Beyond Romance: Strategy, Ambition, and Female Authority
First, I must admit: comparing two dramas starring the same actor, aired simultaneously, is almost inevitable. As someone who recently reviewed Unclouded Soul (also starring Hou Minghao), I approached Glory with a conscious effort to judge it on its own merits. However, the overwhelming popularity and unique narrative of Glory make the comparison a fascinating study in contrast and quality.Where Unclouded Soul offered a familiar, well-executed xianxia (fantasy) template, Glory presents something rarer: a truly innovative plot within the historical genre. Having watched hundreds of Chinese dramas, I can confidently say this storyline is a chef's kiss—an absolute masterpiece of intrigue and subversion.
🔥The Plot: A Breathtaking Game of Power and Tea
The plot is the undisputed star. Set against the backdrop of the Ming Dynasty tea trade, it centres on the Rong family—a powerful matriarchal clan where women hold absolute power. This simple premise unlocks a narrative treasure trove:
👑A Sisterhood at War: The core conflict isn't about women fighting for a man's favour, but sisters strategically battling for the inheritance and leadership of their family empire. Their competition is intellectual, ruthless, and deeply compelling.
🐍 "Marrying In" - A Role Reversal: The concept of men competing in contests to be chosen as husbands, essentially "marrying into" the powerful Rong family, is brilliantly subversive. It turns centuries of gendered tropes on their head.
♟️Calculated Moves in a Grey World: This is not a reverse harem drama, nor is it a mindless “girlboss” fantasy. Every character, from the leads to the supporting cast, operates in shades of grey or black. They are strategists, each with hidden agendas and personal trump cards. There are no naive "white lotus" characters to pity—only players in a high-stakes game.
🖤 Mystery and Romance: Woven through the family politics is a year-old missing person case investigated by the male lead, Magistrate Lu Jianglai (Hou Minghao). His path—losing his memory, being saved by the formidable eldest Rong daughter, Rong Shanbao (Gulnazar), and their ensuing chess game of love and suspicion—adds layers of suspense and slow-burn romance.
⚔️Female Lead: True Agency, Not Romantic Validation
Rong Shanbao is what a true “strong female lead” should be.
Her decisions are driven by ambition and responsibility, not romance. Her goal is clear: to expand the tea empire and secure her position. Love is secondary—almost optional.
What I appreciated most is that female rivalry here is not about men. The sisters compete for power, voice, and control of the future. Female ambition is not demonised, and that alone makes this drama refreshing.
💥Romance: Two Red Flags, One Brilliant Dynamic
The relationship between Rong Shanbao and Lu Jianglai is layered and fascinating.
They test each other, manipulate each other, and yet understand each other deeply. Their dynamic evolves from “female-dominant, male-subtle” to “two equally cunning strategists.” This is intellectual attraction at its finest.
🧩Acting: A Showcase of Talent and Transformation
The performances are top-notch across the board.
🌱Hou Minghao proves his remarkable range. While beloved as an immortal or demon in fantasy roles, here he delivers a nuanced, "tea-scented" performance. His ability to shift from the righteous, sharp-eyed magistrate to the seemingly docile, amnesiac servant—his "change of face"—is masterful. He embodies the clever, sometimes scheming, yet ultimately captivating Lu Jianglai perfectly.
💅Gulnazar owns the screen as Rong Shanbao. She portrays cold authority, strategic brilliance, and hidden vulnerability with equal conviction. Her famous "three slaps" scene is already an iconic moment of cathartic justice.
🍵 The Supporting Cast is exceptional. Cheng Xiao (as Second Sister), Zhao Jia-min (Fourth Sister), Chen Ruoxuan, and others bring their A-game, making every family feud and side plot engaging. The chemistry among the entire ensemble, especially the volatile mix of potential suitors and ambitious sisters, crackles with energy.
🎬Production: A Feast for the Senses
The production quality is outstanding. The director's vision shines through in the deliberate cinematography:
🫖 Symbolic Framing: The use of high/low angles to establish power dynamics, symmetrical compositions to create tension, and intimate subjective shots to draw the viewer into the characters' perspectives is brilliant.
