 ZhouYanRan:
I really hope everything will work out for both couples

(re "Head 2 Head") I wouldn't worry too much: This is the kind of BL that generally comes with a guaranteed happy ending.

P.S. I quite like Surf & Java. Looking forward to seeing more of this new pairing.

Day 8 December BL Challenge: Favorite Japanese BL 2025

At 25:00 in Akasaka season 2   has been an unexpected crush of mine. The evolution of both leads was well depicted, and the reflexion on ambitions, on performing on stage is not so common.

 dora:
Anyone who has not seen Maurice should check it out, although the ending is bittersweet. I didn’t consider it so bad but it came out in an era of ”bury the gays” so I was just happy no one died. It was a low bar. But it is an absolutely gorgeous film.

i was thinking about whether it was the first gay romance I ever saw and im not sure. Ang Lee’s original version of The Wedding Banquet (1993) may have been the first. That is actually a HE and very sweet. Watch that too!

Maurice is truly a stunning film! I think the ending was fitting for it. Although bittersweet yes. I wish we could get rid of the "bury the gays" trope. It's very old-fashioned.

Thanks for the recommendation! I will definitely check it out. Brokeback Mountain from Ang Lee is my all-time favorite movie <3

Day 8: Favorite Japanese BL of 2025

I Know it's not finished yet but id pick therapy game or punks triangle

@Simi_Tutu I totally forgot this masterpiece. I watched it as one of my earlier bl dramas. You described it so beautifully

Day 8: Favorite Japanese BL 2025

Our Youth is my favorite, but overall jbls were great this year

Although I'm disappointed with Kamimura Kenshin 😒

 Benizakura:
Our Youth is my favorite

Yes! This series has become my second favorite of the year. The writing was executed so beautifully that it truly tugged at my heartstrings. Haruki's character, along with the way those around him interact and perceive him, was portrayed in such a profoundly emotional manner that I haven't felt this connected to a character in quite some time. I find myself completely captivated by the acts of kindness and the love language that Jin reciprocates towards Haruki.

This series excels in highlighting the darker aspects of societal expectations , abuse, social isolation: and the immense pressure individuals face to conform to these expectations, even when they conflict with their true desires. Both characters experienced remarkable development throughout the story, and the film created at the end, based on their journey, would undoubtedly be a short film I would cherish in real life.

The special episode that followed the series added even more layers to their relationship, enriching the narrative even further. I was utterly enamored with it and found myself wishing it would never conclude. I am certain this is a series I will revisit time and again, even with the challenging scenes depicting child abuse; despite that, this series was truly exceptional.

My Stand-In 10/10.

One that I couldn't stop watching! It was a truly binge-worthy show. And UP... 🔥

Can't believe I'm saying this but I'll have to think about which JBL is my fav for 2025 and come back later with an answer. 😆 🤣 🤔

DECEMBER 2025 BL Challenge

Day 8: Favorite Japanese BL of 2025

When It Rains, It Pours -

Day 8 December Challenge: Favorite Japanese Bl 2025  I really liked Our Youth and Our Youth: After Story. Having an alcoholic father who beat him, I was not surprised Hirukawa  was doling out violence at school. But he was also misunderstood; that perv of a teacher deserved it. Even being forewarned of Hirukawa's reputation, Minase still decided to be friends with him. Maybe seeing him getting beat up yet not defending himself, Minase saw Hirukawa in a different light.  So the lonely, neglected Minase and the abused, unmotivated Hirukawa slowly formed  an unlikely friendship. With the support of this friendship, they started to heal their wounds and eventually became intimate. Hirukawa's tremendous character growth was somewhat unexpected. I wasn't sure how he would fare living with his mother, but her stability and encouragement enabled Hirukawa to pursue his dream to be a filmmaker. I also felt that his years away from Minase were necessary for his growth; Hirukawa wanted to stand beside him as an equal and likely felt the class difference between them was too vast. I'm a total sucker for second chance romance in dramas and I loved the HEA for this couple.

Honorable mentions: When It Rains, It Pours (serious),  School Trip: Joined a Group I’m Not Close To  (fun, on-air)

DECEMBER 2025 BL CHALLENGE
Day 8: Favorite Japanese BL in 2025

I forgot this is about BL released in 2025. Fuck, okay. I'll choose The Journey to Killing You, just because.

I have seen 3 JBLs from 2025. Not much, but the other two aren't so good. So, yeah.

 Benizakura:
Aah Young Royals <3 I wish I could erase my memory and watch it for the first time again xD One of my all-time favorite lgbtq+ series 💕 Highly recommend it to everyone who hasn't seen it yet!
