A contrast between my expectations and reality; neither particularly great nor truly bad
At first, I was genuinely drawn to the storyline. It follows two students who are complete opposites, just as the title suggests. One is an introverted academic achiever, while the other is a popular, extroverted campus sweetheart with a passion for soccer. This dynamic sets up a solid foundation for how their relationship develops into a love story. However, as the ploo progresses, I found myself getting bored with its weak execution and pacing. I understand that this isn’t meant to be a heavy, dramatic BL, but even the element of yearning, something Japanese BLs are especially known for, didn’t quite resonate with me here. That said, the twist involving Akira and Kanda was genuinely shocking. I couldn’t help but feel bad for Akira, given the implications of what he’s going through.
On a more positive note, the main leads are undeniably attractive, especially Kanata. I also appreciate when younger actors are cast in student roles, as their natural youthfulness adds authenticity and charm to the characters. While I didn’t expect overly intimate scenes given their age, I do wish the romantic moments had been pushed a bit further for a stronger impact.
Overall, the drama isn’t bad. It has its highs and lows, but it also shows potential for something truly remarkable with stronger execution.

A Really Good Coming of Age Romance
Contrast is a really good yet delicate coming of age romance drama, It's a pity FOD decided to drop all episodes in one go in Japan which honestly killed the hype for the domestic audience and also did not give time for the production nor actors to promote and market the drama. I feel it would've gain more domestic popularity if it was aired normally.I watched the drama without knowing the original source but the youth vibe of the story is captured beautifully. The two MC are likeable yet complex in their own ways. I thought the way the drama handle the grooming situation with Akira is done so realistically well that we, as the audience knows, Akira is never going to realize the damages Kanda had done to him. Akira was at a sensitive age when he feels like by simply existing hurts after being bullied by the boy he liked for being gay. He's young and depressed, and finally, he confides to his tutor Kanda who gives the awful advice of how he, a gay man himself, finds "balance" in life by sleeping with other men. They somehow gets into a secret relationship for years, and we can see how his so called "balance" only further destroy Akira's self esteem when he meets Kanata. He pushes him away despite their attraction because he feels like he's not strong nor pure. He's afraid he can't go through another painful rejection from a boy he likes again.
Kanata and Akira's relationship is full of angst and charms. One is fragile and other is doing all he can to show him love. This is one of those dynamics that is forever loved. The only thing I dislike is the drama giving us all this angst and a few minutes of them being together at the end only. It's probably the one thing JBL has been doing that everyone complains about, and I get that it's how a lot of romance manga are written but sometimes as a drama, it feels like the ending is not rewarding for after all the angst.

Deeply Contrasting
Frankly, I was surprised as to how deep this joint coming of age and coming out story was. It is certainly layered and complex. This had heart and soul and focused on the two main protagonists not just in the here and now but also on their intrinsic struggles that made them who they were. It was a unique approach to the rather typical superficial high school story. This narrative journeys the forming of a relationship between two high school young men in a society where their connection is neither respected nor valued. As sad as the story seems, it is detailed so poetically beautifully that it becomes mesmerizing to watch the two of them only see the beauty in where they are going. By the end, they have accepted each other for who they are and can now love. Their romance just now begins. Was this review helpful to you?
VERY CUTE!!!!! I LIKE ITTTTT
This series was very good like the story, scenery, actors, plot, etc. everything was just chef kiss 😍🥰🤩♥️Japan always make their series so short 😭😔😢😭 like why do they always do this with good stuff. They always cut it short.
I need them to make every episode longer and have every series have many episodes.
And why do they always make the kissing scenes look so forceddd but its fine not all are comfortable kissing the same gender. Anyways, we can for the plot and story not the hot steamy scenes. Overall, I loved it ( ꈍᴗꈍ)

Surprising Japanese BL but a Good Watch Overall
This one is...different and I love it.I'm a sucker for JBLs, so this review might be a bit biased but WHAT?
Honestly, I didn't read the synopsis or anything before starting it and didn't imagine the story would take this turn.
Five episodes in and it's a surprising yet interesting BL. It's unlike many of the high school JBLs I've seen and I love it for that.
So far so good and I can't wait for the other episodes.
Wondering if you should watch it? Stop wondering and start it ASAP

Gave Me Depression in the Best Way Possible
The beautifully warm cinematography lures you into thinking you're safe, only to tear you to pieces by the emotional trauma uncovered little by little in each episode. It's comforting and youthful, and it's bittersweet and suffocating.Few series can capture this vibe. The acting is amazing. This is a true hidden gem this season.

overcoming fear to love
Overall: I enjoyed their different personalities, but wish the tutor character had been handled differently. Based on the manga Contrast by itz which I haven't read and I reviewed the series based on its own merits. 8 episodes about 22 minutes each. Aired on GagOOLala https://www.gagaoolala.com/en/videos/6368/contrast-2026 (not available in Korea or Japan) and FOD in Japan.Content Warnings: tutor/student, over 18/under 18, possible grooming, past bullying
Watch Suggestions (I think this takes out the creepy tutor and focused more on the 2 leads)
- watch episode 1
- episode 2 skip 3:30-4:20 and 20:45-end
- episode 3 start at 3:15
- episode 4 skip 7:30-12, and stop at 21:40
- episode 5 start at 15
- episode 5 stop at 21:45
- episode 6 start at 4:30
- episode 7 skip 3:45-8, sip 13:20-18:30 and 20:30-23:40
- episode 8 start at 1:20
What I Liked
- easy to understand premise
- different personalities
- layered characters
Room For Improvement
- felt the writing was saying it was okay what the tutor did, they mention a 5 year age gap and guessing they are now 18 & 23, they mentioned the tutoring started at the end of middle school which goes 3 years (and then high school 3 years) so the younger guy was likely 15 and the older guy was 20 which is super gross, the older guy knows it was wrong which is why he never told the brother
- multiple cliche running scenes
- rushed ending
- dead fish lip presses