🍃Atmospheric Lighting: The careful use of "golden tones" for opulence, crisp "daylight tones" for intrigue, and cold "moonlight tones" for mystery builds a rich, immersive world. The achievement of creating convincing outdoor daylight scenes within a studio is particularly impressive.
🥂 Authentic Detailing: The sets, costumes, and props related to tea culture feel authentic and lavish, grounding the high-stakes drama in a tangible, beautiful historical setting.
🥲A Few Minor Considerations
No drama is flawless, and Glory has a very high bar it sets for itself.
🧶Pacing and Complexity: The dense web of schemes and large cast might require closer attention from viewers. It's not a casual watch; you need to engage with the plot to fully appreciate its intricacies.
🎃Niche Appeal: Its stark, "no truly good people" approach and intense focus on political manoeuvring might not appeal to those seeking a more traditionally romantic or hero-centric story.
🍁Final Verdict
Glory is a triumph. It is a smart, stylish, and powerfully subversive drama that respects its audience's intelligence. It takes the historical genre and infuses it with fresh ideas—matriarchal power structures, role-reversed romance, and unapologetically ambitious female characters. The combination of a gripping, masterful plot, superb acting (led by a transformative Hou Minghao), and exquisite production makes it not just the better of the two concurrent Hou Minghao dramas, but a standout masterpiece likely to be remembered for years to come.
For anyone tired of repetitive tropes and craving a historical drama with bite, brain, and breathtaking execution, Jade Tea Bones is an essential brew. Don't miss it.

Female centric drama with male first billing
You may argue as much as you want, but Rong family was the center of this story. The story may say this is about Lu Jianglai but he felt more like an supporting character. Im sorry to the HMH fans but it really was portrayed that way. Don't get me wrong his character is great but the spotlight was stolen by the family drama or rather the women, either works. I kept on coming back not for the romance but for the family drama, if you're here for the romance, you're in for a hell of a ride.Other than that, I really liked the story, the plot line, the character basically everything about it. I do have to say the last 6 episodes felt a bit off to me, I feel as though they should've introduced his family a lot earlier. The ending though really showed the difference between a male head and a female head of the household. They have their mistakes in the way they run their household and it really showed the consequences. The ending in the dukes place really showed that women stay on top, reminded me of like an empress finally making it to empress dowager, the top of the top.
My favourite grey character would be the 5th sister, hate her as much as you want, but that girl persevered through it all. The plot twists involving her was as much as a human can be, her emotions were understandable. She is a worthy opponent to RSB, and I'm glad that she was taught to be better by RSB. I really was surprised by her ruthlessness though, I didn't think she had it in her to deal with her lover that way. I'm glad she reformed.
I won't lie the romance in the beginning was funny, the reversed tropes are so rarely seen that it was enjoyable. All the characters in the start had me guessing about their motives and their characters, what kind of personality they had, what was the relationships between them. This drama is not simple at all, the way I was left guessing at every whim is so rare. You usually can guess what the process is but this was anything but that. Some characters had personalities I thought was going to play more into the script but it just gave them more depth.
In terms of power, I have to say it is nice to see when a woman is in power. RSB is that woman. She had respect and she earned it, she fought off everything including her family for her family. The way she solved things on her own without really involving LJL shows how capable she is and when he did help, it felt like she allowed him to help her. Usually when they show smart people, they're always dumb when it's time to shine but get saved by their partner. To be fair he did save her, but even without him, I feel as though she would get through it, he just made the road smoother. In the end I was lowkey skipping through the romance, my interest in this drama lied elsewhere. I was heavily satisfied with how it ended, I really thought for a moment they would grow old without each other, and maybe have a child in the middle of their lives. Her resolve to walk away from him showed how much she is worthy to be rong family head and him walking away from the duke family showed his resolve to be with her. She was raised in her position, he was not.
Anyways 10/10 drama for me.

