Not my cup of tea!!
This drama is about the love between a mortal general, who had a rough past as an assasin and the Lord of Spirits who is 400year old.Duan Xu, played by Arthur Chen is revealed to be the spell bearer of He Simu, played by Diliraba, who can get her five senses through him and hence starts a love story of a spirit and a mortal.
The first 10 episodes seemed quite interesting and though it started becoming less interesting, still I managed to watch it. But after the arc where Duan Xu, our male lead enters the spirit realm, I somehow completely lost interest. I didn't find any interesting elements that would make you stay or make you wait for the next episodes eagerly.
When it reached episodes 25-26, I felt myself completely bored.
With no solid storyline, no progress as it proceeds further, not so well developed romance track(which was not at all entertaining for me)., I think this drama has disappointed me.
The only saving graces are the beautifully designed costumes, especially for the people in the spirit realm and the lavish sets that are my only reason to watch this far.
The acting of the actors was perfect.
But the characters they play didnt make me stay.
Personally I couldn't bring myself to like He simu's actions or character and as for Duan Xu, his character went downhill after few episodes.
Personally, its not my cup of tea or maybe I failed to understand the dynamics, but I lost interest in it.
Anyways, the first 16 episodes were good, imho.
This review is purely my opinion.

Lackluster romance
Dilraba effortlessly embodies the role of He Simu, a sovereign spirit. Her visuals are truly stunning. However, I ended up dropping the drama. I went in expecting a darker, more serious storyline, largely because the trailers felt very intense and heavy. It feels misleading when the actual show turns out to be overly cute and lighthearted. While her character is meant to be ignorant of 5 senses, portraying her as excessively childish—reacting to basic things like a child given a grand toy when she is given some senses in a period of time—doesn't quite fit the narrative.
There was potential for powerful scenes, such as the moment she is repeatedly stabbed by puppets. It could have been a raw, painful experience, especially since it was her first time feeling pain. Instead, she handled it too easily, which felt very underwhelming. It seems the production focused too much on aesthetics and looking pretty, to the point where the emotional impact was lost. Being visually beautiful means nothing if the scenes don't make you feel what you are supposed to feel.
And let us not even mention the romance—it is easily the laziest and most boring I have ever encountered in a C-drama. Their feelings seemed to develop simply because they are the main leads, not because of any genuine connection. It felt rushed and shallow, lacking any real depth. Furthermore, the scene where the male lead kisses the drunk He simu without consent, when they aren't even in a relationship, was the final straw for me. That was unacceptable and the reason I had to stop watching.
In conclusion, the visuals, cinematography, and OST are excellent. But the execution and the romance leave much to be desired. I cannot speak much for the overall plot since I dropped it early on.

LBTG: inspiring mysterious world but it falls flat fast
I just started the first episodes and so many great things to say! but in 3 words: intruiguing & great vibes! 🔥THE WORLD OF LBTG:
I love this fictional setting! i almost want to call it whimsical but it would take away the depth of the characters... its eerie but just enough, it's witchy but just enough. I can feel the direction is really controlling the vibe depending on the scenes and we already have great symbolism of elements: the tree, flowers, birds, colours, wind, cold....etc. We do see lots of death , the show puts it at quite a distance from the viewer so far...
I am waiting to see the world unleash to another level at some point! The ost is really helping here ! and also Dilraba's acting!
STORY+ ACTING:
I'm loving the main leads, and although it takes a few episodes to pick up the pace but the story and journey looks so fun and interesting! First episodes are making way for an exciting complicity between the leads
DIRECTING:
i realize that directing makes a huge different in the success of a show, knowing it's also the director of lost you forever, we can see the humour style and the boldness of characters give way to an enjoyable journey. i'm definitely tuning in!
It doesn't feel larger than life kind of story, because i think they really nailed the spirit sovereign character with what she does and how her boundaries are so far. i'm waiting to see the other details of the male lead side! It may evolve further but i appreciate that the story is focused so far.
i also love the OST so far it's exactly how i'd imagined this world would be! and the cinematography quality!
OK BUT THEN WHAT?
UPDATE: the story was underwhelming halfway through. i really wanted to like it!!
I know some people had read the novel, i didn't. So I wasn't gonna project the grandeur of the story beyond what the show is giving us. aside from Simu, everyone looks too theatrical Ml is also aloof, and the arcs feel brushed off... i didn't keep watching until the separation arc, maybe tension built there...

Costume drama is the best
I love this wuxia drama—the visuals are great, the story is great, and the acting and chemistry are great too.Usually, wuxia and fantasy dramas aren’t that enjoyable to watch because the visuals are poor, but if you like the wuxia and fantasy genres, this drama is definitely worth watching.
Enjoy the show!

