of gossip on the lips of her contemporaries, someone unworthy of respect. Though life/fate served her badly, she stubbornly headed forward with positivity, completed her education, secured decent employment, and raised her son exceedingly well.

Coming to ML, he comes from a relatively poorer family , raised in a faraway place. An abusive father, a meek mother who couldn't protect herself or her children. A childhood filled with beatings and more beatings. His only salvation was his sister's protection. His sense of 1st betrayal was from his parents - one abusive and one useless (to protect him from abusive one!) , his 2nd betrayal was in his perception from his sister - who was his shield and protected him from his abusive father - betrayed him by finding herself a boy friend , then find life away from the family .. he sees this a betrayal 2 ways , one loving someone else more than him and abandoning him and going away. Though his sister was probably a young lady herself with a strong protective instinct , who took immense beatings from their father in his stead, was probably trying to find a ray of light in her dark world in her boyfriend, and going away was her way of trying to secure resources, funds to help her much smarter younger brother to have a higher education that she herself couldn't have. If there was someone who is the epitome of selflessness in this series , it would be her.(along with FL )....

ML couldn't handle these betrayals - and turns into something he probably abhored in his childhood- a monster . ... while FL , though she had every reason to hate life, people, society, and hit back at the world for not protecting her younger self,
She becomes an epitome of kindness to the needy,

same dastardly circumstances turns one inhuman and another a divine person....

Dark character, painful story, bittersweet revenge, beautiful production

This drama is incredible. As mystery (east asian) drama lover, I have never watched drama like how TDR approach. This drama is so detail to modus of crime that using vulnerable side of human psychology/behaviour.
I cried on last eps because of whale story. I feel a relieved after (22eps) suspenseful journey.

Thank you writer-director (our amazing woman director), Wu Kang Ren, Sun Li, all casts, & all crews for this dark yet educative drama!
I wish I can watch more cdrama with mature & excellent quality like this (or The Long Night, The Bad Kids, The Devil between Us & The Long Season).
With this level, thriller cdrama can compete powerfully with the mystery genre of kdrama.

Just start the first episode… you’ll know what you’re about to witnes...

First of all, if anyone is still wondering if it’s good or not, it is good. Brilliant. No doubt about it.

But you have to go in with the right mindset. This drama is dark, truly dark. Your heart has to be strong enough to handle it. This isn’t for everyone.
If you’re strong-hearted and want to experience what true, generational-level performance looks like, the absolute peak, this drama is it.

This is not just a simple thriller. It goes much deeper than that. The motivation, the layers, and the way the story unfolds pull you in and never let go. It shows how far the human mind can go, and how terrifying it can become. A devil, a psychopath, so extreme that at times it feels unreal. You question it, you wonder if someone like this can even exist. But then it hits you… yes, people like this do exist. They think like this. They live like this.

At the same time, this drama teaches you a lot about strong women, about judgment, and about the decisions we make. It’s one hell of a ride. Something I know I won’t forget.

What I loved the most is how engaging this drama is. It never slows down. From beginning to end, it stays intense, sharp, and tightly directed. It doesn’t lose grip for even a moment. You remain fully invested throughout every episode, not a single scene feels like a waste of time.

The editing pattern is brilliant. It never feels abrupt or out of place. Every transition flows naturally, and that makes the storytelling even more immersive. The investigation part is also very well done. It’s not rushed, it takes its time, but it keeps building tension and keeps giving you something new, something to hold on to.

The way everything is structured, the locations, the atmosphere, it all feels very raw and real. There is a certain genuineness in the way the story is presented. The production quality is also top-notch. Honestly, I feel like I loved everything about this drama. There isn’t one specific thing I can say I didn’t like.

The acting? Absolutely insane. Top-tier. The lead actor delivered a performance that was terrifying, nail-biting, and brilliant. And the female lead, wow. The way she expressed emotions just through her eyes, that’s next level.

There are moments where you even find yourself rooting for him, hoping he’s not truly a monster. But the writer had a clear vision from the start, how this character should be portrayed and where his journey should lead. And they executed it perfectly, without any hesitation or compromise.

As for the ending, I’ll be honest, I didn’t fully like it at first. I wanted something more brutal, more final. But then I understood the intention. The point wasn’t to simply end him. Because people like him don’t really disappear. The mindset doesn’t die. Even if one person is gone, what they leave behind, the damage, the impact, that remains.

Instead, the story chose to focus on something more powerful, the strength of the victims. How they survive, how they rebuild their lives, and how they find a way to live again with their loved ones, even after going through something so drastic. That’s the real message.

Still, a part of me wanted more. I genuinely wish it had 30 or even 40 episodes because it was that engrossing. The character development was so strong, I didn’t want it to end. But at the same time, it concluded on a powerful note, something that will stay with you for a long time.

It explores obsession, possessiveness, and the psychology of a psychopath, how he thinks, how he behaves, and what he does to satisfy his needs. It shows everything without hiding or diluting anything.

