Hard to watch but worth it
This is probably one of the most traumatic series I've watched, the kind that makes you want to pause and take a break because you just can't keep watching. It is a gripping, very emotinally charged story. Also one that makes you cry nonstop. But I think this drama is a must watch. They treat very sensitive topics such as domestic abuse, and power dynamics, in a pretty realistic way. But that is the hard part, the brutal reality. It's definitely something that will make you think and reflect.
I don't think i will rematch this drama in the near future (or far future), not because it wasn't great, but because I don't think I can get through the first episodes a second time. And before watching this, it is so important to be aware of all the triggers, there are quite a lot, and since they are serious topics, it is better the know them before you get into the story.
On a different note, the actors were incredible, they all portrayed their characters so well that it is impossible not to get into the story and empathise with them or hate them or even relate to them. It was truly an amazing drama overall. And I was pretty satisfied with how it ended.
So, to sum it up, I recommend watching this drama, but I insist on checking the triggers before doing so because of the dark themes.

Take the revenge into your own hand and finish what you started.
I found it romantic how every episode title is based on Eunsu and Huisu, showing how strong their bond is. Huisu, as a light and savior to Eunsu during her depressing high school days, now became the one being helped by Eunsu, who tries to break the cycle of domestic violence she witnessed, as she couldn't stand by anymore after doing so all her life. This drama perfectly nailed the suspense of a thriller; the thrill is getting me on the edge of every episode. The way the drama portrayed the realness of domestic violence is very unsettling; it feels so raw and real that at some points I get anxious myself. It was a very hard watch, but I’m glad I picked it up. I hope all abusers die and go through the same hell they gave to their victims.

From Hitchcock-Level Tension to a Fearful, Safe Ending
“As You Stood By” could’ve reached Hitchcock territory. It begins with razor-sharp tension, a minimalist score that keeps you on edge, and a cathartic, brutal confrontation reminiscent of Memories of Murder, Bluebeard, and The Invisible Man.
But the real test of a thriller is what happens after the catharsis — and here is where the series collapses.
The impostor’s sudden transformation into a gangster feels artificial, created only to prolong the plot.
Worst of all, the most compelling character — the sister, a sharp and methodical detective — is minimized, sabotaged, and ultimately punished while everyone else gets a convenient, almost cheerful ending.
A story that began with genuine courage ends as a safe moral fable

Masterpiece
"As You Stood By" is easily my favorite drama this year and ranks in my top five of all time. The gripping story held my attention from the opening scene to the finale.Mr. Jin stood out as the show's hero and the girls' steadfast ally. He provided essential support without ever overstepping, allowing them to take the lead when necessary. He, along with Hui-Su and Eun-Su, are my favorite characters.
The core theme powerfully explored the cycle of abuse and the necessity of taking action to break it. Haunted by her own childhood in a violent home, Eun-Su refused to let the past repeat itself. She devised a drastic plan to stop Hui-Su's abuse by murdering her husband.
The entire cast delivered phenomenal performances, and I was genuinely satisfied with the resolution. Hui-Su's transformation was particularly moving: she evolved from a broken character, unsure if she would survive the next day, to one who embraces life, eagerly anticipating the future with a smile.
10/10!

Could've been better...much better.
I really wanted to rate this series with 8 or 9. Because I've been waiting for it since the first trailer. It reminded me the movie Ride or Die( a bit similar story, but with not very good screenplay, bad characters(not acting) and rather explicit scenes). Then I find out, thay this series is based on japanese novel and there is also a j-drama, based on the original novel, as far as I heard without big changes in the story and this is important, you'll understand later why."As you stood by" took the original novel and created its own story, with powerful message, great acting and cinematography...and ruined storyline.
First 5 episodes were good. Not great, because of some stupid moments, but still good. But then... last three episodes changed the whole story. From thriller-drama about DV, murder and how main heroines tried to get away with this, and how they changed as characters, this k-drama turned into some random thriller about crazy maniacs, more killings, more blood, etc. WHY?? It wasn't needed! Original story didn't have any of this. And screenwriters created this mess by turning one character into bloody psycho, with maniac laughter. What the hell? What was that? It was illogical, stupid, unexplained( they tried to explain it but that explanation didn't really work with the first half of the series)
I also didn't really like the ending...because it felt like it was needed mostly to put important words in the heroine's mouths. And there were also some detailes about the ending, which remained unclear. But all of that is nothing compare to the nonsense I mentioned before. And I enjoyed...let's say the final point, destination where heroines are in the end, but I still think, that it's very naive.
It could've been great 5-6 episode's series. But instead we got not a bad series( pretty good in fact) with weak second half, which ruined otherwise great story. Not completely ruined, thanks to the overall high quality of the k-drama...but it could've been much better.

