Short Answer to "Should you watch it?"
I see why people are saying season 1 was better and all but season 1 was the prequel for a reason, and season 2 the is part for which they wanted to create for a happy ending which made sense instead or rushing it in the first season. I would say this season was quite fitting as a sequel to the masterpiece which was the first season. Definitely a good watch!I think this was nice form the writers as I would rather they have this season then not and leave the watchers in the dark or even worse make a rushed version in the first season.
As far as my opinion matters I would say its a good watch if you wanna see the great ending the writers concocted. This season was not made to be watched on its own but to be a sequel to the previous one and in that aspect it hit the mark.
Slight heads up! The re-watch rating is not accurate as I personally don't re-watch any shows again so its just done for the sake of the rating so I've given it a fair rating.

(reposting this from my feed, because my dumbass forgot to do that five months ago.)rewatched this show from start to finish again after about eight months after my first encounter with it…i knew it would take a lot of mental strength to get through the first season, considering how big of an impact season two had on me.
— apart from the fact that it is indeed *a bit* long, i resonated so much with go yoon-jung’s interpretation of such a complex, unpredictable & yet strangely loveable persona. jung so-min did amazingly, but it takes so much skill to approach a character that’s already been perceived as one, & turn it into something completely refreshing, & melancholic at the same time.
— reviewing season one as someone who knows the climax of these intertwined fates, was genuinely so much fun. the first part of this story isn’t focused as much on romance as it is on the root of the plot & the explanation of the world we found ourselves to be part of. seeing songrim, jeongjingak, the palace & so many more in a certain warm setting during the first twenty epsodes, & then meeting these spaces all over again—it truly felt like seeing them from a pair of different eyes. bu-yeon’s eyes…yeong’s? mud-eok’s? naksu’s?
— nonetheless, as much as the twisty drama held my attention—i quite literally yearned for the gift we get in the second part of the series. the world was abruptly paused for three years that followed a horrible, heart-wrenching outcome…and we were greeted back inside with naksu’s deer-like, childish & warm gaze.
— yes, she feels different than mud-eok, but i never perceived that as a bad thing. the man born under the king’s star needed a master, a pillar to lean on to as he grew & molded with his potential. but jang uk with the ice stone in his chest needed a partner, a lover, & a safe haven.
— the most important thing in this whole monologue is that her love for him remained the same throughout all numerous identities she shared. every name she had loved him the same. it never wavered, it was one thing never subject to change. if he never cared what her heart looked like on the outside, *why* do you?
anyhow, i loved this whole thing with my whole heart. from the ost, the cast, the chemistry, the visual appeal of it all, to the richness of the storyline & the most gut-wrenching romance known to man—this series made me happy. i’ll forever wish to get a better glimpse at who they came to be outside the ten episodes of the second season. yul? dan-gu & choyeon? maidservant kim’s pregnancy? the future of uk & naksu? i wanted more. i still want more.

