Any interest in a Thai supernatural mini-challenge for next year?

Would anyone be interested in a Thai supernatural/paranormal/horror mini-challenge for next year? (As a companion to the TDC Watch Challenge of course, not a replacement.) A mini-challenge too, not a big one. Very flexible, do what interests you or use it to categorise what you watch.

There's a lot of Thai supernatural which isn't scary so it would be possible to do most of the mini-challenge while avoiding gore and typical Horror. There probably should be a bit for that sort of thing, but also some of the different themes which come up in Thai ghost stories. I am a bit of a wuss for most horror, but I love a lot of Thai supernatural.

We could work together to suggest titles and help each other find ways to watch older movies. Maybe some interesting conversations could come out of that.

I'll put some ideas I've been mulling over in a reply. If there's interest, that can become the Work in Progress list of categories//prompts.

Possible prompts/categories - movies, series, lakorns, shorts. I'm open to including things like books and anime too but don't know enough to make recommendations.

By region, by range of years - similar to the TDC Watch Challenge, though maybe something like 3 out of 6 regions. (Or if you wanted 3 filmed in Isan, I will fully support your decision to use a Region category this way so long as you tell me where you found them to watch :D Except for The Medium. Once was plenty for that.) Years could be before 1999, 2000-05, 2006-2010, 2011-2015, 2016-2020, 2021-2026 and 3 out of 6 for that too. Unless you want to do more of course.

By genres - not sure how best to do this, though I am seeking evidence for my hypothesis that Thais will never meet a genre they can't put a ghost in. Maybe just any 3 genres broadly speaking.

Sub-genres? What do we call this? - Big House Setting, Oppressive School with Strange Things Happening, Nang Nak + adaptations, Ghost story which turns out to not be scary at all and is really about grief. Ghost story which turns out to not be scary at all and is really about love. Any more? Those are ones I've noticed.

More conventional, less Thai-specific things like Gore. I have much less interest in that but it should have a section. It can be small because Thai supernatural doesn't match up all that well with conventional western category boxes. Black magic, Possession, Gore, Death/murder, Revenge?

Comedy-horror needs to go in here somewhere because Thai comedy-horror is its own wonderful zany thing.

Ghost in a not-supernatural title.

Maybe something to prompt people to watch one (or more) of the classic Thai ghost or horror movies? Nang Nak, Pee Mak, Shutter. What else? More suggestions welcome.

Bumping this as I'm thinking a lot about Thai ghost stories again as the completely-not Thai weather here becomes autumnal.

Would there be any interest in a Thai Supernatural & Horror Club? Mostly a thread or two for enthusiasm and recommendations, other thoughts, whatever.

For those of us in the west, would it make more sense for a mini-challenge to begin 1st October instead of January?

Yes of course.

Do action series with black magic like "Khun Phan" movie franchise fall under this? The main character is based on a Thai living super hero. The legends insane and fandom is quite knowledgeable. If it is it will cover a lot of action, border stories.

Alternatively, you could also turn it into a general horror challenge and have a section dedicated specifically to Thai horror/supernatural. Up to you, I'm down either ways ^^

Niche and not specific enough can be a total wash. The more specific within a niche, the more likely it is that we find things to talk about with each other. Plus it's a good niche for movies, and it's easier to fit a movie in than a series or lakorn.

I considered that. If someone else made a general one, I'd offer to help however was needed with the Thai section. But for MDL general tends to mean anything except Thai and I'm not going to do so well with participating in conversations for other countries' supernatural films.

We decide. It has supernatural in the tags and that's an easy criteria to plan ahead for. So to start with, anything with that tag counts. If we want to narrow it down, we can. Or members can decide for themselves if it meets their own criteria. (Like I will get fussy about Thai regions and Thai traditional in the TDC challenge for myself but am relaxed about others' choices.)

Some of this can also be improving tags - they can be quite sparse for Thai 'horror'. And since Thai 'horror' often doesn't match up with expectations from other countries...

You mentioned in Feeds that you're not keen on challenges, but would you advise on these for prompts in a thriller-horror section please.

Would you add anything or replace any of them with something else? Because it's a mini-challenge, I'm thinking 3 from the list but some might want to do all unless it gets long.

I'm putting together a mini-challenge - working towards approx 24 titles (2 per month)

And I had the idea last night of asking everyone to include three recommendations. A prompt will be Watch a recommended title. It seems a simple but hopefully effective way of encouraging both sharing and conversation.

So please start thinking of yours. (And if anyone happening by doesn't have any, that's fine. You can add some during the year.)

Yeah, I'm not very keen on challenges, but I might try if it's horror related. 😁

Those tags are good. Most horror-thrillers have those tags. Just a suggestion, maybe you can add -
- supernatural beings (ghosts, spirits, or any creature included). What would a supernatural/horror film be without the supernatural beings, right?
- violence (this might include graphic violence).
