I’m in love with this story. It was perfect. The story, the characters, the music — everything. Ever since the broadcast was announced, I couldn’t wait for it to air. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the chance to finish it earlier, and avoiding spoilers until now was a real challenge. But hey — what better way to end the year than with a high‑quality, heartwarming series.
For fans of Hidden Love: don’t skip The First Frost. Or the other way around — depending on which one you watch first. For me, there’s no comparison between them; each drama has its own charm, and both are worth watching. While Hidden Love is lighter, funnier, and sweeter, The First Frost is darker, deeper, and more emotional.
One of the things I loved most was the atmosphere — the soft lighting, the muted colors, the quiet moments that say more than words. Even the smallest details in the cinematography felt intentional, adding depth to every scene. The transitions between the past and present were incredibly smooth, with each timeline blending naturally into the next, making the story feel cohesive and alive.
This drama pulled every emotion out of me. I laughed at the sweet, awkward moments between Wen Yifan and Sang Yan. I cried during the heartbreaking scenes, especially when they revealed the past, and most of all during the final proposal — complete emotional meltdown, one of the most beautiful scenes I’ve ever seen. I was angry at Wen Yifan’s family, especially her mother. Some people simply don’t deserve to have children. This drama is proof that family isn’t always defined by blood. And I’m more than happy that Wen Yifan managed to break free from all her chains, while Sang Yan was her support the entire time — even when he was in the shadows and she had no idea. This is a story about pain, about the shackles that can hold you for years, and about the person who can become your light and your anchor.
I have a question: where can I get myself a Sang Yan. Seriously — this man is unreal. Everyone needs a Sang Yan in their life. Why do they create men like this in dramas/books — it makes all real men look fake. Bai Jingting portrayed his character phenomenally — attentive, patient, and emotionally intelligent.
Zhang Ruonan as Wen Yifan was exceptional. She managed to portray the pain, loneliness, and strength needed to endure everything her character goes through — alive, fragile, and brave all at once.
The dynamic between Wen Yifan and Sang Yan is sweet, awkward, painful, warm — everything a good romantic drama should be. Their relationship grows in a way that feels natural and earned, full of small moments that slowly build into something powerful.
The second lead couple was also surprisingly well‑developed. None of their scenes felt unnecessary; they had their own charm, chemistry, and emotional depth. They added warmth, humor, and grounding moments that enriched the story and made the world of the drama feel more complete.
The OST fits perfectly with the tone of the drama, enhancing the emotional weight of the scenes. Some tracks linger long after the episode ends, pulling you right back into the story.
This is a beautiful, well‑crafted story about life’s hardships and the light that gives you hope for a better future. The First Frost is a beautiful, well‑told, and emotionally rich drama that stays with you long after the finale. I hope 2026 brings more masterpieces like this one.

I’m finally out of my drama slump !!!
WOW.it was magic i literally couldn’t stop watching it.
what i loved the most :
- wen yifan : this character is so powerful without knowing it, she’s so strong, she went through so many things and at the end she finally lets it go and face it with her real family
-sang yan : i really appreciate how he yearns his high school lover and he never got over her en en if she « rejected » him.
- the story : around episode 20 I tought it was going to be just the two protagonists but the PLOT TWIST OMG, each episode made you wanna keep watching
-THE ACTING : I found it so deep and amazing, we really felt everything the characters felt. The actors really did an amazing job really.
I was in a drama slump and i found it ( or he found me ???) and i don’t regret it.