AMAZING PLOT TWISTS AND STORY
HAD TO MAKE AN ACCOUNT JUST TO WRITE A REVIEW ABOUT THIS DRAMA..The aesthetics and the overall vibe is amazing, the casts are also amazing however some characters can be found rather annoying but that just means their acting is good. At some points, it might feel a little extra like the fact that there are many men after the FML but it also makes kinda sense since shes EXTREMELY RICH AND INFLUENTIAL and really pretty.. some characters have their redemption arc. though i do think the grandmother is the biggest problem and that she needed to be taught a lesson.
the plot twists are INSANE, if the ML is genius then the FML is mega genius. i love the fact that the FML doesnt trust the ML easily cause i think thats rather realistic. both ML and FML are cunning. shes also a strong women who doesnt lead people on, she maintains clear boundaries. i love their acting and bond.. the comedy, political rivalry, business, angst, mind-play everything is there.
overall i would rate this series 8-8.5. you need to be a bit patient as you keep watching cause the plot twists keep coming unpredictably. MUST WATCH if u love strong, genius, rich FML X smart, cunning ML.

I Was Clapping at the End: Why Glory Is a Must-Watch
This was a complete drama from the very first episode to the final scene. Start to finish, Glory knew exactly what it wanted to be and it delivered. No wasted episodes. No dragging storylines. No messy ending. Everything mattered, everything landed, and when the credits rolled, I was literally clapping my hands. That is how you know a drama is good.
The pacing was perfect and the storytelling stayed tight the whole way through. Nothing felt rushed, nothing felt dragged out, and the emotional payoff hit hard because the drama actually put in the work early on. Every relationship, every conflict, every decision felt earned.
What really made this drama stand out for me was how smart it was. The female lead was intelligent, cunning, and always thinking three steps ahead. The male lead was just as sharp. Neither of them was dumbed down for the plot, and I loved that. When they teamed up, they were completely unstoppable. Their partnership was one of the most satisfying parts of the entire show.
The writing never slipped. Not once. Just when I thought I knew where the story was going, they would hit me with a twist and suddenly everything changed. The characters did not feel flat or predictable at all. They felt real, layered, and alive.
Nazha, Gulnezer Bextiyar absolutely killed it as Rong Shanbao. I was already a fan, but after this role, I am a full STAN. She owned that character from beginning to end. Neo Hou, Hou Ming Hao, is seriously one of the hardest working men in C-dramas right now. He is everywhere and I am not complaining. He was phenomenal here, and he matched Nazha’s energy perfectly. Together, they just worked.
This is 100 percent a female-empowering drama. Yes, there are a few familiar tropes here and there, but this show handled them in a way that felt fresh instead of tired. It felt different. It felt intentional. It felt refreshing.
I also loved learning about ancient tea growing and the families behind that business. That whole world was so interesting and added so much depth to the story. And the twists? There were so many moments where I was like, oh shucks, here we go again. I was watching every episode on pins and needles, waiting for the next one to drop.
If you had to watch this day-to-day, you know the struggle. And if you get to binge the whole thing without waiting, I am honestly jealous. You are in for such a treat.
There has to be a Season 2. There just has to be! There are way too many stories left to tell. And yes, we need a wedding and babies from the male lead and female lead. Period.
This drama gave us a satisfying ending that matched the journey.
I loved this drama. Loved it, loved it, loved it.
Rating:
10s across the board.
10s. 10s. 10s. 10s. 10s.
All the 10s.
I highly recommend Glory. This is already a serious contender for best drama of 2026 on my drama list!
Just outstanding.

Refreshing - A female centric story from a Man's POV
It is a nice drama, Good plot different and very unique from many other cdramas. The Female centric story from a Man's POV isn't it quite refreshing?
Generally we see a Female centric story from a Women's perspective where we can understand their struggles, sympathise and understand why they have taken this or that decision. But here the Women have different problems from what we see usually, a Family run by women from many generations. These women are proud but value the heirarchy and know their family values or virtues.
They are very open minded women and personally I always think that if there really exists a matriarchial society in the world it would be somewhat like this as well.
Especially the FL Rong Shanbao, the heavy empahasis on her character being strong willed and super smart comes from her own experiances from childhood, though she was forced but she knew from her childhood what responsibilities lay on her hand watching her half broken and a lil gone astray family ( but the root cause of this entire chaos lies in the hand of her grandma). She knows what is happening, why it is happening, How it is happening and What will happen. She knows how to save herself and now her beloved the ML as well.
