The Rise and Fall of My Expectations

I picked up Love Beyond the Grave out of pure curiosity rather than genuine interest in its premise. The pairing of Dilraba Dilmurat and Chen Fei Yu sounded intriguing on paper, almost like a “what if” experiment you don’t quite trust but still want to see unfold. The story introduces us to He Si Mu, a sovereign Ghost King who has lived through centuries, and Duan Xu, a young general whose presence immediately feels suspicious. Their initial encounters carry a quiet tension, like a chess match where both players are pretending not to know the rules. There is curiosity, restraint, and a hint of danger. For a moment, it feels like the drama knows exactly what it is doing.

Unfortunately, that sense of intrigue fades too quickly. The mystery surrounding both characters is revealed early on, cutting off what could have been the drama’s strongest hook. Once the “who are you really” question is answered, the story struggles to replace it with anything equally compelling. What follows is a sequence of events that feels oddly stitched together: mortal world meetings, battlefield clashes, a detour into the void, separations, reunions, and then more separations for good measure. It reads like a grand epic on paper, but in execution, it lacks emotional weight. I kept waiting for a moment that would anchor me, but it never quite arrived.

One of the more unique elements is Si Mu’s inability to experience human senses and her reliance on Duan Xu to “borrow” them. The early arc where she experiences touch is genuinely charming. There is a childlike wonder in the way she reacts, and it gives Dilraba room to show both elegance and vulnerability. But as the story moves on to other senses, the magic wears thin. The arcs become shorter, less impactful, and sometimes feel like filler. The logic also raises questions. For someone who has never smelled anything, Si Mu somehow identifies scents with surprising confidence. And when Duan Xu loses a sense temporarily, the rules seem flexible at best. It is one of those “don’t think too hard” situations, except the drama quietly invites you to think about it anyway.

The worldbuilding adds another layer of confusion. Spirits, demons, and supernatural events appear frequently in the mortal realm, yet the humans barely react. It creates a strange disconnect, like watching a fantasy unfold in a world that refuses to acknowledge it. I kept wondering if I had missed an explanation somewhere, but the drama never really addresses it. Instead, it moves forward as if everything makes perfect sense.

If there is one aspect that genuinely impressed me, it is the early battle sequences. After the rather underwhelming action in Pursuit of Jade, this drama delivers a battlefield that feels alive. The scale, the smoke, the chaos, even the background soldiers all contribute to a sense of realism that is rarely seen. Chen Fei Yu shines the most in these moments. He throws himself into the action without hesitation, unafraid to look battered and raw. There is a particular infiltration scene that stands out as one of his best moments in the drama. Ironically, as the story shifts its focus toward romance, this sharp and compelling side of his character slowly fades.

Duan Xu as a character suffers from inconsistent writing. He starts off as a cautious and capable general, someone grounded by duty and suspicion. Then, almost overnight, he transforms into a lovestruck figure whose decisions revolve entirely around Si Mu. His transition feels abrupt, like a switch flipped without warning. The drama tries to sell his devotion as romantic, but it often comes across as excessive and, at times, awkward. It does not help that his role as a general becomes increasingly sidelined, stripping away the authority and presence he initially had.

He Si Mu, on the other hand, remains one of the more consistent characters. She carries herself with quiet authority, balancing power with an undercurrent of loneliness. Dilraba portrays her with a convincing mix of restraint and curiosity, especially during moments where Si Mu experiences the world in new ways. Visually, she fits the role of a ghostly sovereign almost too well. There is an ethereal quality to her presence that makes her feel distant, almost untouchable. Ironically, this works against the central romance. When paired with Chen Fei Yu, the gap between them feels more pronounced, not just in characterization but in overall aura. It becomes difficult to see them as equals within the same emotional space.

Chemistry is, unfortunately, another weak point. Despite the narrative insisting on their deep bond, I struggled to feel it. Their interactions often lean into forced intimacy rather than something that grows naturally. Oddly enough, Si Mu’s brief dynamic with Xue Chen Ying, played by Fu Bo Han, feels more genuine. There is a warmth and simplicity in those moments that the main pairing never quite achieves.

Then there is Yan Ke, played by Wei Zhe Ming, who initially steals the spotlight. His introduction is magnetic, with a commanding presence that perfectly complements his role as Si Mu’s right hand. The way he looks at her says everything without needing dialogue, and for a while, it feels like the drama is quietly setting up something more compelling than the main romance. But as the story progresses, his character leans heavily into obsessive territory, losing the balance that made him interesting in the first place.

