historical to idol drama speedrun
this is just my personal opinions im not forcing you to agree with me but I have to say im not a hater I genuinely do like this drama but it feels so chopped lowkeythe start was okay for me I didn’t care about cliches when the vibe was giving but when they developed I just found myself skipping because there were no more vibes
personally don’t attack me for this but it feels like for those who enjoy xianxia romance,I don’t get the chemistry at all the only chemistry I ever saw were from the bath scenes
the shows title had so much potential like Mulan which personally should’ve fit LOTFG more than this show itself but they just decided to point the gun at themselves instead
in most dramas that are centred around this kind the romance is most likely just a sub plot but for LOTFG it felt like they were just shoving it down onto me now personally I didn’t read the novel before but from what I see—they screwed up Chu Zhao like REAL bad full ahh reflex angle type of reverse
I never really liked Chu Zhao when he first appeared his character could’ve been so much more but poor man was reduced to a 2nd male lead hopelessly in love with female lead, sighh
I found it weird as how he Yan always getting saved by shifu or xiao jue like isn’t she supposed to be a strong general who dominates male fields in ancient misogynistic China and plus her personality was funny at first but for a person going undercover for revenge she’s kinda sloppy at it.
I like revenge plots but this show’s romance was chocking me so much I genuinely forgot what heyan’s objective was for a while
one thing I like about heyan and Xiao jue was that heyan has been a shadow of someone else never truly herself the mask has always been there whether physically or mentally but xiao jue doesn’t want to see the facade he wants to see the behind the scenes
I personally found myself crying over Mu hongjun x Liu buwang’s story and death lmao
I don’t find anything in cheng lisu or song taotao’s character I don’t feel any emotional depth over their relationship or character it just feels so main lead centred sometimes like I get their the main characters but can I please just watch the side characters more
The fight scenes feel so main lead centred like they get the spotlights but it doesn’t feel like an actual war—it just feels like a performance the vibe doesn’t vibe with me and most people are just eating it up for some reason
Very hot take but this show feels so glazed personally,is it just because yall like xianxia type of romance?
anyway im not hating I just found very little emotional depth in it that resonates with me
Edits:I made this review yesterday night instead of studying for my science test big mistake (very idiotic anyway) I wasn’t able to fully grasp all of my personal perceptions of this show enough from my previous rants so here we go again!Dont take any review from me seriously i just want entertainment which LOTFG has failed me
ill start off with basics and I’ll be straightforward so woosh,i did not read the novel as if it wasn’t already stated before. This show is overrated by the hype,it’s very glazed.I don’t have high expectations but how do you even mess up this bad.Compared to other dramas such as A Journey To Love,My Journey To You and Wonderland Of Love I am easily in love with strong martial artist women but wtf is this?Such cheap goon-romance bait like I lowkey do not for one care if you watch cdramas just to goon to hot actors but seriously?calling this “good” ? it’s like a baby compared to other wuxia romances
Genres are Historical Romance Wuxia War but they should’ve just scrapped everything but romance away because what the actual heck is this?Historical but my girl survives something straight out of miracles cool?War?Then why is it just yapping, plus the war looks so staged bruh
Characters,He yan is a miserable woman who has to shoulder this burden of imposing as her elder brother in military school. She put herself through danger chances of dying for her achievements only for them to be swooped away by the real mask and she becomes disabled, nothing left of her to live.Oh and then she is killed but saved by her master and enters military again to regain her glory oh but she also goofs around!!like what?girl i get it you’ve been acting like some man for most of your life you can’t embrace your femininity but girl??you putting a big giant red flag on your ahh.Plus she ain’t even looked determined for revenge at all it feels more like some side quest and her main quest is to dominate xiao jue tf
Xiao jue,lil bro has been with HeRuFei since the kiddos he could’ve found out he was a fake and a woman like YEARS ago and the way he analysed Heyan but not freaking HeRuFei changing is stoopid lil bro acts like the next art of war author but probably going to be a victim bro he took less than a year to find out Heyan was a woman but buddy ain’t even notice Herufei like what?did he get the blind drink years ago?
Chu Zhao, lil bro tf is you ahh?Wtf happened to your whole character now your just gooning over heyan you used to be some cool morally gray manipulative guy but bro pulled that huge uno reverse off and decided to become a downbad loser that’s getting laughed at by all the viewers.Such a waste bro??
All the side characters, can you guys just kill the screen writer for more screen time please
The trope was pretty okay at first now Yappy silly girl and non chalant calm quiet guy but then they pull this damsel in distress at us so now what legend is she bro?Should be called “Legend of The Female Rizzler” tf girl pulled both genders like the amount of aura from the title itself bro???such a waste of a title
this drama’s supposed main objective was about A woman fighting (literally) in a world where men dominate with power and about the strong connection with the masks well that completely is destroyed.First few episodes she’s crushing it but I don’t see her influence much on the women well excluding the jiangyi arc but still??now the masks and heyans first confession with to mask it felt rushed there was so little time for you to dissect and digest it felt as if it were insignificant
Then after that it just digs deeper into sinkholes like it practically lost me after that heyan screws up so obviously to the enemies (her vengeance for her Xiong dis part) like is that even revenge anymore?Girl should get Zang Hai’s masters clearly Liu Bu Wang had a chatty and failure of a disciple girl ain’t even hiding it when she’s drunk
now war but this feels like some fake musical where the fl and ml are just performing cuz wtf?war is supposed to be dark, affecting everyone, chaos but wow they really wanted to put in some comedy. Why?just why?It feels like a spit into the face for those dead honourable soldiers to call this “war”

