Wasted Potential Behind a Strong Cast
Unveil Jade Wind is a detective drama with light romance, a strong focus on crime and mystery, and—unfortunately—weak character writing. The show is very case-centered, leaving little room for romance. The cases themselves are actually interesting, and some even feel wholesome, but many of them drag. The pacing, especially at the beginning, is quite slow for a detective series, and there were moments where I honestly felt bored. It’s not the strongest start for a show in this genre, but I’m glad I stuck with it.
My biggest issue is the writing of the characters. The cast is amazing—honestly one of the main reasons people tuned in—but the script doesn’t do them justice at all. The characters feel like they only exist to move the cases forward, without any real depth or development.
Bai Lu is one of my favorite actresses, and I’ll watch anything she’s in, but she felt unusually dull here. That’s not on her—it’s the writing. Her character lacked substance, and it didn’t allow her to showcase her usual range. The only time I really felt her performance shine was toward the end, during her revenge arc. That’s when she finally felt like herself again.
Wang Xingyue also didn’t fully land for me. I like him a lot, but this type of “cute, innocent” character doesn’t suit him as much. He shines more in dominant, powerful roles with strong presence. Here, his character felt underwhelming, and again, the writing didn’t help. It didn’t give him enough to work with, so his performance didn’t stand out the way it usually does.
Also, this is like his third detective-style project in a row, and he even has another one coming up. It’s starting to feel repetitive. I honestly want to see him take on something different—maybe a stronger, more serious role, or even a general/leader-type character—because this genre is starting to feel overused for him.
Another issue I had was the dynamic between the leads. She’s supposed to be the detective, yet he’s the one solving most of the cases and figuring out the clues. That just didn’t make sense to me and felt like a poor writing choice. It would’ve been more logical to simply make him a detective.
Because the show is so episodic, it’s hard to really connect to the characters’ personal stories. Even when they try to give the leads emotional depth, it doesn’t hit as hard because the focus keeps going back to standalone cases. So overall, the emotional connection feels weak.
That said, there are definitely positives. The fight scenes were great, and the production quality is solid. I loved the costumes, especially seeing Bai Lu in a more “boyish” look—it was refreshing and different from her usual roles. The cinematography is also beautiful, and the OST is a standout—the opening track, in particular, is amazing.
The chemistry between Bai Lu and Wang Xingyue is another wasted opportunity. They clearly have natural chemistry, especially noticeable toward the end when their relationship develops, but the show never really gives it space to grow. It’s frustrating because you can see the potential, especially if you’ve watched their promotions or previous collaborations. At this point, they really deserve a proper romance drama together.
Overall, if you judge it purely as a detective show, it’s decent—just on the slower side. It’s not the best in the genre, and it’s definitely not memorable, but it’s still enjoyable. The ending wraps things up nicely, especially with how it gives closure to the victims, which I appreciated.
In the end, this drama feels like a case of wasted potential. With stronger writing and better pacing, it could’ve been something much better. Still, if you go in without high expectations—especially regarding the cast—it’s an enjoyable watch.

What u must know before starting this drama
My opening statement - I have mixed feelings. The actors did their best, there was a strong female lead and slowburn romance.Positives:
1. Cast
2. Strong female lead
3. More focused on the plot, as in, cases instead of romance - something different
Negatives:
1. Boring - the plot just gets boring. As we live in the modern world and many of us aren't from china, it is as it is challenging to follow the mysterious cases and the methodology of solving such cases. So, when directing such detective thriller historical dramas, special attention has to be paid to details and it has to be made sure that the viewers can understand the story. Thus I believe the main reason I found it boring despite such strong leads was poor storytelling.
2. Some cases just don't make sense and the drama runs for so long. That's a bummer.
This drama would never be my first choice. I'm expecting much more from Bai Lu's and Cheng Lei's drama 'Mo Li'.

