Because they completely reverse everything...chirisu:
It's my #1 highest rated RR drama for a reason xD Haven't found anything that comes close to how well-done the matriarchy and role reversal was in this drama. And FL was such a badass, omgggg, she ate that dom CEO role up like it was nothing.
I did notice that it isn't for everyone. Most of the people I recommended it to had the same reaction you did, which is valid.
I'm personally not the biggest fan of matriarchies made exclusively for social commentary (mostly for that same reason. I like my social commentary to be more subtle, but *shrugs*), but those seem to be the only matriarchies that exist, so I'll take it. I do think TOHoMaY is amazingly made because it honestly doesn't do anything very different from 'regular' dramas, it's just the roles being reversed that makes people uncomfortable, and that's pretty much the intended point, so... Big kudos to them for actually committing to the bit and not half-assing it like all others do... *side eyes*
Maybe I'm also more tolerant of such themes because my very first matriarchy drama was Man's World (Indian drama), which was basically TOHoMaY but heavier. After that, all matriarchy dramas are lowkey chill for me xD Talk about a drama I would not easily recommend even if it's super RR... It even has mpreg
Was this your first matriarchy drama?
hi Arclei, wanted to ask you if you already submitted the entry page for this mini-drama?chirisu:
Yes, I did! I submitted the page about 3 days after my post, so about a week ago now. New titles take a while to be added because there's a lot of content for them to go through (from what I've observed... about a month, give or take). I'll post about it here once it's added ^^
my only reference was "50 shades of grey"unbeliebubble:
You poor soul... T_T I never watched this movie, but I've been alive long enough to have heard about it and know that it's as bad BDSM rep as it gets...
I often saw Love and Leashes compared as the actual good introduction to BDSM, and I honestly couldn't agree more. BDSM gets a lot of bad rep for being weird and taboo, especially in fiction; it's used almost exclusively as this dark and nasty thing, but it's really not all that. Sure, it has the potential to be dangerous, but most things do (they even show this in the movie through FL's friend).
I already watched L&L twice, and I adored it both times. It's a fantastic romcom, great role reversal representation, AND great BDSM information. Could be one of my fav movies tbh
If it wasn't RR, I might not have seen or enjoyed it as much.chirisu:
Same for me. Wouldn't have bothered if it wasn't RR, even if the rep was good. I was already well aware of BDSM previously, so for me it wasn't shocking so much as greatly appealing. The RR community has close ties/a lot of overlap with the GFM (gentlefemdom) community, so it's basically impossible to find one without the other, so yeah, needless to say, the topic would be found in both.
Glad you enjoyed it, regardless of its atypical themes ^^
This photo's title is "Begin Again". Is that an RR drama? Just curious because the photo's super nicechirisu:
Yes! It's basically the RR version of the "rich dominant CEO x nice poor girl" trope, at least until like ep 22 or 24... then it does a time skip and screws everything over. I dropped it, so idk how it ends, lol. FL does have some red-flag tendencies throughout the drama, so be warned. ML is very mommy bf-coded. I ranked it pretty high on my RR list.
Was this your first matriarchy drama?Arclei:
Yes, it was. I am still gonna finish it but for now I started two other things, the Goukon one and Love Scout. One ep each for now. I'm interested in Love Scout. It's been years since I watched het kdrama and I guess it had to be RR for me to watch it. So far, so good.
I ranked it pretty high on my RR list.Arclei:
That's cool. I've seen your RR lists, that's where I got all these titles to watch from. :)
I might watch it.. for now my hands are full with these 3 RR titles, the matriarchy one, Goukon one and Love Scout. I expect to finish them this week, maybe. Depends on how invested I get in them.
I do believe the Goukon one (as it has too long a title I'll just call it that) is a bit over-the-top, but it's funny, for a while. Love Scout is more mature, I love that for them, the style fits this type of drama very well. As for matriarchy one, maybe I'll finish it tomorrow. For now, lemme see more of Love Scout. Even if the episodes are 2 hours each, it's worth it.
Yes, it was.chirisu:
Ah, I see, understandable xD Might not be a bad idea to start with a diff/lighter kinda matriarchy drama to get used to the trope first.
that's where I got all these titles to watch from. :)chirisu:
❤️ Glad my lists are useful!
Love Scout is a delightful but slow watch. A wee bit too slow for my taste (the 1+ hr eps definitely don't help) XD Have it on-hold for a while and can't seem to find a moment to pick it back up, haha. It's delightful, RR rep, tho. I love it so far! There isn't enough CEO FL x secretary ML content out there 😔
I agree that All-Guy Mixer is quite campy. Even for a jdrama xD I wasn't in the mood to continue it back when I started, even though the mascgirl rep is *chefs kiss*
Hope you enjoy your three watches ^^
it's as bad BDSM rep as it gets...Arclei:
As someone who has consumed BDSM literature for over 15 years. I agree with your point; this series was a complete failure and
did not succeed in presenting a positive representation of the community. It’s not just these specific titles, but a variety of others that could potentially put at risk those who are curious about exploring BDSM. I wish that more authors and screenwriters would channel their efforts into educating individuals about the lifestyle and the risks involved, which includes the necessity of mental health check-ins. Merely asserting, 'You gave consent, so everything is fine,' is grossly inadequate. This mindset can lead to situations where individuals overlook their partner's needs and emotions. Additionally, the gaslighting involved—like implying that such behavior is attractive—STOP that's not cute its abuse.... it genuinely frustrates me.
I didn't know there were safe ways to do bdsmchirisu:
BDSM just like any other intimate activity, can be safe or unsafe, it really depends on the two people involved and the fact that the dom (regardless of gender) respects the limits set in advance, and has educated themselves ( like actual education and apprenticeship from experienced doms, not the crap scenes in adult movies) to understand the way that bodies react or people respond so they know what to look out for.
I find BDSM on screen to be targeted for the male gaze 99.9% of the time, with the goal of titillating/ shocking/ adding ratings value than anything real. I know I have watched Love and Leashes long time back so I don't remember it in detail, but I am happy you found it educational.

