Zhang Linghe’s Charm and Chemistry Carried the Show
For those wondering, what’s the hype here?Answer: the male lead’s character charm that’s worth “dying” for.
Every close-up shot of ZLH, the romantic scenes, the lines, the insane chemistry with the female lead, his "fatherly" moments with the kid, and all the classic rescuing (英雄救美) moments will have you smiling like an idiot in front of your screen. It’s the typical lonely, cold-blooded guy finding meaning in life after falling in love. Yes, you know it’s cliché, but people still eat it up, myself included. Honestly, this really is ZLH’s prime drama. The director clearly knows how to capture his best angles and make you fall for him.
In terms of plot, there are quite a lot of war scenes, which keeps things exciting through most of the drama, if you like fighting scenes. BUT, I do think it dipped a little towards the end. The climax wasn’t built strongly enough to really hit emotionally, and things got slightly messy when tying everything together. Still, overall it’s good.
As for the female lead (Chang Yu), I really loved her character at the start. She was cute and shy, yet also strong and brave as a butcher. But it kinda lost its charm later on after she became a general. She suddenly has a lot of pride and kept pushing away the male lead’s protective moments. I get that the plot was trying to make her an independent general, but it didn’t fully make sense to me. Honestly, she could have been just as strong as a powerful general’s wife. If you’ve watched other dramas focused on generals, you’ll know that becoming one requires experience in war strategy and leadership, not just the ability to strike and kill. Because of that, the “general” role felt a bit shallow, which is why I’m giving this a 9.0 instead of a full 10.
As for the side roles and stories, I personally didn’t enjoy the second couple’s abusive love dynamic, but I really loved the family and friendship arcs, like the two kiddos, the 杀猪小队 (Butcher Squad), the soldiers of Wu’an Hou, the Grand Tutor, and the villagers. Lastly, an honorable mention goes to Song Yan’s “shaming” scenes, so satisfying!

Good But A Classic Case of Poor Pacing
Pursuit of Jade has all the ingredients for a memorable drama: compelling leads, a strong premise, and emotional depth. But in trying to do everything, it ultimately sort of fumbles its own story.EP 1 - 18
We open in Lin'an (a cosy little village) and before you know it, we have an arranged marriage between 2 good looking people who clearly have some tension. One who is thought to be dead and the one who saved him. A great combination.
We get to play house for a while, butcher pigs, make friends with single moms, build a found family and beat up ex fiances all while fighting off judgemental neighbours and avoiding the problems in the capital like all Marquis and their wives do.
And then slowly but surely, reality catches up to them and they face a major disaster (EP 18).
EP 18 - 27
The next few episodes we see Changyu navigating grief from the horrible massacre of her village people, the loss of her little sister, separation from her husband and the conscription of her loved ones. She perseveres through it all and even gets conscripted into the army as well.
She goes to the camp in EP 24 where she sees Zheng and her little sister and then we spend the next 3 episodes setting BACK her character development and making her look like a fool.
She becomes this reckless, almost arrogant person who somehow thinks it's okay to flout military laws and bait prisoners, and instead of Zheng to allow her to deal with the consequences of her actions, he wants to be whipped in her steed because he's low-key a masochist.
Zheng still lies to her about his identity and then he proceeds to make a bunch of other people lie to her about it as well.
She also DRUGS him before a BATTLE and miraculously kills a GENERAL with no substantial wounds to her person and what does Zheng do when he shows up? Carries her away from the battlefield of course, to go and have a lover's spat because his true identity has now been revealed.
Does she face any repercussions for DRUGGING the Marquis at such a critical time? No, because she's Mrs. Fan Changyu and the rules don't apply to her. After all she was only trying to be a good wife right?
EP 28 - 30
Prince Changxin is finally introduced in EP 28 and by EP 30 he was dead. I kid you not. Just 2 and a half episodes we spare for this guy. This is someone they hadn't even SHOWN since the beginning. This big bad character shrouded in mystery, only to be killed in 2 strikes (as Changyu so humbly likes to remind us) by a 19 yr old who has alarmingly little experience fighting wars and seasoned, battle hardened generals.
She suddenly has superhuman, Avengers type strength and prowess and the fact that Zheng left her to fight him and went after SUI YUANQING of all people only to LOSE him at the end was the cherry on top of our delusional cake.
Notice how there hasn't been much worth mentioning about Zheng well that's because he's basically a background character when he's not interacting with Changyu and even then she overshadows him. He spends a lot of his time sick/riddled with injury and his only character trait is being Changyu's malewife.
EP 30 - 40
At this point, we have 10 episodes left and then suddenly the weight of the capital and it's schemes comes crashing down.
Changyu becomes a commander, the truth about her parentage, the Li clan's alliance with Qi Min, Qi Min betraying the Sui clan, Wei Xuan's parentage, Wei Yan and his past lover, Wei Yan and the puppet Emperor, Qi Min's plans of taking the throne, the truth about Eastern palace fire that happened 17 years ago, the truth about the Chongzhou massacre that also happened 17 years ago, etc.
So many plot lines, stories to follow, truths uncovered, loose ends to wrap up and it all ends up condensed and mushed together with a mildly satisfying ending.
The first half takes its time (maybe a bit too much) building an intense, character driven story with emotional stakes and the second half loses restraint and nuance. It's a bit poorly written and things aren't given the time they deserve. I found myself skipping through the last few episodes just to get the end quickly.
Overall, Pursuit of Jade was a promising watch in the beginning and an exhausting one in the end.

