K-Drama This review may contain spoilers
Shadow Punisher is a brilliant ancient detective drama! The storytelling is tight and full of unexpected twists. Luo Yunxi perfectly portrays Li Si, smart and charming. The production design, costumes and soundtrack are stunning. The cases are thrilling with a nice mix of mystery and humor. I totally get hooked and binge-watch every episode. A must-watch for anyone who loves historical mystery series! Was this review helpful to you?
Plot:
The pacing is far too slow, averaging about 5 episodes to solve a single case. This makes the pacing drag even further due to the heavy amount of filler, which makes case-solving feel tedious. There are quite a few comedic elements that help break the tension, but they only appear in the early episodes. After episode 10, the comedy completely disappears—or if it's there, it's nowhere near as funny as in the beginning. A mystery drama should deliver surprises seasoned with thriller elements, especially since the beginning of the story features cases blended with thriller and horror vibes. After that, the cases become less interesting, and side characters arguably shouldn't have been given backstories, especially when the main character's backstory feels shorter than the side characters's.
Furthermore, the character writing for Meng Rui is frustrating. He is supposed to be a detective, yet he acts reckless, restless, and impulsive—attempting to kill two suspects and shouting at a witness whose mental health is fragile and sensitive after witnessing her caregiver's death. Such unprofessionalism makes viewers wonder how he ever became an investigator, and it really distracts fans who enjoy serious investigative stories.
Acting:
The overall acting of the cast is average, with only Luo Yunxi and He Hongshan standing out as good.
- Luo Yunxi always delivers flawless acting with rich micro-expressions. However, in this drama, it feels like something is holding him back, making his performance look less than maximized. Even so, Luo Yunxi still manages to bring his character to life and makes the drama look better.
- Fang Yilun’s acting is very flat and expressionless; he constantly wears an angry expression, yet it remains completely deadpan. Even though his voice actor is good, it still couldn't save his acting quality.
- Shen Yujie’s acting is a bit lacking, but still watchable.
- He Hongshan gives a good performance, capable of creating intense tension with her co-stars, especially in scenes with Luo Yunxi.
-The actor playing Luo Tianming is also lacking, while the veteran actors do a good job.
BGM / Music:
The background music is sometimes misplaced. In my opinion, during sad scenes, it is better to use ambient BGM rather than an OST, because the OST tracks pop up suddenly and stop abruptly without a proper resolution.
Overall:
Mediocre story; mediocre acting except for Luo Yunxi and He Hongshan. The BGM/OST is somewhat misplaced and fails to properly support the mood and atmosphere.

A dark historical mystery with a Sherlock style
From the beginning, Shadow Punisher drew me in.It has exactly the balance I want from a mystery drama: intriguing and genuinely dark cases, plenty of atmosphere, great characters, and just enough lightheartedness to keep things fun without undermining the more sinister side of the story.
The cases are easily one of the show's biggest strengths. They're strange, atmospheric and often quite macabre, with bizarre deaths, unsettling imagery and seemingly supernatural occurrences. But underneath all that weirdness are very human motives, and there are enough twists and misdirection to make the investigations genuinely engaging.
I love how the show continues to come up with unusual scenarios while gradually revealing the connections between them. What initially appears to be a series of strange, isolated crimes is becoming something much bigger, with political intrigue, hidden agendas and secrets from the past adding another layer to the investigations. The stakes are clearly growing, but the show hasn't lost the sense of fun that makes it so enjoyable.
Luo Yunxi is fantastic as Li Si, a Sherlock style character who is as intelligent and observant as he is sly and unpredictable. He's a complete wildcard, and half the intrigue is never knowing whether his seemingly impulsive behaviour is actually calculated all along. As more of his past comes into focus, there's also a growing complexity beneath his seemingly carefree facade.
His dialogue is another highlight—sharp and witty. He can tease someone, dodge a question, provoke a reaction and casually slip in an important observation almost in the same breath. Luo Yunxi delivers it all with such effortless charm and wry amusement that even the simplest exchanges become a pleasure to watch.
His camaraderie with the three constables—Meng Rui, Bai Zhenzhu and Yan Cheng—is also a big part of the fun. Their different personalities give him plenty to bounce off, and the banter and growing camaraderie provide a great counterbalance to the darker cases. They're all capable investigators in their own right, making the team dynamic feel much more satisfying.
That's probably what I'm enjoying most about Shadow Punisher as a whole. It can be creepy, dark and genuinely disturbing, but it never becomes oppressively bleak. The humour comes naturally from the characters and their interactions, so it doesn't feel like it's interrupting the mystery. If anything, the lighter moments make the darker ones hit harder.
The mysteries give me something to puzzle over, the atmosphere gives them weight, and the increasingly interconnected story keeps me wanting more. Most importantly, the characters make the journey between each reveal just as entertaining as the mysteries themselves.
Definitely recommend this one.