Fluorescent Green Flag
I’ve never written a review before, so this will be a learning process for me. It’s also a testament to how much I love the series, as I’ve thought about writing reviews for other shows, but never have.Disclaimer: I started the First Frost purely for BJT, and had little expectations for this drama. It is one of the last dramas with him that I’ve seen, and I held off on watching this series because the synopsis made me avoid it for the longest time due to the misunderstandings between the ML/FL. I thought it would have a really frustrating, angsty beginning phase, but from the start it was surprisingly calm and mellow. It was really a very healing story. I suppose a parallel drama would be The Best Thing with Zhang Linghe, in that they both are love stories with a healing, comforting vibe and over-the-top, fluorescent-green flag MLs. And BJT is the ultimate green flag. No other drama has a guy ever been that devoted to someone else ever. He sleepwalk-proofed the house, was extraordinarily patient in everything Wen Yifan did, was the most understanding and undemanding friend/boyfriend ever, totally forgave her for leaving him twice, and was a bit of a stalker in the best way possible (he must have spent a fortune on plane tickets).
While I really love this series, I will voice a few critiques scattered throughout this review. I really liked the FL (Zhang Ruonan/Wen Yifan), but I was frustrated by some of her life choices. I understood the logic behind them, but thought she could have made the same choices differently without hurting Sang Yan as much. For example, she could have just told him the truth and explained why she was going to Yihe instead of Nanwu for school, and asked if he wanted to follow her. Or she could have broken up with him in a less traumatic way. The redeeming thing is that later her character realized this, too.
Story: I knew going into the series that the FL would leave for HK, so I happily wasn’t surprised. As with other reviews I’ve read, I found it bizarre that she decided to go to HK after saying she would go to the police right before making that choice. Her determination in her statements, followed by just leaving without a word, was perplexing. Even knowing it was going to happen, I was bewildered, thinking “what just happened!? She just said she’d go to the cops if they messed with her and her friends…” And why do people go to HK when they want to vanish? They did the exact same thing in Our Generation too…I wonder if there’s something about HK in cdrama’s that says “let’s go here to disappear” 😊
I loved the flashbacks and the “the story is not over yet” parts. They wonderfully fleshed out the story in the best way, like extra snippets and visual postscripts. I also liked how the show didn’t dwell on the flashback where Wen Yifan explicitly told Sang Yan he was a backup. They showed other scenes of their initial separation many times throughout the series but didn’t replay that particular scene more than once or twice. And they also showed it at the very beginning of the series, which was refreshing.
The cinematography is beautiful. It’s a bit abstract in its lighting, and I liked how, in the emotional parts of the show that prelude something ominous, the camera is often handheld, conveying a sense of shakiness.
Acting: I can see why some people would say the FL’s acting was a bit wooden, though I felt the FL/ML had a charming dynamic in their interactions and dialogue. BJT’s acting was extraordinary, and ZRN was almost as good. The more I watch of her, the more I like her. She has this shy/confidence that is hard to describe until you see it. The second leads were okay. That is why I gave the show a 9.5/10 for acting. The second couple was sweet, but I think they could have had a better getting-together story than troubleshooting the grandparents' relationship. I have no idea why the grandparents got so much airtime. Rewatching it now, I always skip past them.
BJT's demeanor is super awesome too 😊 He may be a fluorescent green flag, but one with a lot of confidence and attitude. And ZRN complements him well with a more subtle demeanor.
Music: Awesome. The more I listen to the soundtrack, the more I like it. I have a few of the songs on my playlists now 😊
Rewatch value: I definitely think this show is worth rewatching multiple times. For me, when I finish shows I really like, I slowly move on by rewatching them, and I am still doing that with this drama.
This drama really hit me in the most wonderful way. I recommend that anyone who is on the fence about watching this show give it a try 😊

THE GREENEST MALE LEAD EVER
This series was simply amazing. I don't write reviews unless I really love a series, so you can understand if I'm writing one for this. The storyline was great. The actors perfomace was phenomenal. And the best of all was the male lead. The character is the greenest flag out of all the other male leads in any other series. Some people might argue about this, but I'll tell you why he is the best amongst all.No matter how many times the female lead pushed him away, understood her and continued being there for her. He understood that woman without her having to say a single thing. He is the most attentive person a woman can find. The way he admires her with eyes full of love and tears when he sees her doing something she loves. The way he reassures and lets her know that she deserves nothing but the best every single time she thinks she's not worth it all.
There have been many others who have done this, but no one has done it as well as Sang Yan. The lengths he went through and would go through for her🤌. It's how he stayed, even though she pushed him because he knew she had her reasons and would definitely come back one day. He is a man any girl would wish for.
The FL's friendship is also something worth praising. I loved how FL's best friend stayed with her no matter what. And her love story was cute too. It was well developed. All the characters in the series were well-written, and the actors did an incredible job playing them. They justified their roles.

Painful, yearning, beautiful.
The First Frost — 10/10I accidentally watched *The First Frost* before *Hidden Love* because I completely forgot the order 😭. I realized it after around 3 episodes, but by then I was already invested, so I decided to just continue.
And honestly… this drama hurt.
The yearning between Sang Yan and Wen Yifan is probably what stayed with me the most. Almost every episode has this feeling of two people who clearly care about each other, but circumstances, trauma, and their own fears keep getting in the way. It never felt like the pain was just there for cheap drama either. You can actually feel how much their past affects the way they approach love.
Wen Yifan especially broke my heart. Watching someone struggle to believe that they deserve to be loved and to have something good without constantly expecting it to disappear was genuinely painful.
And Sang Yan… the way he loves her without constantly forcing her to open up is probably one of my favorite things about their relationship. Their romance is slow, complicated and frustrating, but that's also what made the payoff feel meaningful.
The atmosphere of this drama also fits the story perfectly. Everything feels a little quiet, lonely and melancholic. Even the happy moments somehow have this lingering sadness behind them.
I haven't watched *Hidden Love* yet, so I obviously experienced this story without that background. I'm planning to watch it next, and I'm actually curious how that will change the way I see Sang Yan and the whole story.
This wasn't an easy watch emotionally, but that's probably why it's going to stay with me.

