Overhyped, Lacking Substance
While Bon Appétit, Your Majesty is clearly a cooking-focused show as suggested by the title it felt like it should’ve been more than just food and kitchen scenes. The premise had potential: a royal figure, time travel, and an unexpected dive into culinary arts. But unfortunately, the show fell short in execution. The romance angle was underdeveloped, and the backstory of the deposed queen didn’t go deep enough. There was so much emotional and historical weight they could’ve explored, but instead, the plot just stalled.
After the first two episodes, it started feeling repetitive. Every episode followed nearly the same formula, with very little actual plot progression. One major frustration was the lack of explanation for how his Majesty ended up in the present time — a huge plot point that was glossed over entirely.
Overall, the show had great potential and a unique concept, but it lacked depth and forward momentum. With better storytelling and more character development, it could’ve been something really special.

I can't get over 2 things...
Ok - spoilers.Love the cast. Acting was great. Production was great. Action was great. FOOD LOOKED AMAZING.
BUT...
1) He was legit a murdering tyrant. He had dozens/hundreds of innocent people murdered. And that's really never resolved beyond "oops he realized that maybe wasn't ok." I mean, she fell in love with someone who had women and children killed.
2) The ending of him just showing up AS the King? So they never really resolve his terrible terrible past.
3) "It's a secret... it doesn't matter" felt like it would have been cute in a different storyline, but here it felt dismissive to the fans. It wouldn't have been such a big deal to have him held in the book and released when she returns to the present. OR better yet, at least have his spirit reincarnated or something (which at least dodges the "he's a murderer" thing.)

"Bon Appetit, Your Majesty"? NO, it's "Come look, a travesty"
Ok, first of all, I started this K-drama with high hopes, as an avid K-drama watcher I had been meaning to watch this drama for a while now, It had been reccomended to me by many people and the story SOUNDED interesting. So I started watching episode one, and I was happy for the most part, and then the mings came over and they started dragging it on so much, like half those episodes weren't even neccesary, waste of everybody's time. Also the effects when they were eating the food were very funny but the ogolgye samgyetang one was literally AI and nobody is telling me otherwise because you cannot be that lazy.Yes the Female lead had good acting but it was like, "omg look at me I'm brazen, I can stand up to men, I know how to cook." and then suddenly "Jeonha jeonha jeonha" she played her part very well but it is the writing THAT IS SO WEAK LIKE SOOOOOOOOO WEEEEAAAAAAK. Girl please whoever wrote this absolute crap needs to go in time out.
I liked Gil-Geum in this and I also liked the jester dude he was really nice and had chemistry with everyone, literally everyone, especially that soldier dude who was always with the king. The inventor was the best dude in the show and he needs a raise.
OH GOD KANG MOK JA GIRL I HATE YOU SO MUCH but, she was the best actress out of all of them, that lady knows how to play her psycho characters realllllyy well. Ok the King dude was really good at acting and he was funny during most of it, but it was so badly put together that everybody in this show was BIPOLAR SO DAMN BIPOLAR.
WHAT WAS THAT ENDING???????????????????????
SO RUSHED I WAS CRYING, SO SAD I WAS CRYING , SO DAMN STUPID I WAS CRYING.
bro I literally saw the ending, the bro Yi Heon somehow timetravelled and he gets to live here now and then they go "How did he get here, well thats a secret." THE REAL SECRET HERE IS WHY THE HELL THIS WAS WRITTEN LIKE THIS AND ALLOWED TO AIR AND WHY IS THERE SO MUCH HYPE GOD I SWEAR. I SHUT MY LAPTOP AS SOON AS I HEARD BRO SAY ITS A SECRET, THEN I WENT TO CRASH OUT FOR 5 MINUTES. The first thought I had was whoever wrote this shit was on drugs, high or going through a midlife crisis because what the hell. I hated this ending more than i hated the ending of "Where stars land" .
Lastly I believe all the watchers of this k-drama deserve an apology for having 12 hours of our lives wasted on garbage. and this could come in the form of a special episode BUT YOU GUYS AREN'T THAI BL COMPANIES SO YOU DONT CARE BUT WHATEVER.
Overall, dont watch this drama, please dont waste your time.

too much cooking, not enough story
the beginning of this drama pleasantly surprised me: the culinary theme felt fresh and unusual, which immediately set it apart from most historical projects. that was exactly what drew me in at first. but later it became clear that the writers relied too heavily on this cooking angle. the main plot is built on familiar cliches from other historical dramas, and even those could have worked better if they had been developed properly. instead, the creators stretched out the contests over several episodes while giving too little attention to character development.the romance line feels insincere – the characters feelings appear suddenly, without enough foundation.
that said, i can’t say everything is bad. the story has its own logic, and among the characters i especially noted the jester – a charismatic figure who truly stood out despite his limited screen time. i wish there were more characters with this kind of charm.
so for now it’s a 7/10. the drama has a fresh idea and a few strong moments, but the main story could have been much more engaging if the writers had worked more on the characters, the plot, and avoided the overuse of cliches.

