Ahn Eun Jin reveals why she chose 'A Love Other Than Yours'

KBS 2TV's upcoming Saturday-Sunday K-drama A Love Other Than Yours released a written interview with Ahn Eun Jin ahead of its premiere. 

A Love Other Than Yours is a realistic, relatable melodrama that tells the story of a couple entering their tenth year of relationship who begin to experience unexpected emotional changes within a bond that felt familiar. 

Seo Kang Jun and Ahn Eun Jin play Namgoong Ho and Lee Mi Do, respectively, a couple who have been in a long-term relationship for 10 years.

Ahn Eun Jin takes on the role of Lee Mi Do, a once-promising film director who has lost her confidence after one project after another fell through. Lee Mi Do has loved Namgoong Ho (Seo Kang Joon) for a long time, but she is torn between her dreams and her love because of the practical hardships she faces.

Ahn Eun Jin explained why she chose the project: "It is a story that people can relate to regardless of generation or era, dealing not with a beautiful fairy-tale-like plot but with realistic love and growth."

She said that when she first read the script, she found herself thinking, "What will happen to Mi Do now?" Ahn Eun Jin added, "I thought that I could portray her well because I really relate to Mi Do and could immerse myself in her character."

Ahn Eun Jin said one of the drama's defining features is that it doesn't hide its characters' emotions. She explained, "In melodramas, we often see characters make beautiful and morally right choices, but this drama is different. It delves into even the emotions that one would absolutely never want anyone to find out about in great detail."

To portray the relationship between Lee Mi Do and Namgoong Ho, Ahn Eun Jin also had many conversations with Seo Kang Joon even before filming began. "We did a lot of script readings even before filming began, and on a personal level, we also made an effort to get to know each other and become more comfortable with one another."

She said that as filming continued, the two actors’ chemistry also became more natural. "At first, we talked a lot to become comfortable with each other, but now we're so in sync that we hardly need any explanation."

Speaking about Seo Kang Joon, Ahn said, "He's the type of person who is very considerate on set, which allowed me to act even more comfortably. I was really grateful to him from the beginning because he made sure I never had to feel conscious of him or watch his reactions."

Behind Lee Mi Do's continued doubts about her relationship despite loving Namgoong Ho lies the frustration surrounding her own dreams. Ahn explained, "Namgoong Ho is Lee Mi Do's other half. She loves him so much that nothing could ever tear them apart," but added, "Deep inside Lee Mi Do, there is a strong sense of inadequacy. She has always wanted to make films well, but she fails time and time again."

In the drama, Namgoong Ho supports Lee Mi Do's dreams, but he does not fully understand all of the frustrations and setbacks she experiences. Lee Mi Do feels lonely in this situation, while Namgoong Ho also grows weary of the recurring conflicts and arguments. The choices they make about the relationship they have maintained for 10 years will be a major part of the story.

Ahn Eun Jin introduced A Love Other Than Yours as "a drama you can turn to when you find yourself wondering whether your relationship is heading in the right direction."

She continued, "I think that by seeing various forms of love, viewers will be able to feel both the preciousness of the person by their side and anticipation for new relationships. The choice is up to each individual, and each person must also bear the responsibility, but I believe you will also find comfort and hope through the characters as they go through that process."

A Love Other Than Yours premieres on September 12. The K-drama will be streaming on Prime Video.