Shoddy case-solving with a thoughtful tone
I was ready to skip this show because I heard it’s dark and stressful, but then I read the reviews that it’s a very female-centric drama and I just couldn’t resist. So, it is both of those things. The cases are pretty heavy. But more than that, I’d say they’re nuanced. Rather than murders out of selfishness or greed, for example, we have more murders for love or justified resentment, blurring the line between victim and perpetrator. And the cases do focus a lot on women, who are often portrayed in a sympathetic light.
This show also has a theme that the case is solved but justice is not achieved (eg everything gets covered up). Sometimes I was glad for this, because justice would have punished characters I sympathized with. But in general, this show has a lot of things to feel upset or depressed about.
The saving grace to it all is that the princess (FL) is right there with you, frustrated and dissatisfied. So coping with these issues become part of what the show is about, adding a thoughtful and philosophical tone which I really like. After each case, she talks it out with her partner, and we get some closure that way too.
And I do really like this FL. She’s on the cold side, but it’s not too exaggerated or overdone, so I found her very believable. Straightforward and unpretentious, kind of socially awkward but not completely maladjusted- I actually found her really relatable. I felt her emotions with her. Her level of authority is something of a plot hole, but at least she recognizes her privilege and wants to use it to help others.
The ML, on the other hand, is more the quietly thoughtful type. The FL has such a strong personality, he makes a good match. Their relationship grows throughout the show, via supportive conversations and quiet acts of care. Occasional misunderstandings arise between them, just enough to add a little tension and interest before being snuffed out by fearless communication. I actually really like their relationship and how it builds in a sweet, not-sappy way.
There are some side characters that are very likeable, though I wouldn’t have minded more development for them. I found the emperor particularly interesting. In some ways he’s a benevolent ruler and he treats the protagonists well, but also in doing what emperors do- playing politics, romping around his rear palace, etc- he can casually ruin lives with no accountability. Personally I think his role contributes to the thoughtfulness of the show, as I both blamed him and didn’t, and of course nobody in the show can.
Plot-wise, the show covers 7 cases, with the princess’s overarching case about her family developed throughout. Most of the show is about how the leads solve the cases, so until closer to the end, the developments of their characters and relationship are secondary. The cases are heavy but there are still moments of lightness, and the overall mood is not as dark as you might expect.
That said, the casework in this show is really loosey-goosey. It relies heavily on things like “deductions” out of nowhere, casual superskills (eg the FL’s super-nose, or the ML’s genius mental calculations), perfect coincidences, and so on. And if you take a step back, you might also realize that the cases themselves are riddled with logic holes and nonsense, overuse the same plot devices (suicide, anyone?), and seem contrived to make you cry as much as possible. At some point things got so tragic that I popped right out of immersion, and it got harder and harder to take things seriously again afterwards.
Plus the editing seems choppy, like they cut too many things. I was left confused about some events, reasonings, and significances. Also, important-seeming characters show up and then disappear willy nilly, like their character arcs were cut.
I don’t know if the show gets worse towards the end or my patience just expired, but I thought it was extra bad in the last few episodes. I was also not satisfied by the answer to the overarching mystery, which was not as interesting as it was built up to be.
Acting-wise, I thought Bai Lu does an excellent job here. I love her portrayal of the princess, my favorite is her look where you’re not sure if she’s about to cry. Wang Xingyue does a decent job, but some of the side characters seemed a bit stiff or overacted.
The fight choreography is not the best I’ve seen, but decent. Nobody’s technique is that impressive (except maybe old man with spear?), some hyperextension and stiffness, but I can definitely see it was physically exerting, as Bai Lu told her fans. The costumes and settings are pretty good. I like the princess’s work outfits and high ponytail style. Background music set the mood well, and I also really like the songs. But I think the songs are underused; I would not have minded more.
Overall, this show does have a lot of problems. The relationship and characters are good but secondary to the cases, yet the case-solving is shoddy and the cases themselves have problems. Bad editing makes it all make even less sense. ...this isn't making it sound like a good show, but I actually still really liked most of it. Although I sometimes had to exert active effort to suspend disbelief, I generally followed the cases with great interest, and I found them moving. Yet nothing is too sappy, for which I was extremely thankful. And I especially like the FL’s mix of straightforward business and unpretentious compassion as she solves cases, and the thoughtful, reflective tone that follows as she copes with reality.
ENDING – READ AHEAD ONLY IF YOU WANT TO KNOW, CONTAINS SPOILERS
This show has a happy ending. The princess gets both her revenge and her relationship, and satisfyingly, straight up accuses the emperor of all the things nobody dares to say. There are no last-minute deaths of likable characters.
There is about half an episode of wrap up, including- a pleasant surprise- flashes of side characters as well as some characters from the cases. What actually happens to everyone is unclear. The FL and ML ride off into scenery, but a poorly conceived post-credit scene hints at a sequel.
That said, I was actually quite dissatisfied by the ending. I felt the show lost its thoughtfulness a bit. Maybe the final villain and his motivation were too weak, or maybe it was the way it all played out, but I just didn’t feel many emotions about her finally achieving revenge.
Also, the two leads have a huge falling out before the final case, only to kind of implicitly get back together in the last episode without much fanfare. Their fight was one of the better in Cdramaland; I felt it was justified on both sides with intense and valid emotions, and it had angsty repercussions. That much angst deserves proper reconciliation. I would have preferred they address the issues directly and apologize.