Another beautiful but ultimately forgettable drama
A spirited rom com served with beautiful faces and more beautiful food. Sucked back in time, Ji Young, immediately finds herself interacting with recorded history's worst tyrant that also happens to be a foodie and her skills as a chef save her as she adapts to ancient Joseon and struggles to find her way home. In the process she inadvertently changes the tyrannical king with her soft heart and delicious dishes leading to wonder if she really wants to return to her own time.To be honest I was really disappointed in the romance of this drama. As a romantic comedy I expected the romance to be sizzling but it was luke warm at best and entirely one sided. King Yi Heon completely carried this show for me. I'm here for all the red flagged men that are changed by love and he played that part exceptionally. From his taste palate to his misery this man delivered. He drew me in and I was hooked. Ji Young, however, was just kind of there for me. I did not dislike her but I also didn't find myself as entranced by her like I was with the male lead.
I also found the plot lacking here. They focused so much on the food and so little on the actual story progression. Carrying the food obsession and mind blowing skits that worked in the beginning was very repetitive by the end. Instead of spending as much time on the food they would have benefited from actually growing the romantic chemistry. So much screen time is given to the theatrics of the cooking but little to the actual power struggle and palace inner workings that lead up to the finale. And then you get to the end and you end up left completely underwhelmed. I can forgive giving no explanations for the time travel but the drama even chose to completely ignore Ji Young's reason for being in the hospital. Did the plane crash? Did she pass out in the bathroom? I mean I would have been satisfied if they just said she was in a coma following an accident but it was completely ignored.
Overall a very pretty drama but will be lost in the sea of mediocre dramas that leave no real impression on you.

Greatly overrated unless you are a foodie
Bon Appétit, Your Majesty is one of those titles that’s gained traction mostly thanks to aesthetics, but if you’re not a hardcore foodie, it’s hard to understand the hype. The romance is mildly charming, but the rest of the plot feels like a reheated dish you’ve seen served a hundred times before — predictable, overly sweet, and lacking real substance.Yes, the food scenes are visually stunning — meticulously animated or shot, depending on the format — but that's hardly unique in the age of Food Network marathons and cinematic cooking reels on social media. Beautiful plating does not make a compelling story.
Unless you're in it solely for the culinary eye candy, this one's overrated and ultimately forgettable.

cooking survival show but make it joseon
gonna update this review by the end if I don’t forgetI starters this drama simply because I was bored and had nothing to watch and it didn’t disappoint
the first 2 episodes were funny
in terms of acting wise idk yet but for the amount of criticism LCM has gone through for playing the male lead I think he did well especially that he only had a few days before shooting started
by the time more episodes came out I just realized that this was just a cooking survival show but instead of Gordon Ramsey possibly screaming at you, you can possibly lose your life instead
the editing is really funny cause I was rather shocked whenever they ate the food and just transcend and those edits are just hilarious that I have wondered what in the food porn is this lol
story wise not much to say as there’s still much to see but so far for me it’s decent but fun and entertaining
I haven’t read the original source material but I deeply hope it’s not end in a k-trauma

Great start, mediocre ending
I enjoyed most of this drama, but it wasn't particularly thought-provoking. It had good production, and I liked how each dish cooked by cook Yeong was highlighted in its own episode with its own mini plot. Overall, I feel it fell apart towards the end, as it focused too much on wrapping up the story, and a lot of it felt really rushed. The Ming cooking competition was easily the best part of this series, and it's worth a watch for that, just don't feel obligated to finish it.Was this review helpful to you?
IF INTERESTED IN KOREAN CUISINE IT'S FOR YOU.
The show was aesthetically pleasing....it had stellar cast, both main and supporting casts.Fair warning to someone planning to watch it with the expectations of it being a good old fashion sageuk...well its not.Indeed it has the palace politics, but its not that intriguing. This drama focuses on the food then the romance is secondary and lastly palace/throne politics.I believe it started on a high note then midway it hit a plateau and just maintained it, neither going up or down.I am a person who watches a drama as the episodes drop,so with this drama i watched the last 3 episodes together cause i had no tension build up as the episodes dropped.I survived a whole week without watching episode 10.So with it ending i just wanted to know how it ends but wasn't really pressed about the ending...its an easy watch. Also those who had thoughts that it resembled Mr. Queen were never heard of after the episodes aired because it was WAAAAY different to it.The only resemblance was the chef character going back in time, other than that Mr.Queen remains different. Was this review helpful to you?
Pure fluff
Weak story. Weak plot. Weak characters. Weak chemistry. I have no idea what watched. TOP CHEF mixed with kdrama historical intrigue? The cooking and food part was fun but that’s about it. The love story manifested out of nowhere and it was so awkward. Idk why this kdrama went viral. Nor why it’s rated highly on this site. The reviews were accurate though. Cuz this was a mediocre kdrama disguised as something more. Idk how anyone can even compare it to Mr. Queen or Moonlovers. That’s insulting. Was this review helpful to you?
Joseon / French fusion cooking show
This show has an engaging first episode which was quite enjoyable but beyond that it didn’t live up to the potential or the hype. The storyline is practically non existent, chemistry is negligible and the love story is not believable by any stretch of the imagination. there was just a lot of cooking and ultimately that’s what defines this show.
The time travel resolution at the end was lazy at best and the viewers are presented with a neat bow that’s a bit of a head scratcher.
I’ve scored this 5/10 because I watched it to the end.