Romance, Mystery and Enough Frustration to Make You Want to Punch Someone
First Frost makes you laugh out loud, swoon over a romantic moment, and then suddenly feel like punching a villain in the face. It is an emotional roller coaster, and that is precisely what makes it so entertaining.First Frost can be seen as a companion drama to Hidden Love. While Hidden Love focuses almost entirely on the sweet, youthful romance between Sang Zhi and Duan Jiaxu, First Frost shifts the spotlight to Sang Zhi's brother, Sang Yan, and his complicated relationship with his high-school sweetheart, Wen Yifan. They are two separate stories, but both are immensely enjoyable.
Where First Frost is particularly effective is in the way it combines romance with mystery. Sang Yan and Yifan clearly have a history, and their reunion after years apart is filled with awkwardness, denial, and unresolved feelings. They pretend not to recognise each other, which immediately sets the tone for the deliciously uncomfortable humour that follows.
But the central question is: why did Yifan leave Sang Yan?
Why would she reject Sang Yan when it is obvious that he was deeply devoted to her? The drama gradually reveals that there is far more behind their separation than a simple change of heart, and this mystery gives the romance an emotional depth that keeps the story moving.
The drama succeeds because it takes the audience to emotional extremes. One moment, I found myself guffawing at the sheer awkwardness of Sang Yan and Yifan's encounters. The next, I was exasperated by Sang Yan's obvious jealousy. He claims that he is completely over Yifan, but whenever another potential suitor appears, he suddenly becomes cynical, resentful, and thoroughly unable to hide his feelings.
His behaviour may not always be admirable, but it is very entertaining to watch.
The coincidences that keep throwing them together are, admittedly, rather convenient. In a crowded city, what are the chances of constantly walking into the same person? And eventually ending up under the same roof? Coincidence—or perhaps something a little more deliberate? Realistic or not, these situations create much of the awkwardness and humour that the drama captures so seamlessly.
Then there is the darker side of the story.
The appearance of Yifan's harasser is enough to make your blood boil. You may find yourself wanting to punch him on her behalf. It is immediately obvious that there is a disturbing history between them, but the drama keeps us asking: What happened? Why is Yifan so frightened of him? And how much did this part of her past contribute to the breakdown of her relationship with Sang Yan?
The drama also deals with family relationships in a way that can be deeply frustrating. I found it difficult not to feel disgusted with a mother who makes so little effort to protect her daughter when she is in despair, yet still expects unquestioning respect and obedience.
When you suddenly discover that you have a half-brother you never knew existed, that is rather a lot to take in. Filial piety should not simply be expected; surely, to some extent, it should also be earned. Yifan asks a very good question: as her mother, can she simply disregard her daughter's feelings?
Against all this darkness are moments of extraordinary tenderness. Returning to places filled with memories, finally confessing feelings that have been buried for years, and allowing oneself to be loved again—these scenes remind us why romantic dramas remain so popular. Falling in love is, after all, a beautiful thing.
There is also a satisfying element of karma in the story. People do, to a certain extent, reap what they sow.
And, of course, the cute cats and dogs provide that extra tug on the heartstrings.
A Few Things the Drama Made Me Think About:
- Communication matters.
If Sang Yan and Yifan had communicated more openly, they could probably have spared themselves years of pain. However, I also understand why this was not so simple. In a reserved culture, expressing one's deepest fears can be extremely difficult—especially when someone has been conditioned to believe that they will be despised for something that was not their fault.
That said, I still found myself becoming annoyed with Yifan for keeping so much to herself. Surely Sang Yan would have helped her if he had known.
- Being mean is not a good strategy for winning back a lost love.
Sang Yan can be needlessly mean to Yifan. His sarcasm and coldness may conceal his hurt, but they do not exactly make reconciliation easier.
- Running away does not always solve the problem.
Sometimes, removing yourself from a dangerous situation is necessary. But simply running away from unresolved problems can also leave the perpetrator with too much power. It allows them to remain the cat while you continue to live as the frightened mouse.
And, Because No Review Is Complete Without a Few Nitpicks...
- Sang Yan and Yifan seem destined to walk into each other wherever they go. In a city with millions of people, what are the chances? But then, without these highly convenient coincidences, we would lose much of the drama's humour and awkward charm.
- Chinese dramas have a remarkable habit of showing waitresses, government officers, and police officers as exceptionally kind and helpful. Personally, based on my own experiences travelling in China, I am not entirely convinced that this is always the reality.
- And finally, I have to ask: does this country not have an anti-stalking law?
Overall Verdict
First Frost is a highly enjoyable drama that successfully combines humour, romance, suspense, mystery, anger, and tenderness. The central romance works because it is not simply about two people falling in love. It is about what happens when love is interrupted by fear, secrets, trauma, pride, and years of silence.
The drama can be frustrating. The characters can be frustrating. Some of the coincidences are decidedly improbable. But these flaws are more than compensated for by the chemistry, emotional tension, humour, and genuine tenderness between the characters.
Overall, I rate First Frost highly.
After all, it is always beautiful to fall in love—even if, years after marriage, you may eventually find yourselves at each other's throats.

