Must Watch
Bai Jing Ting is easily becoming one of my favorite Chinese actors. I've yet to see him not act a role well. This one is, again, a great story with a perfect matchup for the main leads. You will have every emotion pulled out of you as you watch this. If you're looking for a quick ending with no climax, this isn't your drama. This one is for a person that likes a really great story and how it unfolds. Was this review helpful to you?

The best one
I really liked yuru and jiusi pair and their understanding, all the efforts they made to protect each other. Its really a good one to watch. Even though they started by some misunderstandings their relationship gradually grew into something specail both of them made equal efforts to understand each other, support each other during hardships. It shows the progress of their relationship, FL knowledge and courage in business, ML strength and everythingWas this review helpful to you?

This is Destined to be my most favorite drama!
After How Dare You?!, this is probably the best historical c-drama I’ve watched so far, and I’m still suffering from the post-drama hangover. This show is so underrated.Destined follows Liu Yu Ru, a merchant’s daughter who dreams of marrying into a good family. She eventually marries the wealthy young master Gu Jiu Si, only to discover that he initially resents her and believes she married him for money. But as the two gradually navigate marriage, family expectations, business struggles, and political turmoil together, their relationship slowly transforms into one built on trust, partnership, and genuine love.
It is a love-after-marriage trope, and honestly, after watching dramas filled with obsessively possessive male leads, this felt like such a breath of fresh air.
The early episodes focus heavily on the chemistry between the two leads and how their affection slowly deepens over time. I read that some viewers found the female lead insufferable or thought her character lacked appeal, but personally, I found Yu Ru and Jiu Si to be exactly what the emperor described them as: a match made in heaven.
What makes the romance so refreshing is that the drama allows devotion to feel soft rather than possessive. Jiu Si absolutely adores Yu Ru, but the relationship rarely feels controlling. Over time, Yu Ru becomes the person who stabilizes him psychologically. He is not just romantically attached to her, he becomes emotionally anchored to her presence. By the latter half of the story, Yu Ru essentially becomes the person holding his soul together.
The side characters also have surprising depth. There are many characters introduced throughout the series, and while some names can initially be difficult to remember, each character has a distinct personality that makes them stand out once you become invested in the story.
The most memorable character for me, aside from the main couple, was Emperor Fan Xuan. What I loved about his storyline was how the drama explored the painful contrast between being a successful ruler and being a father. He managed to pacify the nation and bring peace and stability to his people, yet failed to do the same within his own family.
There was a short drama I once watched where a transmigrator-turned-empress said, “This is what it feels like to stand at the top. It’s so lonely.” That line immediately came back to me while watching Fan Xuan’s journey because it perfectly captures his tragedy. The higher he rose, the more isolated he became.
As a parent, his storyline genuinely broke my heart. There is something devastating about watching someone succeed in everything except the relationship with their own child. Hearing others imply that your child is incapable or disappointing feels, in some ways, like being told you failed as a parent. Those scenes were incredibly painful to watch.
The writing is one of the drama’s strongest points. The storytelling was compelling, and the pacing felt balanced throughout. It never felt rushed, but it also never dragged for me. While the cinematography may not be as visually stunning as Pursuit of Jade, I honestly think it stands alongside Love Like The Galaxy in terms of emotional storytelling and character development.
Overall, Destined is a beautifully written drama with a deeply satisfying emotional arc. It becomes unexpectedly profound once you realize the story is less about “falling in love” and more about two people teaching each other how to live meaningfully in a chaotic world.

A sweet gem
The first thing I will say is that this drama does not have pitiful female characters with uwu baby voices. Our female lead starts off young, but she never has that childish voice. Her life is hard and she has stuff to do. Even the side female characters aren't terribly immature. It's so refreshing to watch a drama where the females aren't infantized.
Second, Bai Jing Ting as the male lead was perfect casting. His playful rich Young Master and serious court official facial expressions were perfect.
The plot/story in the first half had my heart pounding. You never knew who was going to be caught in the chaos. I really felt afraid for the characters.
The chemistry between the two leads was amazing. Even though they only share one one screen kiss, it was a beautiful scene. And you know what? I found myself not even missing kissing scenes. The way they looked at each other, hugged, touched, and spoke to one another was enough. It was such a treat to watch their marriage go from basically a business transmission to a legit marriage.
The side characters weren't too annoying. I was interested in all of their stories.
The plot in the second half turned it from a budding romance to a full fledge palace/fight for the throne drama. I think it was a smooth transmission, but I wish they focused more on the couple falling in love than who gets to sit on the throne.
The villain made sense to me at first, but the he went off the rails. I kinda felt bad for him and then again, dude... It's not and never will be that serious!
I'm giving it a solid 8. The ending was happy and didn't leave us guessing. Great drama!