I dont like
I personally found it very boring. At first, it promised to be a grand epic of action and revenge led by our female protagonis after all, we were supposed to be watching the story of our female general in a male-dominated world. But of course, there's always a catch. What we actually got was a 36-episode parade of pure filler and a lukewarm romance, dull flashback scenes of characters irrelevant to the plot, poorly executed action scenes, boring side plots, and often it feels like the supporting characters get more screen time than the leads. As for the main couple, I didn’t find them particularly compelling—the acting felt cold and uninspired. Was this review helpful to you?

Director stop saving your characters like this you can do better
been waiting for this drama for about 4 months now, recently I've watched a lot of dramas and all were good but still i didn't get the feeling I've been long awaiting, the feeling of Iconics drama like, joy of life, the long ballad, love like galaxy, something that just have good plot and intense drama that keeps you clicking next episode non stop, well this drama might just be the next ticker, and all i can say is it seems very promising. I'm exited to see how the plot unfolds....
that's what you were expecting to hear right?
well here's my truth: Maybe i expected too much from the storyline and hype I don't even understand what went wrong.
From the first episode the female lead was depicted to be all strong and mighty with great military achievements, but upon seeing her she didn't strike that appearance but its cool that's okay because thats not even the worst part, the worst part is how rushed the beginning seems with unrealistic acting and the way the characters and the story are just so predictable, there are use of some cliche drama devices that i hate seeing a lot, instances like when the male lead coincidentally meets the female lead and saves her from falling into the stream by pulling her then this director plays that dumb music at that scene whereas she is also the general under the masks whom he has known all his life but this guy didn't even know who she was.
well i guess thats not so bad right?
well Surprise Surprise it's gets worse because there was a scene where an assassin was sent to kill the female lead and they had gotten into an intense fights which was not even that intense but it was meant to look intense, then this girl gets stabbed in the stomach and the sword literally came out over other side and she fell over the cliff at this moment this drama should have ended but this lady survived she literally survived it 😭😭
i hope the director stops using such cliche deux machina scenes to save his characters.
and i see a good plot but not just the right acting and action
Edit: just caught up to the last episode and all i can say is it gets worse, firstly theres too much scenes with coincidence which makes this drama slightly unbearable to watch.
secondly who in their right mind conspires against their own state for its downfall, talking about sacrifing cities of your state for gains.
Third and last got me crying, so you're telling me she gets stabbed in the hearts with a sword and she survives that, but another martial artists maid gets stabbed by a little kitchen knife on the shoulders and dies????
😭 why director? weishema?

She Fought, She Loved, She Won… But the Drama Fell Just Short
“The general who commanded both her life and her army.”The Legend of the Female General was an okay watch for me. The story set out to be empowering and in some ways it was. We got to follow He Yan’s journey as she fought against all odds to become the first female general of Wei. What struck me most was how she had to constantly disguise herself, bending her own identity just to keep moving forward. She didn’t have much free will, but what she did have was resilience ;an unshakable determination to live life on her own terms.
The drama touched on so many different aspects. There was comradeship, which I really enjoyed watching develop. It wasn’t easy for He Yan to gain the trust of her fellow soldiers, but over time, their loyalty to her felt genuine and heartfelt. Then there was the romance, which honestly melted me a little. He Yan fell in love with Xiao Jue(the “moon”)and in my eyes, she won. I loved how supportive he was of her, even back in their school days when he thought she was a boy. His attention was always on her and those expressive eyes said more than words ever could.
Family was another thread running through the story. Though her own relatives mistreated her and wanted her gone, He Yan always seemed to find true family wherever she went. Friends turned into siblings, comrades into a home. That part really grounded the story for me...(Ride or Die Buddies).
Still, I can’t say the drama completely won me over. For some reason, it just didn’t have that extra spark that makes a show unforgettable. I enjoyed it, I appreciated the acting but it’s not something I’d call a must-watch. It was good, just not one that’s going to linger in my memory for long.
In short, The Legend of the Female General was well-rounded, heartfelt, and empowering, but it stopped just short of being truly memorable.