Sizzle To Fizzle
This show started strong but kinda went downhill after episode 29. The editing became choppy, scenes didn't flow well, and most of the time, narrations replaced actual action, which completely took away from the story's impact. I felt the Lin'An arc was overly prolonged which resulted in significant plot sacrifices to fit everything in.The male lead's character was sidelined and watered down, causing him to be overshadowed by the female lead throughout the drama. The Marquis of Wu'An, a figure of great importance was just an aura farmer with no real action on the battlefield. it’s honestly irritated me to no end. Just give this man some epic battle scenes for crying out loud!
Then there’s also our FL who faced zero consequences for her reckless actions after joining the military. She drugged her husband and made him miss a crucial battle, but was let off without any punishment because she was the wife of the Marquis. She broke many more rules and still faced no consequences, making it feel like she was above the law. Then we had her character become superwoman-like, killing seasoned generals on the battlefield with just two strikes, despite having no proper military training or battle experience. This was the fastest I’ve seen a soldier rise to the position of a general after just two battles. So unrealistic.
Despite the flaws with the writing, I think Tian Xiwei deserves credit for her performance here. It's her first drama I've seen and I’m quite impressed. ZLH, was still able to deliver a good one despite his FL overshadowing him.
I’m not gonna end this without mentioning Qi Min and Sui Yuanqing, oh boy, the Sui brothers were so deadly. I applaud Deng Kai for his portrayal of Qi Min. He portrayed this complex character so brilliantly. Lin Mu Ran equally did an amazing job, and it’s impressive considering he's just 20. I still can’t get over the confrontation scene between the brothers which led to SYQ's demise. That whole performance was peak.
Overall, this was an entertaining watch.

