The Same High School BL Trope With One Seat Change and I Still Fall for It Every Time

Japan, you have done it again. Give me the same high school BL trope for the hundredth time and somehow I will still be completely hooked. There is just something about Japanese BLs that makes them so awkward, wholesome, and strangely addictive in the best possible way.

As the title says, After Moving Seats, the Boy Behind Me Has a Crush on Me begins with a simple classroom seat change that unexpectedly turns Mayama's quiet school life upside down. Mayama is a loner with no close friends, but he is such a kind, gentle, and adorable character that it is impossible not to like him. After finding a handwritten confession from the popular and handsome Asamiya, he naturally assumes it has to be a mistake. Instead of dragging out the misunderstanding, they meet face to face almost immediately, and Asamiya honestly tells him that the confession was always meant for him.

I really liked how the drama skipped the usual long misunderstanding and got straight to the point. Asamiya knows exactly who he likes and is completely confident about his feelings, which made the confession feel refreshing instead of frustrating.

The first few episodes was incredibly cute, heartwarming, and moved at a nice pace without feeling like a slow burn. The music also matched the soft and cozy atmosphere perfectly.

And can we talk about episode 6? Probably my favourite episode yet. Their confession beside the lake was so beautiful and heartfelt, and then that kiss made the whole moment even more special. It wasn’t a dead fish kiss at all. They are high school students and this was probably their first kiss, so I thought it was perfect for them. It felt innocent, nervous, tender and completely genuine.

“What kind of like? It’s the one where I want to hold your hand, to touch you, to hug you.”

That confession completely melted my heart. There was something so pure about the way he described his feelings. He didn’t need some huge dramatic speech. He simply wanted to be close to the person he loved, to hold his hand, touch him and hug him. Then having their feelings finally come together with that beautiful kiss beside the lake made the entire scene unforgettable.

This is a great series but my only small criticism is that I really wish this was a university BL instead of a high school BL. The actors are 28 and 26, playing 17 and 18 year old students, which is more than 10 years younger than their actual ages.

The characters themselves definitely act and dress like high school students, so it’s really just the actors’ faces and mature appearance that make them look older. You can tell they’re not 17 or 18, and it’s noticeable enough that I had to mention it. I think they would have suited university students much better.

Even though the storyline is one we have seen countless times in Japanese BLs, this series still managed to feel fresh because of its warm, comforting atmosphere and lovable characters. I genuinely enjoyed watching Mayama and Asamiya’s relationship slowly develop from beginning to end, and their sweet moments together made the journey even more special. Now that I have finished the series, I can definitely see myself coming back to rewatch it whenever I need something light, wholesome, and comforting. It has officially earned a place on my comfort show list.

cute but...

This is JBL is very cute and very open. The only point missing is the makeup department. Sometimes they look young and sometimes due to the makeup and the lighting they do not. Of course it would have been better to have actors somewhere closer to their age to portray them. Especially when you have watched "Takaras Treasure" Eito looks soooooo much younger. This is my only major gripe with this series...

Overall it was beautifully done, nice pictures, good vibe and yes, they really kiss which is an improvement over so many other JBLs. The story is not the most exciting but still interesting. Of course they serve all the clichés expected from a BL either in words or in pictures. The unique point is a supportive bigger brother.

Of course there must be drama in such BL, which happens on the end of episode 5 when Asamiya says something stupid and I wanted to punch his face immediately. "What is wrong with you?" At least they did not drag that on, it gets resolved with the encouraging words of Asamiyas friend who supports him from the "shadows". Also Mayama is growing, taking initiative and leaving his inferior complex behind.

This was nice and wholesome. As with most JBLs it's a positive story with a postive vibe. Production quality was good, but as mentioned above lighting and makeup were inconstistent. Especially Eito is superb in his role making the comedic bits believable and not cringe. This series is worth binging.

Maybe I'm tired of the 'popular guy with two or three friends, who always gets confessions from many girls, but ends up rejecting them because he has a secret crush on a shy, unaware, unpopular guy' trope. I feel like the plot is getting pretty repetitive, especially in Japanese high school BLs. It’s not that I dislike it, but it’s nice to see something new.

The series wasn't that interesting either; I only started to enjoy it after 3–4 episodes. I wouldn't say there is no chemistry between the main characters, but it still isn't exactly entertaining. I get that it tried to deliver a gentle, cute high school romance, but somehow it felt dull and boring.

However, some themes like 'being judged by others' and 'still choosing to be kind' really had my attention. Also, it was great to see Konishi Eito again after Takara's Treasure. So, it's just not 'the' series I would invest myself in after seeing so many familiar plotlines.

This plot will never die

This series reminded me quite a bit of "School Trip: Joined a Group I'm Not Close To" & about 20 other anime and dramas. Nothing about it stood out from all of the other Japanese series with a popular, aloof character falling for the shy, awkward, unpopular kid. Even the script was very similar; I wish I had a dollar for every time one of the friends got shocked because Mr. Popular is "never like this with anyone else". I'll give Japan this: when a plot is popular, they milk it till it's past dead.