Strong Chemistry and a Story with a Touch of Mulan
This was my first time watching both the ML and FL, and I wasn’t disappointed at all. They had great chemistry together, and I have to give special praise to the ML, his acting was consistent and convincing all throughout the drama. The story itself is really good, with some resemblance to Mulan. It’s a mix of drama, comedy, and romance, so it never feels boring. Since this is a military drama, there are plenty of political scenes, but if you’re not into politics, you can honestly just skip those parts and still enjoy watching.
Toward the end, I thought we were headed for a happy ending—especially when they showed the ML and FL’s relationship after all the political conflict. But then the second male lead really tested my patience, along with the Emperor, whose selfishness caused a lot of frustration. Thankfully, the Emperor redeemed himself in the end with his decision to let the ML and FL be together.
Overall, Legend of the Female General is definitely binge-worthy and worth watching—especially if you enjoy this kind of genre.

Trust and power
What impressed me most is how natural the relationship between the leads feels – their chemistry is built on trust and mutual respect, without anything exaggerated or forced. Every scene between them flows effortlessly, and you can really believe in their bond. The female lead is such a strong character, and the actress does a fantastic job bringing her to life. She’s confident, capable, and never overshadows or gets overshadowed – which makes the romance even more balanced and enjoyable to watch.
The fight scenes are another highlight. They’re well choreographed, with movements that look fluid and convincing from both sides, adding a lot of authenticity to the story. And of course, Xiao’s cold, piercing gaze is unforgettable – it perfectly suits his role and adds so much intensity to the drama.
Overall, this drama has just the right mix of action, romance, and emotional depth. With strong characters, believable chemistry, and battles that actually look real, The Legend of the Female General is definitely worth watching!

Quirky Female general and her second chance at life and love❣️❣️
In the beginning, you see the female general that has been created by others to mimic a man. Her face is covered with a heavy mask and she is made to hide every aspect of her femininity. She gets trained and becomes extremely strong 💪 .As the drama progresses, I believe she cares less and less about looking like aman and embraces her femininity. The once gloomy and aloof general embraces life and is happy to express her quirky and comedic side when she joins as a trainee. That was somehow heartwarming to watch. She is also quite sweet with her army brothers and takes all challenges with a positive attitude. What I love about her is the fact that she is quite good at resolving/handling disagreements with army brothers.
The FL doesn't really mind getting caught or revealing herself in certain situations much later because she has proved her worth and made important alliances by then.
Also, after carrying on the weight of other people's expectations for soo long, she has now decided to live for herself and enjoy the journey fully. Hence, you also get to see a much more unshackled and free version of hers. This doesn't mean that she has no PTSD and she is completely free from trauma. They have also showed her vulnerable side.
The male lead of the drama is such a cool general who is also a great strategist. His aim is restoring hus father's glory and the FL becomes his greatest asset along the way. I think the male's character could have been much better but they missed making him a bit more interesting.
Overall, it's enjoyable...not a masterpiece but fairly and oddly enjoyable.
Both the actors did a great job and had a good chemistry with each other

writing this as a newbie of historical cdrama watcher
i'm not usually a fan of this type of historical cdrama, usually i just watch modern dramas. but this one really makes me want to give other costume dramas a try (again). the only costume dramas i’ve loved so far are The Untamed, The Princess Royal and Scarlet Heart (i've dropped so many custom dramas before this). so, my suggestion, if you are new into this kind of cdrama then it's a good drama for you to watch. it's easy to watch and the political conflict not too complicated to understand. Was this review helpful to you?
Disappointing
Adaptations always involve changes, but this one cut away everything that made He Yan deserving of the title Female General—her resilience after devastating loss, her grit, and her brilliance on the battlefield. What’s left are speeches about “women can do it all,” without the actions to prove it.The book Xiao Jue is so cold at the beginning, but there are obvious reasons. We get a hero worth swooning over eventually when he gets to know the FL. Here the writers seems to think just him staring at her with his good looks should have been enough for us.
This was the author’s best novel. Unlike some of his other works, where most women besides the heroine are cast as venomous, here it was much less so, which I appreciated. The strategic scenes were also written with logic, and He Yan’s victories felt earned and exhilarating. By comparison, the drama’s battles and schemes come across as shallow, which feels unfair to both the author and fans of the original work.

