My all-time favourite Chinese movies (so far)
My all-time favourite Chinese movies, in no specific order, because I simply can’t choose between most of them to make a ranking.
-
1. Hero
Chinese Movie - 2002
A poem in the form of cinema. One of the most terrific movies ever made in my eyes.
-
2. Resurrection
Chinese Movie - 2025
Art in the form of cinema, and a poem to cinema. To watch, to lose track of time, to reflect, to discover, and mostly, to feel. You need a bit of knowledge of 20th-century Chinese history, cinema, and Buddhism to catch more meanings.
-
3. Infernal Affairs
Hong Kong Movie - 2002
My first time watching Tony Leung, and the story impacted me forever. My heart was broken, and I couldn’t stand the Hollywood remake; my sensitivity vibes much better with the original.
-
4. Farewell My Concubine
Chinese Movie - 1993
A timeless classic, visually stunning, with a complex history intertwined with individual lives against the backdrop of China’s history during the first 70 years of the 20th century. Also, a statement on the importance of art. A fantastic study of identity, memory, and love, with an incredible Leslie Cheung.

5. To Live
Chinese Movie - 1994
Incredible movie about the Maoist era; another one that really broke my heart but has lingered with me ever since. A must-see, but not for the faint of heart.
-
6. In the Mood for Love
Hong Kong Movie - 2000
What can I say? An ode to love, longing, and desire in the language of cinema. Wong Kar-wai and Christopher Doyle were unbeatable together and left an indelible mark on cinema history.
