WeTV/Tencent really need to get their shit together regarding their viewer base external to China.

If they're gonna continue with this half-arsed service for non-China based viewers, then they should also be charging a half-arsed rate. Fair is fair.

It's not a dramatic examination of the soul which will have you navel-gazing the meaning of life.

It is purely wuxia candy - filled with special people and their supernatural abilities. But it is presented very well, and the finale is tied off very well, in a manner that could leave season 1 by itself as a standalone, or lead in to a season 2. Either way works.

Oh ... and douban sucks.

If this series doesn't deserve a season 2, I don't know what does.

He gives her away to the emperor. He's the spymaster, so he knows the emperor isn't really concerned that much about issues of consent when it comes to sex. From the clips he seems to be well aware that Haishi is likely fighting the emperor to protect herself.

...yet he just sits there!?

If this is what actually goes down, no matter how much I'm enjoying watching the drama, then when it gets to that point, I think I'm going to put this one in the 'dropped' box.

If this is what goes down, I can't believe they actually marketed this as a love story.

It's one thing for the emperor to be a disgusting character. It's another thing for the man who supposedly loves her to assist in it.

They had to cut the end of the episode there though, didn't they.

I'm believing she survives. I'm guessing that Zhouying truly has to be moping around devasted, otherwise watchers might guess she escaped with him and she would be, as FJM puts it, the thing that holds Zhouying back at key moments.

If she's actually dead, then there's no hope for FJM at all. He goes in the villain basket.

Still pretty cold hearted of him even if she does survive.

Ok, just to be clear, when they're talking about Zhouying being shaved just of hair, not shaved like a eunuch ... right? Coz if it was like a eunuch I'm sure their conversation would probably be a little heavier in tone.

Also, based on the previews (yes, lol, I know, the previews ... /eyeroll) in one clip the subs say he's promising never to push her away again ... then in a later preview he's pushing her away by revealing her to the emperor?

Added to that the book extract Peaches gave us, in a way shows he considers Haishi as a tool. A beloved tool, but still a tool.

When I started this drama I was totally on board the FJM & FH love train. Totally into the shifu lover thing. But now I'm totally a Youdu worshipper (as you could probably already tell).

I don't think FJM loves Haishi enough to be worthy of her devotion.

It's like, you can love the stars, but that's not enough to make you an astronaut.

FJM is not Haishi's love astronaut.

Since there isn't any other available female character in this series (that I have any particular affection for) ... I've decided that Shaozi is actually a female in disguise (this sort of thing is catching). One day Shaozi rescues Youdu's merchant caravan and saves Youdu's life, Youdu falls for him, *ahem* I mean her (Shaozi that is), pursues h...er relentlessly and with total devotion and care, and they live happily ever after.

It's either that or I'm gonna have to go crossing drama-verses and ship Youdu with Dong Shanhu from Rebirth For You, because Jin Xiao was a putz.