Visually, the drama is a mixed experience. It leans into a gothic, eerie aesthetic that suits its premise, and some elements, like the void, look surprisingly majestic. The battlefield effects are particularly well done. However, other CGI moments feel dated and overly noticeable, pulling you out of the immersion. The purple jellyfish-like creatures, while unique, end up being more distracting than meaningful.

The music follows a similar pattern. The opening feels underwhelming, lacking a strong identity, while the ending themes and OSTs are far more memorable. They do a good job of enhancing the mood, even when the story itself falls short.

By the time I reached the end, the outcome felt predictable. Given the title alone, a fully happy ending would have been wishful thinking. Still, knowing what to expect does not necessarily make the journey more satisfying. In this case, it simply reinforces the sense that the story was always heading somewhere I was not emotionally invested in.

In the end, Love Beyond the Grave became one of those dramas I finished out of obligation rather than enjoyment. It has moments of brilliance, particularly in its action and initial character setups, but they are overshadowed by inconsistent writing, weak emotional grounding, and a romance that never quite convinces. I stayed until the final episode, though I am still not entirely sure why.

Slowburn Romance of a Happy Ending

Truth to be told, I'm still at the 9th ep of the drama, and so far—I'm obsessed with it!

I'm not saying this out of my admiration for Reba or anything —but solely, as a casual viewer and a beginner chiness drama enthusiast. Seriously, the production have surely hefty amount of budget filming throughout the whole series. The cinematography alone is topnotch. Not to add, the amount of visually striking outfits of the female lead. She looked undeniably magnetic through the screen.

As for the acting dept, I can see that there's countless room of improvement. However, that doesn't equate to bad performance at all. It's just that based on my observation (while reading the book and watching the live action adaptation), I feel like the characters in the drama got a some restraints. You see, in the original novel, each characters were described so vividly that it felt like they're right in front of your face doing the act. Yet the drama only managed to cover a little bit of expression.

To sum it up, Reba did a great job in her portrayal as He Simu.

I love it!!!

The storyline is refreshing, different, and beautifully executed. It doesn’t rely on the usual clichés, which makes every episode feel intentional and meaningful. The pacing is slow, but in a way that allows you to truly connect with the characters and absorb the emotions behind each scene. It may require a bit of patience, but it is definitely worth it in the end.
The casting is absolutely top-notch. Every actor fits their role so naturally that it feels like the characters were written specifically for them. There is a strong sense of chemistry among the cast, and it elevates the entire viewing experience.
The female lead completely nailed her role. She brought depth, grace, and emotional intensity to her character effortlessly. Beyond her acting, her appearance is truly otherworldly, there’s a rare, ethereal beauty about her that makes every scene she’s in even more captivating. Her expressions, body language, and delivery were all on point, making her performance both striking and unforgettable. Dilraba outdid herself here!
Arthur Chen is the perfect lover boy. He carries his role with such charm, warmth, and sincerity that it’s hard not to be drawn to him. His performance feels effortless yet impactful, and he brings a soft, genuine energy that balances the story beautifully. The emotional connection he builds with the female lead is believable and heartwarming.
Overall, this drama stands out for its unique storytelling, strong performances, and emotional depth. It’s not just something you watch, it’s something you experience.

good drama

This is a really good show the characters relationships development is really interesting healthy and unique many of the tropes you see an Asian dramas that are usually not well written this is not one of them this is well written fun the the main couple enjoy each other's company that many other dramas show it as a not pleasurable for one of the parties that is participating in the action the sets are beautiful and costumes are beautiful it has a beauty and the beast theme where the female is the beast and the male is the beauty as a slight Gomez and Morticia feel to it they're romance that doesn't you don't see very often in Asian dramas or American

A must-watch masterpiece

When I first saw the trailer, it already seemed like it was going to be a great drama, I didn't expect it to be THIS good!!

This drama is hauntingly beautiful. There are many shows about romance between a human and a supernatural being, but this one is unique because the female lead is the super powerful being who dominates the male lead. In fact, there are many instances of gender role reversals in this period drama. And besides the usual fight between good and evil, the show also tells a very human and healing story -- the two trade the 5 senses, discover the beauty of their respective worlds through each other, and find out what it means to really be "alive".

The sense exchange is depicted very creatively and intelligently, because you can imagine it'd be quite a challenge to convey the sense of smell, taste and touch to audiences through the screen. This is often done through clever use of CGI, colour grading and a focus on ordinary things in life that we may overlook, like the taste and smell of raindrops, texture of skin etc. The overall story is very unconventional and heartfelt, and gives you alot to think about.