The premise is intriguing with He Si Mu in the power position as the head of all spirits, toying with a human general and then falling in love with him.
But, that's the only intriguing thing about it. There doesn't seem to be much overarching plot or themes. On the acting, I don't buy that Arthur Chen is a general who has killed 100s of people, I don't see any chemistry between the two main leads. The cinematics and aesthetics are a bit off putting and ugly.
I really wanted something to watch so I was forcing myself to give this a try, but it's really not worth it. I'm dropping.

Pretty show, but severely lacks depth
This is the first time, or one of very few times, I've ever wanted to seek out "haters" leaving bad reviews on a show so I can feel justified in my dissapointment with this series.7 eps in, I thought the show was complete ass. Nothing was grabbing my attention and l wasn't really buying Arthur in his role at all, he wasn't selling the general character. Also he had absolutely zero chemistry with Dilraba, like he just felt too young/boyish for her. It's probably less of an issue with Arthur and more the dynamic between Duan Xu and Si Mu as determined by the writer themselves. I just don't think the boyish/innocent/puppy ML personality type works well with that of an all-powerful/detached/400+ years life experienced FL.
Also, there's this thing that Arthur does with his smile...idk, it has always bothered me in every drama I've seen of his where he basically has this fake/awkward looking smile or smirk. And at this point I have to believe its an acting issue, because it's prevalent in every single role I've seen him play.
I hung in there until Ep 17 and the show still was not doing shit for me. The plot is seriously non-existent. It doesn't feel like the characters even care about their roles/jobs. FL is so powerful but seems incompetent or just too bored about the fact she's a freaking Sovereign of all spirits and the fate of the world rests on her shoulders, but she doesn't move like she's got shit to do, so the drama just comes across as unserious, like the plot is not really serving a purpose for actual story telling and is just background for the romance to progress.
Anyway, dropped at 17 eps. Not feeling any chemistry or interest to keep going.

I tried. It failed.
Pretty privilege is real. I watched this all because Dilireba is so pretty. (Chen Feiyu, on the other hand, somehow, gives me all the icks because of how much he looks like Wu Yifan. Their looks are popular, I guess. Reading his and his family's dramas doesn't help either.)Back to Dilireba, because she's so pretty, deep down, I really wanted her to have a decent acting project. And...
1. The good:
- The cinematography.
- The set designs.
- The costumes.
- Feng Yi. Yes, the acting is so-so. But his character stood out to me. I found myself looking forward to his scenes. I even read parts of the novels with him in it.
- Liu Yuning's song. And that "Ai Cunzai" douyin from Dilireba.
- I discovered the online community (and discourses) of Chinese drama viewers! It's full of dramas. So many new words and jargon. The majority of the fans are blindly diehard. Most of the anti fans are beyond foul-mouthed and toxic. Constant data reporting, ranking, comparing, glazing, keyboard fighting, dragging, and juvenille competing. I love being a spectator to all of it!
2. The bad:
- One-dimensional Wei Zhe Ming. Why they love to cast him or give him projects where he plays the obsessive but one-track minded male character is beyond me. He could have played a decent, motivated villain that ultimately fell from grace. But nope, commercialised dramas are lazy.
- Another Mary Sue x Gary Sue that left me wanting to root for no one, but an imaginary villain/ess. Stereotypical Dilireba.
- It gets progressively worse as I've seen from online reactions.
3. The ugly:
- The acting. My God.
As long as Dilireba continues with one-dimensional, flower vase, Mary Sue projects like this, she'll never be known for anything but her looks. Maybe that's what she aims for.
Chen Feiyu's acting is mostly neck-to-neck with Dilireba: superficial and cringy. I always expect nothing from a typical idol-drama OP "military general" because I'm always given nothing. Wait, I had a few chuckles reading comments saying how bad-ass and genius his fight scenes in episode 7 or 8 were. I like how we all have different perspectives.
- The plot and the characterisation. Yikes.
Maybe this is the reason why the acting is so bad because the plot and the characters have nothing going on. Maybe both Dilireba and Chen Feiyu aced their performances based on the script they were given.
I found it most amusing that fans of Dilireba, Chen Feiyu and the series went on great lengths to write and explain the plot, the characters, the symbolism, the set designs, etc. Only to prove how badly this series failed to delivery any of those aspects.
Conclusion: Empty eyecandy.

