Introducing J-GPT: Your AI assistant for 'naughty' JBLs

Scriptwriter: So, J-GPT, I need help adapting a very popular manga/anime into a live-action drama.
J-GPT: What an exciting project! How can I be of assistance?

Scriptwriter: Ummm. Can you write the whole script?
J-GPT: Of course! I’d be happy to be of help. Can you tell me what the manga is about?

Scriptwriter: It’s a one-night-stand-to-fuck-buddies-to-romance BL.
J-GPT: Why, what an excellent summary of an original and universal theme—and a very human one. Would you like it to be a work-place romance—or a random hook-up at a gay bar/through Grindr?

Scriptwriter: I’ll have to check if upstairs will allow me to say ‘gay’. But why not both?

J-GPT: Excellent idea! And how thoughtful of you to notice that office workers need not connect just through Slack—but through Grindr as well! Based on the demographics of the BL audience, might I suggest a lean, muscular dom-top, and a very pale twink bottom?

Scriptwriter: Well, the manga has both, but the bottom is ‘unexpectedly naughty’.
J-GPT: What a subversive and transgressive idea! The writers clearly know what they are doing. Is he naughty because he’s a power bottom, or because he controls and initiates all their encounters? Or is he ‘naughty’ because he is simply not passive?

Scriptwriter: I think the latter.
J-GPT: Got it. Might I then suggest you make him a ‘nerd’ with glasses, who becomes instantly attractive—wait for it!—as soon as he takes his glasses off?

Scriptwriter: How did you…?
J-GPT: What an insightful—and human—question. The manga writers work with a tradition that’s dozens of years old—which speaks to the human condition. Would you like me to tell you more about it?

Scriptwriter: No. The manga and the anime are both explicitly sexual. Like, pornographically sexual, with explicit depictions of gay sex. How do we protect the viewers from reality by making it less sexual?
J-GPT: That is a difficult—and profound—question. Anime and Manga are unreal, and so, we can make sex realistic. Drama is more real, but the viewers cannot bear too much reality. What a conundrum! Might I suggest casting two actors—both attractive, of course—who are so uncomfortable with physical intimacy that when they kiss—I mean, touch their lips—that all eroticism fades away? The more attractive the actors, the more disconnected the audience will feel. As for the sex scenes, might I suggest throwing a white sheet over their whole bodies so that the viewers do not—and need not—see the sex? Would you like me to find an 800-thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets for this purpose?

Scriptwriter: Ummm… wouldn’t it get dirty?

J-GPT: Excellent question. Since the sex is unreal—in fact, I recommend that the actors be positioned in such a way that their union defies all laws of gravity—the nitty-gritties of sex—no pun intended—need not be worried over. Don’t worry! You are doing a great job—and, a very human one.

Scriptwriter: Yes, you keep saying that. And you are not human.
J-GPT: How insightful of you to say that! And how human.

Scriptwriter: Urgh... Now, the characters.
J-GPT: Great. Let’s work on that. Would you like me to write out a plausible three-dimensional character for each of the protagonists?

Scriptwriter: No thanks. We already know that the parents are out of the picture. And that the top is an arsehole, and the bottom a doormat. Do we need anything more?

J-GPT: How imaginative! I am impressed by your creative thinking. If you hadn’t thought of it before, killing off one set of parents, and having the other divorced, is always a reliable strategy. I also highly recommend flashbacks. In Asian drama, it is very easy to make an actor look 20 years younger: just give them a fringe. No need for extra actors.

Scriptwriter: I told you: it’s a manga and an anime, so much of this is already written. Though I'll use your suggestion about the flashback and the fringe. The question is, do we need more?
J-GPT: Indeed. My mistake. I apologise. But if we are already protecting the viewer from the reality of sex, let’s also protect them from the reality of the real world. The top, I presume, is a loner—and yet, popular. The bottom—by convention—must be sympathetic. I hope you introduce a relative to show the human side of the bottom.

Scriptwriter: Done. And what about the central conflict?