Fearless
If you prefer mature female leads, this one’s definitely worth checking out. It’s definitely a unique series and won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. As a mystery thriller, I’m not expecting romance or a “Back to the Future” style plot like many current C-dramas that lean heavily on love stories or portray weaker female leads. I much prefer a capable, no nonsense female protagonist who isn’t overly cutesy.
Each episode keeps things engaging with its fast paced storytelling, although it can be a bit confusing at times when trying to keep track of the supporting cast. And as a BL fan, I’ve been especially excited to see this pairing.

One of or, if not the best mystery/suspense historical c dramas !!!
I'm really enjoying this drama. Most suspense mystery thriller dramas don't get to me because of how predictable the cases are. However the cases in this drama are well-written in depth and you can tell that the writer researched carefully about the dark reality. There isn't filler scenes and plots and its very realistic, and some cases are very sad. Each and every scene has hidden and dark meaning behinds the case and it takes many thinkings, observations, analyzings, etc to connect the patterns and solve the cases. I'd rewind many times to see what I miss, to be able to solve those cases along with Li Peiyi and Xiao Huaijin. Also, both the leads and all the casts including supporting roles to guest roles gave absolute justice and outstanding performance in the drama, The emotions, the stare, tone, everything were well-depicted. The cinematography is very beautiful and sometimes eery. This is mainly a suspense, thriller, mystery, solving cases drama so there's partial romance between the leads. Of course, it isn't lovely-dovey but rather healing and wholesome romance. You should definitely watch this drama if you enjoy observing, analyzing, brain storming, giving justice and playing a detectiveWas this review helpful to you?
Wasted Potential, Good Actors, Bad Editing
I’ve watched quite a lot of period costume C-dramas, and it’s honestly hard to describe this one. It features many familiar actors and actresses I’ve seen in other dramas, which initially made it quite interesting. However, the overall execution is disappointing. The pacing feels off—like scenes were cut abruptly or the show was fast-forwarded in parts. The editing isn’t done well, so everything feels disjointed and all over the place.I usually enjoy Bailu in her other dramas, but this one really didn’t work for me. Some individual cases or moments are decent, but overall it feels like the editor didn’t do a good job putting the story together. As many others have pointed out, the romance is almost non-existent—there’s barely any chemistry or relationship development. That said, romance wouldn’t matter as much if the storyline were strong enough.
I’d still give it a 6.5/10 because it had potential if it had been edited properly. It’s such a waste, especially with such a strong and familiar cast who have done well in other C-dramas.

Underwhelming: worst C-Drama I've watched as of yet!
This is one of the worst C-Drama I've watched. Anyone giving a 10 is biased...1- The story is simply bad and boring.
I usually love investigation/mystery stories, but in this one, people get murdered one after another nonstop, all for the stupidest reasons, while the female detective is allowed to do whatever she wants with zero consequences. The entire plot feels like a messy quilt stitched together from random, unrelated patches of story — nothing connects properly. Also, there’s supposed to be a slow-burn romance, but the character arcs are almost non-existent.
2-Both lead actors’ performances are underwhelming. I’m especially disappointed in Wang Xingyue, but with such a crappy script, even a great actor couldn’t work miracles.
3- The background music is ok, but it's not well calibrated: it's so loud it buries the actor's voices.
4- Most make up are not well done: actors look like they have a white powdered face...
5- Some scenes are lit in a bad way: colors are off, or it's overlit (overexposure)
6- Costumes are average
Overall, this was a huge letdown. Skip it unless you’re dying for background noise while folding laundry.

Ongoing review
I will be updating this review periodically so I don't forget what to say.Review up through episode 13:
- Love the costumes, not a fan of the makeup. The makeup makes people look kind of...gaunt. But, it's crime solving so perhaps that's what they intended?
- Pacing is a bit off. The first case was fine, the second case felt long and kinda went around in circles. So far, the third case is okay.
- The relationship between the two leads is rather stiff. Sure, this is still early and the tag says slight romance. Still, it's stiff and rather awkward. I've seen other dramas with Bai Lu and WXY. They can do romance. I don't know why in this drama (so far) the relationship is like this.
- I like how the cases have to do with the plight of women. To be female in dynastic China was difficult. This drama addresses many facets of the plight of women.
Review at episode 25:
- Cases still focus on the sad plight of women in ancient times.
- We learn more of the leads' backstory.
- The leads emote more. That's a relief.

SLOW
I’m currently on episode 18 and they are spending so much time on this particular case. Even so far to touch on the backstory of two side characters who have no connection to the main leads. I do not care about two side characters love story…let’s move the main lead love story already. It’s so frustrating. I might drop it.When other reviewers complained about pacing I thought maybe it would be fine. I am thinking that watching it at double speed would be better but then I wouldn’t be able to read it.

Protagonista babado demais!
