I think it's important not to be one-sided when looking at their back story. Both the ML and FL suffered greatly, just in different ways. Their experiences, losses, and struggles may not be identical, but that doesn't make one person's pain more valid than the other's. Rather than comparing who had it worse, I think the story shows how both characters endured hardships and grew because of them.