Outstanding Original and Engaging and Addictive
Shadow Punisher is an exceptional Chinese drama that deserves international recognition. From its intriguing mysteries and clever storytelling to its breathtaking cinematography, beautiful costumes and outstanding performances, this production is truly impressive.
Luo Yunxi delivers another remarkable performance as Li Si, demonstrating his extraordinary versatility as an actor. His ability to convey intelligence, vulnerability, determination and humour through even the smallest expressions is captivating. He brings incredible depth and charisma to his character, making Li Si both fascinating and endearing.
What makes this drama particularly enjoyable is its combination of suspense, supernatural elements, intricate investigations, emotional storytelling and unexpected comedy. Each mystery draws the viewer further into a fascinating world where appearances can be deceiving and every detail matters.
The supporting cast deserves enormous praise. The chemistry between the characters, their friendships, witty exchanges and teamwork bring warmth and personality to an otherwise dark and mysterious storyline.
The production quality is equally impressive. From the elaborate historical settings and magnificent costumes to the atmospheric lighting, special effects and beautifully choreographed action sequences, the attention to detail is outstanding.
What I particularly appreciate is that Shadow Punisher does not rely on romance to maintain the audience’s interest. Instead, it allows its characters, mysteries and compelling storytelling to take centre stage.
As an Australian viewer and an admirer of Chinese dramas, I sincerely hope this wonderful production receives the international attention and appreciation it deserves.
Luo Yunxi continues to demonstrate why he is such an exceptionally talented and compelling actor. His dedication to his craft shines through in every performance.
Congratulations to Luo Yunxi, the entire cast, director, writers and production team for creating such an entertaining, imaginative and beautifully produced drama.

Amazing Ancient Detective Drama
This is a fantastic ancient detective drama! The lead actor delivers a brilliant performance, fully bringing the character to life. The set design is gorgeous and immersive, every scene feels authentic. The fight choreography is smooth and exciting, not the lazy CGI fights we often see. Visual effects are well-made and fit the story perfectly. The mystery plot keeps you hooked from start to finish. Highly recommend it!Was this review helpful to you?
Another quality production from Luo Yunxi
Exciting new production by Luo Yunxi and his trusted collaborators, many familiar faces from his previous dramas including many from Whispers of Fate. This period detective drama has blended Chinese mysticism, crime solving and comedy to achieve something an entertaining fast paced extravaganza. Every case features well thought out twists and turns which never feel forced . The mysticism aspect is most often tempered by the convincing acting and realistic depictions of human nature and fallacies.
Highly addictive, recommended viewing!

Super
I've watched every episode of Mei ying shen bu (Shadow Punisher) that has aired so far—and now I'm stuck waiting desperately for more. The plot pulls you in from the very first minutes. Every episode ends on a note that makes it impossible not to click "next"—and when the episodes run out, all that's left is rewatching favorite scenes and wondering what comes next. What really hooks me is how the hero's personal goal intertwines with the investigations the team takes on. It's not just a collection of separate cases; it's one connected story where everything matters. Luo Yunxi captures that duality beautifully: the character visibly changes before your eyes, and he's genuinely compelling to watch.
I'm waiting impatiently for the next episodes.

I subscribed to IQiyi because of this C-Drama
After my experience in watching the dramas “Till the End of The Moon” and “Whispers of Fate”, I knew that I can’t miss Luo Yunxi’s dramas. This drama is so interesting as it not only shows a lot of Chinese cultural stuffs (rituals, ghost’s, puppets etc.) but also contains detective stories (scientific and logical techniques used). From this drama, I have a peek of ancient Chinese mythology about ghosts, and I learned how the coroner technique being developed in ancient time. Interesting storyline! Casts are great actors and actresses too. I remember Alan Feng in the story as he appears in drama WoF too.Was this review helpful to you?

Outstanding characters and production
The show has a very interesting male lead in that he is refreshingly vivacious, funny and cunning (in a good way). I’ve never seen Luo Yunxi in a role like this, as he usually plays more graceful, mysterious and reflective characters. What a wonderful surprise!I love the production value of the show, with the right amount of scary elements and fancy set pieces. the story contains interesting hooks that keep you wanting to see to the end. I can’t wait for the rest of the episodes to air.