Now coming to ML, Lu Jiang Lai/ Lu Fusheng, he is initially shown as someone who is very just, knows how to solve cases and is super diligent and impartial. His intial standings tell us that he will never bend to his superiors and abides to the rules/laws set in the society. He will give justice and can never watch injustice happening in front of him. Though he is called stubborn cuz of this principle he follows he does know how to get what he wants without making himself fall in trouble. He is smart as well, but after all he is still a imperial officer and does his job well there is nothing more which drives him, no personal interest no back story whatsoever. He may have following textbook example and his learnings from his master. Coming to dealing persons in real life and family he is not trained in that, that's where he lacked.
The last 9-10 eps for his family's arc, I see that's where he showed his weakness, he never had a true family - was always bullied(Classic HMH storyline hehe.....idk even I love watching him being miserable) was looked down he shut his foster family up but his real family is another case, he was truly devastated and didn't know how to fight back. He was never emotianly down cuz of his love towards FL but due to his real family and their schemes. She always just supported him and tried to mingle in his family as only his wife but never ever meddled in his affairs and decisions until the end when there was no other option.
Idk why they had to make a ML more slow witted in the final arc or may be he was from the beggining cuz his filial piety never came in between in his schemes and job.
It is a very nice drama, if u would like to watch a real stromg Fl rather than a fake strong FL u should definitely watch it. Not only FL this drama has good amount of entertainment, mysterly and even the writers are smart and don't keep everything strainght and simple from the start they know how to engage viewers and make them think more and more. This was a good strategic drama.
Definitlely will rewatch again.

Reminiscent of the palace drama days, so much scheming and so much fun
I went into this show not really knowing anything about the plot or holding any expectations. And to be honest, before it aired, I had seen rumors about it here and there, but I didn't really care enough to look into it. So imagine my surprise when I decided to check it out, shout out to Twitter editors, and found out it's actually a true reverse harem about a matrilineal tea-empire family. There were so many twists and turns, and I kept guessing things wrong. It was so fun! Also, lots of familiar faces. I feel like if you go into this show completely blind, you'll enjoy it. Are there some plot issues? Yes, but nothing that turned me off that much. Additionally, if you like palace dramas/miss the palace drama era, I also feel like you will enjoy this show a lot. All in all, I definitely recommend watching this show. Was this review helpful to you?

Absolutely stunning and ingenious storyline!!!
I saw that a few people had really condemned this series and thats really ok, certain dramas appeal differently to people and i respect that. This is my take on the drama 'glory'First of all, the casting was perfect both visually and on the acting basis. I had seen a lot of people having questions and frequent comments dismissing Gulinazha and although i am not her die hard fan i had still seen some of her works ( the classics of mountains and seas, snow eagle lord, fangs of fortune) making me worthy of commenting on this one : she is really a very great actress capable of executing various roles ( furyher evidenced by glory itself) and id still like to highlight she is not just a pretty face and no acting, she is a pretty face with adequate talent and i cant imagine anyone else as Rong Shanbao ( there might be but i am really satisfied with how she portrayed her role)
Neo Hou : I started this drama solely because i had seen the dramas of both actors but mostly because this was DA YAO's drama. I absolutely and sincerely love how he acts and he is one of my favourite actors especially fangs of fortune, love in the clouds, back from the brink and more to come. His acting in glory was also impeccable but i had seen some people comment that he doesnt suit the official roles and i cant disagree, his acting was indeeed perfect but i suppose that the authority that is brought with the official power really doesn't suit him , it felt like he was straining it into his acting.
The rest of the cast also portrayed their roles perfectly as they really made me feel emotions.
The storyline was seriously great something that is not seen these days like i really havent seen this kind of tea related, women leadinb family kinda drama ( different from romance of tiger and rose where it was a kingdom that was being led by women, here its a family in a kingdom with normal customs portraying the differing rules and customs being maintained against a backdrop of normality).