And that’s what makes it special.
No unnecessary compromises. No weakening of the core story. Just pure, focused storytelling.

This is cinema. This is how you tell a story.

So yeah, go watch it. Absolutely. 🔥

How susceptible are you to PUA?

A drama that explores and deep dives into PUA techniques (Chinese slang for emotional manipulation, psychological abuse, or gaslighting) used in relationship crimes. It shows exactly how people become targeted and the thrill the predators gain from inflicting this type of abuse. The drama gives us enough hints from episode 1 that Luo Liang is not as he seems, yet viewers can't help going back and forth on his sincerity. They might ask questions, "But maybe he did love Yan Ling at some point?" and "Maybe he was pushed into a corner?" but the drama will make sure viewers leave this drama with no question that Luo Liang is not a good person. His cowardice, his inability to admit his own wrongs, etc. are all laid bare. Yan Ling on the other hand shows us someone who despite her traumas, wants and continues to work hard to be a moral person. It would have been easy for her to continue living in a fantasy, but she continues to survive and saved many others along the way. Just as she was there for others, she had others besides her to make sure she doesn't fall into a hole. Overall, an excellent thriller drama with A+ acting from the cast. One of my favorite C-dramas this year for sure.

Step-by-step manipulation

This psychological thriller series follows Yan Ling, a single mother who investigates her best friend’s suicide and ends up pulled into a dangerous web of emotional manipulation.

Suspicious and unable to accept what happened, she starts her own investigation and discovers a secret organization that teaches seduction and manipulation techniques known as PUAs (pick up artist). As she dives deeper into this world searching for the truth, she does not realize she might be slowly being prepared as the next victim.

The most powerful aspect of the series is Yan Ling’s gradual descent. She is highly educated, a university professor with sharp logic and independent thinking, yet she slowly falls into Luo Liang’s manipulative trap.

Luo Liang represents cold, precise and systematic control. Yan Ling’s submission reveals something unsettling: manipulation does not only happen to the naive or uninformed.

Her vulnerabilities, invisible to everyone else, are exactly what he targets. Little by little he weakens her ability to make independent judgments, distorts her sense of right and wrong, and builds an increasing emotional dependence on him. Every word and every interaction has a purpose: to scan, uncover her secrets and later use them against her.

He influences, controls and guides Yan Ling without her realizing it. He repeats that he is doing this for her own good. He isolates her from everything and everyone until only he remains as her source of comfort and the only person who truly accepts her and her past.

What makes it even more disturbing is his method. He takes the truth and places it inside a lie. Half truths pull you in, and before you realize it, you are trapped in a much bigger lie. It is so subtle and well executed that even the audience, fully aware of what is happening, sometimes starts to doubt.

Modern and highly relevant, the series works as a psychological thriller exploring themes that have long existed in society but are now becoming more widely recognized, such as masculinism, redpill culture and PUAs.

The performances of the two lead actors and the sophistication of the writing are truly impressive.
It definitely deserves to be watched and discussed.

Makes you never want to date again

This is how suspense should be written. ML Wu Kang Ren is next level!

What I appreciate about this drama:
-Brilliant script
-Intense all the way through. There are no wasted scenes.
-Police is not dumb
-Characters are complex
-Great cast all around. No weak acting

Perfect 10 IMO although content is so dark that makes me want to stay away from all people

There's a scene with ML and FL a door separating them at end of ep 18 that continues to give me PTSD .....

The Dark Side of Love

The Dark Romance follows Yan Ling, a university teacher and single mother, who sets out to uncover the truth behind her best friend’s suicide. From there, the story unfolds into a series of tragedies all rooted in "love".

It’s a psychological thriller that explores heavy themes, particularly on how the need to feel loved (or the fear of not being loved) can drive people to do things that defy reason and morality. The series doesn’t focus on just one story, it weaves together multiple narratives about emotional manipulation, gaslighting in relationships, and the long journey most of the characters take to confront and overcome their childhood traumas related to love and attachment, sometimes in healthy ways, sometimes in destructive ones.

The script is solid and perfectly paced across 22 episodes. It never feels dragged out or rushed. The directing is excellent, not only in the thrilling and tense scenes, but also in the way the landscapes of each city are captured so beautifully. The highlight, however, is the acting of the two main leads. They share many powerful two-shot scenes, and every single one of them feels incredibly authentic. As a viewer, I could clearly sense the awkwardness at their first meet, the growing connection between them, the warmth of their romance and married life, and later the pain of their arguments and confrontations. The emotions and tension felt remarkably real.

Overall, it’s a very well-made and compelling watch. However, I don’t think I could rewatch it. The topics are simply too heavy and emotionally triggering for me.

Wow. Intense

I wasn't sure what to think about this one after 1st episode. I knew it would be dark, and the filming is like a black/white noir style. A lot going on, that at first doesn't seem connected, but slowly starts building and before you know it you are hooked. The acting is top notch. If you like psychological thrillers... definitely put on watch list.