great concept that was a bit lacking...
this drama started off very slow paced for me, at first I didn't like how the FL was very cold "although it is only fitting to her character yet I didn't like it " and how ML was so mysterious and you couldn't tell if he was a good or bad character yet after the episode when she saved him and the made a pact to exchange 5 sense it became better .overall this was a well balanced drama they didn't drag out one arc on the expense of the other yet sometimes the story was rushed , here are some parts of what i am talking about :the love story that was starting to develop between jingyuan and fang ji , fang ji's death ( what kind of death was that😅) , yan ke killing simu's father we only got to see it in a flashback , Jiang ai and bai sang xing backstory what made them hate yet love each other?, yan ke trying to kill simu and threatening to do so yet when he had the chance he didn't, I am confused wasn't power his obsession, did he really love her ? to me it was an obsession all along .
that being said it was a great love story, him willing to sacrifice his life to give her his 5 sense and her giving up her spiritual power to become mortal and be with him.
loved the extra episode it would have been devastating to end with him dying and her being alone all over again.
still a great drama although it lacked depth and was rushed at some points.

One of the Best Fantasy Romances in a Long Time!!
It is a blessing if you find someone who loves you selflessly, without any expectations!!The story leans more towards self discovery rather than just romance. Two individuals from different walks of life meet, connect with each other, face impossible situations and ultimately fall in love. One is a mortal, whilst the other is a spirit. The chances of them falling in love is a rarity. Starring Dilraba Dilmurat & Arthur Chen in lead roles, “Love beyond the Grave” is a love story that challenges time, tide and extends beyond that. Dilraba stars in never-seen-before role, as the Sovereign of Spirits; rather cold hearted and ruthless, she rules the Void with an iron fist. Arthus stars as Duan Xu, a young general who is trying to find his standing, so he can win over the territories seized by their enemy empire. They meet under unexpected circumstances and gravitate towards each other. Their romance is fraught with struggles, yearning and absolute longing.

Unfortunate time to release
Love Beyond the Grave released at unfortunate time....right after Pursuit of Jade, but along side with Veil of Shadow despite to be fair different categories. The most unfortunately part PoJ and VoS has 2 things that lacked in LBtG, better writing of plot & characters. Tho' LBtG bring better war & fight scenes compare PoJ, more realistic....I won't bother to compare with VoS fight scenes because that different level fight cinematography. The biggest problem with LBtG was the writing, it made the story plot feels choppy and lacked characters development. The acting great, each everyone did awesome.....especially Miles Wei, I was worried about Arthur's stiff acting, but he actually did okay. At least now we know for sure that Reba's great in fantasy drama as bad@ss. The music is very.....jarring, sometimes not quite fitting. Was this review helpful to you?
planning to watch this drama?
The CGI looks decent, but the story is a mess. The plot feels very weak and the direction is poor. The main leads fall in love too fast without reason. Their romance feels like lacks of real emotional spark.
Supporting characters are useless and confusing not sure why they are here. This drama just about to uses famous actors/actress just to bait fans. Just watch 3 episode you will feel the same.
Not going to waste my time further to watch this.

Nothing special
The story could have been interesting but somehow its very blant and really nothing new. Another show that caters to a certain group of viewers. The entire senses storyline could have been interesting but its just really weird. Its supposed to be a major part of the story but the executing is sloppy and dragged out. Please stop making 40 ep dramas when you have to fill it with nonsense to meet the episode mark!!!The acting is okay on all fronts - not good but also not bad. Sometimes they made me cringe but I guess thats the poor writing.
The writing..... I know its based on a novel but damn do they only have the overly powerful FL and bootlicking ML novels left?
Can we for once have a normal show with equals? The ML insantly falling for the FL for no reason at all is overdone and stupid.
The characters are very bland - FL doing nothing and sometimes interfering with stuff but at the end of the day it really doesnt matter if she is there or not.
ML starting off as a strong character but turns smitten and kinda dumb really quick.
Cinematography and sets....... the "outside" sets are so bad like the graveyard.... you could tell those stones are styrofoam and everything looked so fake and plastic.
CGI is very special in this one either its off the charts good or so bad that it is actually ridiculous. FL entrance in ep 1 with the Jellyfish looked like high quality but everything after that was laughable - her doing magic looked like a shitty version of elsa but the worst part are the broom scenes - you can literally tell where the ropes are attached in every shot. And they didnt even felt the need to blend it with the background. Literally looks like she is sitting infront of a picture.....
Also that type of makeup doesnt really suit Reba. But in all her recent shows she has locked off. Doesnt look like the Reba I swooned for.
Lastly even tho I watched 10 episodes the chemistry was only okay and not that great. For some reason they dont look very good together. The entire thing isnt romantic at all - this weird ass toxic tsundere type of shit needs to stop.