A legend lost in the making
I honestly don’t even know how to write a proper review for this series, especially knowing that around 70% of the script was reportedly cut and never made it to the final release.I waited a year for this. Alongside other fans who grew increasingly impatient, the hype and expectations naturally skyrocketed. So it’s with a bit of guilt that I say it was a major letdown. And I’m not blaming the cast. I’m not even sure it’s fair to point fingers at the crew behind the scenes.
The cast did well. The leads, in particular, gave solid performances—their portrayals felt natural, and their chemistry was genuinely palpable. The character foundations were strong and consistent: both leads were smart, capable generals with a shared past that tied them together.
I appreciated how their decisions aligned with who they were. They’d die for each other, yes, but they also refused to be the chains that held each other back from duty and ambition. The romance was more realistic yet still gave you butterflies.
But the disappointment lies in knowing there was supposed to be more in the series. You can definitely feel the absence of something.
The transitions between scenes are jagged, the pacing off, and the script feels unnatural and weak. So many moments just don’t make sense. Like, how can the characters casually approach the king, reveal something, and suddenly gain favor? How does the king pardon so easily? How do things fall perfectly into place after a few mishaps and struggles?
I also don’t mind predictability. With the sheer volume of content out there, it’s hard to avoid. But I do wish there had been a stronger buildup, something that explored the themes deeper and gave the story more weight.
The only real strength of this series is the cast, especially the leads. Everything else suffers from small issues that snowballed into a major miss.
It genuinely feels like the production team was scrambling to keep things afloat the entire time, throwing in whatever they thought might work.
Honestly, I feel sorry for the cast. After all the delays and behind-the-scenes struggles, they were weighed down by issues beyond their control.

"Legend of Female General" - From Warrior to Damsel: How a Promising Drama Lost Its Way
I was so hyped for this drama. The cast seemed decent, the hype was huge, and it was based on a novel I really liked a novel where the female lead, He Yan, is a true powerhouse: smart, strategic, fierce, and fighting her own battles without depending on anyone. The title itself Legend of Female General promised a story about women’s strength and resilience. The first 10 episodes had me hooked. We saw He Yan’s determination, her fight skills, and that adrenaline rush every time she faced an enemy. But after episode 10… everything went downhill. Suddenly, the woman who was supposed to be a legendary general became clingy, overly domestic, and constantly in need of saving. Every fight scene lasted maybe 10 seconds before she got injured, and like clockwork, the male lead Xiao jue would appear no matter how far away to rescue her. There’s even a ridiculous shallow-water drowning scene just to set up a rescue kiss.
Worse, here's hardly anything related to He Yan’s revenge and trauma. Her betrayal by her family? Barely addressed. Her stepbrother’s conspiracy? Glossed over. Her father’s role? Ignored. Even the second male lead gets more meaningful screen time than the supposed female lead.
In the novel, He Yan fought head-on, made her own choices, and carried her own story. In the drama, she’s reduced to pleasing Xiao jue, blaming herself for things she didn’t do, and existing mainly to serve his arc. This isn’t a female-centric drama anymore it’s a romance drama wearing the disguise of one.
What frustrates me most is the double standard. Look at Legend of Zhang Hai this year — a male-centered revenge drama. The ML there is driven by his goal, and romance is just a side element. The execution is tight, the focus never wavers. Why can’t a female-centered drama be given the same respect? Why must her story be softened, diluted, and twisted until she can’t stand on her own without a man?
Legend of Female General could have been epic. Instead, it’s proof of how female-led stories are still treated: not as legends in their own right, but as backdrops for a man’s tale. The only thing worth watching is the acting and chemistry now the execution is bad and it seems like many scenes are cut. For a drama I waited so long for... what a letdown.

From a perspective having read the book
The first few episodes have shown me a great deal of what to expect from this show.First of all, the casting is amazing. I think they did a great job with casting the Main Couple, as i think both actors fit the image that the show is portraying the MCs with very well. Very gentle, stoic and handsome visuals.
What pegged me as interesting was that they have stricken certain plot points and thus characters from the show in comparison to the book. I think it makes sense to change some aspects, although i still was a bit surprised and I hope that the a sense of characters like the He family for example won't make a difference. Also i think they combined Cheng Lisu and Lin Shuang He? I really look forward but also am sceptical about these changes, since most characters they have removed were my faves in the book.
The tone of the show is rather solemn and more serious than I initially would have expected from reading the book, but it makes sense and I already could tell from the trailers. The FL He Yan does not get reborn like in the book but is saved from death and enlists in the army. In the book she seems a bit more silly (in a good way) and like a funny strong minded girl. So far I feel like in the show she is more of a more calmer personality. I don't mind this, i'm very excited to see it.
The first few episodes were very fun so far and I will continue editing as we go!
I recommend giving it a shot, if you're in the mods for an epic.