Girl on point!!!amdream_weaver:

Haha, thanks! This might come off as a bit random, but I just took a look at your profile page and I'm intrigued which drama you rated a perfect 10. I also tend to be someone who rarely gives high ratings. Since 2004, I've been watching dramas and have only awarded about 16 or 17 perfect scores out of 380 titles. People have mentioned that I'm a tough rater because many of the popular and highly recommended dramas either get dropped or receive low scores from me. I’m not sure if I’m too critical, but if a drama doesn’t have a gripping storyline or fails to make me laugh until I’m in stitches, I usually rate it a six or seven. I prefer not to give dramas a score below five, as I think that would be too harsh on the cast who likely put in a lot of effort into their performances.
I'm intrigued which drama you rated a perfect 10Simi_Tutu:
New Life Begins is my perfect 10. Its marked as Historical, Comedy, Romance, Life, however what it really is, is a sismance. and not just between 2 characters but 6 or 7 and done so so so well. A story of what being a woman really means and to create the bonds of sisterhood that look past circumstances, and status and what you can get out of it.
The RR game is strong, as there is a couple where the prince initially tries to wear the pants in the fam, for like 3 .4 minutes on the wedding night and then its cute malewife all the way. All their scenes are cute!
And the story is written really well, addressing deeper issues of post partum depression, women's careers, domestic violence, financial independence, women policing women on behalf of men etc. and heavy subjects as they are, are handled brilliantly.
The comedy is adorable!!
I am a tough rater and I am okay with that. I have dropped many many highly recommended shows that others swear by, and regularly appear on top 10, most watched lists etc. Each person is different in what they look for in their screen content so everyone's scale is different.

Thank you for accepting my friend request. I look forward to having many meaningful conversations with you in the future. I truly enjoy discussing dramas and sharing thoughts with others. About your top 10 title, it definitely seems like something I would enjoy. I love dramas that explore profound subjects, whether they are about daily life or political views. It's intriguing when a drama can challenge my opinions and stimulate thought, so I will certainly be adding it to my PTW list. This is a title I haven't seen before.

I am on it, discovering series and movies like these. I think I can add Love and Leashes to that list.
Maybe I'll make a MDL list about them? hmm
Unrelated but I started watching Begin Again! One ep in and it's so good! I'll start something else right now (have yet to be decided, but it'll be RR), but I am definitely looking forward to watching more episodes.
Maybe I'll make a MDL list about them? hmmchirisu:

Made one. Most of them are gay, but some are het. No lesbian content yet.
I'm thinking Albino should fit in this list... as far as GL goes. But I haven't seen it yet.
These titles are difficult to watch in their own way... please be aware they contain triggering content.
Also made a list of RR titles I watched. There's not many on it, some I dropped w/o any good reason I might pick them up again, finish them and add them to this list. https://kisskh.at/list/1ep0Jol4

Completely agree! I'm so tired of everything 'other' being made out to be this dark and nasty thing or this ridiculous thing not to be taken seriously (I'm very much looking at you here, China).
omg why didn't you tell me Gong Jun is the ML in this one??chirisu:
Ahahahaha, my bad, my bad xD He was very pookie in this drama, and that's the only drama I've seen him in since, lol
Unrelated but I started watching Begin Again! One ep in and it's so good!chirisu:
Eyyyy, glad you like it! ^^