A DRAMA TO BE WATCHED DURING WINTER, IF YOU MAY
Sang Yan. Sang Yan. Sang Yan. And I’m going to say it again: Sang Yan!!I went into The First Frost expecting to like it, but I did not expect to feel THIS much. I absolutely loved the story, loved the writing, and honestly, I love the writer for giving us a story filled with so much yearning, emotional complexity, and characters that actually feel like people.
And of course, Bai Jingting and Zhang Ruonan were phenomenal. I already love Bai Jingting, but Sang Yan?? The man that you are!! The way he carried that character—the longing, the restraint, the tenderness, the things left unsaid—was just incredible. His acting made Sang Yan's yearning feel almost tangible.
And Ruonan was equally amazing. She was phenomenal in her role. You could feel Wen Yifan's pain through her acting, even in moments where she didn't say much. Her expressions and little changes in emotion did so much of the storytelling. Bai Jingting and Zhang Ruonan had such a strong emotional connection that their scenes could absolutely destroy me.
Miaoyi and Edward were great in their roles too, but honestly, so was everyone else. The supporting cast really added to the story rather than just existing around the leads. Each character felt like they had their own personality and purpose.
And I HAVE to talk about Yifan.
I actually really liked how her character was written. I know some people dislike her, but honestly, I think anyone who hates her simply because she isn't an effortlessly cute, cheerful, perfectly agreeable female lead is missing the point of her character. Female characters don't always have to be cute or easy to like. Yifan is complicated. She's flawed, emotionally guarded, sometimes frustrating, and carrying a lot of pain—and that's exactly what makes her interesting.
I appreciate that the writer allowed her to be a complex female character instead of forcing her into a stereotypical lovable heroine mold. Her characterization made sense to me, and Ruonan's performance made it even better.
But let's be serious.
SANG YAN.
The yearning.
THE YEARNING.
This man spent so much time carrying feelings that he couldn't simply put into words, and Bai Jingting somehow managed to communicate all of that through his acting. There were moments where I genuinely wanted to reach through the screen and comfor him.
Sang Yan, the man that you are.
And somehow this drama decided that making me emotionally devastated wasn't enough—it had to make me cry repeatedly while I was in the middle of my exams. I was supposed to be studying. Instead, I was sitting there emotionally destroyed over fictional people. (I still got 95%, so it was very worth it!!)
So yes, I loved the story. I loved the writing. I loved the characters. I loved the acting. I loved the emotional depth.
And most importantly:
SANG YAN.
10/10 for the yearning.
10/10 for Bai Jingting.
10/10 for Zhang Ruonan.
10/10 for making me cry during exams.
Sang Yan, you will never not be the norm.

Beautiful Drama and I Cannot Find Anything Close
I am about to glaze the hell out of this drama, but for good reason. Like any piece of media I have minor nitpicks but other than that this drama is probably the best cdrama ive watched thus far. The chemistry is amazing, the plot is great, and the sexual assault is treated realistically but respectfully and there is no victim blaming from the male lead. The male lead is genuinely perfect like damn can I have a man like Sang Yan. The very few things I dislike about this drama are minor, such as the lack of development of the ML's rivals for the FL'S attention, as well as a kinda boring side couple, but other than that I loved this drama and I want more like it.Was this review helpful to you?
SA survivor and her wholesome lover
So this drama is about an introvert girl who falls in love with an extrovert guy. It's pretty standard romantic story but they are cute together.My problem is that they take wayy too much time to develop some chemistry and the romance is too slow paced for me. The story could have been so much more nuanced but they missed that chance and kind of started running in circles after one point
The FL has past traumas and she is pretty much dealing with it on her own.
The ML desperately wants to be a part of her life and shine some light in her dark world but he is very careful about it because he doesn't want to violate her private space and get her creeped out.
She takes sooo much time to finally open up to her crush but the drama actually makes it worth it.
I have to appreciate the villain for giving me goosebumps and looking menacingly scary and predatory. He made the drama interesting .
I have seen the male lead before and I won't say it's his best work in acting. I have definitely seen better from him. The female lead was alright but I wouldn't call her performance stood out to me.
It's a decent watch for romance loving audience if they have the patience to finish the whole thing.

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL STORY
Loved it!!!!!! The acting, the story....everything was amazing!!!!!! And to top it all off, she was a lovely, gentle and caring person, and he was what the perfect man!!!!! Unlike all these OTT dramas these days where the female has to be the smartest and toughest and the male always plays second fiddle!!!!!