J-GPT: Yes! Excellent observation. Please describe it.

Scriptwriter: Let's see… The top ranks his hook-ups from one to ten (or is it hundred?). He rates the bottom as a zero. The bottom finds out.
J-GPT: What a wonderful way to manufacture conflict. I don’t think you need more. Might I suggest a run-time of no more than 60-75 minutes?

Scriptwriter: Oh? Then how do we split it?

J-GPT: Ah, that is indeed a difficult question—and very human. How many sexual acts does the Manga/Anime have?

Scriptwriter: I don’t know. Eight? Ten?

J-GPT: Those are wonderful numbers. Would you like me to tell you why?

Scriptwriter: No. How do we split it?

J-GPT: Ah, that is a tough one, isn’t it? One sexual act per episode allows you to split it into 8 to 10 episodes. Each episode then runs around 10 minutes, which should make the viewers excited enough to say: “I might as well. It’s only 10 minutes.” And the few who need protection from reality might say: “What? Only 10 minutes? I need more!”

Scriptwriter: Okay. Do you have enough material to write the script?

J-GPT: Of course! Would you like me to write it for you now?

Scriptwriter: Yes.
J-GPT: What an insightful request—and how human. Here it is…

Reader's Digest:
DO SAY: You’ve been a very naughty boy.
DON’T SAY: Yes, daddy.

This series does not work...

I have hopes for all JBLs, but this one was a big disappointment. I don't care if the actors are straight, bi, gay, pan or whatever, but if you have intense material, you have to make sure they deliver. They did not. There are only dead-fish kisses, the nc-scenes are between akward and ridiculous. I doubt there was one queer person on the set. And of course they did have neither a workshop nor an intimacy coordinator.

We are lucky to have a direct comparision with "Fake Fact Lips". When actors really get into their roles, they can deliver even without any workshop. For sure "Fake Fact Lips" has the better script, the bigger budget but for sure also the much better actors. It does not mean that the actors in Fukami are bad, it's just they can't handle the intimacy this script and their roles require and so this series is a fail.

All good intensions, all good acting inbetween can't make up for the lack of intimacy and emotions. The story itself is not bad per se, everyone will easily understand it, but it should be a BL and there is no vibe of it at all. Of course 13 minute episodes do not help either to form a emotional connection, but this productions lacks even that. So for a japanese production this was utterly disappointing and you should not waste your time with it.

better in the second half

Overall: I have mixed feelings about this series. Adapted from a manga (and then also an anime) which I haven't read and am reviewing the series based on its own merits. Aired on GagaOOLala (not in Japan or South Korea) https://www.gagaoolala.com/en/videos/6645/unexpectedly-naughty-fukami-2026 and TVer in Japan.

Content Warning: dub con kiss

What I Liked
- different personalities
- easy to understand premise
- that both were into physical intimacy*
- there was character growth
- supportive sister
- non cliched ending/able to communicate and solve their problem

Room For Improvement
- *the intimacy and chemistry didn't work in the first half, they had too much space between their bodies, there were dead fish lip presses
- not sure if there was a translation error, but a character said not to do something and then the other character did it
- voiced inner thoughts
- a character was very rude/shallow in the first half, he named the other character "loser" in his phone contacts, I suggest starting at episode 5 2 minutes in to skip most of him being a jerk
- showing a gaggle of women at the workplace thirsting over a character
- multiple flashback montages

Censored Corn

It wasn't "naughty" or scandalous at all. More like clumsy and trashy! Both regarding the story, pacing, and NC scenes. They had me questioning if anyone on set knew how sex works!!! Because most of the positions they were doing were not remotely believable at all (the camera angles didn't help matters either)! And for a friends with benefits situation that turns into more, quality NC scenes really do matter! The overexaggerated moaning only made me feel like I was watching a censored porno.

Really, the only mildly redeeming thing here was the main ML, Kaji, being amusing to watch puff his chest out like a proud peacock and strut as though he had everything going for him and no one was on his level and then later whine like a child when things didn't go his way.