Peak character growth
When it first dropped, I thought it was gonna be another shitty ML with a tragic backstory and endless crying, so I skipped it. Fast forward two years, I finally gave it a shot and man, this drama made me feel alive. The FL starts off like this elegant, obedient flower. She’s got courage, but she’s too careful to ever step on anyone’s toes. Growing up, she had to protect her mom, so she never really had time to figure out her own dreams and desires. Enter the ML complete opposite vibe. He’s got loving parents, does whatever he wants, and people are straight-up scared of him because of his family’s wealth and power.
Then boom life happens, and they end up married. That’s when things get real. She finally experiences what parental affection feels like, while he’s hit with the realization that life isn’t as carefree as he thought, he’s got some growing up to do. But after that night in Yangzhou, their love just skyrockets. They stick together, ride out the tough times, and learn to lean on each other.
What sets this drama apart for me? The ML is actually watchable, not your typical cold, brooding type who treats the FL like trash before magically changing overnight. Nah, he evolves from this clueless rich kid to a man who’s been through hell but never once disrespects his wife. He does everything he can to protect her. But here’s the twist even though I said he saves her, we see that the FL sacrifices way more for him. She’s got her own shining moments where she’s the one doing the saving.
These two? Peak couple goals. Unity, love, respect all of it. Neither of them ever tries to act superior. They’re equals, partners, ready to lay down their lives for each other if it comes to that.
The only thing that fell flat for me? The supporting characters. Their stories felt dull, sometimes even forced. But honestly, with leads like these, I didn’t even mind.

Strong!
the story was interesting and meaningful. The acting was very good. I liked the strength and simplicity of the FL character. She was smart and no matter the set backs she overcame the obstacles. I also enjoyed the ML step by step becoming more capable. They mutually helped each other, there was no one sided help or protection of the ML which was satisfying. I cried and laughed at different stages. I recommend watching it if you like to see the lead characters' self improvement. The Romance was also well carried out.Was this review helpful to you?
Destined to Be Forever in My Heart
HANDS DOWN ONE OF THE BEST CHINESE DRAMAS EVER!! No dull moments from beginning to the end. This will make you laugh, cry, and bite your nails. You’ll be at the edge of your seat because you don’t know what’s coming. Who will you trust? The friendship here is so good. I love how the FL and ML work together. Bai Jing Ting was so good here. What a great performance! Hoping he’d get more roles like this in the future. I became a fan of him after watching this. The FL was so brave, too. I love it. She wasn’t the typical whiny female character. The ML wasn’t a toxic one, thank goodness. I’m glad Chinese dramas are way better now compared to the crappy ones I’ve watched that bullies the FL. I hate those kind of tropes. This couple was sweet, I loved them so much. I recommend this drama. You will love it just like I did.Was this review helpful to you?
From Promise to Disappointment: Dropped
This is a drop review—commentary on over half the season.I hosted an end-of-year poll rating the best dramas of 2023, and this one was among the winners. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a favorite of mine, and I ended up dropping it around episode 26. While I loved the opening story and narrative, the strong female characterization, the comedic banter and chemistry between the leads, and especially the villain played by Liu Xueyi—who was beautifully layered and morally gray—I felt that by the midpoint, the rich and compelling story began to devolve. The narrative shifted to focus heavily on the main and second male leads, leaving what was supposed to be the female lead’s story in the background.
Of course, these are just my personal impressions of why it didn’t work for me. As I mentioned, it did win a group poll, so I’m simply offering the other side of the coin for this watch.

Not for me.
I'm dropping this. The convoluted premise is just not interesting and Song Yi is not utilized super well.
See, I find she's at her best as a strong confident character, sassiness being appreciated.
Here she just pines and cries all the time.
Like girl, you got arranged-married into a rich family, how awful for you! And your husband even wants to divorce you and give you a ton of money? The horror!
Main dude tries, he's trying so hard I'm surprised he didn't pull a funny muscle in his face. Also his ears are massive.
But yeah, it's just not what I hoped. Definitely not Dream of Splendor, nor Joy of Life/My Heroic Husband.
Pass.

Another annoying and hypocritical female lead
The first three episodes were great as they set up the personalities of the main cast. But unfortunately and yet again as with many of these Chinese series, the female lead drifted off character and became irritating. She is depicted as the sweet and kindhearted victim in her middle-class household. She consistently praises about maintaining etiquette. She marries into a powerful and wealthy family that everyone is afraid to offend, yet she has no problems telling her parent-in-laws that she literally "hates" their son the very next day. It then veers off further into the abyss when despite priding herself as being a proper lady, she barges into the brothel with a gang of workers wielding a large sword in public demanding her husband return home so he can "study books" and pass the imperial exam out of nowhere. Then proceeds to air her "poor me" story to a crowd full of strangers while continually shaming her husband (who has been kind and genuine to her since they've married). Whaaaaat?
These series are so often ruined with these types of female lead characters. I wonder if it's a modern cultural thing where the writers simply have no idea what a capable woman is realistically like? Please go back to creating actual content with substance instead of just visual entertainment with good-looking leads that have average acting abilities. Seasoned and good supporting actors can only carry the main leads so far. My higher scores for dropped series are usually for the supporting cast.

Just not for me
I watched 2 episodes. I didn't find the story entertaining so decided to drop it........ For me it was just boring, I tried few times....The characters and leads were ok just the story didn't appeal to me. Maybe should of been more patient with the story but in the moment just felt didn't want to continue with it.......
Anyways, those watching please enjoy.
Those who want to give it a try, I suggest to give it a few episodes and form an opinion......
I am still open to watching more of these leads in future dramas, this does not change my opinion of them......