I was skeptical about the main pairing initially, but I was surprised how Dilraba and Chen Feiyu have sizzling chemistry both on and off screen. Their acting skills are also equally matched, there were several scenes where I got goosebumps watching them act. In fact, the entire cast gave incredible performances. Although 90% of the story is centered on the two leads, it helped that the writers did not neglect in giving interesting character development for the side characters too.

Overall, the drama showed consistently high quality in terms of storytelling, directing, pacing, cinematography and OST. Almost every episode had a standout scene. Episode 8 especially was absolute cinema that blew my mind. Except for a couple of episodes in the middle where the drama seemed to lose its steam a little, it quickly picked up the pace and tension again. This drama constantly left me on the edge of my seat, squealing with joy and moved me to tears. Unfortunately, I feel my words don't do justice to just how good this drama is. I do love this drama very much and I hope more people will appreciate this gem too.

Best Xianxia drama of the year (2026)

This concept of exchanging the five senses feels new and refreshing among the xianxia dramas I've watched. The unique storyline, which involves a predestined relationship between spirits and mortals, really piques my interest. Especially with the dominance of FL, I feel like this year is one where women dominate the male field. From UJ to LBTG, these dramas continue to showcase strong women without having to disguise themselves in men's clothing. I appreciate it!

The last 5 ep tho... my eyes hurt now from crying so much earlier. Especially when He Simu, who was left by Duan Xu, ached to the point of being choked up. Her cries of not wanting to be left felt painful. Their wedding, which I had been waiting for and imagining with smile and joy, was filled with tears.

The two individuals who initially only had hidden intentions, turned out to be bound and compatible with each other, then fell in love with each other but had to separate because their different worlds drew me into their world so that I smiled widely like an idiot seeing Duan Xu seeking He Simu's attention, getting irritated every time Yan Ke appeared on screen, crying when they suffered. Like, my emotions are going up and down because of them

The costumes were beautiful, the ost are so good especially the singer when i hear his voice i know it's my fav (Zhou Shen). The cinematography was stunning, I was also happy when I found familiar faces in the supporting characters such as the actors who played Jang Ai, Yan Ke, Mai Zi, Han Ling Qiu and Duke Pei.

Beautiful Unique Love story

The story is unique and I really like it. It evolves around the unequal and very different lonely souls. Both yerned for love and both had fear in relationship.
The ghost queen afraid of the departing of the one she loved so she afraid to love. The mortal afraid of loosing the important in the heart of his beloved, so he cling and sacifice everything including his life.
You can understand both He Simu and Duan Xu. Both actors/actress did a good job conveying this relationship and it is beautiful. The music, the CG and costume are all great. All of the other actor/actress did well. The story is believable and cause you to think.

I had gone through all negative reviews, and was expecting the worst

Chinese dramas usually have the same issue- unrealistic storylines, with over exaggeration and rushed romance at the end.

Which means...
We are used to it, do not really take it as a negative, but more of a "we cannot change it". That's the Chinese style.

Saying that, the reviews that said the plot is crazy and that the FLs actions and past doesn't make sense, THEY DO.
From episode 1 we say the FL isa "bad" woman, however she does help a man, saves his kid (twice) and makes him happy with "magic tricks". That's her. Supposed to be mean, but knows wrong from right. It only gets better from there.

One negative issue I have is the ML doesn't suit the role, great as an actor but not as the ML here (personal opinion, does anyone else agree?)

ITS SO GOOD!!

I actually love love love this show! Literally everything is perfect, and you can clearly tell the production put in alot of effort into it. The effects are gorgeous and the OST/music fits the drama soo well! Especially in episode 4! I love Dilraba’s acting and Hesimu’s personality and authority in the show. Their costumes are also very pretty! Dilraba did such an amazing job in this show! Currently on the newest episode! Can’t wait for the more episodes to be released.

Nice Idea with poor execution

Love beyond the Grave is a drama that you want to stay in the grave. The story is about cougar Goddess who tries to have fun in the mortal world and gets attracted to a young lad who is following her like slutpuppy everywhere. This was at least what I saw until ep 20, i can't endure more even though Dilraba is amazing actress and stunningly beautiful. The plot was developing in such a slow paste I was forcing my eyes open at some scenes. What I see in last year and in 2026 is that these 40 episode dramas are unnecessary stretched and the side plots and characters are just boring filler material.