The Fl and Ml were on par on cunningness and wit all through the beginning although towards the end burdened by familial ties the ml lost to the fl on that aspect. I do agree that the ending 6 or 5 episodes werent really that necessary but it did not diminish the allure of the drama ( although it did diminish the ml's wittiness) .
But i really have to say the story was well executed, i really loved rong shanbao's character, she was the embodiment of a person with values and there were several instances where i really wanted to applaud her. The problems in Rong family stems from the interactions of the rong sisters and especially their grandmother and it was worthwhile to see all of them turning over a new leaf ( although how rong yun'e turned out remains unclear ), Yunxi went from scheming against shanbao to scheming with her or helping her, Yunyin became a bit understanding and Yunshu too ( i can't say she completely let go of her hatred but the changes in her were the most notable).
Each episode were interlaced with mystery, intrigue , comedy and sweetness. Although towards the end each case could be easily decoded by us viewers but id like to disagree that the entire mysteries in the drama could be easily solved by us ( i never expected the ml to fake his own attack, never expected that the little sister wasnt dead, never thought that bai yingsheng was working with shanbao, yan bailou to be wei yao and so on) . There were lots of episodes that had me resltless waiting for the next. The ml was also perfect in portraying his longing for the fl , the way he showed his anger and his very 'not so obvious ' fake hurt acting infront of fl, he also was perfect in showcasing his exceptional thinking. What i loved the most about both leads is that they were steadfast in their beliefs and duties never foresaking either. The fls execution of her noble persona also has to be noted.
For future viewers who are contemplating wether to watch yu ming cha gu, with all due respect, GO FOR IT!!!
Give it a chance before you let it down. It really was a mystery piece and i gurantee you wouldnt get bored. The romance between the leads was also very wonderful, and kind of had that dangerous yet magnetic feeling. They are not the kind of ' ill hold you when you go down ' couple its more like ' i know you can support yourself , i know you can solve it , that you will' couple ( i dont mean like they dont help each other its more like giving space for the other to solve it and not letting them take on the weak role because thats like undermining the porential of the other person).
I do agree there were a lot of miscommunications from the fls part as she did hide a lot of things from the ml but most of it were understandable if you just think. I think i forgot to mention about the osts, it was absolutely litttt and well matched with the series.
Final verdict: stop dilly dallying and go watch GLORY!!!!!

Glory is a drama that mistakes refinement for substance.
Glory is a drama that mistakes refinement for substance. Beneath its elegant visuals and tea-culture symbolism lies a story that is overly predictable and increasingly repetitive. After the first two male-centered conflicts, the pattern becomes obvious and the drama never breaks it. Every subsequent rivalry unfolds the same way: a mild provocation, restrained posturing, a brief escalation, then a neat resolution that restores emotional balance. Once you recognize the formula, upcoming conflicts are easy to predict episodes in advance, draining them of tension and suspense.
The pacing is slow not because the story is meditative, but because it keeps circling the same dramatic beats. Characters revisit the same emotional positions without meaningful evolution, mistaking repetition for depth. The tea-world setting, while beautifully presented, rarely influences the outcome of these conflicts in new or interesting ways it decorates the narrative rather than driving it.
The leads remain composed and likable, but also safely contained. Their romance follows an expected, polite trajectory, and any hint of sharper ambition, jealousy, or moral compromise is quickly softened. No conflict is allowed to cut too deep or last too long.
In the end, Glory is elegant but risk-averse. Its greatest flaw is not that it lacks beauty, but that it lacks surprise. Viewers who enjoy calm, aesthetically pleasing dramas may find it soothing. Those seeking unpredictability, escalating stakes, or conflicts that evolve rather than repeat will likely find it graceful but dull.

Just expect an unwavering female lead, and a solid role reversal theme.