Wished I hadn't wasted my time
This series started out so well and with so much potential but then it turned on its head quickly. In the end I was left angry and nit gor the reasons one should have been angry. This series could have been an excellent voice about abuse but instead turned into an infuriating story of stupidity. The 3 female leads are ridiculous in their decisions. I am angry about the story this could have and should have told but chose not to. Ugh enough rambling just be warned if you are looking for a story of female empowerment this definately aint it!Was this review helpful to you?

A story we have to talk about
First of all, this is definitely not a series that everyone can watch, as it deals with domestic violence.Eun Su and Hui Su are two friends who have known each other since childhood. Each of them carries their own life trauma, but everything changes when a major event occurs.
I really enjoyed the series and the characters of Eun Su and Hui Su. You grow attached to them and genuinely empathize with their situations.
What I liked the most is how the series shows that domestic violence affects not only the victim, but also everyone around them. People see what is happening but say nothing, and that is what shocked me the most. Unfortunately, this reflects reality: abused people are often abandoned and not believed by those around them, not to mention the police.
The scenes where Hui Su is beaten by her husband are extremely violent, but the actors and the entire production team did an amazing job making them feel as realistic as possible.
Regarding the relationship between Eun Su and So Baek, I saw many comments hoping they would end up together, which really surprised me. Personally, I saw their relationship more as a father-daughter bond or a mentor-student dynamic. Yes, their first meeting is very strange, but it’s not like they were flirting or anything.
The negative point of the series, in my opinion, is the doppelganger plot. It honestly annoyed me. It was predictable, and I felt like it took something away from a series that was otherwise very strong.
Despite that, it clearly remains in my top.

A drama that has lost its soul as its focus on entertainment has increased.
6.25/10I'm gonna make it short and simple :
the 3 first episodes were excellent, but after that, it went downhill.
The writer made the fatal choice to prioritize entertainment over delving into the psychology and sociology of the story, which made me lose interest pretty fast ...
The directing was very good, the writing excellent until it took a less serious, and less rigorous turn.
The cast was also very good, but the writing could've served better scenes for us to watch how good all the actresses and actors were ...
Another drama with such a waste of good potential !

Needed more episodes
When I first started the drama, I didn’t even check how many episodes it had. I assumed it would be a typical 12–16episode K-drama, and honestly, I couldn’t see how they would stretch this storyline (abuse, a murder, and its consequences ) for that long. So when I realised it was only 8 episodes, I thought: perfect, short and efficient.
But after finishing it, I actually believe the show needed more episodes, maybe around 12, so they could explore certain storylines in more depth. The drama starts very strong, but the ending felt rushed and overloaded with events that had little narrative payoff. It’s clear they wanted a thriller-style finale with cliffhangers, but without proper build-up, those moments felt random and disconnected.
❌ Bad
The final episodes felt overloaded with events. It was obvious the writers wanted big thriller moments and cliffhangers, but they didn’t build them up properly, so several plot twists felt random.
The biggest issue for me was Jang Gang. His return made absolutely no sense. At first, I even thought Hui-Sui was hallucinating from guilt. But once I realised he was really there, the character still didn’t add up: suddenly he’s a violent psycho from a gang, even though nothing in his behaviour or background matches that. His motivations, his past, and even his travel situation were confusing and poorly explained.
Another weak point was Jin helping the girls. The drama hints at guilt or emotional attachment, but their relationship is never developed enough to justify the risks he takes. They also mention his dead son, but this detail goes nowhere and has no influence on the story later.
The sister of Jin Pyo, first I want to say I hate her. Her career progression made no sense to me.
How does someone go from police officer to working inside the presidential office?
Also, her complete denial of her brother’s abuse, and her blame of the victim, were portrayed well, but the story doesn’t give her the ending she deserved.
Same for the mother. The hypocrisy of her public speech on domestic violence, despite knowing her son was an abuser, was powerful, but the drama doesn't show enough shame, jail, or accountability for them.
Finally, the courtroom scene left a bad taste. When Eun-So says she blames her child self for not protecting her mother from abuse, it sends a terrible message. A child is never responsible for stopping domestic violence. That line felt careless and unnecessary.
✅ Liked
All the actors were amazing. They completely embodied their characters, and the emotional scenes felt very real.
The first half of the drama portrayed domestic abuse realistically and sensitively: Hui-Sui’s attempts to escape, her fear of her husband’s connections, her isolation, and the way victims feel trapped were all shown very well.
At first, I didn’t understand why Eun-So, who trains in self-defense and even got banned for being too aggressive, suddenly became powerless during real danger. But after reading Minji23 review, it made sense.
In real life, no matter how much you train, a violent, unpredictable attacker doesn’t “follow rules, your body freezes under fear, the pain is real, not controlled like in practice
To conclude, the drama starts incredibly strong with great acting and a powerful, important topic. But the writers clearly wanted extra thriller elements, and in the last episodes, they sacrificed logic and emotional depth for surprise value. The ending isn’t terrible, but it’s far from satisfying — mostly because the potential was so much higher. With more episodes and better development, it could have been excellent. Still, it’s worth watching for the performances and the realistic depiction of domestic abuse.