Living my Zhu Yu era
There's so much attention to detail in this cdrama.Did you notice the Pursuit Of Jade logo has a hidden pig and butcher knife as strokes in its original Chinese design?
I was already a fan of Director Zeng Qing Jie and screenwriter Zou Rue, whom were responsible for Blossom and Love like the Galaxy, respectively, in the past. I have also being following the career of the lead actress, Tian Xiwei, so I was always going to watch the cdrama and most likely enjoy it. But what I found was so much more than what I expected.
I’m genuinely impressed by Pursuit of Jade. This cdrama is a beautiful example of what happens when every creative element works in harmony.
First, the script is incredibly well crafted. The storytelling feels thoughtful and layered, balancing emotional depth with engaging plot development. Every episode reveals something meaningful about the characters, and the dialogue feels natural and purposeful rather than forced.
The cinematography is another standout. Each scene is framed with care, using lighting, composition, and color to create an atmosphere that enhances the story and characters' actions. Whether it’s sweeping landscape shots or quiet, intimate moments between characters, the visuals consistently elevate the drama and make it feel cinematic.
The direction deserves a lot of praise. The pacing is confident, allowing emotional scenes to breathe while still keeping the narrative moving forward. The director clearly understands how to build tension, highlight character relationships, and guide the audience through the story in a way that feels immersive and satisfying. Yes, by the end, there's a couple of weak points but ultimately they feel irrelevant when you take a step back and see the entire picture that was presented.
And of course, the entire cast delivers fantastic performances. Every actor brings sincerity and depth to their role, making the characters feel authentic and relatable. The chemistry between the cast members is especially strong, which makes the emotional moments land even harder.
Tian Xiwei carried this story with ease, warmth and power. I knew she had it in her and I am so glad this particular project, this team, gave her the chance to shine like the absolute badass she is. From being a small town girl to a soldier defeating seasoned generals with a butcher knife, and finally a first rank official, her journey was incredible to witness. The character of Changyu was the beating heart bringing everything she touched alive.
Zhang Linghe is growing as an actor with each new performance and I feel he did a really good job portraying the dualities and nuances of a character like Zheng. From aloof and cold, he slowly peeled each layer to show his true heart. Which was full of love for Changyu, his friends and even his very complex family. Through everything Zheng was steadfast, an agent of chaos and order.
Tian and Zhang had great chemistry through the entire run of the cdrama and delivered one of the best romances I have seen in a while. Their characters complemented and see each other for whom they are. Zheng was always proud of Changyu, whatever she was a butcher girl or a mighty general, and in return she was always a source of support for him. If they had fights, they would openly communicate with each other and grow from those experiences, so they could be a better and even stronger team. They always had a tacit understanding of who they were as a couple and it made their love unconditional and true.
I must comment on screenwriter Zou Ye, once again, on this point. Particularly because all the characters were properly developed, not just the leads. This script is so tight, by the end of the cdrama, you understand everyone's motivations, desires and fears. Every character had their time in the spotlight, no matter how small their role, and it eventually lead to a bigger effect in the story, culminating into all the key players meeting in the same place to finally reveal harsh truths, find justice and peace.
The enemies are fascinating and nuanced. Life for many of these characters was like war and they behaved as if they were fighting a great evil trying to destroy their loved ones. Ultimately, all they did was destroy themselves. And the way the Director Zeng and screenwriter Zou present this point, with visual storytelling and dialogue, it's truly beautiful because you can see and understand the parallels between heroes and the so-called villains. All of these details, makes Zhu Yu my early call as the best drama of 2026.
Overall, Pursuit of Jade is a beautifully made cdrama with strong writing, stunning visuals, thoughtful direction, and a talented cast that truly brings the story to life. Definitely worth watching.

Deserved to be a Drama of the year
First of all, I do LOVE all the characters, they were cast perfecty & suit their roles well. I esp love Qi Min the most (Deng Kai did an impressive job here), from my first impression, I did not think he would be that bad person. But Deng Kai portrayed Qi Min well that I could not 100% hate him. I (and I believed that other ppl) feel sorry for his lost and hatre. He was born into a very high status, yet had to live in suffering & constant paranoia. What Sui Yuanqing last few words for him was absolutely right. Also, his obsession towards Yu Qianqian was truly terrifying, he was extremely fixated on her. If I were her, I would run away as far as I could and even wish for her husband's de*th. In addition, the story at Lin'an village was truly impressive, the villagers and their normal lives. When the ML disguised himself and lived there, it felt so peaceful and full of simple happiness. Also, I really love how strong the female characters are in this show. Furthermore, every character was presented beautifully, and all the actors and actresses did an excellent job. And for the custume, makeup, and scenary were amazing.Overall, Persuit of Jade is absolutely worth watching!

Best cdrama I have ever watched (Masterpiece )
This drama absolutely demands a 10/10. I was hooked from the first episode. The plot is solid though it got a bit confusing they did a great job trying to include as many aspects as possible from the book it would have been great if it had 10 or more episodes. The characters got depth in them.the casting is perfectly done.everyone had their moments.the lead actors brought a raw authenticity to their roles and allowed the audience to feel every ounce of their joy and turmoil. The chemistry was undeniable. The villains were so good that they made us hate them.
Technically, it’s a fest to the eyes the cinematography was breathtaking I would say combined with a beautiful music .
The director had a very clear and unwavering vision which we felt in every frame.
An absolute must watch and an obsessively rewatch.
That is it .my first ever drama review.