That isn't to say that I hate this kind of plot; I wouldn't have finished it if I did, but I am getting very bored with it. Give me a plot I can't predict & a script that I don't know word for word by this point. Give me a little drama instead of just insecurity! Put simply, this plot has become so repetitive in anime and dramas that I can't tell one from the other.

This series in particular had nothing to make it stand out at all. Nothing. Not in a bad way or a good way. Chemistry was alright. Acting was good. Supporting characters were there. The script and plot were so repetitive that I honestly didn't need to finish it to know what happened. So to summarize: boring. I was bored. The only time I wasn't was when they went to the bookstore, and that's only because I like bookstores.

Another problem I had was that sometimes the actors looked much older in some scenes and fine in others. I don't know if it was the makeup, the lighting, or both.

That Kiss Actually Landed

After Moving Seats is sweet, funny, and surprisingly good at not wasting your time — which, for a Japanese high school BL, is already more than I expected. It's sweet, funny, the misunderstandings actually make sense, and most importantly, I genuinely enjoyed watching Hare and Kosei fall for each other.

But I'll be honest: what surprised me most was the kiss.

Japanese BLs can sometimes be very good at building romantic tension and then become strangely cautious when it comes to physical intimacy. And maybe that's a personal thing, but when a series spends all that time convincing me that two characters are falling for each other, only to give me a kiss that feels like two people briefly pressing their lips together, it can completely kill the emotional payoff for me.

So when Hare and Kosei finally got there — and the kiss actually landed — I genuinely giggled. And then they gave me another one.

It sounds like a small thing, but it made a huge difference. The physical intimacy actually felt like a continuation of everything the series had been building rather than something the show suddenly became afraid of.

I also really liked how the series handled their misunderstandings. They were never so dramatic that I wanted to shake the characters, but they also weren't resolved instantly just to move the plot along. They felt believable for who Hare and Kosei are, which made the relationship much easier to invest in.

And I especially appreciated the conversation near the end about whether they should tell their friends. For a moment, I was fully prepared for the usual final-episode secret relationship drama. Instead, Kosei simply doesn't want to pressure Hare, while Hare is able to clearly express what he wants for himself. It was a surprisingly mature little moment in an otherwise very fluffy show.

Is Kosei's reason for falling for Hare a little superficial? Absolutely. “You're the first person who saw me rather than my looks” isn't exactly the most complicated character motivation. I did briefly wonder why none of his male friends apparently managed that before Hare. But honestly, I knew what kind of romance I was watching, and I was perfectly happy to go along with it.

My only real complaint is that, like so many good Japanese school BLs, the series ends exactly where I wanted it to continue. Seeing them fall for each other was lovely. I just wanted to see what happened once they actually had a relationship.

Still, this was ridiculously cute — and, for once, the kiss gave me exactly the payoff I was hoping for.

spectacular, give me 14 of em right now

school trope AND konishi eito what a combo
key tags: school life (high school), stoic seme, shy uke, fluffy, light-hearted

Story 8/10: It's the classic JBL high school trope of popular boy likes shy, friendless boy for some inexplicable reason and relentlessly pursues him, and I eat it up every damn time! There were three other school-themed JBL's coming out at the same time as this one, and I will say this one kept my attention the most (yes I liked this more than popular serizawa sue me). I find it to be slightly more mature and the cast really appeals to me in terms of acting and aesthetics. They aren't shy about playing towards the more sexual side of things in a way that is still PG-13, there are some words and actions that occur where I'm like oh ok did not know we would be moaning in gym class today.

Acting/Cast 9/10: KONISHI EITO!!! (who plays Mayama). What a beautiful man. Genuinely the epitome of classic Japanese uke. I am so happy to see him here after falling in love w/ him from Takara's Treasure and he definitely acts the best in this (sometimes over-acts, in any scene where he's hurt/sad, it looks like someone genuinely punched him in the stomach lol). Gennosuke (Asamiya) does okay, but I think he over-does the stoic/un-emotional seme thing and it can make his character a bit flat, BUT I find that when he has scenes with Mayama alone, their chemistry does shine through. Also, they have him shirtless at one point and once that happened my jaw was actually on the floor and after that point I somewhat stopped caring about his acting.
The side characters are great and both actors do a really good job at giving some comedic relief and playing believable high school students!

Music 8/10: They do a great job at utilizing the music! The outro song is super catchy and I never found any of the background music to be distracting/ill-fitting.

Rewatch Value 7/10: I can't personally see myself re-watching this anytime soon, but wouldn't complain if I had to. I would definitely rewatch w/ friends.

Overall 8/10: I enjoyed this show a lot! I would recommend watching, especially if you are into school life BL!

***Spice Level 4/10: Nothing crazy, but enough to the point where it leaves me satisfied. I would classify their kissing as sensual and some of the lines related to dirty things definitely makes this teeter the edge of what I would consider PG-13.