What can i say... this is one of the most solid FL that i'd encounter so far in C-drama. Brilliantly scheming, almost always 10 steps ahead in every obstacle that was thrown at her. But also most of the girls in this drama are cunning. They were never inferior to men. It's refreshing to see this kind of trope that is consistent throughout the show about reversed roles. From the start, FL knew what she wanted and despite all the challenges, her goal remained solid and known. She may retreat at times, but only to look back and scheme some more to take over again. For her cold personality, she was moulded that way so it wasn't surprising even in her expression. She had to be formidable in and out because even in her own family, she was never safe. Then there was the ML. A scheming and cunning gentleman that could be on par with her. ML was warm and expressive in what he wanted. They were mostly opposite in how they showed themselves, but both were understandable. They may express each other's feelings differently but they love each other deeply. FL's way of loving him was not through words and constant affection, but she made him feel it through her support and giving him options in what he wanted to do. She wasn't a typical woman afterall. And ML wasn't the typical type of man who was afraid of showing affection. They just complement each other perfectly. Was this review helpful to you?

So much Sexism
The most distasteful thing about this drama is that its built off of gender inequality, whether its the FL's family that is pretty oppressive towards men, or the rest of the world that is outrageously oppressive towards women. The worst part of this is that instead of promoting gender equality, it almost feels like they are subtly telling us that oppressing men is good. One part of the story that I do think was well done was the relationship that the MLs had with their siblings/cousins. Their was plenty of sibling rivalry, but I really liked how the MLs (eespecially Neo's character) made to go out of their way to maintain good relationships with their siblings and cousins to make sure that their families didn't fall apart. On the flip side, I think they did a very poor job building the character of the grandma. They tried way too hard to make her have a complicated relationship with the FL, and they failed pretty bad. The grandma was very unlikeable and brought nothing of value to the plot.
Outside of that the plot was subpar. When I was watching the show, I furious at the scriptwriter because of how bad the plot of the show was. I could not believe it when I found out that this was the same scriptwriter as the one for Story of Yanxi Palace. This was not her best work. The plot was repetitive, and the last 6 episodes were completely unnecessary. Why did they just randomly add a completely irrelevant storyline at the end of the show. Also the plot was constantly trying to sabotage the main couple, and not in the way that its supposed to. The show keeps pushing the agenda that you can't trust the people you love because they might change in the future. Philosophically I think that's just so silly because you are punishing someone for something they didn't even do yet, and it keeps the relationship of the main couple from reaching its potential. Another thing about the show is that there are no good people. Anyone that you see in the show that you think is a good guy, will become a bad guy, and likely for a really stupid reason that is filled with plot holes.
The cast was excellent, in fact it carried the show. If you are watching for the romance and chemistry between Guli Nazha and Neo Hou, you will not be disappointed. Everyone in the cast plays their role very well and all of the couples have wonderful chemistry. Zhao Yi Qin especially does a fantastic job on his character, and was a perfect casting for the role.
Unfortunately the show was heavily overdubbed. Most of the voice actors did a good job, however production did get a bit lazy and some of the sound and movement of the actors' lips were not always in sync. Thankfully they let Neo Hou do the voicework for his own character. I think that it was a mistake to overdub Cheng Xiao, her real voice would have been a better fit for the character. Oddly enough, they did not overdub Zhao ZhaoYi. This was a mistake. I found her voice to be incredibly irritating throughout the show, especially with how many lines she had. The show would have been more enjoyable had she been overdubbed.
The OST was mediocre. In fact it can't even be considered an "Original Soundtrack" because it was not original. They used a popular song called "Zhe Xian". It's a wonderful song and I'm glad they used it, as it was the best song in the soundtrack, but if the best song in the track isn't even theirs, its not a great look on the production team. I did enjoy the one song that Neo Hou sang, but other than that the songs were mid.
The show has no rewatch value. There is nothing super deep that requires a second watch, and the plot was so bad that it leaves you glad that its finally over. The only thing that could possibly be worth revisiting would be the romance, but even then you would be better served looking for compilations on Youtube.
Honestly, the show had potential, and the cast was amazing, but it was ultimately hindered by subpar scriptwriting.

Disappointing Ending
Ep 31 to 36 were not necessary. They should have ended this drama at Ep 30 with a happy ending (they get married). All of the earliest episodes were revolves around the rong family and then the last few episodes suddenly were about his family. We do not care what or where he is from. We wanted a good happy ending. Episodes 31 to 36 were so boring and it kinda of like dragging it to the end.