What a big disappointment...
I really tried to watch season 2 without prejudice but I just can't anymore....Season 1 is gripping and intriguing, story was woven so tightly together and it keeps you on your toes. I re-watched all 19 and half episode at least three times. However, the writers just decided to prolong the storyline unnecessarily and discard the highlight of the whole production, which is the amazing actress Somin, and drag the show for 10 more episodes, which already been seen with bunches of plot holes, and boring dialogues.... The production team intentionally not mentioning Somin like she is discarded just like her character in the show during interviews and behind the scenes, and the director didn't even mention her name on the award show when he received best director for Alchemy of Souls Season 1. It seems like a dirty game to me! Season 2 is full of forced performances and plot. I am no longer curious about the ending of the show. A Beautiful and Satisfying Conclusion
After finishing *Alchemy of Souls: Light and Shadow*, I can honestly say this is one of the most satisfying conclusions a fantasy drama could have given such a complicated storyline. Considering how many moving pieces the story had to resolve, from soul shifting and hidden identities to family secrets and ancient prophecies, I was impressed by how well everything ultimately came together.I know many viewers had mixed feelings about the female lead change, but personally, I loved it. In fact, I think it made the story even more powerful. Watching Jang Uk fall in love with someone who looked completely different but carried the soul of the woman he never stopped loving added a whole new emotional layer to the romance. His internal conflict felt believable. He wanted to move on, yet he was constantly drawn toward her. The longing, confusion, guilt, and emotional tension between them became one of the strongest aspects of the season.
I also disagree with the criticism that Jin Bu Yeon was simply a passive character. She was just as confused as everyone else. The memories returning to her did not fully feel like her own, and much of her journey revolves around understanding her identity and place in the world. There are far more layers to her character than many viewers give her credit for.
One thing I appreciated was how this season paid off the foundation that Season 1 spent twenty episodes building. While the first season focused heavily on world-building, character introductions, and establishing relationships, Season 2 allows those relationships to fully blossom. The romance between Jang Uk and Naksu finally receives the emotional payoff it deserves. Their relationship is filled with pain, longing, healing, and acceptance, making it one of the most rewarding parts of the drama.
Lee Jae Wook once again delivers an outstanding performance. This version of Jang Uk is very different from the young man we met in Season 1. He is colder, more isolated, and burdened by grief. Yet underneath that hardened exterior remains the same person we grew to love. Watching him slowly heal throughout the season was incredibly satisfying.
Go Youn Jung also deserves praise for stepping into such a difficult role. Replacing a beloved actress is never easy, but she made the character her own while still preserving the essence of who Naksu was. By the end of the season, I was fully invested in her portrayal.
Another aspect I loved was the friendships. Just like in Season 1, the drama avoids unnecessary betrayals and jealousy. Instead, it focuses on loyalty, trust, and genuine affection between friends. It was refreshing to watch characters consistently support one another rather than constantly creating conflict for the sake of drama.
The shorter ten-episode format worked surprisingly well. Unlike the first season, which occasionally struggled with pacing, this season feels more focused and direct. Every episode pushes the story forward while gradually answering the mysteries and questions left behind by Season 1.
I was also very satisfied with how the writers resolved the complicated situation involving Naksu, Mu Deok, and Jin Bu Yeon's identities. Given how confusing the soul and body-switching mechanics could become, I was worried the explanation would feel messy or incomplete. Instead, the drama managed to tie everything together in a way that felt emotionally satisfying and surprisingly easy to follow.
Visually, the series remains stunning. The cinematography, costumes, special effects, and soundtrack continue to create a magical atmosphere that perfectly complements the story's emotional moments.
Looking back, I believe splitting the story into two seasons was the correct decision. Part of that was likely due to production realities and the actress transition, but from a storytelling perspective it also allowed the romance, world-building, and character arcs enough room to breathe. Trying to fit everything into a single season would likely have made the story feel rushed.
Overall, Alchemy of Souls: Light and Shadow delivers exactly what a final season should. It answers important questions, resolves character arcs, strengthens the emotional core of the story, and gives viewers a rewarding conclusion. It may not be perfect, but for a fantasy drama built on such a complex foundation, I honestly could not have asked for a better ending.

NGL This is one of the best BEST EPIC K-DRAMA I have watched till now!!! 👍 From the story and the characters (initial to finish) was just a wonderful adventure for me. The story is just that great with the background settings and visual effects. The fighting scenes are epic 🔥🔥🔥 The dialogue and the characters are truly magical. The stunning leads and their love chemistry was just mouth watering 😌 The various obstacles they faced together from start to finish was the epic. Loved the bromance and the friendship between the characters and the love story of the side characters was also a delight to watch. Overall 10/10 for me. This K-Drama is an epic blockbuster. EXCELLENT STORY! LOVE IT SO MUCH!
I love it. I was in tears for several episodes of season 2, but I was smiling widely by the end. The ending is perfect. Thanks to these casts who gave us a happy ending to this drama.I highly praise all the actors/actresses for their superb acting! Jang UK, is amazing, handsome and attractive. Naksu/Jin Bu Yeon/Cho Yeong, is beautiful and suitable for her role. I don't expect her to act and fight as an assassin anymore, because she is now residing in JBY body. I really enjoyed Seo Yul's acting awesome, handsome and I am so happy that he survived. I really adore the cutest couples of Dang Gu and Cho Yeon / Park Jin and Kim Do Ju. I am so happy for Mama Jin Ho Kyung's beautiful smile. I am proud of the crown prince Go Won who cares the lovely turtle. I was impressed with the overall production: the cinematography, animation and the more details. Well done! This drama of AOS2 deserves best ratings.

Wow!
I just finished and omg I feel so OVERWHELMED in a good way. I remember watching it when it first came out and now it's done.The chemistry between the two actresses with Jang Uk is so cute and sweet. I love how they didn't like force Naksu’s character to fit Mu Deok’s personality. I like that they have their way of communicating and traits.
Not gonna lie... I somewhat forgot what happened in the first season, so I get confused about the second part but Overalls, I love it. Haha.
I love the chemistry of the characters especially the Prince with Jang Uk, they're so SWEET AAHAH.
But. Yay. I'm done. The ending tho. Wtf what does that mean? UGH ANOTHER CLIFFHANGER 🥲🥲.