Title: A Gentle Story About Love That Doesn’t Change

This series occasionally felt repetitive in the middle, but the final episode brought everything together beautifully.

Asamiya’s love is intense and sometimes overwhelmingly heavy, while Mayama faces it with complete sincerity. Their relationship becomes especially touching because Mayama does not simply accept being protected—he finds the courage to trust his friends and openly choose their love.

I also loved how important friendship was to the ending. When Mayama finally told Sakaki and Tsunekawada the truth, their response showed that nothing between them had to change. It was a gentle reminder that coming out does not always have to end in rejection or drama.

The story began with a seat change and ended with love and friendship remaining unchanged. Even the principal’s homemade bagels improved along the way! A warm and satisfying finale.

CUTEST DRAMA EVER? (WOULD RECOMMEND‼️)

Asamiya and Mayama are PERFECT for each other and I think it’s so adorable how gentle Asamiya is with Mayama. Gentle yet Possessive, almost reminds me of Watarai from School Trip! It’s absolutely worth watching if you liked School Trip, even if you haven’t seen it, go watch it! It’s absolutely beautiful and also realistic, the chemistry is definitely there and I‘M SAT. Even the side characters are PERFECT! Hayate Iijima from Super☆Dragon as Tsunekawata Hikaru, and Ken Hiramoto from DXTEEN as Sakaki Tōma is a perfect match. The characters’ personalities actually match the actors‘ personalities as someone that stans both groups of the side characters. I do think though that Tsunekawata and Sakaki have a lot of chemistry together and although it’s not likely that they’ll get together throughout the episodes THE CHEMISTRY IS DEFINITELY THERE! Both supporting casts have enough screentime for my liking. The only thing that bothers me is the fact that THE EPISODES ARE TOO SHORT!! I’m rooting for this Drama and especially for my two Oshis, Hayate Iijima and Ken Hiramoto🥹🙌

A MASTERPIECE ??

MAYAMA IS SUCH A CUTIE PIE I WANNA PUT HIM IN MY POCKET🥹🥹🙏🙏, ALSO ASAMIYA IS SO HOT LIKE OMG!? They’re like genuinely made for eachother, and their chemistry is CRAZY AF‼️ This drama reminds me of School Trip but a softer version🥹Im really excited for the upcoming episodes and count the days and hours ‘til another episode is released😋😋If I’m honest I'm rooting for the two side characters Sakaki and Tsunekawata aswell🫣🫣 They have so much potential and I hope they end up together aswell🙏🙏And also NPC being the OST makes so much sense, since it matches the concept of the drama really well‼️This is definitely worth watching and I’d 100% Recommend😌

I honestly have zero clue what the creators were even trying to accomplish with this series! It feels like they just took random, recycled ideas from every successful school drama before it, mashed them together, and slapped on an absurdly long light-novel style title just to clickbait new viewers into watching.

I literally could not stop comparing this to School Trip the entire time. It is the exact same tired formula: the most popular guy in school suddenly falls head over heels for the quiet outcast over the most trivial, ridiculously simple interaction, and before you know it, he's hanging out with his popular friend group. The entire setup gave me total deja vu! And can we talk about the whole "sitting back-to-back in class" dynamic? It’s not fresh, it’s not innovative, and we’ve seen it done a hundred times already.

I hate to say this but, It was basically the final straw for me. Between the copy-pasted tropes and the lack of originality, I think I’ve officially hit my saturation point with Japanese series for now. I need a palate cleanser! I'm definitely putting J-dramas on pause for a bit and switching back to other Asian series to get some actually fresh storylines again.

A Little Werewolf and His Guardian Dracula ??✨

Honestly, this is such a basic, tropey series that live-reads like almost every Japanese high school BL out there... but who cares? I ATE IT UP WELL! 😭🍽️

I absolutely love the pure "sunshine and sunshine protector" dynamic between Asamiya and Mayama. Watching Asamiya aggressively but gently look out for him gave me total little werewolf and guardian Dracula energy. It just makes me so glad that soft, selfless people always deserve their own protective guardian in these stories.

Also, can we talk about the other two boys in their friend group? I love them so much too! They brought such a fun, grounding foundation to the whole vibe.

It’s just a nice, cozy, cute little series with zero unnecessary heavy drama. A total comfort watch from start to finish! 💖

The cutest seat change ever

This was such a cute and wholesome watch. It has that unmistakable charm that Japanese BLs do so well, where the story is simple, soft, and full of small moments that slowly make you fall in love with the characters. The romance was innocent and genuinely sweet, and I couldn't help smiling at all the awkward interactions and quiet glances between the leads. The chemistry felt natural, and I liked that the drama didn't try to overcomplicate things with unnecessary drama. Instead, it focused on the excitement of first love and all the little moments that come with it. I only wish we had spent a bit more time with the characters because I grew attached to them so quickly. Even so, it was a heartwarming, feel-good BL that left me with a smile from beginning to end.
