The movie has been sitting at a rating of 8.3 and was appreciated properly by those who went out of their way to watch this beautiful story in cinemas. By those who understand the importance of telling a story of a gay guy and his support system.
It's really telling that once this movie became available for streaming this week and bl fans who have been screaming that this movie "straight-washed" the book, finally watched it, the rating dropped significantly, even though it has been clearly stated that the focus of this movie adaptation is the first chapter with the MC and his best friend.
It's disappointing, but not surprising that it took a steamy kiss scene that went viral on twitter for many bl fans to actually give this amazing piece of queer media a chance. You guys don't prioritize the queer experience in the bls you watch. A piece of queer media is only worthy to you guys if there is something in it you can fujoshi out about.
And you are free to have that mindset, if you want to. It is your choice, at the end of the day. But rating this movie very low, because it didn't meet the imaginary fujoshi standards you have in your mind, is such a sad thing to do.

Just finished watching episode 7 and I just stared at my screen in awe. I'm so pleasantly amazed by this jdrama. It's so good that I've completely lost interest in any other series I'm watching.
His portrayal of Tsuno Kun stole the entirety of Umi no Hajimari for me. There was a depressing subtlety in how he played that character.
Half the time I watched him on screen, the barrier of his character being fictional broke subconsciously in my mind. He brought so much life and humanity to that character, in a way that I hardly see actors do.
I cried a lot in scenes with Tsuno in it, even though I began the show being dismissive of his character.
And of course I'm already seeing stupid discourse on twitter about the movie. The audience should read the book and the specific part that is being adapted in the movie, before they talk.
Talking about the movie being straight washed and queer erasure, as if the people posting those less than intelligent tweets on twitter, and claim to have read the novel lack reading and comprehension abilities.
Just wait for the movie to come out, if you want to see a guy gay have a beautiful support system, this movie is for you. If you just want to watch two men be in love with little to no substance of their characterization, struggles, experiences and family life, there are so many actual bls out there, for you to watch.