I think the cast was very well chosen and the story, the script, and the direction were excellent. The only thing I found less convincing was the ending. It wasn’t really bad, but it felt a bit unclear about how many years had passed, and it could have been explained better.
Besides that, I really recommend it. It’s a very good series, and the fact that it has only eight episodes makes it perfect to watch.
The story was really emotional and the scenes were filmed in a very beautiful way.

If you want justice in this world watch it then,it's worth your time!
To begin with, the acting was amazing, every actor did dazzling job!It was so emotional and passionately that it felt so real.Especially Jang Seung Jo(No Jin Pyo/Jang Kang) who did two roles,he nailed both of them. It was the first time seen a drama with him,at first i thoung that they were different actors. Jang Kang turned into to be a crazy man who seems at first just a poor man with kind heart. No Jin Pyo was obnoxious and irrigating. His eyes was so passionate when we beat his wife up. Let's move to the two female protagonists. I love both characters, their acting was incredible! Their cooperation, love for each other for their friendship was awesome. And how both wanted to kill Jin pyo and attained it in the end with so many troubles but they were determined for this. Eun Su (Jeon So Nee) (I seen before in melo-movie another amaizng role of her)putted herself after Hui Su(Lee you mi) and did everything to make her happy and set her free from her husband. As for Hui Su i think she was so scared and frightened but she was kind and happy after her husband died. They both had the courage to do this alone (to killed her husband) without told this anymore or asked for help. They were so independent and strong female characters that you rarely see in korean dramas ! Nevertheless, without So Baek(Lee Moo Saeng) help they couldn't do it completely alone,he help them with his strategies and tactics and with his acquaintances of his. In some episode (latest one's) i thought that No Jin Yeong (jin pyo sister) was nice and would help the girls but it turn to want to kill Hui Su and threatened her and her friend...She played a major role in the drama. A BIG thanks to Choi Gyeong Gu( the detective) that was with jin pyo brother but then he found out that she had deleted an evidence. He also played a major role in the drama. All in all the plot was absorbing, 8 episodes was just perfect. In the 5-6 i got a little bored and I was tired of the whole thing but then the real game started, do NOT stop the show if you get bored the ending will satisfy you so much! One of the best korean drams of 2025!!!Special thanks to all the actors, staff, director and all that worked so hard to this wonderful masterpiece! And also a little message if anyone could ever read this till the end:Hope no woman-girl ever again beat up of some stranger or realtive, may everyone live peaceful and not harm someone. Was this review helpful to you?
A good thriller that opens more questions and awareness.
"As you stood by" reminds me a little of the 1955 French film "Diabolique." Of course there are many differences, but the core premise is basically similar. This series had me intrigued, glued to the TV, and angry. I am trying to keep this spoiler-free, but I will say I may have given it a higher rating if it weren't for the "conveniences" in the plot. Some were actually possible, but some were a stretch."As you stood by" may challenge your thought process when it comes to how to handle a situation where someone is repetitively assaulted and there is no real help. I realize times have changed (for the victims) over time when it comes to domestic violence. I also realize that there are cultural differences in opinion and enforcement. "As You Stood By" is a good thriller that will send a range of emotions.
The acting mixed with good cinematography really hits hard. Even though the script has some conveniences, it does press the tension with multiple layers and a few twists. Props to the actors and production team.