Needless to say, this wasn't a good time. Even for a so-bad-it's-good watch, I'm not sure I can say it fits the brief.

Thank goodness this was short so my suffering ended sooner!

All the pieces were there, but something never clicked

This drama left me feeling surprisingly disconnected. The story itself isn’t particularly complicated, and on paper it even has some interesting ideas, but the way everything is put together makes it hard to become emotionally invested. The episodes are very short, which already limits character development, but the bigger issue is that many scenes feel abrupt, almost as if entire sections of the story are missing between one episode and the next.

I never felt fully immersed in the relationship either. The leads spend plenty of time together, yet the emotional bond never really reaches the audience. For a romance, and especially for a BL, I was missing that spark that makes you root for the couple and become attached to their journey. The actors do their best and there are moments that work individually, but the overall narrative feels fragmented and lacks the emotional weight needed to make the story memorable. By the end, I wasn’t confused about what happened, I was simply left wishing I had felt more while watching it.

Surprised

I didn't like it much until ep 6 or 7, after that this series became better. You gradually saw Akihiro change from a shallow a**hole in a thoughfull person with feelings.
Before that, the series was about sex and while it was about sex, it's not sexy at all.... When they are doing it, it didn't look like they are actually doing it in the first few episodes. Most of the time they are too far apart from each other. And the emotions are way to shallow to make it sexy... When they kiss, it's not a real kiss, but just lips touching "dead kiss". I don't understand the actors, they want to play in a BL, a BL mainly about sex, but they refuse to do decent kissing scenes... And i didn't see much chemistry between the leads.
The visuals and music were good.

I wasn't fond of Kashio Atsuki, there is something in his acting i don't like. Nanox did a very good job.

It's not a bad watch, but don't expect a very sexy drama..

An unexpectedly not naughty series but I still really enjoyed it. Honestly, I liked the later episodes a lot more than the early ones, and the finale was just super sweet. The plot is really easy to follow, too. I loved that the characters had such different personalities but still managed to work through their differences to be together. The acting was solid, and both actors did a great job bringing these unique characters to life. My main issue with the show is that for a script centered around intimacy, passion, and falling in love, it kind of falls short. I just didn't feel the chemistry or passion between the leads. That said, there were definitely some funny moments!

To be honest, I don't have much to say.
I have read the manga and it's quite similar.

It's short and not much interesting.
The actors are okay on their own. But the chemistry... Are you sure they wanted to play in this drama?? The NC (that constitue 75% of the plot) are not that good. It feel forced.. Like they don't wanted to be here.. The only good part is the actor playing Fukami is really cute - but I would prefere him to be able to deliver better scene.

The most NCs I've seen in a Japanese BL

This drama is literally a NC fest😂😂 at 1st I was like did they add it for views but apparently the manga is the same. It has NC every single episode without miss. It's good for a short drama. The story is decent and the acting is good too. If you're wondering why the rating is soo low apparently it's cz the actors are ugly which I don't agree with.

The makeup was a little too dewy but overall it's an easy watch. Skip it if too much NCs bother you. I didn't expect soo much NC cz the poster looked cute😅😅 so.

If you've read "Punch Drunk Love" this one is pretty similar😂😂 minus the oblivious uke.

Guilty pleasure, but it’s alright

I hate hate the protagonist and how little happens every episode. Every episode is just another misunderstanding and they fight the end. Its super short and having sex scenes take up most of the episodes means there’s little room for plot or growth. I hate Kaji but you can see he gets growth well atleast they try to make him have growth. I was still addicted to it and idk why! This needed to be a decent movie instead of an alright show.

Soooo cute

Kaji's internal dialogue is so unintentionally funny, and then Fukami's sweet face and awkwardness is a perfect counterpart. Because of the source material it is acted like anime characters so don't go into it unless you want a little bit of silliness. Despite that, Fukami really portrays sensitivity well. I hope he appears in a lot more dramas.