Hong Sisters' greatest ambition that turns into their greatest masterpiece.
Alchemy of Souls is Hong Sisters greatest ambition that turns into their greatest masterpiece. Not only their ambition to create a completely new fantasy world, but also their ambition to finnaly create a happy and satisfying ending, as well as their ambition to finally create a proper romance that everyone roots for.When part 1 focuses on the world building and character development, part 2 focuses on the relationship & redemption. It may lack of plot excitement from part 1, but the way part 2 put all answers and resolutions for all AoS characters is so damn good and satisfying.
I must say that the love story created for part 2 is really one of the best in the whole KDrama history. This is what I call perfect redemption of Hong Sisters romance writing skill. I find their romance writing is somehow lacking in their previous works, I don't find such strong chemistry and relationship development in HDL or Korean Odyssey (both romance seems quite forced). But AoS is clearly the whole different level, and Hong Sis ambition to create the most beautiful love story finally comes true.
Just like Master Lee said, I've seen plenty of drama couple, but Jang Uk and Cho Yeong are the dearest. You can't find love so deep, so meaningful and so desperate in any other drama.
I bet that's also in Hong Sisters mind, Ukyeong is their dearest couple that's why they give them happy ending. 😁😁

Other characters too, finally they find their true meaning of life. One of my favorite character development is Seo Yul, the one who finally dare to move beyond his boundary, taking a role to bring better change to the world just like what his predecessor did in the past. Something that Jang Uk might never did, because his life is basically all about Cho Yeong 😂. Also for Go Won, I can't say anything else, he deserves what he gets and for his kind heart, I trust Daeho will be peaceful for a long long time. I couldn't be more happy for Jinni and Yeonni. Even I put lots of respect for Jin Hogyeong. Can't forget about how sad and beautiful So'i stroy too. I can't forget about how cool Park Danggu, Choyeon, and also Sangho, even Juwol. All I can say is that I root for almost all characters in AoS. That's how amazing it is. The last time I feel like that is only in Scarlet Heart.
The acting is superb and top notch (all characters acting skill is improved a lot in part 2 compared to part 1), the music and OSTs are so amazing. I will miss all AoS background music, especially the intro and jinyowon theme, and also Jang Uk theme.
The happy ending also makes the rewatch value increases.
In conclusion, AoS part 2 is in the same tier as part 1 even tho they have different charms. Both are among best fantasy KDrama of all time. Currently it is my #1 fantasy Kdrama. I definitely recommend it for anyone who loves fantasy because this drama really set the standard so high.

I need to say this drama was just SO GOOD!! the actors, the story, their chemistry, the places, the editing!! EVERYTHING WAS JUST SO GOOD!! especially jang uk and cho yeong are SOULMATES. lee jae wook and go younjung both did a good job portraying their characters. lee jae-wook showed his acting in this drama and go younjung did a good job portraying 5 characters. both had such a good chemistry on screen and of screen! *Walks out nervously* I enjoyed Season 2 more than Season 1.Story
In a way this was a continuation of S1 but also a different story. This is a great example (for me) of why the multi season arch can really work in the drama space. As with Dr Romantic, which had 3 seasons and I would love a 4th, there is something comforting about knowing the characters and seeing them grow beyond the 10 to 16 episode lifeline. In this season we get the very satisfying badass version of Jang Uk right from E1. The joy that I felt from watching him in the first scene was euphoric. His brooding was not only deserved but was the perfect amount. The person you loved literally killed you. Go sit with the rocks my little emo man. But also, can we talk about those steamy scenes when he finally gives in to being 'crazy' with Bu Yeon?! The lantern?! I need the other romance dramas to take note! Loved the play on soul shifting with Naksu/Cho Yeong/Jin Bu Yeon. It kept things moving along but played with the gray molarity of the characters as they find or, or helped. Again, having more time with the characters gives you the ability to see how the previous actions butterfly affect to their decisions later on.
Acting/Cast
I'm ready for the pitchforks that will come out with my next statement. I'm saying this with my full chest. Go Youn Jung was perfectly casted for this role. She brought about an ethereal lightness to the character. I loved So Min in Season 1 but for the story to play out, they needed someone else. Ideally it would have been the actress who originally portrayed Bu Yeon but whatever. In my S1 review I shouted out the Prince and Seo Yul but I forgot about Mr Dang Gu! He was fantastic in both seasons but also had a bigger role in S2, which I appreciated. To be fair, this cast is loaded with so many actors that I've seen in other roles that I respect (Seo Hye Won, my English/Korean queen from Business Proposal and Lovely Runner, I see you!)

The best korean drama i watch in 2024 so far
At the first time, i planned not to watched it because i don’t like watching drama with more than one season, but i’m not regretted watching this one. It just come to my mind and it still coming on my feeds, so i try to watch it. This is my first ml and fl drama i watched, and their acting was excellent in both season, it took me just 3 days to finish both season. Thas was excellent story that makes can’t believed i missed the hype of this good drama. You guys should try to watch it! It was the best!Was this review helpful to you?