THE BEST C-DRAMA OF THE YEAR!
I just finished Pursuit of Jade and I honestly don’t think I’ll recover anytime soon. This is hands down one of the best dramas I’ve ever watched, and I’m not even exaggerating. Everything about it just hit perfectly—the story, the pacing, the emotions, and especially the leads. Like… where do I even start? The female lead? Absolutely iconic. She’s strong, smart, and doesn’t take nonsense from anyone. It’s so refreshing to see a character who actually stands her ground and makes her own decisions instead of constantly being pushed around. She’s not just “strong” for the sake of it either—it feels real, like every choice she makes comes from her experiences and values. I loved how she handled every situation with both confidence and vulnerability.
And the male lead… oh my god. He is EVERYTHING. The way he’s so powerful and respected, yet completely soft and whipped for her? I was screaming. He has that classic general aura—calm, intimidating, in control—but the second it comes to her, he melts. It never felt forced or cringey either. His love was steady, protective, and honestly just so satisfying to watch.
Their chemistry?? Insane. Every scene together felt natural and emotional, whether it was tension, romance, or just quiet moments. You could feel how much they cared about each other without it needing to be over-the-top.
I genuinely didn’t want it to end. This drama set the bar way too high, and now I don’t know what to watch next because nothing feels like it’ll compare. If you’re even thinking about watching it—just do it. It’s THAT good. Seriously! Anyone who doesn't watch this drama is missing out a lot. The whole series is just 10/10.

I'd rewatch it in a heartbeat
I loved it. I cried in ep 40. I feel like we get to know those ppl from 17 years ago.. that are presnet and or tell us on why they did what they did, and we i feel get to know each part of their story. Sad moments. I mean i creid.. I paced. I'm a person.. if something intense happened.. I will pause the show and start pacing. Ive done that a lot in this drama because its intense. I loved the sountrack as well. I loved the story. It wasnt dragging. I feel like if you dont pay attention on who each character is it will drag. unless its just bad writing then it may drag. this drama didnt drag for me. I loved it. I loved the chemistry, the intensity, everything about this drama. and yes like the headline says.. id rewatch it in a heart beat. Was this review helpful to you?
Beginning Eps are everything?
Started off so strong—those village episodes were everything. The chemistry, the simplicity, all the cute little moments… I was completely hooked. Honestly, that part of the story felt so genuine and warm, I just wanted it to last longer. But later on, I found myself skipping quite a bit. I couldn’t connect the same way anymore. I get that the ML had to hide his identity in the beginning, but I really feel like he should’ve told her the truth sooner. Anyone in her position would’ve reacted the same way—it just felt frustrating to watch.
And after she becomes a general… I don’t know, something felt different. Maybe it’s just me, but the vibe changed and I couldn’t fully stay invested. It'll always be Yan Zheng for me!!
And that sparring scene?? Absolutely unforgettable. Easily my favorite moment in the drama.
Still… I can’t help but wish we could go back to those village days :(

Best costume drama!
By far the best costume C drama I’ve seen. It was interesting how and why he kept his name and status hidden. Loved how they made the FL strong and also a hero in the story. Her friends were very supporting and funny. The ML was super cute and nice towards his little sister in law! It took them way to long to act like husband and wife…Still the best costume C drama!

Exceptional, Strong fl. Excellent
Woowww, this drama is so good, I was hooked from episode 1. I love that the fl is strong, she's not a damsel in distress. She carries her strongness from ep 1 to the end. Zhang linghe did justice to the character. He was strong when he needed to be and with Changyu he was clingy, he wasn't cold and dismissive like the typical generals, whenever it came to Changyu he was like a baby, always wanting reassurance and kisses which is so beautiful. The ending was done beautifully. Overall the all the actors did so well. Well done to the team I will definitely rewatch this a countless times. Don't listen to the other haters saying ugly stuff about the drama, it's a 100/10Was this review helpful to you?
